Effects of Processing Temperature and Browning Inhibitor on Quality Properties of Fresh-cut Burdock Roots (가공 온도 및 갈변 억제제가 신선절단 우엉의 품질 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Fresh-cut burdock roots were processed at 4 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The fresh-cut burdock roots were treated with different browning inhibitors (3% citric acid, 3% sodium chloride, 0.3% cystein, and 3% sodium acetate solutions), and the changes in their quality and browning characteristics were investigated. The respiration rate and browning index of the cut roots prepared at $4^{\circ}C$ were lower than those of the cut roots prepared at $25^{\circ}C$. The soluble solid content was higher in the cut roots prepared at $4^{\circ}C$ than in those prepared at $25^{\circ}C$. The weight loss and flesh firmness were not affected by the processing temperatures. Among the browning inhibitors, 0.3% cystein showed the best browning-retarding effect. There was no difference in phenolic compound content between the browning-inhibitor-treated roots and the nontreated roots, but the PPO activity was higher in the latter than in the former. Therefore, the processing temperatures of fresh-cut burdock roots affected their quality and browning development, and the combination of a low processing temperature and the use of the proper browning inhibitor should be applied for the higher quality of the produce.

Growth and Yield Response of Chinese Cabbage and Radish on Application of Potassium Chloride Fertilizer (염화칼리 시용에 따른 배추와 무의 생육과 수량)

  • The application of potassium above the optimum level may cause the inhibition of plant growth, fertilizer loss, and environmental pollution. Therefore, application rate of K fertilizer should be recommended on the basis of soil test. In order to determine critical K content in soils causing growth inhibition of vegetables, $1m^2-pot$ experiments with Chinese cabbage and radish were accomplished with various K-application rates. The threshold concentrations of exchangeable potassium causing the inhibition of plant growth were $0.96cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for Chinese cabbage in spring, and $1.28cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for radish in autumn. Above those concentration levels, the yields of them were decreased with the increase of potassium levels in soils. Germination rate of Chinese cabbage in spring decreased with increase of the electrical conductivity (EC) of soils due to application of potassium fertilizer. In the harvesting stage, the potassium contents of plant were increased with the increase of K application rate while plant uptake of nutrients was decreased at the K adjustment level of over $2.0cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$.

Pseudohypoaldosteronism in a premature neonate with severe polyhydramnios in utero (양수과다증 산전력이 있는 미숙아의 가성저알도스테론혈증 1예)

  • We report a case of a premature newborn baby who presented with hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, and metabolic acidosis accompanied by severe polyhydramnios in utero. The baby was diagnosed with pseudohypoaldosteronism on the basis of normal 17-hydroxyprogesterone levels, elevated aldosterone, and clinical symptoms. His serum electrolyte levels were corrected with sodium chloride supplementation. Sodium supplementation was reduced gradually and discontinued at 5 months of age. At 5 months, the child was able to maintain normal serum electrolyte levels without oral sodium chloride supplementation, and showed normal physical and neurological development. This case illustrates that pseudohypoaldosteronism must be considered if a newborn infant with an antenatal history of severe polyhydramnios shows excessive salt loss with normal levels of 17-hydroxyprogesterone.

Material Characteristic of POFA Concrete and Its Application to Corrosion Resistance Evaluation (POFA 콘크리트의 재료특성 및 부식 저항성 평가로의 적용)

  • In this study, corrosion resistance of palm oil fuel ash (POFA) concrete as a blended concrete is evaluated by using electrochemical technique. The POFA is an industrial byproduct obtained from fuel ash after extracting palm oil from palm-tree. In order to obtain basic material characteristics of the POFA concrete, tests on compressive strength, slump, weight loss, bleeding and expansion ratio were carried out the early-aged POFA concrete. On the other hand, durability characteristics, both chloride penetration and carbonation depth test, were also conducted. Finally, corrosion resistance were evaluated by applying electro-chemical artificial crack healing technique, and the tests on the impressed voltage characteristic, galvanic current and linear polarization resistance. From the experimental results, it was found that long-term strength, bleeding, lower slump ratio, expansion ratio, chloride penetration, carbonation and corrosion resistance were improved by using the POFA due to activated pozzolanic reaction. It can be also mentioned that POFA concrete has a potential to be used as a cementitious binder for green-recycling resources.

