Solid base catalysts for biodiesel production were synthesized by impregnating basic metal species on two support materials with large specific surface area : zeolite and pyrolysis char. KL zeolite and Undaria pinnatifida char were impregnated with KOH aqueous solution and calcium nitrate solution, respectively, to enhance the basic strength. The catalysts synthesized were characterized using Hammett indicators and $CO_2$-TPD analysis. Biodiesel was produced using soybean oil and methanol over the catalysts synthesized. The content of fatty acid methyl esters was measured to evaluate the catalytic activity. Generally, the catalytic activity increased with increasing quantity of basic metal impregnated but impregnation of excessive amount of metal could cause reduction in the activity.
Gasification kinetics of an Indonesian sub-bituminous coal-char with $CO_2$at elevated pressure was investigated with a pressurised drop tube furnace reactor. The effects of reaction temperature (900~140$0^{\circ}C$), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (0.1~0.5 MPa), and total system pressure (0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5MPa) on gasification rate of the coal char with $CO_2$have been determined. It was found that the gasification rate was dependent on the total system pressure with the same partial pressure and temperature. The $n^{th}$ order rate equation (R=k $P^{g}$$_{asn}$) was modified to be R=k $P^{g}$$_{asn}$$P^{m}$$_{total}$ to describe the gasification rate where the total system pressure was changed. The gasification reaction rate of char-$CO_2$at high temperature and elevated pressure may be expressed as dX/dt=(174.1)exp(-71.5/RT)( $P_{CO2}$)0.40( $P_{total}$ )0.65(1-X)$^{2}$ 3/.X> 3/.
A series of wholly aromatic polyhyroxyamide (PHA) copolymers were prepared by direct polycondensation reaction of isophthalic acid and diacids containing bulky units with 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine. The inherent viscosities of the PHAs measured at 35℃ in DMAc solution were in the range of 0.31-0.56 dL/g. The solubility study revealed that the PHAs were readily soluble in aprotic solvents such as, dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) at room temperature and in less polar solvent such as pyridine. However, the polybenzoxazole (PBO) copoymers were quite insoluble in all organic solvents except partially soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid and partially soluble in NMP containing LiCl. The PBO copolymers showed maximum weight loss temperature in the range of 593-632℃ and high char yields in the range of 65.0-71.2% at 900℃ in a nitrogen atmosphere.

A pressurized wire mesh heating reactor (PWMR) can provide high pressure and temperature experimental conditions up to 50 atm and 1750 K, respectively. This equipment was developed to evaluate the intrinsic reaction kinetics of $CO_2$ gasification. A PWMR utilizes a platinum (Pt) wire mesh resistance to generate heat with a direct current (DC) electricity supply. This DC power supply can then be controlled by computer software to reach the exact expected terminal temperature and heating period. In this study, BERAU (sub-bituminous Indonesian coal) was pulverized then converted into char with a particle size of $90-150{\mu}m$. This was used in experiments with various pressures (1-40 atm) and temperatures (1373-1673 K) under atmospheric conditions. The internal and external effectiveness factor was analyzed to determine the effects of high pressure. The intrinsic reaction kinetics of BERAU char was obtained using $n^{th}$ order reaction rate equations. The value was determined to be 203.8kJ/mol.
To investigate the pyrolytic and anatomical characteristics of Korean softwood, Pinus densi-flora, Pinus rigida and Larix leptolepis, and hardwood, Acer palntatum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Quercus variabilis, chemical components analysis, TG-DTA (Thermogravimetric Analysis & Differential Thermal Analysis), MBA (Methylene Blue Adsorption) test and SEM observation were carried out. For TG-DTA, samples were carbonized up to $800^{\circ}C$ at the heating rate of $10^{\circ}C$/min under $N_2$ flows 1 l/min using thermogravimetric analyzer. Chemical component analysis of all samples resulted in typical contents of major wood component. In TG-DTA results, softwood showed higher char yield than hardwood, and lignin displayed the highest char yield among the major wood components. All samples showed typical TGA, DTG and DTA curves for wood pyrolysis except a few differences between softwood and hardwood. Content of lignin influenced its pyrolysis characteristics, while molecular structure of lignin affected not only the weight loss but also the yield of char. In MBA test results, MBA of softwoods was higher than that of hardwoods. Char of Pinus densiflora showed the highest MBA, but its degree was lower than activated carbon or fine charcoal about 23 and 4 times, respectively. SEM observation showed carbonization process preserves wood structure and retain the micro-structure of wood fibers.

