This study analyzed the bed load transport and channel change on the vegetation zone through laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. To examine the effect of vegetation zone in the laboratory experiment, artificial vegetation zones made of acrylic sticks were installed in the experimental channel, and discharge conditions were adjusted to examine the bed load transport and channel change in the vegetation zone. Next, numerical simulations were performed by applying the same conditions as those of the laboratory experiment to the Nays2D model, a two-dimensional numerical model, and the applicability of the numerical model was examined by comparing the results with the results of the laboratory experiment. Finally, by applying a numerical model, the bed load transport and channel change according to the change in vegetation density were examined. As a result of examining the bed load transport and channel change in the vegetation zone according to the discharge condition change by applying the laboratory experiment and the numerical model, the results of the two application methods were similar. As the discharge increased, bed load from the upper stream was deposited inside the vegetation zone. On the other hand, on the other side of the vegetation zone, the flow was concentrated and erosion occurred. Also, the range of erosion increased in the downstream direction. As a result of examining the bed load transport and channel change according to the change in vegetation density, as the vegetation density increased, the bed load from the upper stream was deposited inside the vegetation zone. On the other hand, due to the increase in vegetation density, the flow was concentrated to the opposite side of the vegetation zone, erosion occurred.
An understanding of the hydraulic characteristics in the compound channel with vegetation is important in designing stream restorations or managing the floodplain. A laboratory flume of 16 m long and 0.8 m wide was used for analysis of the hydraulic characteristics in the single section channel and the compound channel with artificial vegetation. Slope of experimental channel is 0.5 %. Discharges are ranged from $0.2\;m^3/s\;to\;$0.4\;m^3/s$. The experiments were done by changing water depth ratio, vegetation density and vegetation location. When water depth ratio in the single section channel with vegetation increase up to 3.5, the results showed that the increment of water depth due to vegetation may be ignored in practice. The maximum increment of water depth was measured up to 6 % in the compound channel with vegetation and the range of velocities increment in the low flow channel was from 25 % to 85 % compared with section average velocities. As the vegetation densities increase and water depth ratios decrease, the velocity of the low flow channel increased. The range of roughness coefficients in the vegetated reaches were estimated from 0.055 to 0.14 in the single section channel and from 0.063 to 0.085 in the compound channel using HEC-RAS and RMA-2 model.
This study investigates the impact of riparian vegetation in the floodplain on channel stability, changes in bend curvature, and meandering channel migration. In channels with riparian vegetation, over time, meander width remains relatively constant, but selective bank erosion leads to meander development and downstream movement. During this process, bank erosion and changes in the riverbed are not significant, and the channel maintains relatively constant conditions with reduced sediment discharge and minimal variability. As the density of vegetation increases, bank erosion rates decrease. The erosion rates along the riverbanks increase with the density of vegetation on the floodplain, thus affecting the development of meanders. This factor notably contributes to enhancing riverbank stability and influencing channel changes through floodplain vegetation. Bank erosion rates and dimensionless bend curvature are greatest when there is no riparian vegetation but decrease in conditions with vegetation. Furthermore, the relationship between lateral migration rate and dimensionless bend curvature is similar to that of bank erosion rates. Therefore, riparian vegetation enhances channel stability, influencing bank erosion, meander curvature, and meander migration.

From a water-environmental point of view, with a change of understanding and concern about vegetation, it changes that vegetation acts as stability of channel and bed, providing habitats and feed for fauna, and means improving those with appreciation of the beautiful but resistant factor to the flow So, it becomes important concern and study subjects that turbulent structure by vegetation, shear stress and transport as well as roughness and average velocity by vegetation. But from a hydraulic point of view, vegetation causes resistance to the flow and can increase the risk of flooding, Therefore, this thesis concern the flow characteristics in vegetated open channels. According to the experimental results, $z_0$ was on an average $0.4h_p$ in a vegetated open channel. So, the elevation corresponding to zero velocity in a vegetated channel was the middle of roughness element. The limit for logarithmically distributed profile over the roughness element was from $z_0$ to $0.80h_{over}$ for a vegetated channel. Among the existing theory, the method of Kouwen et al.(1969), Haber(1982), and El-Hakim and Salama(1992) except Stephan(2001) gave a very good value compared to the measured velocity profile.
In this study, the numerical simulation regarding the process and characteristics of topography change due to the vegetation recruitment and growth was carried out by adding the vegetation growth model to two-dimensional flow and sediment transport models. The vegetation introduction and recruitment on the condition for developing an alternate bar reduced the bar migration. The vegetated area and channel width changes were more significantly influenced by changes in upstream discharge rather than the duration of low flow. When the upstream discharge decreased, the vegetation area increased and the channel width decreased. The vegetation introduction and recruitment on the condition for developing a braided channel significantly influenced the characteristics of topography changes. In the braided channel, vegetation reduced the braided index, and when the upstream discharge decreased significantly, the channel topography was changed from the braided channel to the single channel. The vegetation area decreased as the upstream discharge increased. The channel width decreased significantly after the vegetation was introduced and it also decreased as the upstream discharge decreased. It was confirmed through the numerical simulation that a decrease in flood discharge accelerated the vegetation introduction and recruitment in the channel and this allowed to confirm its influence on the characteristics of topography changes qualitatively.
The open-channel flow with submerged vegetation shows distinct features in two separate regions, namely upper and vegetation layers. In the upper layer, the flow is akin to the open-channel flow, while the flow in the vegetation layer is relatively uniform with suppressed turbulence due to vegetation stems. This paper presents laboratory experiments to investigate the characteristics of turbulent flows and suspended sediment transport in open-channel flows with submerged vegetation. An open-channel facility, 0.5 m wide and 12 m long, was used for laboratory experiments. Various discharges were employed with depth ratios of 2~3, and wooden cylinders were used for vegetation. To make equilibrium suspension, sediment particles of median diameter of 75 ${\mu}M$ were fed until capacity condition. Laser Doppler velocimeter was used to measure instantaneous velocity, and direct sampling with vinyl tube was used to measure the concentration of suspended sediment. Using the sampled data, the mean flow and turbulence structures were provided and characteristics of suspended sediment concentration with Rouse number were presented.

