  • Two synthetic pathways to substituted hexahydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines, which may serve as precursors of aza-alkaloids, were investigated. The first involves the condensation of a bisnucleophilic enediaminoester and a biselectrophile. The second involves attachment to nitrogen of the carbon chain skeleton required to form the six-memberd ring, before formation of the enediaminoester. Several substituted hexahydroimidazo[1,2- a]pyridines were synthesized via these two approaches.

  • The polarizability and the transition state energy of a cephalosporin are assumed to be theoretical indices of the permeability through the outer membrane and of reactivity of ${\beta}$ -lactam ring with penicillin binding proteins, respectively, in Gram-negative bacteria. They are computed by AM1 method and used as variables of quantitative structure-activity relationship study. The results justify quadratic dependence of the activity on the variables. The intersection of difference volumes between $\beta-lactamase$ stable cephalosporins and unstable ones manifests that the steric hindrance of 7-side chain is responsible for the ${\beta}$ -lactamase stability.

  • Four steroids including two novel compounds have been isolated from a sponge of the genus Tethya. All of the compounds possess a 5α,8α-epidioxy functionality as a common structural feature. Two new steroids, 1 and 2, possess a cyclopropyl ring at C-24(26) of the side chain. The structures of these compounds have been determined by combined spectroscopic methods.

  • In near-ring theory several different types of primitivity exist. These all imply several different types of primeness. In case of near-rings with DCCN most of the types of primeness are known to imply primitivity of a certain kind. We are able to show that also so called 1-prime near-rings imply 1-primitivity. This enables us to classify maximal ideals in near-rings with chain condition with the concept of 1-primeness which leads to further results in the structure theory of near-rings.

  • Let R be a commutative ring with identity and let M be a w-module over R. Denote by ℱM the set of all w-submodules of M such that (M/N)w is w-cofinitely generated. Then it is shown that M is w-Artinian if and only if ℱM is closed under arbitrary intersections, if and only if ℱM satisfies the descending chain condition.

  • A series of new aromatic polyhydroxyamides (PHAs) containing imide ring were prepared by direct polycondensation reaction of imide-diacids and two types of bis(o-aminophenol)s including 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine and 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane. The polymers were characterized by FT-IR, FT-NMR, DSC and TGA. The inherent viscosities of the PHAs measured at $35^{\circ}C$ in DMAC solution were in the range of 0.49-1.13 dL/g. PHA 2 and 3, except PHA 1, were soluble in polar solvents such as DMAc, DMF and NMP. PHA 4, 5, and 6 containing 6F group showed a higher solubility in less polar solvents. But the polybenzoxazoles (PBOs,) were insoluble in a variety of solvents except partially soluble in sulfuric acid. The PBO 1, 2 and 3 showed maximum weight loss temperature in the range of $650-656^{\circ}C$ and relatively high char yields in the range of 57.4-61.9 % under a nitrogen atmosphere. These results suggested that the introduction of imide or diimide ring in the main chain was effective in improving the thermal stability of PHAs and PBOs.

  • Dipyridine-terminated polystyrenes and polybutadienes were synthesized by the chain endfunctionalization reaction of polystyryllithium (PSLi) and polybutadienyllithium (PBDLi) with di(2-pyridyl) ketone(DPK) using a living anionic polymerization method in the Ar-glove box. Living polymeric lithiums with low molecular weights (Mw=1000~2000 g/mol) were used to investigate the chain end-functionalization yield with DPK and the degree of coupling reaction by the attack of organolithium to the pyridine ring in the presence of TMEDA using GPC, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$ analysis. DPK-terminated PBD exhibited much higher functionalization yield and less amount of coupling reaction compared with DPK-terminated PS. 86% functionalization yield with 9% degree of coupling was obtained when the PBDLi was added dropwise to DPK solution at room temperature. The functionalization yield was increased as the reaction temperature decreased, however, no LiCl effect was observed in this chain end-functionalization reaction with DPK.

  • Ginseng has long been used as a traditional medicine in Asian countries including Korea and China. In recent years, it has been reported that the biological activities of ginseng are due to its active components, ginsenosides. Ginsenosides are represented by triterpenes of the dammarane type. Ginsenoside Re consists of two glucose rings, one rhamnose ring, and the triterpene ring. In the present study ginsenoside Re has been isolated from the Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) and the tertiary structure has been determined using NMR spectroscopy. Flexibilities around each linkages described by seven torsion angles were considered. The structures of ginsenoside Re obtained by NMR spectroscopy show the rigidity around the glucopyranosyl ring II and alkene side chain. The dihedral angles of φ5, φ6, φ7 are about 150o, 50o and 45o, respectively. In addition, flexibility exists around rhamnopyranosyl and glucopyronosyl moiety. The linkage around the rhamnopyranosyl and glucopyranosyl ring I, are divided into three groups. This flexibility seems to play important role in regulation of the hydrophobic surface exposed to the solvent. Because of the growing need for the structural determination of ginsenoside, this result can help to understand their well-accepted pharmacological effects of ginsenoside Re.

  • Two diastereoisomers of cyclo(Pro-Tyr) have been synthesized simultaneously. The crystal structures and conformations of both cyclo($\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr) and a racemic mixture of cyclo($\small{D}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr) and cyclo($\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{D}$-Tyr), abbreviated as rac-cyclo($\small{D}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr/$\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{D}$-Tyr), have been determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study at low temperature. The crystals of rac-cyclo($\small{D}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr/$\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{D}$-Tyr) belong to orthorhombic space group $Pna2_1$ with a = 10.755 (1), b = 12.699 (1), c = 9.600 (1) ${\AA}$ and Z = 4. The tyrosine side chain is folded towards the diketopiperazine (DKP) ring. The DKP ring adopts a twist boat conformation with pseudo symmetry $C_{2v}$. The pyrrolidine ring has an envelope conformation with the N5, C4, C7 and C8 atoms in a plane. The crystal of rac-cyclo($\small{D}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr/$\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{D}$-Tyr) is stabilized by hydrogen bonds between amide N2-H2 and carbonyl oxygen O2 in the neighbor. The hydroxyl group of tyrosine residue is also hydrogen bonded to the oxygen of the carbonyl group of the DKP ring in the next molecule. The spectroscopic properties of both isomers are also described.
