  • Nuclear-kappa B(NF-$\kappa$B) plays a role in the regulation of genes responsible for inflammatory and immune responses as well as growth control of cells. A cell-based assay system for guiding NF-KB activity was developed to determine the influence of activated NF-KB in human keratinocytes. It suggested that this system could be used to determine the quantitative measurement of NF-$\kappa$B activity in the human skin and allow the monitoring of anti-inflammatory agent for dermatological means from various environmental stimuli. • Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is one of the representative biodegradable polymers with high ductility and processability to replace petroleum-based polymers. Many investigations have been conducted to broaden the applications of PBAT in a variety of industries, including the food packaging, agricultural mulching film, and logistics and distribution fields. Foaming process is widely known technique to generate the cell structure within the polymer matrix, offering the insulation and light weight properties. However, there was no commercially feasible foam product based on biodegradable polymers, especially PBAT, and maintaining a proper melt viscosity of the polymer would be a key parameter for the foaming process. In this study, chemical foaming agent and cross-linking agent were introduced to PBAT, and a compression molding process was applied to prepare a foam sheet. The correlation between cell morphological structures and mechanical and physical properties was evaluated. It was found that PBAT with foam structures effectively reduced the density and thermal conductivity, allowing them to be suitable for applications such as insulation and lightweight packaging or cushion materials.

  • The dependence of the IR optical properties of PMMA/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite on the alumina content was investigated in the wavelength range of $3500-2800cm^{-1}$. The samples were prepared via emulsion polymerization technique using oleic acid as a coupling agent. Grafting density calculations were carried out by means of elemental analysis CHN to yield the best coupling agent content. FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of a chemical bond between aluminum oxide and oleic acid. The outcomes of XRD analyses showed the presence of cubic gamma aluminum oxide in the nanocomposite, in contrast to the amorphous nature of PMMA. TEM images showed the core-shell morphology of the particles other than pristine PMMA. Optical constants of the nanocomposite were calculated based on FTIR spectra and the Kramers-Kronig equations. The presence of nano alumina modified some of the optical indexes in IR region.

  • A dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction based on solidification of floating organic droplet (DLLME-SFO) has been developed as a new approach for the extraction of trace copper in water and beverage samples followed by the determination with flame atomic absorption spectrometry. In the DLLME-SFO, 8-hydroxy quinoline, 1-dodecanol, and methanol were used as chelating agent, extraction solvent and dispersive solvent, respectively. The experimental parameters related to the DLLME-SFO such as the type and volume of the extraction and dispersive solvent, extraction time, sample volume, the concentration of chelating agent and salt addition were investigated and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the enrichment factor for copper was 122. The method was linear in the range from 0.5 to $300\;ng\;mL^{-1}$ of copper in the samples with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9996 and a limit of detection of $0.1\;ng\;mL^{-1}$. The method was applied to the determination of copper in water and beverage samples. The recoveries for the spiked water and beverage samples at the copper concentration levels of 5.0 and $10.0\;ng\;mL^{-1}$ were in the range between 92.0% and 108.0%. The relative standard deviations (RSD) varied from 3.0% to 5.6%.

  • Conventional solvent-based polyurethane (PU) is well established for wide applications, such as textile treatments, surface coating, adhesive and so on. Due to the demands of safety, economic, and environmental protection, the solvent-based PU is restricted and has been phasing out and aqueous-based PU is becoming the world market trend, which is an environmental friendly product. The chemical resistance, physical and mechanical properties of aqueous-based PU are still not competible with solvent-based PU. Because of aqueous-based PU is a linear thermoplastic polymer with lower average molecular weight. Their improvements are normally performed by a post-curing reaction or a polymer hybridization to enhance the polymer cross-linking density. Hybridization of PU with aqueous-based epoxy resin or acrylate emulsion and then cured by a curing agent for improving the performance properties and reducing the cost of aqueous-based PU.Furthermore, a special function is added to aqueous-based PU increasing the application value, for examples, flame retardation, polymeric dyes, hydrophilic and etc.

