This research focuses on rationality of behavior of children purchasing, using, and disposition in consideration of the importance of children consumers, also the purpose of this research is to provide the basic material of consumer education for children. This research was conducted a questionnaire survey of enrolled children and their mothers at 4 public and private elementary schools in Seoul and Kyonggi-do area. It progressed from September 2 to September 7 in 2002, and tea three hundred eighty six reponses except false entries were analyzed using SPSS/PC+ program. The results of the research are as follows; rationality of consuming behavior of children is higher when they are girls, their grades are lower, allowance' amount is larger and children record their allowance, children have lots of the experience of consumer education, children are less influenced by their group.
This study investigated the general information, unbalanced diet, and dietary habits of 86 children in Daegu. The research was undertaken to analyze the current state of diet and dietary habits of children, and to provide basic data for nutrition education. The results reveal that younger children have a more unbalanced diet. Children dislike side-dishes the most. Furthermore, due to the longer time taken to consume food, parents persuade children to eat quickly. Children were also determined to have a high intake of foods and drinks containing sugar; beverages containing sugar are consumed 1-2 times a week by 5-year-olds, and once daily by 6- and 7-year-olds. The results of this study can be applied to provide basic data for nutritional education, and assist in the development of dietary programs for young children.

This study aims to identify the propensity to consume and housing characteristics according to life cycle as the main independent variable. It also tries to understand the consumption power and housing style of each cycle and analyze whether there are differences between each life cycle, ultimately aiming to match the propensity to consume and housing style with each cycle. For empirical analysis, on and off-line surveys of 488 people were collected and analyzed by cross analysis, factor analysis and analysis of variance. The prime research findings are as follows: First of all, factor analysis on propensity to consume showed four main sub-factors as rational consumption, conspicuous consumption, trend consumption, and status consumption. Secondly, current and preferred housing styles ranked from modern, natural, casual, classic and romantic, which proved that people are currently housed in preferred housing styles. Thirdly, in case of housing-related characteristics of life cycles, the size of the house increased as the levels progressed, and then decreased at level 6 when the children grew into adulthood. The majority of the population was paying a monthly rent, a few were leasing, and a very few owned their housing. 58% were living in apartments, but in levels 1-2, more were living in row houses and high-rise residential buildings, while in level 6 it was detached houses. Fourthly, the propensity to consume according to life cycle tended to shift from conspicuous and trend-based consumption to rational consumption as the cycles progressed. Fifthly, the preferred housing styles were modern and natural styles, regardless of life cycle. These study results can be applied to product development and marketing activities based on their accurate analysis of customers' needs, which can thus bring further customer satisfaction.

A survey on the children's thought for kimchi intake and practical amount of kimchi consumption were conduction in April of 1995 to get basic information needed for the development of special kimchi for the children. And the effects of nutritional guidance on consumming kimchi was also investigated. Total of 1100 students in 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade from public and private elementary school participated in this survey. The eighty three percent of student think they should eat kimchi mainly because kimchi is good for the health(48.0%) and kimchi is our traditional food(31.8%). However, only 26.5% of children consume more than 5 pieces($4{\times}5cm$) of kimchi per mela and 64.5% consume less than 1~2 pieces. This shows that children's opinion(p<0.001), preference(p<0.001) and actual consumption(p<0.001) for kimchi was found to be very significant. Thus the nutritional guidance is important as much as the development of children's kimchi. Children wanted kimchi which is sweet, mild hot and not too strong in flavor. Ingredients children wanted in kimchi were pear, apple, tangerine, carrot and onion. Children's most favorite foods cooked with kimchi were stir fried kimchi rice and kimchi stew. But children did not like kimchi hamberger, pizza topped with kimchi and rice cooked with bean sprout and kimchi.
The purpose of this study was to determine if Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) variables predict soy milk intake in a sample of WIC participants in 2 Illinois counties (n = 380). A cross-sectional survey was used, which examined soy foods intake, behavioral beliefs, subjective norms, motivation, and intention. Soy product intake was low at both sites, and many participants (40%) did not know that soy milk was WIC approved. Most (> 70%) wanted to comply with their health care providers, but didn't know their opinions about soy milk (50-66%). Intention was significantly correlated with intake (0.507, P ${\leq}$ 0.01; 0.308, P ${\leq}$ 0.05). Environmental beliefs (0.282 and 0.410, P ${\leq}$ 0.01) and expectancy beliefs (0.490 and 0.636, P ${\leq}$ 0.01) were correlated with intention. At site 1, 30% of the variance in intention to consume soy milk was explained by expectancy beliefs and subjective norm beliefs (P < 0.0001); at site 2, 40% of the variance in intention was explained by expectancy beliefs. The TPB variables of expectancy beliefs predicted intention to consume soy milk in WIC participants. Therefore, knowing more about the health benefits of soy and how to cook with soy milk would increase WIC participants' intention to consume soy milk. Positive messages about soy milk from health care providers could influence intake.
