  • Purpose - In recent, a research finds that advanced selling can influence a consumer's choice(Kim et al., 2013). Advanced selling is defined as the new product launching strategy which company allows consumers to preorder new product before its release(Chu & Zhang, 2011). Prior researches have focused on the benefits of advanced selling(e.g., information gathering for demand prediction, an advantage for pricing strategy, and so on) for companies using this strategy(Chen, 2001; Chu & Zhang, 2011; Li & Zhang, 2013; Tang et al., 2004; Xie & Shugan, 2009). However, Kim et al.(2013) find it can also influence a consumer's choice. In detail, they suggest that when consumers use advanced selling, they are likely to prefer high-performance options rather than low-price options based on construal level theory(Trope & Liberman, 2003). In this paper, we tried to expand the prior researches for finding the mechanism of the influence of advanced selling on a consumer's choice. The purpose of this research is to test the mediating effect on the influence of advanced selling. Research design, data, and methodology - To find the mechanism of the influence of advanced selling, we designed an experiment for testing mediation effect. we recruited 93 students from a university. We assigned participants into one of two groups using randomization method. The participants with each group were given a scenario describing the sales strategy. Finally, they made a choice between high-performance option and low-price option. Sequentially, they also responded some questions for testing mediation effect. Results - First, we replicated prior research to test the influence of advanced selling. As a result, we could find that consumers prefer the high-performance option when they preorder it to purchase at the time of consumption. Thus, the replication result is the same as prior research. Second, we tested that advanced selling can influence the perception of temporal distance. The results confirmed that consumers perceived longer temporal distance in advanced selling condition(β = 1.575, SE = 0.272, p < 0.001). Third, we predicted that temporal distance can increase the importance of desirable attributes and decrease the importance of feasible attributes. The results suggested that temporal distance decreased significantly the importance of attributes related to feasibility(β = -0.19, SE = 0.07, p < 0.01), however, it had non-significant effect on increasing the importance of desirable attributes. Finally, we used Sobel-test for testing mediation effect, and it confirmed that the importance of feasible attributes had mediating role of the influence of advanced selling(Sobel test statistic = -2.110, SE = 0.111, p < 0.05). Conclusions - In this paper, we tried to find the mechanism of the influence on advanced selling from a consumer's choice. With an experiment, we confirmed that the importance of feasible attributes could mediate the effect on advanced selling. Therefore, we suggested some theoretical and practical contributions from this research. Finally, we discussed research limitations and suggested future research topics.

  • This study examined the effect of face sensitivities on a consumer's choice of luxury product's logo size. To answer the research question, an experimental design was planed and conducted where the stimulus for the experiment comprised two luxury brands, Louisvuitton and Couronne. For each brand, three different sizes of a logo were considered; no logo, logo with small size, and logo with big size. Each product has an identical design, color, and size except for the size of logos. A total of 115 students were enrolled in the experiment to select one of the logo sizes in each brand. Through the data analysis, we found that shame consciousness and consciousness for others among face sensitivities were significantly associated with the choice of a logo size both in Louisvuitton and Couronne. In addition, there was no significant difference in face sensitivities between male and female, but was significant difference in the choice of a logo size between male and female.

  • The purpose of this study is to elicit preference for drug listing decision criteria and to estimate the ICER threshold in South Korea using the discrete choice experiment (DCE) method. To collect the data, a DCE survey was administered to a subject sample either educated in the principle concepts of pharmacoeconomics or were decision makers within that field. Subjects chose between alternative drug profiles differing in four attributes: ICER, uncertainty, budget impact and severity of disease. The orthogonal and balanced designs were determined through computer algorithm to take the optimal set of drug profiles. The survey employed 15 hypothetical choice sets. A random effect probit model was used to analyze the relative importance of attributes and the probabilities of a recommendation response. Parameter estimates from the models indicated that three attributes (ICER, Impact, Severity of disease) influenced respondents' choice significantly(p${\pm}$0.001). In addition, each parameter displayed an expected sign. The Lower the ICER, the higher the probability of choosing that alternative. Respondents also preferred low levels of uncertainty and smaller impact on health service budget. They were also more likely to choose drugs for serious diseases rather than mild or moderate ones. Uncertainty however is not statistically significant. The ICER threshold, at which the probability of a recommendation was 0.5, was 29,000,000 KW/QALY in expert group and 46,500,000 KW/QALY in industry group. We also found that those in our sample were willing to accept high ICER to get medication for severe diseases. This study demonstrates that the cost-effectiveness, budget impact and severity of disease are the main reimbursement decision criteria in South Korea, and that DCE can be a useful tool in analyzing the decision making process where a variety of factors are considered and prioritized.

