The children's clothing market continues to grow in Korea, despite the declining total fertility rate. This study aims to investigate the changes in Korean children's clothing market according to the launching time of brands. To this end, it analyzed 90 children's clothing brands in 2019. The results of this study are as follows. These children's clothing brands had been actively launched since 2000. Although the total fertility rate in Korea has dropped to approximately one percent, the number of children's clothing brands has increased significantly each year since 2005. Sixteen children's clothing brands were launched between 2005 and 2009, twenty-three were launched between 2010 and 2014, and thirty-five were launched between 2015 and 2019. Various brands are competing in Korean children's clothing market. Overseas brands have continued to expand their market share while the market share of domestic brands has decreased continuously. Clothing brands, including adult clothing brands other than children's clothing brands, are actively entering Korean children's clothing market. Many overseas, luxury, and sportswear brands have entered Korean children's clothing market. Many sportswear brands have launched children's clothing brands, with a significant increase since 2013. The results of this study show that Korean children's clothing market has changed from a local market to a global fashion market.
The purpose of this study was to investigate children and their mothers'purchasing behaviors for children's clothing. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted to 640 students(5, 6th graders) and their mothers in the elementary schools in Seoul; 517 were used for the data analysis. Most children wanted to have clothing when they feel not having proper clothing to wear. When parents purchased a clothing, female students more actively expressed her opinion than male students. The comfort was the most important criteria by children about new clothing, and children most complained of monotonous style for their clothing after using the clothing. Mothers usually bought children clothing in changing season. The most important evaluatived criterion was design. The lower level of mothers'clothing interest had less complain than other groups about children's clothing.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the periodical change of Korean children's clothing from 1960 to 2000. As valuable historical data, 794 children's clothing in wedding pictures in these periods were collected for this study. Research method was content analysis and frequency, cross table analysis, and ${\chi}^2$ test were conducted for data analysis. The results of this study were as follows. The children's clothing in 1960s had very humdrum and limited design and plain pattern. And most of children in this period wore Western clothes of casual style. In 1970s, children's clothing was enriched in terms of design, pattern, color and ornament. However, clothing design for children was not developed yet, so form of children's clothing in this period was showed as duplication of adult clothing design. In 1980s, The children's clothing was developed with enhancement of the level of living. Various style and sophisticated design were appeared and design and size system for children were developed. With increasement of social interest of leisure and sports, casual style was especially popular in this period for both of children and adult in this period. In 1990, rapid decrease of birth rate resulted in parents' excessive interest and investment for their children. In this effects, children's clothing in 1990s had luxury, various, and individual characteristics.
Based upon literature survey, this research aims to analyze western children's clothing and characteristics over centuries. It was not until the 18th century that children were given serious consideration and that fabrication of clothing began to be designed only for children. The very first clothes which revolutionized children's wear was 'a la matelot' in the 18th century which freed children from physical restriction, recognized gender difference, and sailor suit became popular among all sexes and adopted as school uniform. And then children's clothing was shortened in length and adopted tubular silhouette, which allowed greater comfort and movement. The 20th century saw children's wear reform to be carried out after the World War II due to invention of synthetic fiber, easy care dress material, mass production system and sophistication of marketing methods. Further evidence of improvement of children's social status can be found in contemporary designs: for example, 'casualized' wear, 'character design' which reflects children's psychology and 'family look' which is designed to be worn with mothers. This evolution of children's clothing within western dressing support the view that children's clothing is not a miniature of adult wear but it reflects idiosyncrasies of the era and exerts children's dignity.