Antiviral Efficacy of Citra-kill®, Disinfectant Solution Against Avian Influenza Virus

  • Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) is already panzootic in poultry and caused a considerable economic loss in poultry industry. In addition, HPAIV continues to cross species barriers to infect humans and other mammals, often with fatal outcomes. In this study, the virucidal efficacy of Citra-$Kill^{(R)}$ composed to quaternary ammonium chloride and citric acid was investigated against avian influenza H9N2 virus (AIV). A virucidal efficacy was determined with the viability of AIV contacted with the disinfectant in the allantoic membrane of chicken embryos. Citra-$Kill^{(R)}$ and AIV was reacted on the distilled water (DW), hard water (HW) or organic matter suspension (OM) condition. On DW condition, AIV was inactivated with 2,000 fold dilutions of Citra-$Kill^{(R)}$. When the antiviral effect on HW condition was evaluated, the antiviral activity of the disinfectant showed on 1,500 fold dilutions against AIV. With the investigation of the antiviral effect of the disinfectant on OM condition, AIV was inactivated on 500 fold dilutions of Citra-$Kill^{(R)}$. As Citra-$Kill^{(R)}$ possesses virucidal efficacy against AIV, the disinfectant solution can be used to limit the spread of animal viral diseases.

Viability Change of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis in the Sputum Specimens Stored at Different Temperatures with or without Preservatives (객담보관온도별 결핵균의 생활력 변화와 오염방지를 위한 방부제에 관한 연구)

  • The viability of tubercle bacilli in the sputum specimens has been investigated after different periods of storage at diffeent temperatures and in the presence of different preservatives. No loss of culture positives was observed for one week storage at $4^{\circ}C$, but 9.8% 19.5%C, and 26.8% of sputums failed to yield positives on 2, 3, and 4 weeks of storage respectively. At $25^{\circ}C$ even one week storage made 19.5% of sputums fail to yield positive culture and 2, 3, and 4 weeks of storage made 36.6% 70.7%, and 90.2% of sputums fail to yield positive culture respectively. And contamination was unacceptably high beyond one week of storage at $25^{\circ}C$. Contamination of sputum specimens could be protected fairly well by 0.5% boric acid, by 5% trisodium phosphate or by 0.5% cetylpyridium chloride, but, except CP, the former two had no advantage at all to protect viability of tubercle bacilli over the specimens without preservative. The CP was much less harmful to the viability of tubercle bacilli than BA, yielding 61.0% and 31.7% of culture positives on 3 and 4 weeks of storage in the presence of CP, while BA yielded 34.1% and 4.9% of positives on the same respective periods of storage. Therefore CP may be useful to preserve sputums if it takes more than 2 weeks to transport them at the temperature of over $25^{\circ}C$.

Bactericidal Efficacy of a Disinfectant Spray Containing a Grapefruit-seed Extract, Citric acid, Malic acid and Benzalkonium Chloride against Salmonella Typhimurium and Brucella ovis

  • Salmonella spp. and Brucella spp. can cause considerable diseases on both humans and animals. In addition, these microorganisms cause the economic loss in animal farming and food industry. In this study, the disinfection efficacy of a disinfectant spray, composed to grapefruit seed extract, citric acid, malic acid and benzalkonium chloride, was evaluated against S. Typhimurium and B. ovis. A bactericidal efficacy test by broth dilution method was used to determine the lowest effective dilution of the disinfectant following exposure to test bacteria for 30 min at $4^{\circ}C$. The disinfectant and test bacteria were diluted with hard water (HW) or organic matter suspension (OM) according to treatment condition. On HW condition, the bactericidal activity of the disinfectant spray against S. Typhimurium and B. ovis was 5 and 4 fold dilutions, respectively. On OM condition, the bactericidal activity of the disinfectant spray was 2 and 1 fold dilutions against S. Typhimurium and B. ovis, respectively. As the disinfectant spray possesses bactericidal efficacy against foodborne pathogens such as S. Typhimurium and B. ovis, the disinfectant spray can be used to control the spread of bacterial diseases.

