  • To recycle the steel slag as manufactured composite materials of polymer concretes, we used the atomizing method to make round aggregates from steel slag, which is treated as industrial wastes. A round rapid-cooled steel slag was used to replace fine aggregate (river sand) or coarse aggregate (crushed aggregate), depending on the grain size. To examine general physical properties of polymer concrete composites manufactured from rapid-cooled steel slag, the polymer concrete specimen with various proportions depending on the addition ratio of polymer binder and replacement ratio of rapid-cooled steel slag were manufactured. In the result of the tests, the mechanical strength of the specimen made by replacing the optimum amount of rapid-cooled steel slag increased notably (maximum compressive strength 117.1 MPa), and the use of polymer binder, which had the most impact on the production cost of polymer concrete composites, could be remarkably reduced. However, the mechanical strength of the specimen was markedly reduced in hot water resistance test of polymer concrete composite.

  • The pyrolysis has been universally applied to recycle the waste artificial marble. However, the existing heat treatment equipment has relatively low heat transfer efficiency into the inner part of the waste artificial marble. Besides, it leads to unnecessary excessive gas during the partial carbonization of the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and raises the risk of fire due to heat at an extremely high temperature. This study suggests the process of pyrolysis at the formation state after adding the starch to waste artificial marble to overcome above-mentioned problems. As the result of experiments, this method showed that the pyrolysis of waste artificial marble was greatly improved at comparatively low temperature condition of $350^{\circ}C$. Moreover, it also manifested the effect on securing the stability and energy savings necessary for the recovery of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and ${\alpha}$-alumina (${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$).

  • The activity of the catalytic system composed of Fe$(acetylacetonate)_3$ (Fe$(acac)_3$), triphenylphosphine, and diethylaluminum chloride for the dimerization of bicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene (2,5-norbornadiene, NBD) to produce hexacyclic endo-endo dimer (hexacyclo[$7.2.1.0^{2,8}.1^{3,7}.1^{5,13}.0^{4,6}$]tetradec-10-ene, Hnn) was significantly enhanced by the presence of $AlCl_3$, especially at the molar ratios of NBD/Fe$(acac)_3$ of 500. XPS analysis of the catalytic systems clearly demonstrates that $AlCl_3$ facilitates the reduction of Fe$(acac)_3$ to form active species, Fe(II) and Fe(0) species. The layer separation was observed when [BMIm]Cl was used along with $AlCl_3$, but catalyst recycle was not very successful.

  • Recently, a large number of researches about concrete containing high volume fly-ash(HVFA) have been carried to obtain carbon dioxide reduction, resource recycle and durable option in concrete industry. The quality of fly-ash such as chemical composition and fineness has high variability due to the differences of used fuels, operation condition in power plant. The aim of this study is to investigate the performances of fly-ash cement mortar containing different type of fly-ashes. The basic analysis of fly ash such as chemical composition, SEM image analysis were performed. Many mortar specimens were fabricated to evaluate the properties (compressive strength, drying shrinkage and carbonation) of mortar with various fly ash. From the test results, the quality of each fly ash must be considered and fully weighted in fly ash concrete.

  • Plastics of the marine environment are broken gradually down into smaller particles by chemical weathering, called "microplastic". Microplastics absorb organic pollutants that are persistent bioaccumulative substances. If marine animals ingested microplastic added to contaminant, it will lead to a bioaccumation through the food web. It eventually destroy health of marine environment and is harmful to marine top predators including humans. Also, Microplastics can impact marine animals by leaching the endocrine disruptor in microplastic itself as well as playing an adsorbent role of organic pollutants. Persistent and bioaccumulative substances in Korea have been regulated in terms of chemical risk but existing regulations largely have been limited in land-based source management of microplastic. Thus, the harmful impact will be increased whether the microplastics absorbed contaminants. To prevent risk of persistent bioaccumulative substances, this study suggests the following: (1) the strict management of microplastic by designating the hazardous substances, (2) expand the use of biodegradable plastic, (3) the effort for reuse and recycle, (4) the expand of microplastic clean-up programs.

  • In accordance with the amendment of the Industrial Safety and Health Act of 2007, Korea completely prohibited the import, distribution and manufacture of asbestos like Europe and Japan. Accordingly, the current problem of asbestos is the safe maintenance and disposal of asbestos construction material, the disposal of asbestos, and the final disposal of asbestos building materials. If the asbestos building material is made harmless, it may be classified as general waste or as recyclable waste. Therefore, this study evaluated the physical and chemical characterization of detoxified asbestos powder and the applicability of secondary products. In this study, it was found that applying the appropriate temperature and pressure for catalysis during asbestos desalination through low temperature chemical treatment was the most important factor.