Urban streams have, recently, been straightened and widened to alleviate flooding problem. As a result, the stream have been modified inadvertently for ecological functions and microtopography. In this study, we investigated riparian vegetation and microtopography of the tributaries of Han River before and after the monsoon rain in summer. The purpose of this study was to relate the stream microtopography to the distribution of riparian vegetation. The stream microtopography was investigated for its scale and pattern. Vegetation was investigated from 131 plots by Braun-Blanquet method. The distribution of riparian vegetation was significantly correlated with the stream microtopography. Various herbaceous species occurred at stream bank slop, high terrace and channel side. However, at channel side and concave part of terrace where soils were in high moisture level, only a few wetland species were dominated. The complexity of the microtopography in the stream corridors led to heterogeneous riparian vegetation. The vegetation showed more stability against flooding at the stream corridors with natural and complex microtopography than at the urban-type stream corridors with simple topographical features. The results showed that the development of riparian vegetation was influenced by the changes in microtopography, which was primarily determined by the shape and characteristics of channel. It seemed that a close-to-nature river system would be restored more readily with an understanding of microtopographical features affecting the distribution of riparian vegetation.

A hydro-geomorphologic change in a sand bed channel reach and vegetation expansion by changes in the How regime is analyzed in this study. Field and aerial photo surveys, basic hydrological analysis about flow regime change due to two dams, Andong Dam and Imha Dam, on the upstream river and computer modeling are conducted. Two Dams in the study reach have obviously affected downstream channel in many ways including the bed particle coarsening, vegetation expansion on the sandbars and following river channel braiding. The phenomenon of no vegetation on the large point bar in front of Hahwe Village seems due to disturbance of the sandbar surface probably due to the cross flow in the meander reach during the flood. Another reason for no vegetation is that the sandbar on this reach has lower subsurface water lovels, as compared with the others in the up- and downstream of the reach where vegetation expanded, which would hinder vegetation from germinating and growing on the sandbar.
This paper presents the state of the art of the CFD applications to vegetated open-channel flows. First, important aspects of the physics of vegetated flows found through the laboratory experiments are briefly reviewed. Then, previous CFD applications to one-dimensional vertical structure, partly-vegetated flows, compound open-channel flows with floodplain vegetation, and fully three-dimensional numerical simulations are reviewed. Finally, topics for further researches such as relationship between the resistance and flexural rigidity, additional drag due to foliages, and melting the experience of CFD with the depth-averaged modeling, are suggested.
Soil erosion from agricultural fields leads to various environmental problems weakening the capabilities of flood control and ecosystem in water bodies. Regarding these problems, Ministry of Environment of South-Korea prepared various structural and non-structural best management practices (BMPs) to control soil erosion. However, a lot of efforts are required to monitor and develop BMPs. Thus, modeling techniques have been developed and utilized for these issues. This study estimated the effectiveness of BMPs which are a vegetation mat with infiltration roll and Roll type vegetation channel using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model through the adjustment of the conservation practice factors, P factors, for Universal Soil Loss Equation which were calculated by monitoring data collected at the segment plots. Each BMP was applied to the areas with slopes ranged from 7% to 13% in the Haeanmyeon watershed. As a result of simulation, the vegetation mat with infiltration roll and Roll type vegetation channel showed 55% and 59% efficiency of soil erosion reduction, respectively. Also, Vegetation mat with infiltration roll and Roll type vegetation channel showed each 11.2% and 11.8% efficiency in reduction of sediment discharge. These roll type vegetation channel showed greater efficiency of soil erosion reduction and sediment discharge. Based on these results, if roll type vegetation channel is widely used in agricultural fields, reduction of soil erosion and sediment discharge of greater efficiency would be expected.
