The value of a statistical life (VSL) plays a very important role in estimating the benefits of environmental policy. It is used, for example, as a unit of monetization of health benefits resulting from the reduction of air pollutants, which is the basis of cost-benefit analysis of policies. The VSL can be defined as the value that people of each society are willing to pay to reduce the risk of death, so the value should reflect the characteristics of its members. In this study, we apply a choice experiment with 3,081 respondents collected through a web survey were divided into two samples according to the type of questions. Among the various estimates, the most appropriate estimate of the VSL is about 1.3 billion won from 1,528 sample, which is similar to the results of the meta-analysis using estimates from prior studies conducted in Korea. In addition, this study shows that a private prevention program is preferred to reduce the risk of death from cancer rather than a public program.

The coast of Incheon reaches Incheon itself, Gimpo, Siheung, and Ansan of Gyunggi-do. Because this area has been seriously polluted, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has established the Incheon Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) to preserve sea water quality as a marine environment asset. However, there is concern that actions taken in this area may change the surrounding marine ecology, being effected by farms, via a river that flows from waste lands, abandoned fishing activities and fishing nets, etc. Given this background, this study estimates the value of SAMP sea water quality using a choice experiment (CE). A CE survey of 1,000 households was undertaken, investigating trade-offs involving price and four attributes for selecting a preferred alternative to obtain a marginal willingness to pay (MWTP) estimate for each attribute. The estimation results showed that MWTP for a 1 %p improvement in sea water quality, the diversity of fauna species, the diversity of flora species, and a 1 %p reduction in marine litter as a result of conserving Incheon coastal sea water quality are estimated to be KRW 75, 135, 309 and 72 per household per year, respectively. All estimation results were statistically significant at the 1 % level. These findings can provide policy makers with useful information for evaluating and planning marine environmental management policies.
Purpose - This study empirically analyzes the consumer value of risk management associated with illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing of fishery products imported to Korea. The global regulatory paradigm for IUU fishing has shifted from production-centered to market-centered. As a result, changes in the international fisheries trade environment emphasizing "transparency" and "legality" of the production process are accelerating. Therefore, changes in the management systems of fishery products entering the country are also needed. Accordingly, this study estimated the consumer value for risk management of IUU fishing, targeting major fish species imported to Korea, and derived the feasibility of introducing related policies. Design/methodology - This study used the choice experiment as an analysis model to estimate consumers' willingness to pay for the "possibility to check for IUU fishing." The choice experiment assumes that the value of a good or service is composed of separable attributes and that the sum of the part-worth of these individual attributes becomes the total value. In this study, respondents were presented with profiles comprising three attributes (country of origin, price, and possibility of checking IUU fishing) and the levels of frozen poulp squid, the subject of the analysis. The participants were asked to select their preferred profile. The marginal willingness to pay for each attribute was derived from the results of the respondents' choices using conditional logit model estimates. Findings - There is a marked difference in utility based on the preference of the country of origin of fishery products among consumers. In addition, the utility of fishery products that have undergone IUU fishing verification was observed to be higher, with the utility marked to be higher for lower prices. Originality/value - Estimating the policy value of the risk management in IUU fishing of imported fisheries products in this study is a novel attempt that has never been conducted before. Several studies have been conducted to assess the risk of IUU fishing associated with the import of fishery products internationally. However, such studies are yet to be conducted in Korea. Instead, policies and studies have focused on issues related to complying with trading partners' legal and transparent standards for exporting fishery products. This study should be the beginning of more in-depth empirical and theoretical explorations to establish order in the domestic seafood market and respond to changes in international regulations on IUU fishing.
An experiment was carried out with village chicken at the laying stage raised on the semi-intensive system on three feeding treatments with each of 30 birds replicated three times. The three feeding treatments were: layer mash only, layer mash and corn as choices and choices of a high protein concentrate and corn. Feed and protein intake was significantly higher for birds on the layer mash and lower for birds on the choices of a high protein and corn diet. There was no differences in egg production for the birds fed the layer mash either alone or a choice with corn but lower for the birds on the choices of a high protein feed and corn. There was no differences in egg weight and gross efficiency for all treatments. The practice of choice feeding layer mash and corn could be adopted by farmers rearing village chicken under the semi-intensive system due to the lower cost.
