The present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of three extracts (hot water, 50% ethanol and mixed solvent;water, ethanol, butylene glycol, propylene glycol) of dried chestnut, chestnut shell, chestnut leaves and dried chestnut leaves obtained from Castanea crenata tree. When conducted DPPH assay, radical scavenging activity of ethanol extract of chestnut shell was the highest with $IC_{50}$$10.8{\mu}g/mL$ among four extracts from these parts (p < 0.05). In additional results by the xanthine oxidase assay, antioxidant activity showed that water extract of chestnut leaves showed the highest xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity in the tested extracts (p < 0.05). Futhermore, extracts of chestnut shell and leaves exhibited no cytotoxicity in RAW 264.7 cells (p < 0.05). Also, anti-inflammatory activity by NO assay showed LPS-induced NO was significantly inhibited following treatment with extracts of chestnut shell and leaves of 3mg/mL (p < 0.05). These data suggest that extract of chestnut shell have antioxidant and anti-inflamantory activity including chestnut leaves. Therefore, it is considered that Castanea crenata research range and selection of functional material can broaden chestnut shell to other fractions such as chestnut and chestnut leaves.
Preference of chestnut brown chafer (CBC), Adoretus tenuimaculatus was examined from chestnut leaves which were treated with different light condition, temperature and nitrogen fertilization. More CBC was attracted to leaves which grown at $30^{\circ}C$ than grown at $20^{\circ}C$,$ 25^{\circ}C$ and in the field. When attracted number of CBC was compared among full sunlight-grown, cloth shaded-grown and dark-grown plants, 4.0 in full sunlight grown and 5.0 in dark-grown plants. Amount of nitrogen fertilizer did not influence CBC feeding. The attractiveness of undamaged leaves with non-feeding beetles, leaves with feeding damaged, and leaves with artificial damaged was compared in replicated laboratory trials by placing the treatments in the petri-dish and counted the number of beetles that landed on the plants after 6 hr treatment. The highest number of beetles was attracted to chestnut leaf with feeding damaged ($7.7\pm$0.6) than undamaged leaf with non-feeding beetles ($5.3\pm$0.6) and artificial damaged ($4.3\pm$0.6). Managnese content in the leaves of chestnut grown in shade cloth-grown condition was higher than that in the leaves of chestnut that had been exposed to full sunlight condition and dark condition, and feeding damaged leaf.
This study was conducted to survey some characteristics in growth of perilla by fertilization level organic matter. Corn stalk, acorn and chestnut were used as organic fertilizer in this study. In the height of perilla, chestnut fertilizer with 880kg/10a that R2 is 0.9996 showed the height level, and followed by acorn and corn stalk in order. Number of the harvested leaves was the highest in acorn among the three organic fertilizer by chestnut and corn stalk in order. However, number of the harvested leaves continuously was the highest in chestnut. Weight of a leaf was more effective at three kinds of organic fertilizer than control. There were no difference in the rate of dried leaf weight according to kinds of organic fertilizer. On the other hand, the rate of dried leaf weight by growth period was different. It was found that the rate of dried leaf in 30days or 110days. Diameter of perilla stem at 30cm above the ground according to kinds and fertilizer level of organic fertilizer was surveyed. However, the difference was not detected in this study.
Chestnut (Casranea crenata S. et Z.) leaves and flowers were extracted with 80% methanol and then fractionated with ethylacetate, methanol and water. Their antimicrobial activities in each fraction were investigated. Methanol fraction of the chestnut leaves and flower showed strong antimicrbial activities against both of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. The ethylacetate and water fraction, however, showed only weak antimicrobial activities when the antimicrobial activities were occurred. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the methanol extracts of the chestnut leaves and flowers against 5 strains of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria were at $60\;{\mu}g/disc$. The extracts of the chestnut leaves and flowers inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis at 0.5% (w/w) concentration. In order to investigate the effect of extraction methods on the B. subtilis, scanning electron microscope was used. The B. subtilis was damaged when the methanol extracts of the chestnut leves and flowers were at 500 ppm.
To study the potential of the chestnut(Castanea crenata S.) leaves, as raw materials for functional food and medicine, chemical components, antioxidative and antimicrobial activities were carried out. The proximate composition was composed of total sugar 11.95%, crude fat 11.50%, crude fiber 10.11%, crude protein 7.50% and ash 1.79% and the components of major minerals were Ca 215.7 mg%, 196.6 mg%. The content of vitamin C wag 12.5 mg% and free sugar was composed of glucose 3.33%, fructose 0.25% and sucrose 0.022%. The major fatty acids in leaves of chestnut were composed of linoleic acid and the amounts of those showed 37.88% area percent. The major amino acids of chestnut leaves were glutamic acid(295.4 mg%), proline(285.7 mg%), aspartic acid(245.5 mg%), arginine(240.8 mg%), phenylalanine(237.4 mg%) and leucine(230.6 mg%). The ratio of essential/total amino acid was 48.3%. Methanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction showed stronger activity of the hydrogen donating activities, each of 72.52 % and 84.12 %, respectively. In solvent extracts using methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform and hexane, methanol extract showed the most effective antimicrobial activities. Antimicrobial activities of ethyl acetate fraction of methanol extract was higher than those of other fractions.