  • This study conducts a choice experiment to estimate the recreational values of major dam reservoirs in Korea. A discrete-choice econometric model is estimated with the data of experimented choices. Not only the recreation value of each dam lake but also the values of the characteristics of the lakes are estimated. It is shown that the value function of the amount of reserved water is not monotonically increasing. Water quality is the most important characteristic that affects the recreation value. Various other characteristics of the dams such as the availability of education facility, restaurants, hotels and parking lots also generate substantial amounts of recreational benefits.

  • In recent years, a growing concern exists in watershed and stream improvement projects. Under these circumstances, this paper estimates monetary value of the attributes of alternatives for rehabilitation of hydrologic cycle using choice experiments. Choice experiments shows vivid image and estimates a willingness to pay based on their preference for environmental goods. A preliminary survey shows that the attributes of the Anyangcheon watershed are flood-damage possibilities, Instreamflow, water quality, river characteristic and estimates the tax for the Anyangcheon watershed improvements. We surveyed 200 citizens were selected as samples of watershed beneficing in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province and used conditional logit model to analyze the implicit values of the attributive per household. The benefit of the attributes by province based on the implicit price obtained from estimated parameters were calculated. This study is expected to contribute to the decision-making process for policy-makers by providing useful methodological framework and quantitative information related to watershed improvement projects.

  • This article estimates the economic values of changes in water quality of the Paldang Watershed by using the Choice Experiment (CE). The conditional logit model estimation results show that a small improvement in water quality from the 'status quo' level to the level of 'very good' increases average household's monthly utility by 3,157 Won, whereas a water quality degradation down to the 'normal' level gives rise to an increase in the monthly average utility by 9,649 Won. The corresponding social gain and loss of water quality changes to the Metropolitan Area were thus estimated about 285 billion Won and 872 billion Won, respectively. This article seems meaningful in that it resorts to the new water ecosystem classification criteria and indices that are respondent-friendly. They help a CE study like this to overcome one of its critical weakness that the number and contents of attributes of a CE study can quickly add to the information overload problem, especially where the environmental good under investigation is hard for ordinary respondents to understand.

  • This research was launched as an attempt to help create a new value-added product called "Green Jujube Chip." To accomplish the objectives, consumers value by attributes of Green Jujube Chip should be estimated. We used Choice Experiment for analysis, which we used to arrive at pricing of specialty jujube chips based on the conditional logit model. As a result, MWTP were estimated at 1333 Won/unit for Mid-size Company Product, 1752 Won/unit for Large Company Product, 1703 Won/unit for University Affiliation, 350 Won/unit for packing unit, 548 Won/unit for rating the raw fruit, 1,322 Won/unit for HACCP, and 1,166 Won/unit for ISO22000. The consumer's WTP for Green Juju Chip, associated with the university-brand recognition, was higher than a product produced by a mid-sized company but lower than a product by a large company. Given how the consumers regard the university-brand product as a specialty item, it is necessary to create value-added products that meet such high expectation. Therefore, we recommend the producers to acquire HACCP Food Safety Certification and the value-added product has used the highest quality raw fruit.

  • The objective of this study is to offer a basic data for the establishment of marketing strategies such as fixing price of a new product and creation of the development direction of the product through estimating consumers value by attributes of the newly developed university made multi cream. The Choice Experiment was used for analysis, and conditional logit model was estimated to derive the marginal willingness to pay(MWTP) of each attributes of the multi cream. Brand, container type, functionality, price were included as the attributes. As a result, MWTP were estimated at 21,754 Won/unit for large company product, 11,033 Won/unit for small company product and 16,178 Won/unit for university product, 7,476 Won/unit for enriched moisturizing, 12,107 Won/unit for enriched improvements in wrinkles. Consumers have a preference for university brand over small company brand, therefore, if university and small company cooperate and proceed a joint-venture, it will strengthen the competitive power in the low price brand market. Also, it is essential to develop products with enriched functionalities such as moisturizing and improvements in wrinkles.

  • The Korean government is considering the implementation of a project to develop a deep-sea human-operated vehicle (HOV) to improve the level of deep-sea research. Information on the scientific benefits from the project is urgently needed in order to come to a decision about whether to implement the project. This paper measures the conservation value of developing nine attributes associated with HOV by using the choice experiment (CE). A survey of about 356 experts was undertaken and 132 experts completely responded to the survey. To deal with the CE data from the survey, we employed a multinomial logit model. All the coefficient estimates are statistically significant and consistent with prior expectations. Therefore, we can judge that the respondents' works required in the CE survey were within their cognitive abilities and they reported responsible and significant values. Each marginal willingness to pay for each attribute associated with the HOV is statistically significant and provides good information on the scientific values with regard to developing the HOV. The results can be utilized in evaluating and planning several alternatives related to developing the HOV.
