  • As a traditional agricultural society changes into an industrial society due to an industrialization policy since the 1960's, there is a tendency of decrease in population and being old in a rural area. Also there has been a remarkable decrease in the rate of large family and families of over three generations as a family type changes from a large family system to a nuclear family one. According to resent studies, the rate of families of the old over 65 in a dong area is 17.0%, While that in eup and myon areas is 35.3% This shows the rural exodus of the young caused by urbanization. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze consciousness of residence by studying satisfaction of each room of a house by type of living-together in a rural area. On the basis of this, to provide data for planning various residential environment by change of type of living-together in a rural area.

  • In contrast to apartments, detached houses offer the possibility of more than one entrance connecting interior and exterior spaces. This study examines the location, function, and use of second doors in detached houses in rural areas. The study employs survey and interviews conducted in 2015, focusing on 18 detached houses among 40 houses previously surveyed in 1995. In 1995, 21 second doors were found, while in 2015, 19 were found. The study led to the following conclusions. First, most houses did have second doors installed by 1995 or 2015. Second doors tended to be installed in kitchen and utility rooms. The function of second doors was most closely connected to the kitchen because utility rooms were placed adjacent to kitchens. Secondly, changes in the use and number of second doors were changes in family life cycle and composition, the need for new equipment facilities, the use of new architectural materials, and the installation of new second doors for extension of space. Finally, exterior spaces accessed by second doors tend to be a meeting of semi-interior or semi-exterior space and exterior space only. Those spaces tended to be designed for kitchen fixtures or to support kitchen activities.

  • The purpose of the present study is to provide policy implications for successful development of the metropolitan economic zone in Korea followed by in-depth case studies on the US Metropolitan Economic Region. This study looked into diverse experiences of the US mega regions investigating their key strategies, requirements and standards, etc. Urban areas in the US are designated based on CBSA, a standard for statistical area since 1950. The US has a clear standard to define rural and suburban area and is trying to reflect urban structural changes including suburbanization. The US annexation system is relatively simple to operate. Furthermore, the system helps the growth of rural areas by gradually incorporating rural areas into urban areas. We found that action plans of the US mega regions facilitate strategic growth and development for balanced territorial development, incorporating multi-dimensional and comprehensive approaches. We also found that the US mega regions are designated with regard to the local natures. Couple of policy implications were extracted from the US experiences. First, since the construction of mega regions in Korea concerns less on the inter-regional connections with other regions, we need to incorporate diverse standards to divide the regions with respect to the spatial and local characteristics. Second, local governments should collaborate with each other for successful economic development of the metropolitan economic zones. Administrative districts renovation can be a immediate and effective solution to facilitate the collaboration. We recommended to consider consolidating administrative areas to construct successful metropolitan economic zones.

  • Socioeconomic status in this county progressed rapidly, this has brought about many changes in health care fields, namely, pattern of disease prevalence and morbidity, increase of the aged people, and also availability of health care in rural areas. According to the utilization study of medical care, it showed that the oriental medicine is used for the treatment of lasted chronic disease not the minor and common diseases which is quick in its effect. Particularly, in rural areas. prevalence of chronic disease is higher than that in urban areas. Although the health cafe need of the oriental medicine is high in rural areas, the distribution of manpower and facilities is lower than that in urban areas. Therefore the government has planned to implement the demonstration project for the oriental medicine at the designated 3 health centers in rural areas. The purpose of this study was to collect the utilization level of oriental medical care of the people in rural areas. • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the 11 southeastern states in the United States by using regional characteristics variables and to classify the regions. First, 19 variables from four categories of population, society, industry-economy and urban service were selected and factor analysis were conducted, and the result showed five major factors of population, economic condition, job and commuting. Based on the following factor scores, a cluster analysis was conducted, and eight types of big city, medium-sized city, bed town, small town, urban hinterland, retirement town, and rural village were derived. These types of spatial distribution characteristics showed big cities were by different types of regions and they formed metropolitan areas. Each types of classified regions were located along the road network with hierarchy. The study focused on cases in the southeastern regions of the United States and can be used as a comparison with Korean cases. If the same research method is applied to Korea in the future, or if the time series of changes is tracked by analyzing different time points, it will greatly help identify the characteristics of urban and rural mixed areas.

  • The recently built rural Hanoks have shown changes in appearances regarding its shape, space and size in the traditional floor plan. This is probably the transformation process to suit the needs of modern residence as new spaces and other factors are considered these days. The purpose of the research is to provide basic data for the innovation and construction of future Hankoks by analyzing the size features of the Hanoks in the rural areas of Jeeollanam-do and changing trends. They were divided into 5 types depending on the shape and the spacing of the living room and kitchen. Then size features per each type were analyzed. From this, it was revealed that there needs to be reasonable development of types in the standard design of Hanok because the size of the rooms is actually bigger than the standard design of Hanok in Jeollanam-do. The composition of the utility rooms should be classified as either domestic space or agricultural workspace considering that this area is rural but there are not enough storage spaces for agricultural machines and materials in most houses as they did not install external storage spaces. Therefore, it was analyzed that the size varies with the changes in the composition of space because of Hankok's similarities in the area of the rooms with typical apartments.

  • Since 1970s, rapid industrialization brought urbanization nationwide. In this paper, precipitation changes have been studied for Seoul and other 6 major cities using 31 years of precipitation data from 1973 to 2003. In addition, to consider the other global climatic impacts including El Nino events, precipitation change comparisons have been made between urban and rural areas. Thus, statistical analysis methods have been adopted for annual precipitation, summer precipitation, 1 hour annual maxima series, and 24 hour annual maxima series for both urban and rural areas. The result yields that annual and summer precipitation have been increased in urban areas compare to rural areas.

  • Hwangdun is a remote rural village in Korea, located in the montane central part of the nation. In the early of 2000, the provincial government of Kangwon-do designated Hwangdun as a model E-village. The village was connected to the national information backbone network, and 100 personal computers and 66 Internet TVs were distributed among the villagers for free of charge. The village center too was turned to a ‘tele-cottage’harnessed with PCs, a kiosk and peripheral devices. The Hwangdun E-village, being the first case of its kind in Korea, has drawn much attention nationwide, and has triggered similar informatization investments in a number of rural areas. The present study conducted a survey in the early of 2001 to examine what the E-village Project has meant for the people in Hwangdun. In particular, the survey focused on the characteristics of the households having computers and of the computer users, the ways in which people use their computers, the kinds of problems and difficulties the users have faced, and the changes of Hwangdun after the introduction of computers to the village. This paper describes the major findings of the study and discusses the research and policy implications of those findings.