Combined applications of rice bran with pine leaves were tested to examine the inhibitory effects to paddy weeds and increased yield of rice for developing techniques of environment-friendly weed management in paddy rice fields. Weed control efficacy at 60 days after treatment was improved to 88.8% by combined application of rice bran with pine leaves, while weed control efficacy by single application of rice bran showed 67.5%. The other weed control efficacy combined with chestnut leaves and barley straws were 76.3% and 69.9% respectively. Combined application of rice bran with pine leaves was more effective to broadleaf weeds such as Monochoria vaginalis. Weed control efficacy by combined application with pine leaves was 100% until 70 days after rice transplanting and maintained weed control effect up to 90 days after transplanting. Rice yield by combined application of rice bran with pine leaves was 526 kg/10 a, which was higher yield than by combined application with barley straws, single application of rice bran, natural snail application and hand weeding.

In this study, the gallic acid content of various varieties of chestnuts (Daebo, Okgwang, Chukpa, Samjosaeng) was investigated during the period between May 2018 to July 2019. A quantitative analysis was performed by HPLC using extracts of chestnut, inner skin, outer skin, branches, chestnut, male flower, and the male flower for each type of chestnut tree. Gallic acid was identified by dissolving standard gallic acid in water and analyzed three times in the concentration range of 100, 200, 250, and 500ppm. Linearity was confirmed by the peak area ratio at each concentration. Among the different chestnut varieties, the gallic acid content was highest at 0.0863% in Chukpa, followed by Daebo, Okgwang, and Samjosaeng. While comparing the average gallic acid content of each part of the chestnut tree, it was observed that the falling male flower had the highest content at 1.2100%, followed by chestnut leaves, chestnut pines, and branches. In a comparison of the inner skins, the Daebo variety had the highest gallic acid content at 0.7463% followed by Chukpa, Okgwang, and Samjosaeng. The outer skin of Samjosaeng had the highest content at 0.4918%, followed by Chukpa, Daebo, and Okgwang. The pines of the Samjosaeng chestnut had the highest content at 1.3035%, followed by Daebo, Chukpa, and Okgwang.
Since July 2005, survey of chestnut ink disease was carried out in chestnut stands located at southern parts of Korea. Dead chestnut trees showing inky ooze on necrotic trunks were found in two different locations. In order to isolate and identify the causal fungus, infected tissues and soil samples around dead or dying trees were collected and placed on Phytophthora-selective medium. Rhododendron and chestnut tree leaves were used as a bait to isolate the fungus from soil samples by attracting zoospores in soil suspensions. On V-8 culture medium, the isolates produced homothallic oogonia with protuberances ($34.0-46.2{\times}21.9-26.7{\mu}m$) abundantly, but did not produced sporangia. Mass production of sporangia was possible by immersing agar plugs with actively growing mycelium in the creek water at $18^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. Sporangia were papillate, and ovoid to obpyriform ($17.0-38.9{\times}14.6-29.2{\mu}m$) in shape. Comparison of the ITS sequences revealed that the isolates had 100% identity to the P. katsurae isolates from Japan and New Zealand and 99.6% identity to other P. katsurae isolates. All of the examined isolates from Korea were completely identical to each other in ITS sequence. Numerous sporangia were formed in filtered as well as unfiltered creek water, but no sporangia formed in sterilized distilled water. Light induced sporangia formation, but has no influence on oospore formation. Amendments of ${\beta}$-sitosterol in culture media have no significant effect on mycelial growth but significantly stimulate oospore and sporangia formation.
For unknown reasons, a few trees in a private chestnut orchard in Icheon si, Gyunggi-do suffered leaf chlorosis and growth decline. Based on symptoms, phytoplasma was a probable cause. Leaf samples were collected from two symptomatic and non-symptomatic trees in the orchard for phytoplasma detection. An amplicon of about 1.2 bp size was obtained from both symptomatic trees by PCR with the universal 16S rDNA primers. Sequences of these amplicons were found to have 99% nucleotide sequence identity to the corresponding genomic region of 16SrIII (X-disease group). More than 100 phytoplasma isolates, such as Candidatus phytoplasma pruni, Milkweed yellows phytoplasma, Goldenrod yellows phytoplasma, Tsuwabuki witches'-broom phytoplasma, Candidatus Phytoplasma trifolii, etc. were involved in the list. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the sequence obtained in this study closely clustered with Candidatus phytoplasma groups. While one of the amplicons shared 91% identity with the Candidatus phytoplasma castaneae, the other shared only 47%. It needs further analysis and investigation to determine the exact taxonomy. Meanwhile, based on the analysis of the sequences, chlorosis, and small leaves were associated with phytoplasma.
