Electrospinning Fabrication of Juniperus Chinensis Extracts Loaded PU Nanoweb (전기방사를 이용한 향나무 추출물 함유 PU 나노웹 제조)

  • The uniform nanofibers of polyurethane with different contents of Juniperus Chinensis extracts were successfully prepared by electrospinning method. Polyurethane is widely used as functional polymers in the industrials, medical field as their properties can be tailor-made by adjusting their compositions. Juniperus Chinensis has been reported for anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral activities. PU/Juniperus Chinensis extracts composite nanofibers were produced at different Juniperus Chinensis extracts concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5wt.%). The effects of the major parameters in electrospinning process such as tip to collector distance (TCD), voltage, polymer concentration on the average diameter of electrospun nanoweb were investigated. As results, 12wt% PU solution concentration, 8kV applied voltage and 15cm tip to collector distance were identified as optimum conditions for electrospinning the composite nanofibers. The diameter and morphology of the nanocomposite nanofibers were confirmed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The resulting fibers exhibited a uniform diameter ranging from 435nm~547nm. It has been found that the average diameters of fibers decreased by the adding of Juniperus Chinensis extracts. These nanowebs can be used for medical materials, protective clothing, and antimicrobial filters.

Seasonal Changes in Voluntary Intake and Digestibility by Sheep Grazing Introduced Leymus chinensis Pasture

  • A study was conducted to investigate the seasonal changes in nutrient composition of pasture, voluntary intake and digestibility of sheep grazing an introduced Leymus chinensis pasture located in western Jilin Province, China. The whole-plant of L. chinensis and the samples simulating ingestion by sheep (simulating sample) were collected in spring (May, 2004), summer (July, 2004), autumn (September, 2004) and the end of winter (April, 2005). The contents of gross energy (GE), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and alkanes were determined. Voluntary intake and apparent digestibility of the nutrients in each season were also examined using 6 mature Chinese Northeast Merino ewes (differed among the seasons) grazing on a paddock of 1 ha size. The apparent digestibilities of GE, dry matter (DM), OM, CP, NDF and ADF of L. chinensis were significantly greater (p<0.05) in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. Metabolizable energy (ME) content was 12.13, 11.62, 8.66 and 10.40 MJ/kg DM for L. chinensis in spring, summer, autumn and winter respectively, and the corresponding voluntary feed intakes were 91, 119, 59 and 58 g/d per kg metabolic weight ($LW^{0.75}$). The ME contents and DM intakes in autumn and winter were significantly lower than in spring and summer (p<0.05). The intake of L. chinensis pasture was sufficient to provide ME requirements for maintenance by the dry ewes in all the seasons, but inadequate for maintenance protein requirement in winter. Effect of Body Size on Feeding Physiology of an Intertidal Bivalve, Glauconome chinensis Gray (Glauconomidae)

  • To determine the effect of body size on the clearance rate and ingestion rate of small intertidal bivalves, Glauconome chinensis, feeding experiments were conducted on individuals of 12 different size classes, from 4 to 16 mm in shell length. Relationships between morphological parameters were also determined. The clearance and ingestion rates of G. chinensis responded similarly to their body size, ranging from 1.3 to 28.2 mL/hr/ind. and from 24.0 to 458.5, ${\mu}gC/hr/ind$., respectively. Both rates increased significantly (p<0.001) as shell length increased from 4 to 9 mm, although neither rate changed significantly when shell length was in the range from 12 to 16 mm. The weight-specific clearance rate $(CR_w)$ and ingestion rate $(IR_w)$ decreased with increasing body size, with values from 1.0 to 3.1 L/hr/g and from 17.9 to 51.3 mgC/hr/g, respectively. The $CR_w$ of G. chinensis was intermediate compared to those of larger bivalve species. The clearance rate (CR) relative to flesh dry weight (FDW) of G. chinensis were fitted well to the power function: $CR=0.43\times(FDW)^{0.71}\;(r^2=0.89)$. The exponent of fitting equation (0.71) of G. chinensis was higher than those of Mytilus edulis (Walne, 1972), Crassostrea gigas (Walne, 1972), and Placopecten magellanicus (MacDonald and Thompson, 1986).

