Objectives: Phytic acid (IP6), a naturally occurring agent, has been previously reported as a potential alternative to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). However, its effect on adhesion to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)-treated dentin and its interactions with NaOCl have not been previously reported. Thus, in this study, the effects of IP6 on resin adhesion to NaOCl-treated dentin and the failure mode were investigated and the interactions between the used agents were analyzed. Materials and Methods: Micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) testing was performed until failure on dentin treated with either distilled water (control), 5% NaOCl, or 5% NaOCl followed with chelators: 17% EDTA for 1 minute or 1% IP6 for 30 seconds or 1 minute. The failed specimens were assessed under a scanning electron microscope. The reaction of NaOCl with EDTA or IP6 was analyzed in terms of temperature, pH, effervescence, and chlorine odor, and the effects of the resulting mixtures on the color of a stained paper were recorded. Results: The µTBS values of the control and NaOCl with chelator groups were not significantly different, but were all significantly higher than that of the group treated with NaOCl only. In the failure analysis, a distinctive feature was the presence of resin tags in samples conditioned with IP6 after treatment with NaOCl. The reaction of 1% IP6 with 5% NaOCl was less aggressive than the reaction of the latter with 17% EDTA. Conclusions: IP6 reversed the adverse effects of NaOCl on resin-dentin adhesion without the chlorine-depleting effect of EDTA.
Chlorination has been the most common antifouling method, but alternatives are under searching. In this article, we report how the hydrogen peroxide could enhance the effect of chlorination to prevent fouling by inhibiting larvae settlement and abatement of mussel colonization or by extinct of them; through marine mussel Mytilus edulis. The addition of hydrogen peroxide shows synergic effect on the veliger larvae (up to 19 folds) and effectively reduces required time of mussel mortality by 8-22%. For resolution of micro- and macro-fouling caused by the marine mussel, as well as diminishing of time and conventional chlorine dose could be important factor in favour of environment and economics.
In this studies, the ability of chlorine and lactic acid to reduce bacterial population of the pathogenic microorganisms were examined on artificially inoculated chicken skin. About 10$^{5}$ cells of staphylococcus aureus, salmonella enteritidis, listeria monocytogenes and escherichia coli O157:H7 were inoculated in chicken skin. The contaminated samples were washed for 1 min with sodium hypochlorite solutions that contained 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50mg/$\ell$ available chlorine and counted number of the agents. Viable population were no significantly difference (p$\geq$0.05) between concentration of chlorine and strains of the pathogens. In the samples inoculated with pathogens were washed in 20mg/$\ell$ chlorine and then stored at $^5{\circ}C$ for up to 10 days, the initial counts of psychrotrophs and aerobic plate counts were 4.02 to 4.36 log cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and increased slightly in course of time. But 10 days after, the pathogens were a little reduced from 3.66~4.91 log cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 2.54~4.66 log cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$. In the case of washed skin with solution of 20mg/$\ell$ chlorine and 0.5% lactic acid then store at $^5{\circ}C$ for up to 10 days, population of psychrotrophs and aerobic plate counts on chicken skin were markedly reduced immediately after treatment, but the numbers of contaminants were slightly increased after 6 and 8 days. Specifically, numbers of St aureus, S enteritidis, L monocytogenes and E coli O157:H7 were reduced to 0.5, 0.4, 0.3 and 1.15 log cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$ after 10 days of storage, respectively, on aerobic plate counts.

Toxicity of ten commercial disinfectants(hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, povidon iodine, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, quaternary ammonium compounds(QAC), didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride(DDAC), ortho-dichlorobenzene, and copper sulfate) was measured by chinook salmon embryo-214 cell line and three fish species: flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, black rockfish Sebastes pachycephalus, and black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii. The $LC_{50}$ levels of 24 hours acute toxicity with the ten disinfectants were tested in three species of fish. Effectiveness of ten chemical disinfectants were varied by each chemical as well as by species. Hydrogen peroxide showed the higest activity at 201, 269, and 139 ppm in the flounder, the black rockfish, and black sea bream, respectively. DDAC showed the lowest activity at 2.1, 1.0, and 1.5 ppm in the flounder, the black rockfish, and black sea bream, respectively. The highest variation was observed in copper sulfate by both the chemicals and the species.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of xylanase pretreatment of the unbleached hardwood kraft pulp during the conventional Chlorine-Extraction- Hypochlorite (CEH) bleaching on pulp property. Optimum bleaching condition was evaluated by using Novozym produced from the fungus Humicola insolens. Also the effect of chelating agent prior to enzyme treatment was analyzed. The kappa number of enzymatic bleached pulp at the enzyme charge 10 IU/ml was slightly similar to that of bleached pulp without enzyme. By enzyme treatment, the chlorine charge in conventional CEH bleaching process of hardwood KP could be reduced by 17%, while no adverse effect on pulp yield and strength was. The optimum condition for enzyme pretreatment was 10 IU/ml xylanase charge, 3 to 4 hrs treatment, and 2% pulp consistency. In sugar composition in the enzyme pretreated pulp, arabinose and mannose were not much different, but more xylose was retained. This high content of hemicellulose in pulp seems to play an important role in pulp properties. The pulp pretreatment by chelating agent prior to enzyme treatment could improve the enzyme activity and enhance the bleaching effect at 0.2% diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) charges.