Physico-chemical Changes of Radish Cubes for Kakdugi during Salting (간절임중 깍뚜기용 무우 Cube의 이화학적인 변화)

  • Physico-chemical changes caused by salting Korean radish cubes (for Kakdugi) with sodium chloride solution were investigated. Two-centimter cubes of Korean radish were soaked in saline solution of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 percent concentration. Optimum salinity, 3% as determined by taste, was reached in six hours at 5% strength, two hours in 10%, one hour at 15% and within one hour at concentration of 15% plus. Radish cubes salted in 5, 10. 15, 20 and 25% sodium chloride solution in a cube/solution weight ratio of 1:1 decreased in volume from 7.6 to 11.2% after one hour, and from 11.2 to 17.9% after six hours. Decrease in moisture content was from 83.0 to 75.9% in one hour and from 74.5 to 68.5% after six hours. $Potassium\;ion(K^+)$, $calcium\;ion(Ca^{2+})$ and $magnesium\;ion(Mg^{2+})$ content was significantly decreased by salting, but $sodium\;ion(Na^+)$ content greatly increased. In addition, salting caused firmness of the cubes to decrease, and cell shapes to shrink by plasmolysis.

Electrowinning of Tungsten From Fused Bath Composed of Calcium Chloride, Calcium Oxide and Tungstic Oxide (텅그스텐의 熔融鹽電解)

  • The electrolysis of tungstic oxide dissolved in the bath of calcium chloride and calcium oxide was studied to produce metallic tungsten using carbon as anode and iron as cathode in the temperature range of 900^{\circ}$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. The binary phase diagrams $CaCl_2$-CaO and $CaCl_2-CaWO_4$ systems were constructed to determine the suitability of bath composition and the range of temperatures for the electrolysis. As $WO_3$ reacted with $CaCl_2$ to form oxychloride in the fused salt, the addition of the proper amount of CaO was necessary to avoid the loss of $WO_3$. The optimum compositions of fused bath were $CaCl_2$ 100 parts, CaO and $WO_3$ each 10 to 20 parts, with the CaO, $WO_3$ ratio greater than unity, to keep freezing point low and to prevent the vaporization of $CaCl_2$. The observed decomposition voltage at which $WO_3$ decomposes to W and CO was-0.1 volt, whereas the calculated was -0.3 volt. Metallic tungsten deposited at the cathode reacted easily with CO formed secondarily at the anode surface, to form WC below $1050^{\circ}C$, so that the cell temperature should be above $1050^{\circ}C$. The effects of cathode current densities on current efficiency were minor in the range of 1 to 5 $amp/cm^2$.

Preparation and Flame Retardancy of Poly(benzoxazole imide) Having Trifluoromethyl Group in the Main Chain (주사슬에 Trifluoromethyl 그룹을 갖는 Poly(benzoxazole imide)의 제조 및 난연 특성)

  • A series of poly(hydroxyamide)s (PHAs) having trifluoromethyl group were prepared by direct polycondensation of aromatic diimide-dicarboxylic acids with 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane by thionyl chloride and triethyl amine in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP). The PHAs exhibited inherent viscosity in the range of 0.54-0.96 dL/g at $35^{\circ}C$ in DMAc solution. All PHAs were readily soluble in a variety of organic solvents, whereas the polybenzoxazoles (PBOs) were quite insoluble except partially soluble in sulfuric acid. PHAs were converted to PBOs by thermal cycling reaction with heat of endotherm. The maximum weight loss temperature of the PHAs occurred in the range of $559-567^{\circ}C$. The PBOs showed relatively high char yields in the range of 47-59%. Pyrolysis Combustion Flow Calorimeter (PCFC) results of the PBOs showed 12-19 W/g heat release rate (HRR), and 2.7-3.6 kJ/g total heat release (total HR). The HRR of PBO 1 showed the lowest value of 12 W/g, which was 37% lower than that of PBO 3 (19 W/g).