Growth Characteristics and Chemical Compounds in Schisandra chinensis Collections for the Selection of Superior Lines

  • There are about 2 genera and 49 species of Schisandraceae all over the world which grow 2 genera and 5 species in korea. As'Schisandra'genus, S. chinensis, S. repanda, S. nigra and S. viridicarpa are distributed. As 'Kadsura' genus, there is K. japonica species. Although S. chinensis is often used for food and herbal medicine, 'Cheongsoon'is the only cultivar in korea. Therefore cultivar breeding is required for standardized production of Schisandra chinensis. To select superior lines, characteristics of collected varieties was investigated. These collections were from all the country including Mungyeong, Muju and Jangsu. In the case of 'Schisandra chinensis', analysis of chemical compound is very important. Because in 'Korean Pharmacopoeia', Schisandrin has to contain more than 0.7% of sum of Shizandrin, Gomisin A, Gomisin N as standard compound. According to the investigation, the weight of SC-154 was the highest one that was 99g of fresh fruit and 60g of dried fruit in the 100 granulas of it. As the control group, the weight of cultivar 'Cheongsoon'was 57g of fresh fruit and 40g of dried fruit. The chemical compounds such as Shizandrin A, Gomisin A, Gomisin N and Shizandrin C from the collections were analyzed by HPLC. As a result, all average of total content was 1.67% satisfied with the standard that is over 0.7%. Among them, SC-13, SC-22, SC-40 and SC-45 had more than 2.0% of compound. In this case, the content of Gomisin N was relatively higher than that of the other collections. It can be used for high content compound breeding. This above results indicate that these findings could be used for breeding superior Schisandra chinensis through selection of high quality resource.

Fine Structure of Spermatozoa of Venus Fish, Aphyocypris chinensis (Pisces: Cyprinidae) from Korea (한국산 왜몰개 Aphyocypris chinensis 정자의 미세해부학적 구조 (Pisces: Cyprinidae))

  • Spermatozoa of Aphyocypris chinensis was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The investiation revaled that, spermatozoa display a round head, a small midpiece and a long tail region. In the spermatozoa, the nucleus contains highly condensed homogeneous chromation with small electron lucent areas. The base of the nucleus is slightly invaginated laterally by the nuclear fossa which contains the proximal centriole. The two centrioles orientated at an obtus angle (130°) to each other. The midpiece encircles the flagellum and is completely separated from it by the cytoplasmic channel. The midpiece contains more than 12 mitochondria. The mitochondria are arranged in 4~5 layer and are asymmetrically distributed in the postnuclear cytoplasm. The mitochondria surround the proximal part of the flagellum. The flagellum has classical 9+2 axoneme and no lateral fins. The spermatozoa of A. chinensis are similar to those of other cyprinids having a spherical head with a shallow nuclear fossa, a short midpiece including the asymmetrical arrangement of mitochondria and the lateral insertion of flagellum. However, there are some differences in the orientation of centrioles and the number of the mitochondria.

The Origin and Daily Dose of Allii Chinensis Bulbus in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases and Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber (상한론(傷寒論)과 금궤요략(金匱要略)의 해백(薤白) 기원종과 1일 복용량)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assume the origin and daily dose of Allii Chinensis Bulbus in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases and Prescriptions of the Gold Chamber. Methods : I assumed the origin with Book of Materica Medica such as Illustration and Classic of Materia Medica(本草圖經), Illustration and Consideration of Plant's Name and Reality(植物名實圖考), The Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia Forth Edition, Annotation of Hangeul Treatise of Cold Damages Diseases, and daily dose based on general principle applied on dose of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases. Results : In Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases and Prescriptions of the Gold Chamber, the original species of Allii Chinensis Bulbus was Allium chinense G. Don. It was to be measured with weight. It was too big to write on size due to it's 10~30mm length and 3~12mm in diameter. And due to irregular size, it can't be written on number, too. Daily dose of Allii Chinensis Bulbus in Whaeyeok-san(回逆散), Gwalluhaebaekbanha-tang(栝樓薤白半夏湯) was 3 Ryang(兩), which was the most common case in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases. And that in Gwalluhaebaekgyeji-tang(栝樓薤白桂枝湯), Gwalluhaebaekbaekju-tang(栝樓薤白白酒湯) is 8 Ryang(兩), which was the largest dose as dried herb in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases Conclusions : The original species of Allii Chinensis Bulbus was Allium chinense G. Don. The daily dose of Allii Chinensis Bulbus was 3 Ryang(兩)(19.5g) in Whaeyeok-san and Gwalluhaebaekbanha-tang, and was 8 Ryang(兩)(52g) in Gwalluhaebaekgyeji-tang and Gwalluhaebaekbaekju-tang.