We investigated the combustion rate and kinetic rate of char when burning in oxygen-enriched atmospheres with either an $N_2$ or $CO_2$ bath gas in a drop tube furnace. The experiments were performed with sub-bituminous coal (Adaro) and bituminous coal (Coal valley) under atmospheric pressure conditions. Two different coals were investigated over 12 to 30 vol% oxygen and furnace temperatures of 900, 1100, and $1300^{\circ}C$. For both coals, the particle temperature and overall reaction rate are lower in the $CO_2$ bath gas. However, analysis of single-particle data shows that the surface-specific burning rate of char oxidation is similar in both gases. In addition, the kinetic rate and activation energy for each coal were similar for both gases. Generally, the particle temperature and overall reaction rate of sub-bituminous coal are higher than those of bituminous coal.
Herein we studied the characterization of the PBO films formed via solution casting and thermal cyclization of poly(o-hyroxyamide)s(PHAs) that were synthesized by direct polycondensation of 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine with 4,4'-(2,3-quinoxalinedioxy) dibenzoic acid and/or 4,4'-(2,3-pyridinedioxy) dibenzoic acid. All the PHAs exhibited inherent viscosities in the range of 0.55~0.84 dL/g in DMAc solution. The copolymers, CPH-2-5, were partially soluble in less polar solvents like pyridine and THF. However, all the PBOs were not soluble in polar solvents, but only partially soluble in sulfuric acid. The temperatures corresponding to 10% weight loss of the PBOs with increasing content of quinoxalinedioxy unit were higher than those of the PHAs, and the char yields at $900^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$, tensile strength, and initial modulus of the PBOs were 1.1~1.3 times, 1.2~1.8, and 1.6~3.3 times higher, respectively, than those of the PHAs. The LOI value of CPB-2 was 38.5%, while that of CPB-1 was the highest at 40.0%. The LOI test confirmed that excellent flame retardants were synthesized.
Torrefaction is one of the methods to increase combustion calorific value and hydrophobicity of biomass. In this study, the effects of torrefaction on devolatilization, char reactivity and biomass structure were analyzed. Empty fruit bunch (EFB) and Kenaf biomass were used as fuels to be torrefied in the N2 environment at 200, 250 and $290^{\circ}C$. Devolatilization and char kinetics were analyzed by using TGA and biomass structure was investigated through petrography image. The reactivity showed different trends depending on the torrefaction temperature and biomass structure. The herbaceous biomass, Kenaf, was shown as high reactivity and thin wall structure. On the contrary, the woody biomass, EFB, had relatively low reactivity and thick wall structure.

Coal is the energy resource which is important with the new remarking energy resource. Coal combustion produces more NOx per unit of energy than any other major combustion technology. Pollutant emission associated with coal combustion will have a huge impact on the environment. Coal conversion has three processes which are drying, coal devolatilization and char oxidation. Coal devolatilization process is important because it has been shown that HCN which is converted from volatile N contributes 60 to 80% of the total NOx produced. This paper addresses mass release behavior of char, tar, gas and HCN in an experiment of Laminar Flow Reactor with two coals such as Roto middle coal (Sub-bituminous) and Anglo coal (Bituminous). The experiment is compared with the data predicted by CPD model for mass release of HCN about Roto south, Indominco, Weris creek and China orch coals. The results show that HCN increases as a function of decreasing the ratio of fixed carbon(FC)/ volatile matter(VM of the coals contain.)
Advancements in the technology of building materials has led to diverse applications of nanomaterials with the aim to monitor concrete structures. While there are myriad instances of the use of nanoparticles in building materials, the production of smart nano cement-composites is often expensive. Thereupon, this research aims to discover a sustainable nanomaterial from tyre waste using the pyrolysis process as part of the green manufacturing circle. Here, Nano Structure Tyre-Char (NSTC) is introduced as a zero-dimension carbon-based nanoparticle. The NSTC particles were characterized using various standard characterization techniques. Several salient results for the NSTC particles were obtained using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The size of the particles as well as that of the agglomerates were reduced significantly using the milling process and the results were validated through a scanning electron microscope. The crystallite size and crystallinity were found to be ~35nm and 10.42%, respectively. The direct bandgap value of 5.93eV and good optical conductivity at 786 nm were obtained from the ultra violet visible spectroscopy measurements. The thermal analysis reveals the presence of a substantial amount of carbon, the rate of maximum weight loss, and the two stages of phase transformation. The FT-Raman confirms the presence of carboxyl groups and a ID/IG ratio of 0.83. Water contact angle around 140° on the surface implies the highly hydrophobic nature of the material and its low surface energy. This characteristic process assists to obtain a sustainable nanomaterial from waste tyres, contributing to the development of a smart building material.
