Chromosome numbers of vascular plants of Mt. Baekdu and adjacent area in China (백두산 및 인근지역 관속식물의 염색체 수)

  • During the course of the field trip to Mt. Baekdu and Manchurian region especially along the border of North Korea, young flower buds were collected and fixed to analyze the meiotic configuration of chromosomes and to discuss the cytotaxonomic characteristics of these areas. A total of 29 taxa with 31 populations of vascular plants were analyzed chromosomally. Among them, 26 taxa with 28 populations were collected from Mt. Baekdu which include Papaver radicata var. pseudoradicata, Bupleurum euphorbioides, Oplopanax elatus, Silene jenisseensis, and Gentiana jamesii and three taxa collected from Manchurian region which include Scrophularia buergeriana, Ostericum grosseserratum and Callistephus chinensis. The first report of chromosome numbers were provided here for those species of Artemisia lagocephala as 2n = 9II, Cacalia komaroviana as 2n = 30II, Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. alpinum as 2n = 27II and Rodiola rosea as 2n = 11II,

A Cytotaxonamical study of Rubus (Rosaceae) in Korea (한국산 산딸기속(Rubus)의 세포분류학적 연구)

  • Somatic chromosome numbers of 19 taxa of Korean Rubus was investigated. Subg. Anoplobatus (2 species), subg. Cylactis (1 species), subg. Idaeobatus (15 taxa) and subg. Malachobatus (1 species) are found in Korea. All taxa belonging to subg. Idaeobatus except for R. parvifolius which shows tetrapolid and hexaploid are diploid. The basic chromosome number of the genus was x=7. New chromosome numbers for 5 taxa were reported here: R. hongnoensis of Jeju-island endemic species, 2n=14; R. longisepalus, 2n=14; R. longisepalus var. tozawai, 2n=14; R. parvifolius, 2n=28; R. parvifolius var. taquetii, 2n=28. The rest 12 taxa except for R. coreanus Miq was well counted as 2n=14 and well consistent with previous reports from China and Japan. Our new chromosome level for R. parvifolius as 6x may indicate that speciation by polyploidization has occurred within Korean population. Unlikely to Japanese population (2n=42), Korean population of R. buergeri has same ploidy level with Taiwanese population as 2n=56.

Chromosomal Studies on the Genus Trichoderma (Trichoderma속의 염색체(染色體)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • The life cycle of 17 species of Trichoderma was elucidated to seize the proper stage for observing the nuclear behavior and chromosome count. The most convenient stage for the purpose in their life cycle was the stage just before producing the asexual spore. Of the 17 species in the genus Trichoderma the haploid chromosome numbers were counted 5,6,7 and 10. Six chromosomes were most frequently observed. It is believed that the basic chromosome number is placed between 4 and 10, and that the number might be 6, referring to the related papers. It appears necessary to reclassify the single genus of Trichoderma into at least two or three genera.

Cytogenetic Analysis of Reciprocal Hybrids Reveals a Robertsonian Translocation between Mud Loach ($Misgurnus$ $mizolepis$) and Cyprinid Loach ($M.$ $anguillicaudatus$) (미꾸라지($Misgurnus$ $mizolepis$)와 미꾸리($M.$ $anguillicaudatus$) 및 유도된 종간 잡종의 세포유전학적 연구)

  • Reciprocal hybrids between the mud loach ($Misgurnus$ $mizolepis$) and cyprinid loach ($M.$ $anguillicaudatus$) were produced by artificial fertilization. The chromosome number of mud loach was 2n=48, consisting of 12M+4SM+32A chromosomes. The cyprinid loach has 2n=50, consisting of 10M+4SM+36A chromosomes. The chromosome numbers of the diploid reciprocal hybrids were 2n=49, consisting of 11M+4SM+34A chromosomes. All the karyotypes documented in this study had the same arm number of 64. There was no evidence of chromosomal polymorphisms or sex-related heteromorphism. The cytogenetic traits of the hybrid genotypes were intermediate between those of the parent species. In all genotypes, the chromosomal NORs localized to the terminal short arms of the same metacentric chromosome pair. These results suggest that Robertsonian translocation occurred between metacentric chromosome 1 of mud loach and acrocentric chromosome of cyprinid loach.