Inhibitory Activities of Ethanol Extracts from Saururus chinensis L. against Stress-Induced Hemorrhagic Gastritis (삼백초 에탄올 추출물의 위출혈성 스트레스 위염 억제 효과)

  • In this study, gastritis inhibitory substance was ethanol-extracted from Saururus chinensis in order to examine the effect as a part of natural bioactive substance research. In an oral administration experiment, S. chinensis was administered at doses of 0.25 g/kg B.W. to 2 g/kg B.W., resulting in stabilization at 1.5 g/kg B.W. and an $LD_{50}$ of 1.81 g/kg B.W. In a chronic toxicity experiment, 0.5 g/kg B.W. of S. chinensis was administered for 13 weeks, but toxicity was not observed. S. chinensis ethanol-extracts were administered at a concentration of 250 or 500 mg/kg B.W. before induction of gastritis. Gastrorrhagia, stomach edema, cytokine production, and cell damage were reduced in a concentration-dependent manner. Therefore, S. chinensis ethanol extracts inhibit cell damage by stress-induced hemorrhagic gastritis in a concentration-dependent manner via inhibition of cytokine expression.

Effect of Saururus chinensis Powder Addition on the Quality of Sugar Snap Cookies (삼백초 분말을 첨가하여 제조한 슈거스냅 쿠키의 품질특성)

  • Saururus chinensis powder was added into cookie dough at 5 levels (0%, 1.5%, 3%, 4.5%, and 6%) by partially replacing equivalent amount of wheat flour in cookie formulation, and cookies thus made were evaluated for physicochemical properties and sensory quality by a small semi-trained panel. Thickness and density of cookies increased significantly with increase in Saururus chinensis powder content (p<0.05); however, those of dough were not affected (p<0.05). The pH of both dough and cookies decreased significantly as the level of Saururus chinensis powder increased (p<0.05). Lightness and yellowness decreased significantly as the Saururus chinensis powder content increased while redness increased significantly (p<0.05). Spread factor decreased with the powder addition (p<0.05). Sensory evaluation indicated that samples with higher amount of the powder received higher scores in terms of taste, flavor, and color but not for hardness (p<0.05). Finally, correlation analysis showed that level of Saururus chinensis powder incorporation was well-correlated with most of the physicochemical properties and sensory attributes studied.

A phylogenetic study of Korean Iris L. based on plastid DNA (psbA-trnH, trnL-F) sequences (Plastid DNA (psbA-trnH, trnL-F)의 염기서열에 의한 한국산 붓꽃속(Iris L.)의 계통분류학적 연구)

  • Molecular phylogenetic studies were conducted to evaluate taxonomic identities and relationships among 16 species of the korean genus Iris L. Korean Iris was grouped by five clades. Series Laevigatae, Tripetalae, Laevigatae and Sibiricae was included to Clade I. Series Chinensis, and Easatae was composed to Clade II. Series Chinensis was included to Clade III. Series Chinensis was composed to Clade IV. Series Crossiris, Pumilae and Pardanthopsis was included to Clade V. Iris dichotoma, I. mandshurica and I. tectorum formed one clade, and it was located mostly in the basal group. I. minutiaurea and I. koreana was not formed independent clade, so it is not clear between them about taxonomic identities. Iris tectorum was established taxonomic system by Series Cossiris in Subgenus Crossiris. Series Chinensis (I. odaesanensis, I. minutiaurea, I. koreana, I. rossii var. latifoia, and I. rossii) was distinguished is clear by Series Chinensis (I. odaesanensis, I. minutiaurea and I. koreana) and Series Chinensis (I. rossii var. latifoia and I. rossii). The Genus Iris was divided into four subgenus (Limniris, Crossiris, Iris and Pardanthopsis). We thought that evolved to subgenus Limniris in subgenus Crossiris, iris and Pardanthopsis.

Analysis of Antioxidative Activity and Antimutagenic Effect of Ethanol Extract from Schizandra chinensis Baillon (오미자(Schizandra chinensis Baillon) 에탄올 추출물의 항산화 활성 및 항돌연변이 활성 분석)

  • In this study, the antioxidative activity and antimutagenic effect of ethanol extracts from Schizandra Chinensis Baillon were assessed with regard to natural antioxidants. The antioxidative activity and antimutagenicity of ethanol extracts from Schizandra chinensis Baillon were evaluated by measuring the radical-scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, and by performing the Ames test using 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO) and sodium azaid as a mutagen with Salmonella typhimurium TA100, respectively. The total polyphenolic compound and flavonoid compound contents of Schisandra chinensis Baillon were also assessed. The DPPH radical-scavenging activity of ethanol extracts from Schisandra chinensis Baillon was 57.2% on the $500\;{\mu}g$/assay. The $IC_{50}$ on DPPH radical-scavenging effect of ethanol extract was $435\;{\mu}g$/assay. In addition, the inhibition rates of ethanol extract from Schisandra chinensis Baillon toward mutagenicity induced by 4-NQO and sodium azide were 82.45% and 45.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents of the extract were 9.53 mg/g and 3.97 mg/g, respectively. These results indicate that the ethanol extract from Schisandra chinensis Baillon evidences a fairly good antioxidative and antimutagenic effect.
