  • $LiFePO_4$ has been received attention as a potential cathode material for the lithium secondary batteries. In our study, $LiFePO_4$ cathode active materials were synthesized by a solid-state reaction. It was modified by coating $TiO_2$ and carbon in order to enhance cyclic performance and electronic conductivity. $TiO_2$ and carbon coatings on $LiFePO_4$ materials enhanced the electronic conductivity and its charge/discharge capacity. For lithium polymer battery applications, $LiFePO_4$/solid polymer electrolyte (SPE)/Li and $LiFePO_{4}-TiO_{2}/SPE/Li$ cells were characterized by a cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge cycling. The electrode with $LiFePO_{4}-carbon-TiO_{2}$ in PVDF-PC-EC-$LiClO_{4}$ electrolyte showed promising capacity of above 100 mAh/g at 1C rate.

  • Effects of the surface fluorination on the electrochemical charge-discharge properties of $Mg_2$Ni electrode in Ni-MH batteries fabricated by mechanical alloying were investigated. After 20h ball milling, Mg and Ni powder formed nanocrystalline $Mg_2$Ni. Discharge capacity of this alloy increased greatly at first one cycle, but due to the formation of Mg(OH)$_2$ passive layer, it showed a rapid degradation in alkaline solution within 10cyc1es. In case of 6N KOH +xN KF electrolyte (x = 0.5, 1, 2), a continuous and stable fluorinated layer formed by adding excess F$^{[-10]}$ ion, increased durability of $Mg_2$Ni electrode greatly and high rate discharge capability(90-100mAh/g). 2N KF addition led to the highest durability of all tested here. The reason of the improvement is due to thin MgF$_2$, which can prevent the $Mg_2$Ni electrode from forming Mg(OH)$_2$layer that is the main cause of degradation.

  • In this study, the $LiCoO_2/LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ mixed cathode electrodes were prepared and their electrochemical performances were measured in a high cut-off voltage. As the content of $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ increased in a mixed cathode, the reversible specific capacity and cycleability of the electrode enhanced, but the rate capability was deteriorated. On the contrary the rate capability of the cathode enhanced, but the reversible specific capacity and cycleability were deteriorated, increasing the content of $LiCoO_2$ in the mixed cathode. The cell of $LiCoO_2/LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ ($50:50 wt\%$) mixed cathode delivered a discharge capacity of ca. 168 mAh/g at a 0.2 C rate. The capacity of the cell decreased with the current rate and a useful capacity of ca. 152 mAh/g was obtained at a 2.0 C rate. However, the cell showed very stable cycleability: the discharge capacity of the cell after 20th charge/discharge cycling maintains ca. 163 mAh/g.

  • Expanded graphites were used as anode materials of high power Li-ion secondary battery. The expanded graphite was prepared by mixing the graphite with $HClO_4$ as a intercalation agents and $KMnO_4$ as a oxidizing agents. The physical and electrochemical properties of prepared expanded graphites through the variation of process variables such as contents of intercalation agent and oxidizing agent, and heat treatment temperature were analyzed for determination of optimal conditions as the anode of high power Li-ion secondary battery. After examing the electrochemical properties of expanded graphites at the different preparing conditions, the optimal conditions of expanded graphite were selected as 8 wt.% of oxidizing agent, 400 g of intercalation agent for 20 g of natural graphite, and heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$. The sample showed the improved charge/discharge characteristics such as 432 mAh/g of initial reversible capacity, 88% of discharge rate capability at 10 C-rate, and 24 mAh/g of charge capacity at 10 C-rate. However, the expanded graphite had the problems of potential plateaus like natural graphite and lower initial efficiency than the natural graphite.

  • This paper aims to report the effect of surface treatment on graphite and its effect on the improvement of $Al_2O_3$ and $nano-Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$. The structure and property of surface treatment on graphite were determined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electrochemical property and safety were determined by charge/discharge cycler, accelerating rate calorimeter. The composite with different metallic oxide exhibited the first efficiency of 82.5% and specific capacity of 350 mAh/g. Although the composite showed same efficiency and specific capacity at first cycle, surface treatment on graphite by $nano-Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ exhibited a higher charge/discharge rate, cycle life and thermal stability.