Mothers are a powerful consumer force in the children clothing market, and somatotype plays an crucial role on their evaluation of clothing and decision to purchase. It is therefore essential to identify the roles of mother's somatotype & somatotype cognition in relation to purchasing of children clothing. This study aimed to investigate the effects of mother’s actual somatotype & somatotype cognition on their children’s clothing evaluative criteria. In order to compare the clothing evaluative criteria of the groups and among the groups by mother’s somatotypes at the point of children’s clothing purchases, mother’s actual somatotype & somatotype cognition of their self and their children were adopted as variables. Total usable questionnaires were obtained from 147 middle-aged mothers of students aged between 10 & 13. Results indicated that practical, commodity & symbolic dimensions of children’s clothing evaluative criteria were used differently by each group to decide on purchase of clothing for thin, moderate & heavy children. This study provides important commercial information about mother’s actual somatotype & somatotype cognition related to their children’s clothing evaluative criteria, and as such can be used strategically to the effective communication with consumers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of children's personality traits and parental child-rearing attitudes on clothing attitudes and color evaluation of preschool children. The subjects for this study consisted of 360 five-year-old children who were attending a preschool and their parents in Cheju Island Korea. Employed mothers had significantly higher score on love acceptance attitude than unemployed mothers did. Female children had more conservative attitude on clothing sex-role than male children did There were no significant gender differences in parental child-rearing attitudes. There were significant relationships between gender and preferred clothing colors. Male children were more likely to prefer blue red, green, and prussian blue for the colors of clothing than were female children while female children liked pink yellow and orange more than male children. Boys selected blue and girls selected pink as the most preferred clothing color. Overall preschool children chose red as the most preferred color black as the most disliked color. The children's sex identification by clothing color was highly consistent with the conservative attitude of adults for all colors. That is preschool children identified pink red and yellow with female color while prussian blue blue and green with male color. Clothing interest of boys was influenced by the mother's state of employment and academic trait. The boys high in academic trait and whose mothers did not have job were high in clothing interest. Clothing management of boys was influenced by emotionality and love acceptance rearing Ttitude. Clothing independednce of boys was influenced by authority control rearing attitude Clothing sex-role of boys was influenced by familism trait. The boys high in familism trait had open-hearted attitude in clothing sex-role. Clothing interest of girls was influenced by academic trait clothing management by sociality clothing independence by emotionality and clothing satisfaction by familism trait. Therefore the more positive personality children had the higher clothing interest and the more desirable clothing attitudes they had.
The purpose of this study is to search 1) Favorite color preference for clothing 2) Concept development for respective color preference concerned with sex, and 3) concept development for clothing clolr and clothing design. The results are as follows. 1. Liked-color preference for clothing color; female children liked pink, and male children liked blue. 2. Disliked-color preference for colthing female children and male children disliked black color. 3. Boyish color; White, Green, Blue, Black. 4. Girlish color; Yellow red, Pink, Red, Pruple, Yellow. 5. Concept development for clothing color and clothing design; Children aknowledged more the colthing color than the colthing design.
As children's apparel industry expands, there are many researches on purchasing and wearing children's clothing and optimal sizes, but researches on purchasing and wearing children's clothing and the appropriateness of sizes comparing average body shape and obese children are still inadequate. Therefore, in this research Late Elementary Schoolgirls ranging in age from 12 to 13 are categorized into the average or the obese body type, and by comparing and analyzing purchasing and wearing children's clothing and the appropriateness of its sizes between these groups, the problems in the size system of children's apparel are realized and the basic information about designing children's clothing for average body shape and non-average body shape(out-size)children are presented. The survey questions were composed of topics about general personal information, the purchasing practice and wearing practice, the appropriateness of its size when wearing children's clothing and the practice of mending apparel according to the satisfaction level of children's clothing sizes. Because subjects are often too big to wear children's clothing, and in the case of obese children the deviation of a body type is amplified, therefore in buying and wearing children's clothing, they demonstrate different forms of purchasing and wearing characteristics than adults. Considering the practice of increasing obesity in children due to westernized eating habits and decreased physical activities, along with developing programs for improving obesity, the development of an optimal size system in response to various body types will become an important challenge.
The purpose of this study were: (1) to determine buying practices of mothers concerning child-ren's shirts and slacks; (2) to find out the characteristics of satisfaction and dissatisfaction about these same two items of children's clothing; (3) to make gathered information available to consumers and manufacturers, and to suggest ways to improve children's clothing for consumers. The data for this study were collected through questionaires to 789 mothers of seven and eight years old children in three elementary schools from December 3 to December 14, 1978. The findings are as follows: 1. More than $71\%$ of mothers stated that all of their children's shirts and slacks were purchased ready-made. More than half of the children acquired some part of their clothing through hand-me-downs. 2. The store in which mothers purchased their children clothing most frequently was near-by market or wholesale market and the next was children's wear specialty shop. 3. Childrens accompanied mothers more frequently when slacks were being purchased than when shirts were. 4. More than half the children of seven and eight years old wear size 9$\~$10 and the next common size was size 11$\~$12. 5. Most mothers determined the proper size in clothing by having the child actually try on the clothing. 6. $44\%$ of mothers stated that they have a fitting problem with shirts and $64\%$ of mothers stated that they have fitting problems with slacks.
The purpose of this study was to explore children's gender differences in their clothing orientation and clothing Purchase behaviors. For this study, data were collected from 166 fifth and sixth graders attending three elementary schools in Seoul. Questionnaire survey data were analyzed through factor analysis, cross-tabulation, and test. In result, gender differences were found in children's clothing orientation, clothing purchase behaviors, and post-purchase behaviors. Girls were more interested in clothing than were boys, and thus girls used a variety of information sources for clothing shopping, taking an active role during the purchase process, compared to boys. Different characteristics of two gender groups of older children in school age were described. Marketing implications based on findings were provided for practitioners.