The experiment was conducted to study the effect of choice feeding on growth performance, carcass quality, gastrointestinal development and feed utilization of 22-49 days old broilers. One hundred and forty four 22-day-old broilers were randomly allocated to 3 treatments with 4 replicates per treatment and 12 birds per replicate. Three feeding regimes are complete diet (control), ground corn and protein concentrate (treatment I), and soybean meal and balancer (treatment II). Protein concentrate is the residue part of complete diet without corn, and balancer is the residue part of complete diet without soybean meal. Treatment I and II are designed for the broilers to freely choose the two parts of diet. The results showed that: (1) broilers under choice feeding (treatment I and II) had lower performances compared with the control; (2) gastrointestinal development and the efficiency ratios that broilers converted dietary crude protein and lysine to body weight gain were improved in treatment I (p<0.05); (3) there were no significant differences in the apparent metabolizabilities of dietary dry matter, crude protein and gross energy, and deposition ratios of dietary nitrogen and energy, and carcass quality among three feeding regimes (p>0.05).
This study introduces the mother logit model to predict consumer's store choices. The model is not based on the IIA assumptions and thus accounts for substitution among similar alternatives. The choice data as an input to the model is obtained through the conjoint-type choice experiment. The model is applied to consumer's choice of fastfood stores in the context where new store enters the market. The analysis shows that the substitution effects are significant and therefore the mother logit model predicts better than the IIA model. The mother logit model will be useful as well for the market structure analysis in capturing cannibalization among several brands.
Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the influence of different methods of distributing sweepstakes (i.e., whether consumers choose to enter into the sweepstakes themselves or they are given the sweepstake ticket by default) on the effectiveness of the sweepstakes promotion (i.e., interest in the sweepstakes and intention to participate in the sweepstakes). Research design, data and methodology: The paper verifies this effect through three experimental studies: an online experiment using a sweepstakes promotion scenario at a department store, an online SNS sweepstakes promotion event, and a face-to-face card lottery game. Results: Participants belonging the group that chose sweepstakes tickets by themselves showed higher interest and intention to participate in the sweepstakes than those who were given the sweepstakes ticket by default. Furthermore, the group that chose the sweepstakes card thought it had a higher probability of winning than the group given the sweepstakes card. Conclusions: This paper shows a way to enhance the promotional effect of sweepstakes in the retail stores, without incurring additional costs, by approaching from sweepstakes design from the psychological perspective of the consumer. The study also sheds new light on the effect of sense of control manipulation using choice behavior in the promotional context.
This study examined whether there was a difference in the attitude toward the recommended product and the effect on the choice deferral according to information sources. Experiment 1 examined the relationship between trust in information and product attitude, and between uncertainty and choice deferral according to information sources (AI chatbot vs. human). Experiment 2 examined the impact of social presence, perceived personalization, and choice deferral according to whether anthropomorphism of AI chatbots or not. The research results are as follows. First, consumers were found to have a more positive attitude toward products recommended by AI chatbots (vs. human). Second, consumers were more choice deferral whether to purchase products recommended by AI chatbots (vs. human). Third, it was found that consumers' selection of products recommended by anthropomorphic AI chatbots (vs. impersonated AI chatbots) increased. Also, the implications of this study and future research directions were discussed.
This study investigated the influence of the application of the career education programs related to the science of the elementary school on the career choice. For this study, a total of 32 lessons (4 units) utilizing the career education programs related the science curriculum were developed. The study subjects were 128 students from Y elementary school located in Incheon. A test with regard to the science related career choice and the science related career choice factors was performed before and after the lessons. For more detailed analysis, the experimental group was divided into two groups of female and male students; students who hope and do not hope career in science-related fields. As a result of the performance of career education programs, it showed a significant improvement in the 'science related career choice'. And, it also showed all significant improvements in 'science related major/department, education lecture selection'. It was possible to know that the students who do not wish science related jobs in the future also changed their mind on to the science. In addition, all the subcategories of the 'preference for science learning' area such as 'preference for science subject', 'preference for experiment', 'recognition of science subject availability', 'recognition of the impact of teacher' showed a significant improvement. The 'perception about career related to science' showed a significant improvement on the whole. There was no significant improvement on the whole in 'participation in science related activities'.
Ziperol, anti-tussive, is considerably bitter. Therefore, it is necessary to mitigate the bitterness in ziperol syrup for children. In this experiment, it was attempted to mitigate the bitterness of zipeprol by means of polymers such as $\beta$-cyclodextrin, arabic gum, HPMC(hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), PEG 2000(polyethyleneglycol 2000), PVP(polyvinylpyrrolidone). Caffeine was used as the reference standard of bitterness. In the result of this experiment, $\beta$-cyclodextrin, would mitigate the bitterness of zipeprol more largely than any other polymers. Arabic gum was the second choice which would mitigate the bitterness of zipeprol.
