Enhanced Expression of Plasma Glutathione Peroxidase in the Thymus of Mice Treated with TCDD and Its Implication for TCDD-induced Thymic Atrophy

  • The potent environmental contaminant, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), induces thymus atrophy in experimental animals. However, its mechanism of action is not fully understood. To gain insight into its immunosuppressive effect, Balb/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with TCDD ($30{\mu}g/kg$ body weight) and genes regulated by TCDD were identified using cDNA arrays [Park and Lee (2002)]. One of the regulated genes was that for plasma glutathione peroxidase (pGPx). Upon TCDD injection, pGPx mRNA levels in the thymus increased, in parallel with increases in GPx activity and the frequency of anti-human pGPx antibody-reactive cells. pGPX mRNA levels were also moderately up-regulated in the testis and spleen. This is the first report that a particular isotype of the glutathione peroxidase family is regulated by TCDD at both mRNA and protein levels. pGPx is expressed in various tissues in contact with body fluids, and detoxifies hydrogen peroxides and lipid hydroperoxides. It will be of interest to assess the role of pGPx in TCDD-induced thymic atrophy.

The Characteristics and Flora of Changwon and Nam Stream Located in Gyeongsangnam-do (경상남도 창원천과 남천의 관속식물상과 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is carried out to present the raw data for restoring and maintaining an urban stream by objective surveying and analysing about flora in Changwon stream and Nam stream, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. The results are as follows. The numbers of vascular plants were summarized as 248 taxa; 71 families, 184 genera, 220 species, 26 varieties and 2 forma. The numbers of vascular plants by streams were 202 taxa in Changwon stream and 206 taxa in Nam stream. The endemic plant was Salix pseudolasiogyne. The rare plants designated by Korea Foret Service were 2 taxa; Aristolochia contorta and Koelreuteria paniculata. The specific plants by floristic region were 12 taxa; Aphananthe aspera, Artemisia selengensis, Indigofera pseudotinctoria and so forth. The naturalized plants were 37 taxa; Ailanthus altissima, Amaranthus patulus, Amorpha fruticosa and so forth. The invasive alien plants designated by Ministry of Environment were 4 taxa; Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior, Aster pilosus, Rumex acetocella and Solanum carolinense. The UI (Urbanized Index) and NI (Naturalized Index) were 13.6% and 18.3% in Changwon stream and 13.6% and 17.9% in Nam stream.

  • At present, with the development of precision instruments, high dimensional accuracy of workpieces must be ensured. In particular, for the aluminum alloys used in automobiles, the surface roughness of the workpiece is extremely important. The dimensional accuracy and surface roughness of the workpiece is considerably affected by the rotational accuracy of the rotor. Therefore, to enhance the rotational accuracy, various variables such as those related to the components such as bearings, motors, and end mills, rotational speeds, and vibrations must be considered. In this study, the difference in the quality of the workpieces was compared considering the weight imbalance and rotational speed as variables.

  • Recently, research on applying composite materials to various industrial fields is being actively conducted. In particular, composite materials fabricated by Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printers have more advantages than existing materials as they have fewer restrictions on manufacturing shape, reduce the time required, weight. With these advantages, it is possible to consider utilizing composite materials in cryogenic environments such as the application of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, which are mainly used in an aerospace and mobility. However, FDM composite materials are not verified in cryogenic environments less than 150K. This study evaluates the characteristics of composite materials such as tensile strength and strain using a UTM (Universal Testing Machine). The specimen is immersed in liquid nitrogen (77 K) to cool down during the test. The specimen is fabricated using 3D print, and can be manufactured by stacking reinforced fibers such as carbon fiber, fiber glass, and aramid fiber (Kevlar) with base material (Onyx). For the experimental method and specimen shape, international standards ASTM D638 and ASTM D3039 for tensile testing of composite materials were referenced.

  • Protein glycosylation is a common post-translational modification by non-template-based biosynthesis. In fungal biotechnology, which has great applications in pharmaceuticals and industries, the importance of research on fungal glycoproteins and glycans is accelerating. In particular, the importance of quantitative analysis of fungal glycans is emerging in research on the production of filamentous fungal proteins by genetic modification. Reliable mass spectrometry-based techniques for quantitative glycomics have evolved into chemical, enzymatic, and metabolic stable isotope labeling methods. In this study, we intend to expand quantitative glycomics by metabolic isotope labeling of glycans in Aspergillus niger, a filamentous fungus model, by the MILPIG method. We demonstrate that incubation of filamentous fungi in a culture medium with carbon-13 labeled glucose (1-13C1) efficiently incorporates carbon-13 into N-linked glycans. In addition, for quantitative validation of this method, light and heavy glycans are mixed 1:1 to show the performance of quantitative analysis of various N-linked glycans simultaneously. We have successfully quantified fungal glycans by MILPIG and expect it to be widely applicable to glycan expression levels under various biological conditions in fungi.

  • 본 논문에서는 매입형 영구자석 전동기(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor)의 회전자 형상에 따른 철손의 변화를 고찰하였다. 철손 계산은 철손 수식의 계수들을 Curve Fitting Method (CFM)를 통하여 산정하였고, 자속밀도는 고정자의 자계 거동 및 고조파 분석을 통하여 계산하였다.

  • 전동기 제어 시스템에서 전동기 상수의 추정은 전기적 상수의 추정과 기계적 상수의 추정을 목적으로 하는 두 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 전기적 상수의 경우 실험과 측정기를 통해 비교적 정확히 추정할 수 있으며 기계적 상수의 경우 실험을 통해서 측정이 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 DSP를 사용하여 기계정수를 추정하고 추정된 값을 사용하여 시뮬레이션을 제작하며 시뮬레이션과 실제 전동기를 비교함으로써 추정법의 성능을 시험한다.
