  • Heavy minerals in the marine sand near Haeju bay, Hwanghae-do, North Korea were separated using the gravity and the magnetic separators. And their mineralogical study was carried out. Ilmenite, magnetite, hematite, zircon and monazite were observed as the valuable minerals, and quartz, orthoclase, muscovite, hornblende and garnet existed as gangue minerals. In the result of quantitative analysis with SIROQUANT program, the contents of the valuable minerals separated with the 2nd gravity separation (the shaking table separation), the 1st magnetic separation (rare earth magnetic separation) and the 2nd magnetic separation (the Eddy current magnetic separation) were increased into 4%, 10% and 76~89% (under the condition of 7000 G and 10000 G in magnetic strength), respectively. The contents of ilmenite, monazite and zircon recalculated from the chemical composition differed from the results of the quantitative analyses by SIROQUANT program, but the entire tendency bears some analogy with it. Under the conditions of 7000 G and 10000 G in 2nd magnetic separation the contents of ilmenites were concentrated with 53% and 66%, respectively. The content of monazite was 1.2% in the magnetic fractions of the 1st magnetic separation. The content of zircon was shown 1.4% under the condition of 10000 G in the 2nd magnetic separation, and was displayed 9% in +50 mesh of non-magnetic fraction of 1st magnetic separation, especially.

  • This study was conducted in order to analyze the ingredients and antioxidant activity of Suaeda japonica (turkey), which is abundantly present in Korea where mud flats are well formed due to the characteristics of halophytes. In the analysis of general composition, contents of carbohydrates, proteins, ash, and moisture were 10.7%, 8.3%, 7.6%, and 72.5% respectively. Among minerals, sodium was measured as 5.4%, which means that most ash was made of sodium. Heavy metal contents of lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury were 0.86 ppm, 0.04 ppm, 0.39 ppm, and 0.01 ppm, meaning Suaeda japonica satisfied standard food values. The 70% ethanol extract from Suaeda japonica was evaluated for its free radical scavenging activity and compared with a commercial antioxidant, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole). As a result, the scavenging activities of hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, and xanthine oxidase of the extracts were equivalent to 30~50% of that of BHA.

  • All the applications of natural zeolites make use of one or more of their physical and chemical properties: adsorption, ion-exchange and related molecular sieve properties, dehydration and rehydration, and siliceous composition. Accordingly, the applications of zeolite have been carried out in the various aspects because of its large cation exchange capacity and adsorption properties. In this paper, the adsorption effect of heavy metal ions in wastewater on zeolite mineral by batch adsorption process is studied. The amounts of adsorbed ions were variable by original pH and ionic concentration, especially original pH of solution had an important effect on the adsorption. In case of low pH solution, e.g. below 3.0, clinoptilolite adsorbed $Pb^{2+}$ ,$ Cd ^{2+ }$ , $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{ 2+}$ , but mordenite almost did not adsorb except $Pb^{2+}$ . Under the same conditions, these ions were more adsorbed on clinoptilolite than on mordenite mineral. The velocity of adsorption was relatively fast and it was confirmed by shaking test that the equilibrium of adsorption could be attained in about one hour. The species of exchangeable cation of zeolite had an effect on its removing ability and zeolite of the sodium-exchanged type was the best.

  • Electrum-sulfide minerals of the Namsan Au-Ag mine were deposited in two stages of quartz and calcite veins that fill fault planes in Mesozoic granitic rocks (230~155 Ma). The K/Ar radiometric dating of hydrothermal sericite indicates that mineralization is early Cretaceous age ($127{\pm}3.0Ma$). Mineralogic, fluid inclusion and sulfur isotopic data show that ore minerals were deposited at temperatures between $340^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ from fluid with salinities of 3 to 6 equiv. wt % NaCl. Evidence of fluid boiling (and $CO_2$ effervescence) indicates a maximum pressures of 100 bars. The formation temperature and $fs_2$, of Au-mineralization from the Namsan mines are mainly $280{\sim}230^{\circ}C$ and $10^{-11}{\sim}10^{-13}$ atm, respectively. Au deposition was likely a result of boiling caused to chemical change (pH, $f_{O2}$, ${\Sigma}_{H_2S{\cdot}{\cdot}}$) of ore-fluids. Sulfur isotope composition of sulfide minerals (${\delta}^{34}S=5.1$ to 8.2‰) are consistent with ${\delta}^{34}S_{{\Sigma}{H2S}}$ value of +6 to +7‰, suggesting an igneous source of sulfur partially mixed with wall-rock sulfur.