  • As one of the methods for recycling the FRP used for the small and medium-sized waste ships, separation of the roving layer from the mat has some merit in a sense of the recycling energy and the environmental effects. Similar characteristics between the roving and the mat make the mechanically automatic differentiation difficult. They, however, contain different ratio of the resin and the glass and the thickness. In this study photo physical differentiation between the two layers has been made using (1) boiling concentrated sulfuric acid which can dissolve the resin in the FRP layer and (2) hydrogen fluoride(HF) solution which can reacts with $SiO_2$ fragments of the glass. Furthermore coloring the FRP sample with water-soluble dye following the HF treatment makes the roving layer more distinguishable photophysically. The implementation of HF treatment has been successfully tested in this study.

  • Soil acidification challenges global food security by adversely influences soil fertility and agricultural productivity. Carbonized agricultural residues present a sustainable and ecofriendly way to recycle agricultural waste and mitigate soil acidification. We evaluated the effects of organic amendments on lettuce growth and soil chemical properties in two soils with different pH levels. Carbonized rice husk was produced at 600℃ for 30 min and rice husk was treated at 1% (w·w-1). Carbonized rice husk increased soil pH, electrical conductivity, total carbon content, and nitrogen content compared with untreated and rice husk treatments. Furthermore, this study found that lettuce growth positively correlated with soil pH, with increasing soil pH up to pH 6.34 resulting in improved lettuce growth parameters. Statistical correlation analysis also supported the relationship between soil pH and lettuce growth parameters. The study findings showed that the use of carbonized rice husk increased the constituent elements of lettuce, such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphate content. The potassium content of lettuce followed a similar trend; however, was higher in acidic soil than that in non-acidic soil. Therefore, improving the pH of acidic soil is essential to enhance agricultural productivity. It is considered advantageous to use agricultural residues following pyrolysis to improve soil pH and agricultural productivity.

  • Pyroprocessing has been developed for the purpose of resolving the current spent nuclear fuel management issue and enhancing the recycle of valuable resources. Pyroprocessing has been developed with the dry technologies which are performed under high temperature conditions excluding any aqueous processes. Pyro-processes which are based on the electrochemical principles require pretreatment processes and a voloxidation process is considered as a pretreatment step for an electrolytic reduction process. Various kinds of gas conditions are applicable to the voloxidation process and the understanding of Cs behavior during the process is of importance for the analyses of waste characteristics and heat load on the overall pyroprocessing. In this study, the changes of chemical compounds with the gas conditions were calculated by analyzing gas-solid reaction behavior based on the chemical equilibria on a Cs-Te-O system. $Cs_2TeO_3$ and $Cs_2TeO_4$ were selected after a Tpp diagram analysis and it was confirmed that they are relatively stable under oxidizing atmospheres while it was shown that Cs and Te would be removed by volatilization under reducing atmosphere at a high temperature. This work provided basic data for predicting Cs behavior during the voloxidation process at which compounds are chemically distributed as the first stage in the pyroprocessing and it is expected that the results would be used for setting up material balances and related purposes.

  • Compared with the natural marble, the artificial marble has the advantages of excellent appearance, high degree of finish, even color, fine pressure and wear resistance, bear erosion and weathering, etc. It can be widely used in kitchen countertops, bath vanity tops, table tops, furniture, reception desks, etc. However, large amounts of artificial marble waste such as scraps or dust have been generated from sawing and polishing processes in artificial marble industry. Waste from artificial marble industry is increasing according to demand magnification of luxurious interior material. Artificial marble wastes can be recycled as aluminum oxide used as raw materials in electronic materials, ceramics production, etc., and methyl methacrylate(MMA) which become a raw material of artificial marble by pulverization, pyrolysis and distillation processes. The characteristics of artificial marble wastes was analyzed by using TGA/DSC and element analysis. Crude aluminum oxide was obtained from artificial marble waste by pulverization and thermal decomposition under nitrogen atmosphere. In this work, Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the pyrolysis process. The characteristics of crude aluminum oxide was evaluated by chromaticity analysis, element analysis, and surface area.