Prevalence of obesity and dietary consumption of ten-year-old school children in Seoul were investigated. Three hundred forty boys and three hundred forty two girls from families of various housing pattern in Seoul were chosen for this study. Informations of the stduy were obtained from April 22 to June 11, 1985, by means of prepared questinnaires for general environmental factors, anthropometry for height, weigth and triceps skinfold theickness and interview to get 24 -hour food intakes of individuals. All the data collected were analyzed by using SPSS program. Average nutrients intakes of the subjects were satisfactory with respect toquality or quantity . Children from A group tended to consume more nutrients than B or C group. Physical growth of the subjects were similar to the ones for average school children in Seoul, but greater than korean national average. Children from A group were taller and heavier than B group whom were taller and heavier than C group . Prevalence of obesity were 15.7 % and 11.7 % of the subjects according to standards of relative body weight and triceps skinfold thickness. Higher prevalence were observed in boys than in girls and children from A group than B, and B group than C group. so therefore it could be summarized that children from A group consumed more nutrients, had better physical growth, and became obese more frequently than children from B or C.
In Korea, several national cross-sectional surveys monitor the diet, nutritional status, and health status of children. This continual dedicated national surveillance system contributes to the identification of nutritional and health issues, establishment of public health policies, and development of nutrition recommendations. This paper provides recent information about the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and describes key nationwide survey findings published in the last 5 years on infant feeding practices and the dietary intake and nutritional status of Korean infants, children, and adolescents. There have been increasing trends in children, and teenagers who skip breakfast, eat fast food, consume sugary drinks, have vitamin D deficiency, and are obese. This review will inform pediatricians, nutritionists, and other health care practitioners who track children's growth and development. It may also help researchers and policymakers identify diet-related policies and strategies for chronic disease prevention in Korean infants, children, and adolescents.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the dietary quality of food consumed away from home among Korean children and adolescents. Methods: Data were obtained from the 2010~2012 KNHANES (Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) and included 3,583 subjects aged 7 to 18 years old. The frequency of food consumed away from home was dichotomized into more than once or less than once per day. Results: Thirty percent of subjects were shown to consume food away from home more than once per day, and older children from higher income households showed a higher frequency of food consumed away from home compared to other children. The percentage of children and adolescents cited as regularly skipping breakfast was 19%. Individuals who ate out more than once per day showed higher consumption of energy and sodium than those who ate out less than once per day. Conclusion: Excessive intakes of energy and sodium are associated with obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity-related diseases. Thus, there is a need for nutritional intervention and educational efforts to improve child nutrition and prevent obesity.
The nutritional status of pre-school children is important for both physical growth and functional development. This study investigated the anthropometric, nutrient intakes and dietary quality of the pre-school children living in Asan for planning nutritional education program. The dietary intakes were measured by 2-day 24 hr recall recorded by children's mothers and the anthropometric data were collected by measuring children's weights, heights, and percent body fat at Asan Public Health Center. The children were 161 boys and 129 girls aged 5 and 6 years. When children's nutritional status was determined by their anthropometric status (underweight, normal weight and overweight) determined by z-score (normal range between -1.00 and 1.00), only 1.4% of the children belonged to underweight group while 55.7% and 42.9% belonged to normal and overweight groups, respectively. Significantly higher number of children belonged to overweight group for 5 year-olds. No differences were observed in nutrient intakes, nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and index of nutritional quality (INQ) values among nutritional status groups. Intakes of the most nutrients were adequate, but NAR and INQ of calcium and zinc were low. When nutrient intakes, NAR and INQ were compared by sex or age, all nutrient intakes were appropriate except calcium and zinc intakes of 6 year-olds. Nutrient intakes of 5 years were higher than those of 6 years. The mean of nutrient adequacy ratio (MAR) was 0.85 and mean INQ was 1.51 for all participants. The nutritional management program for pre-school children in Asan would be directed differently by age groups and education material should contain contents educating to consume moderate amount of food for 5 year-olds and to increase intake of foods with mineral nutrients such as calcium and zinc for 6 year-olds.
This study examined the preference and consumption of chungkukjang among elementary school children in Seongnam, Korea. The subjects included 583 students(male 300, female 283) who were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using the SAS package. The results showed that 91.9% of the female students, 91.6% of children from nuclear families, and 90.7% of children with stay-at-home mothers, consumed chungkukjang. Among the children who had eaten chungkukjang previously, most had consumed it at home, and 65.5% of the students responded that chungkukjang was tasty. The data also revealed that female students, children from nuclear families, and those with stay-at-home mothers had greater preference for chungkukjang than male students, children from extended families, and those with working mothers. When asked why they dislike chungkukjang, both male and female students who had eaten it responded because 'it smells bad' and that 'it is not tasty'. However, among the students who had never eaten it, the male students replied because 'it is not tasty'(33.3%) and that 'it is not eaten at home'(27.8%), and the primary responses of the female students were 'it is not eaten at home'(65.2%) and 'it is not tasty'(21.7%). However, the subjects who had tried chungkukjang previously answered that in the future they would like to have it more frequently, as compared to the subjects who had never eaten chungkukjang. Therefore, to increase knowledge and improve perceptions of chungkukjang foods, families should give children many opportunities to try them, and in return, children will consume chungkukjang foods with pride. Furthermore, it is important that society as well as mass media, which have great influence on children, show concern and offer support in promoting chungkukjang.