  • Phillipsite-type zeolite powders were synthesized from domestic coal fly ash by hydrothermal reaction with 2.0 M-3.5M NaOH solution at $80^{\circ}C{\sim}120^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The properties of zeolite were investigated by XRD, SEM and IR spectroscopy. The effects of chemical composition of fly ash, reaction temperature and NaOH concentration on the zeolite synthesis were well appeared on IR spectra. It is found that the $TO_4$(T=Si, Al) tetrahedra have a well ordered structure as the $SiO_2$ content, synthesis temperature and NaOH concentration become high.

  • Power transformer insulation oil is critical to the useful life of the transformer. Although mineral base insulation oil is the most common type of transformer insulation oil in use, environmental and safety concerns has encouraged the development of biodegradable alternatives. Today, $Envirotemp^{(R)}\;FR3^{TM}$ is in commercial use and this study is aimed at ascertaining the possibility of applying the oil in Malaysia power transformers. A sample of $Envirotemp^{(R)}\;FR3^{TM}$ was tested to measure and compare the technical (including electrical, chemical and physical) properties of the oil according to Malaysian standards. The study found that the oil sample had better qualities, such as higher dielectric strength, lower dissipation factor, higher flash and fire points, higher moisture absorption capability, and less dissolved gases composition amongst others. However, it was also ascertained that further development in this area could be hindered due to Malaysia's lack of standards for biodegradable oil.

  • The current study investigated Saudi Arabian oil fly ash impacts on Egyptian clay bricks' structural and radiation shielding properties. To produce the required bricks, crushed clay minerals from the Hafafit area were mixed with 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 % wt.% Saudi Arabian oil fly ash and pressed at a pressure rate of 68.55 MPa. Identification of the minerals in the chosen clay was achieved via X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the material's morphology and chemical composition were determined through scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray. The fabricated bricks' density was reduced by 36.3 % through increasing the concentration of fly ash from 0 to 40 wt%. Then, the fly ash addition's influence on the fabricated clay bricks' γ-ray shielding properties was investigated by Monte Carlo simulation, which found a reduction in the fabricated bricks' linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) by 41.2, 36.0, 33.8, and 33.8 % at the 0.059, 0.103, 0.662, and 1.252 MeV γ-ray energies, respectively. The LAC reduction caused an increase in the fabricated bricks' half-value thickness, transmission factor, and the equivalent thickness of the lead. Moreover, the thicker fabricated sample thicknesses were found to have high γ-ray shielding capacity and can thus be used in radiation shielding applications.

  • Some industrial minerals used in domestic industries such as monazite, apatite, bauxite, and ilmenite belong to NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) because they show a high radioactivity. Products, semi-products, wastes, and by-products which show higher radioactivity than NORM belong to TENORM (Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials). Apatite used for manufacturing phosphate fertilizer in Namhae Chemical company belongs to NORM, and its by-product, phospo-gypsum, belongs to TENORM. A geological investigation is needed for the future environmental impact assessment of the Namhae Chemical company's site. According to survey results of the Namhae Chemical company's site, soil mineral composition indicated the mixture of minerals derived from the country rock (quartz, feldspar, mica, $l4{\AA}$ mineral, kaolin and amphibole) and minerals from the gypsum open-air storage yard (gypsum and apatite). Soil samples showed average content of U 4.6 ppm and Th 10 ppm, which are similar to average crustal abundances. They also show average contents of $^{40}K$ 191-1,166 Bq/kg, $^{226}Ra$ 15.6-710 Bq/kg, and $^{232}Th$ 17.4-72.7 Bq/kg, which indicate moderate levels of radio nuclide. But $^{226}Ra$ anomaly in the gypsum open storage yard is clearly confirmed and $^{232}Th$ anomaly is also confirmed in the east road side of the factory and nearby mountain areas. Soil external hazard indices ranged 0.24-2.01 with the average 0.54. Although most external hazard indices were lower than 1, which means radiation hazard index to be negligible, 5 samples out of total 40 samples showed higher values than 1, and further detailed investigation is needed.