  • Iris L. is a perennial genus comprising approximately 300 species worldwide, with the greatest number of endemic species occurring in Asia. Iris is one of the largest genera in the family Iridaceae and includes ca. 15 species native to Korea. Although chromosome number change, karyotype restructuring, and genome size variation play an important role in plant genome diversification, understanding the karyotype variation in Korean Iris species has been hampered by the wide range of base chromosome number (x = 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22) reported to date. This study documents the chromosome numbers, karyotype structure and genome size variation in Iris ruthenica K. Gawl., an endangered species in Korea obtained using classic Feulgen staining and flow cytometry. The chromosome number of all investigated plants from the nine populations was 2n = 42. All individuals studied possessed metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. The genome size of the I. ruthenica in eight wild populations ranged from 2.39 pg/1C to 2.45 pg/1C ($2.42{\pm}0.02pg/1C$: $mean{\pm}SD$). This study provides the first report of genome size variation in Iris ruthenica in Korea. This study lays foundation for cytogenetic further analyses employing by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to better understand the chromosomal evolution in this species and in the whole genus.

Chromosome study of Galium elegans and G. asperifolium (Rubiaceae) from Yunnan, China (중국 Yunnan 지역 갈퀴덩굴속 식물에 대한 염색체 연구)

  • The somatic chromosome of two taxa, Galium elegans Wall. ex Roxb(Sect. Cymogaliea Pobed) and Galium asperifolium Wall. ex Roxb(Sect. Leptogalium Lang), in Yunnan, China were investigated. The taxa were reported for the first time. The somatic chromosome numbers of G. elegans was 2n = 22(X = 11), diploid, from two regions, Mt. Canghsan and Hutiaoxia Valley. Those of G. asperifolium were found as 2n = 33, 44, 55(X = 11) with triploid, tetraploid, pentaploid. Most of G. elegans in the Yunnan were confirmed as diploid. The somatic chromosome number of G. asperifolium was found polyploidy, and the investigation revealed that triploid and tetraploid are living together as mixed population in the Mt. Canghsan.

  • In the parallel processing systems, a compiler partitions a loaded program into tasks, allocates the tasks on multiple processors and schedules the tasks on each allocated processor. In this paper we suggest a Genetic Algorithm(GA) based scheduling method to find an optimal allocation and sequence of tasks on each Processor. The suggested method uses a chromosome which consists of task sequence and binary string that represent the number and order of tasks on each processor respectively. Two correction algorithms are used to maintain precedency constraints of the tasks in the chromosome. This scheduling method determines the optimal number of processors within limited numbers, and then finds the optimal schedule for each processor. A result from computational experiment of the suggested method is given.

  • The chromosome numbers and the karyotypes of seven species in Unionidae are reported, using air drying in gonad. In seven species, the chromosome number of 38(2n) was counted. The mitotic chormosomes of A. arcaeformis flavotincta, A. woodiana and L. gottschei hd 7 pairs of metacentric and 12 pairs of submetacenrtic chromosomes, U. douglasiae had 6 pairs of metacentrics, 13 pairs of submetacentrics, U. douglasiae sinuolatus had 4 metacentric pairs and 15 submetacentric pairs, L. acrorhyncha had 5 metacentric pairs and 14 submetaacentric pairs, and S. triangularis had 5 mdtacenrtric pairs, 13 submetacentric pairs and 1 pair of subtelocentric chromosomes. The size of chromosomes of A. woodiana was the longest in length and L. gottschei was the shortest. The sexual difference of chromosomes was not observed.

In vitro Tissue Culture of Aloe arborescens Mill

  • Aloe in vitro culture was attempted to induce callus and regeneration ability from different explant sources onto MS medium with 0.5mg/l NAA plus 1.0mg/l BA. Anthers that no developed any callus and plant regeneration, while only four out of 274 filament explants induced calli at cut edge without regenerated plants. Twenty ovary explants regenerated four direct plantlets without via callus from the base of epidermal tissues. Regenerated plants on the root tip gave 2n=14 of chromosome numbers.

  • A comparative study on Angelica and Cnidium, the two genera of Umbelliferae growing in Korea, was carried about the cytology and fertility of pollen. The somatic chromosome number of Umbelliferae was found almost to be 2N=22. Both species of Kang-whal and Chun-gung were found to be in polyploid with different chromosome numbers each other. The pollen fertility among the species of Angelica was high, but Toh-chun-gung was zero percent. The species of Angelica have been generated with pollen fertility, but species of Cnidium with only root or rootlet.