  • In the course of in vitro and in vivo screening for bioherbicidal agents, a hyphomycete fungus, Myrothecium sp. F0252 was selected as a candidate for the biocontrol of weeds. The isolate was identified as Myrothecium roridum Tode ex. Fries based on the morphological characteristics and 18S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis and registered as Myrothecium roridum F0252. In order to evaluate the in vitro effect of M. roridum F0252 on germination of ladino clover and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) seeds, spore solution of the fungus was employed in two concentrations, $6.5{\times}10^6$ and $2.5{\times}10^7$ spores per mL and then inoculated to the seeds. The fungal spores inhibited the seed germination, infected the seedlings, and caused an abnormal withering and inhibition of seedling growth. In addition, when the herbicidal activity of crude ethyl acetate extract from the liquid culture was assessed on a mini-plant, duck-weed (Lemna paucicostata (L.) Hegelm.), the extract showed high inhibitory effect at the level of $12.5{\mu}g$ per mL. On the other hand, in vivo herbicidal activity of M. roridum F0252 was evaluated by a whole plant spray method. M. roridum F0252 exhibited strong and broad-spectrum herbicidal activity. The herbicidal values ranged from 95-100% against 7 weeds, including Abutilon avicennae and Xanthium strumarium, and 70-80% against Digitaria sanguinalis and Sagittaria pygmaea. When the nutritional utilization (95 carbon sources) pattern of M. roridum F0252 was investigated, it varied with water activity ($a_w$) and temperature conditions, supplying good, basic information in regard to nutritional utilization for proper cultivation and formulation. Our results showed that M. roridum F0252 might be used as a potential biocontrol agent against weedy plants.

  • Novel $CO_2$-soluble 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) chelating agents were synthesized and evaluated for solubility and metal ion extraction ability in supercritical $CO_2\;(Sc-CO_2)$. Among them, secondary amide-containing 8- HQ derivatives cannot be dispersed well into Sc-$CO_2$, but tertiary amide-containing derivatives can dissolve completely in Sc-$CO_2$ even at low CO2 pressures, perhaps owing to the predominant intermolecular interaction between the chelating agent and the $CO_2$ molecule. Based on 8-HQ chelating agent solubility data, we investigated the extraction of metal ions ($Co^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$) using two highly $CO_2$-soluble 8-HQ derivatives (4d, 4e) in Sc-$CO_2$. The extraction efficiency of tertiary amide-containing 8-HQ ligands, both fluorinated and non-fluorinated forms, was dramatically increased in the presence of diethyl amine (organic base). We suggest that diethyl amine could play an important synergistic role in the stronger metal binding ability of 8-HQ through an in situ deprotonation reaction in Sc-$CO_2$ medium.

  • In this study, the wear performance of manganese phosphate coating on SM45C with addition agent of Tartaric acid and Citric acid were investigated. The Surface morphology of manganese phosphate coating was examined by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). It is found that Mn, P, Fe, O and C. The crystal structure and thee composition was analysis and determined by using XRD. The XRD results indicated that manganese phosphate coatings are mainly composed of $(Mn,Fe)_5H_2(PO_4)_44H_2O$ and consists of a lot of close packed lump crystalline. Based on the time dependence of morphology and the weight of manganese phosphate coating, it shows that the phosphating process mainly includes three stages: corrosion of the substrate, creation and growth of phosphate crystal nucleus and thickening of manganese phosphate coating. The wear tests were performed in a ball on disc apparatus as per ASTM G-99 Standard. It was showed that the initial wear was quite high followed by low sludge.

  • Adsorption of an oil-proof agent (OPA)onto cellulose fibers during the papermaking process was investigated using UV-Vis spectrophotometry by measuring the OPA concentration decrease in the solution. From the calibration curve, the spectrum were converted to chemical concentrations in solution, from which the amount adsorbed onto the fiber surface could be determined. Thus, it was possible to determine the total amount adsorbed onto the fibers and in solution. Using this approach, we studied the adsorption behavior of the OPA onto the fiber surface and derived its, ${\Gamma}^s_t={\Gamma}^s_{\infty}(1-e^{-k_{\alpha}t})$. The values of the parameters kaand ${\Gamma}^s_{\infty}$ were determined using a mathematic model based on a mass transfer equation. Ultimately, a complete was derived: $Q={\alpha}{\cdot}\sum\limits_{i-1}^m{\pi}d_il_i{\cdot}M_A{\cdot}(1-e^{-k_{\alpha}t})/A_N$.

  • In this study, thin film gas sensor based on tin oxide was fabricated to examine its characteristics. Target gas is acetonitrile ($CH_3$CN) which is a blood simulant for the chemical warfare agent. Sensing materials are SnO$_2$ SnO$_2$/Pt, and Sn/Pt with thickness from 1000 to 3000 $\AA$. The sensor consists of a sensing electrode with inter-digit (IDT) type in front side and a heater in rear side. Resistance changes of sensing materials are monitored on real time basis using a data acquisition board with a 12-bit analog to digital converter. Sensitivities are measured at different operating temperatures also with different gas concentrations and film thickness. The high sensitivity is obtained for Sn (3000 $\AA$)/Pt (30 $\AA$) at 30$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 ppm. Response and recovery times were about 40 and 160 s, respectively. Repetition measurements showed very good results with $\pm$3% in full scale range.