  • Initial electrochemical characteristics of $LiCoO_2$ electrode for lithium ion battery with various content of super s black as conductive material were evaluated through the charge/discharge with the potential range of 4.3V to 2.0V versus $Li^+/Li^+$. The rate of C/4 and C/2 by the 3 electrode test cell composed with an electrolytic solution of 1 mol/l $LiPF_6/EC+DEC(1:3\;by\; weight)$. Lithium was used as reference electrode. High impedance charge behavior was observed at early stage of charge. In the case of $3\%w/w$ of super s black as conductive material, the specific resistance of the high impedance releasing was $3.82\;{\Omega}\;{\cdot}\;g-LiCoCo_2$ at the current density of $0.5 mA/cm^2$, which corresponds 7 times of the specific resistance of electrode $(0.728 g-LiCoO_2)$. At second charge, the specific resistance of the high impedance releasing was 63 mn · g-Lico02, which corresponds 12eio of the specific resistance of electrode and only $1.7\%$ of that of the first charge. The first charge and discharge specific capacities at C/4 rate were 160-161 and $153\~155mAh/g-LiCoO_2$, respectively, to lead $95.4\~96.4\%$ of coulombic efficiencies and ca. $6 mAh/g-LiCoO_2$ of initial irreversible specific capacity. Specific resistance at the end of charge and rest showed low value at content of super s black between 2 and $7\%w/w$, which agreed with characteristics of irreversible specific capacity. Capacity densities were reduced by the increasing the content of conductive material. They were 447 and 431mAh/ml when 2 and $2.9\%w/w$ of super s black were used, respectively, at the rate of C/4.

  • In order to prepare anode materials for high power lithium ion secondary batteries, carbon composites were fabricated with a mixture of petroleum pitch and coke (PC) and a mixture of petroleum pitch, coke, and natural graphite (PC-NG). Although natural graphite has a good reversible capacity, it has disadvaantages of a sharp decrease in capacity during high rate charging and potential plateaus. This may cause difficulties in perceiving the capacity variations as a function of electrical potential. The coke anodes have advantages without potential plateaus and a high rate capability, but they have a low reversible capacity. With PC anode composites, the petroleum pitch/cokes mixture at 1:4 with heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ (PC14-1000C) showed relatively high electrochemical properties. With PC-NG anode composites, the proper graphite contents were determined at 10~30 wt.%. The composites with a given content of natural graphite and remaining content of various petroleum pitch/cokes mixtures at 1:4~4:1 mass ratios were heated at $800{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$. By increasing the content of petroleum pitch, reversible capacity increased, but a high rate capability decreased. For a given composition of carbonaceous composite, the discharge rate capability improved but the reversible capacity decreased with an increase in heat treatment temperature. The carbonaceous composites fabricated with a mixture of 30 wt.% natural graphite and 70 wt.% petroleum pitch/cokes mixture at 1:4 mass ratio and heat treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ showed relatively high electrochemical properties, of which the reversible capacity, initial efficiency, discharge rate capability (retention of discharge capacity in 10 C/0.2 C), and charge capacity at 5 C were 330 mAh/g, 79 %, 80 %, and 60 mAh/g, respectively.

  • Li(Ni, Co, Mn)$O_2$ has been known as one of the most promising cathode materials for lithium secondary batteries. However, it has some problems to overcome for commercialization such as inferior rate capability and unstable thermal stability. In order to address these problems, surface modification of cathode materials by coating has been investigated. In the coating techniques, selection of coating material is a key factor of obtaining enhanced properties of cathode materials. In this work, we introduced solid electrolyte (Li-La-Ti-O) as a coating material on the surface of $Li[Ni_{0.3}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.3}]O_2$ cathode. Specially, we focused on a rate performance of Li-La-Ti-O coated $Li[Ni_{0.3}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.3}]O_2$ cathode. Both bare and Li-La-Ti-O 2 wt.% coated sample showed similar discharge capacity at 0.5C rate. However, as the increase of charge-discharge rate to 3C, the coated samples displayed better discharge capacity and cyclic performance than those of bare sample.

  • Lattice structure, hydrogen absorption characteristics, discharge capacity and cycle life of $V_{22}Ti_{16}Zr_{16}Ni_{39}X_7$(X= Cr, Co, Fe, Mn, Al) alloys were investigated. The matrix phases of these alloys were the C14 Laves phase. Chromium-containing alloy had a vanadium-rich phase in addition to the Laves phase. The chromium, maganese, or aluminum-containing alloys had lower hydrogen equilibrium pressure and larger hydrogen absorption content than the cobalt or iron-containing alloys. The discharge capacities of these alloys were 270~330mAh/g. The discharge capacity according to the alloying element X decreased in the order of Mn>Cr>Co, Al)Fe. The charge/discharge cycle lives of the chromium, cobalt or iron-containing alloys were longer than those of maganese or aluminum-containing alloys due to the lower vanadium dissolution rate.

  • The pure crystalline $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder has been prepared by a simple solid state reaction of $Li_2CO_3$ and $V_2O_3$ precursors under nitrogen gas containing 10 mol % hydrogen gas flow. The structure of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder was analyzed using Xray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The stoichiometric $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder was used as anode active material for lithium secondary batteries. Its electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and constant current methods using lithium foil electrode. The observed specific discharge capacity and charge capacity were 360 mAh/g and 260 mAh/g during the first cycle, respectively. In addition, the cyclic efficiency of this cell was 72.2% in the first cycle. The specific capacity of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode rapidly declines as the current rate increases and retains only 30 % of the capacity of 0.1C rate at 1C rate. The crystallinity of the $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode decrease as discharge reaction proceeds. However, the relative intensity of main peaks was almost recovered when the cell was charged up to 1.5 V.