Disinfection of ballast water using chlorine dioxide was investigated under various initial microorganism contents, dose concentrations and pH values. Kinetics of microorganism inactivation and byproduct generation of chlorine dioxide treatment were compared with the chlorine treatment. Results of treatments with chlorine dioxide concentrations of 0 to $10mg\;Cl_2/L$ showed that The optimum concentration of chlorine dioxide required for disinfection of ballast water was 1 mg/L. The difference among the second order reaction constants for bacterial disinfection at pH 7.2 to 9.2 for chlorine dioxide was less than 5% for both bacteria. This result implied that the bactericidal effects of chlorine dioxide was independent of the pH in the examined range. On the other hand, the inactivation kinetics of chlorine for E. coli and Enterococcus decreased by 17% and 25%, respectively, when pH increased from 7.2 to 9.2. The bactericidal power of chlorine dioxide was superior to sodium hypochlorite above pH 8.2, the average pH value of sea water. Furthermore, treatments of chlorine dioxide generated less harmful byproducts than chlorine and had a long-term disinfection effect on bacteria and phytoplankton from the results of experiment for 30 days. Chlorine dioxide would be a promising alternative disinfectant for ballast water.

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of NO oxidation using un-divided electrolyzed seawater as oxidant. The concentration of available chlorine and the temperature of electrolyzed seawater are increased with electrolysis time in the closed-loop constant current electrolysis system. While NO gas flow through bubbling reactor which is filled with electrolyzed seawater, the oxidation rate of NO to $NO_2$ is increased with the concentration of available chlorine and the temperature. $NO_2$, generated by oxidation reaction, is dissolved in electrolyzed seawater and existed as $HNO_3{^-}$ ion.

Many different types of bleaching chemicals and processes have been globally used for deinked pulp. Besides chlorine-free bleaching chemicals, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium dithionite that could be used without restriction for almost all types of fibers, chlorine-containing chemicals such as chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite have also used throughout the world. Even though hydrogen peroxide is commonly used in newsprint, it could not effectively increase brightness. Experimental evaluation on the possibility of using formamidine sulfinic acid (FAS), a reducing agent, for bleaching a wood-containing deinked pulp has been carried out in this study. The effect of bleaching efficiency for FAS on operational conditions and chemical concentrations compaired to hydrogen peroxide in one and two stages was studied. FAS bleaching showed higher brightness at high temperature and low consistency, and vice versa for peroxide one. Bleaching with sodium silicate and DTPA in FAS and peroxide stage showed better results than cases without them. Sodium silicate and chelant seemed minimize the influence of transition metal ions, including manganese and iron ions, which induce both bleaching agents to decompose. As a result, FAS as a reducing agent seems more effective than hydrogen peroxide for increasing brightness and reducing yellowness. FAS and FAS sequence seemed more efficient than the other two stages of bleaching sequences with regard to the best brightness level obtained. When bleaching was conducted with FAS, COD load was just about one-third compared to peroxide, and brightness stability of the bleached pulp appeared better than peroxide after UV light irradiation.
The surface of wiper blade(W/B) rubber was chlorinated by chemical treatment method using the hydrochloric acid(HCI) and sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl). From the results of contact angle measurement, friction coefficient measurement, and ATR-IR spectra, the surface characteristics of chlorinated W/B rubber with time of chlorination were studied. Contact angles for W/B rubber with increasing time of chlorination and chlorine concentration were measured for the water and ethylene glycol. From the results, contact angle fell rapidly with increasing time of chlorination and chlorine concentration, reaching a constant value after about 10min. And the wettability of W/B rubber surface by means of chlorination has been improved. For an unchlorinated W/B rubber, the friction coefficient with time of chlorination decreased from 1.27 to 0.20~0.23 on full chlorination. As the results it was considered that abrasion resistance of W/B rubber surface has been also improved. The values of pH and $Cl^-$ ion concentration in a chlorine treatment solution decreased as the extent of chlorination of W/B rubber surface increased. From the results of ATR-IR spectra, it was observed that C=C double band of W/B rubber surface transformed into C-Cl band, but quantitative determination of the extent of chlorination was not feasible because of the complexity of chlorination reactions.
