In this report, a total domestic demand for major commercial fertilizer for crop production in Korea up to 1996 was estimated. The agricultural products and area for demand for both 1982 and 1986 was quoted from the estimate of the 5th Five-year Economic plan. And the demands estimated for 1991 and 1996 reflected possible changes of diet from cereal to meat and their indirect effects on the increase of cereal consumption. As the advanced countries followed, consequently, the demands for soybean, corn and other feed grains were expected to be increased as well as the land for growing those crops. 1. Total annual demands for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers were estimated 1,050,000M/T, 1,110,000M/T, 1,280,000M/T and 1,010,000M/T for the year 1982, 1986, 1991, and 1996 respectively. 2. It was assumed that there would be difficulties in self-sufficiency of grains at the cost of the maximum utilization of land and fertilizers in 1996. 3. It was clear that the increase of the productivity per unit area is possible by improving the conditions of arable land which could resulted a self-sufficiency of food in Korea. As a consequence, the demand for fertilizers at that time would exceed the level of estimates. 4. The recent decrease in demand for commercial fertilizers (currently estimated 850,000M/T) was due to an inadequate application of fertilizers for respective crop reqirement. This inadequacy should be checked and encouraged the consumptions of fertilizers to be increased by supporting the price of grain.
In the present study, optimization on ${\beta}$-glucanase-assisted extraction was made in order to isolate waxy barley starch from domestic cultivar using the D-optimal design suitable for response surface methodology (RSM). The results demonstrated that the amount of enzyme was found to be a major influencing factor on the extraction yield, which was substantially increased by increasing the amount of enzyme. It was also influenced by the reaction time and amount of water addition; however, the two factors were less influential than the amount of enzyme. The optimized condition by RSM for the reaction time was found to be 2.63 hours and amount of enzyme 1.7%, and amount of water addition 4.38 times the weight of raw material. With the enzyme treatment, the starch content in residues (R), particularly in R1 and R5, was reduced considerably, resulting in an increase in the extraction yield and therefore primarily and effectively releasing B-type starch small granule confirmed by scanning electronic microscopy. In addition, the study determined the physicochemical properties of isolated waxy starch (i.e., purity, water adsorption capacity, thermal properties, rheology and starch morphology) and compared them with those from the enzyme-not treated sample. It was found that they were almost similar to each other, except for the purity of starch, which was lower in the enzyme-treated sample than in the enzyme-not treated one.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of heat treatment and germination on tricin and tricin 4'-O-(threo-${\beta}$-guaiacylglyceryl) ether (TTGE) formation from rice hull (Oryza sativa L.). Heat treatments were conducted at $80{\sim}140^{\circ}C$ for 1~5 h. Germination periods were 1~6 days at $37^{\circ}C$. Germinated rough rice extracts were classified as non-filtrated, filtrated, and residue after filtration. For heat treatment, the highest contents of tricin and TTGE were 253.12 and $208.39{\mu}g/g$ at $130^{\circ}C$ after 1 h, respectively. For germination, the highest contents of tricin and TTGE in rice hull were 118.20 and $95.37{\mu}g/g$ after 2 days, respectively. In the germinated rough rice extract treatment, the highest contents of tricin and TTGE were 361.76 and $308.08{\mu}g/g$, respectively, in residue after filtration of germinated rice extract for 6 days. Therefore, the optimum conditions for tricin and TTGE formation were heat treatment at $130^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, germination for 2 days, and addition of residue after filtration of germinated rough rice extract for 6 days.

In order to investigate the quality characteristics of powdered teas using Compositae species flower, the samples of Chrysanthemum indicum L. (CI), Chrysanthemum boreale Makino (CB), and Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum (Maxim.) Kitam (CZ) were extracted with hot water and concentrated, and then mixed with different forming agents of dextrin (D) and maltodextrin (MD). The mixing ratio of D and MD was ranged from 9:1 (DMD91) to 8:2 (DMD82) or D and MD only. The solubility of the powdered tea was higher in added dextrin. The highest total polyphenol and flavonoid content of the powdered tea were 6.75 and 3.24 mg/g at CBDMD91, respectively. Total antioxidant activities of C. indicum, C. boreale, and C. zawadskii powdered tea ranged at $2.51{\sim}2.63$, $4.37{\sim}4.50$, and $3.44{\sim}3.55\;mg$ AA eq/g, respectively. In sensory evaluation, the C. indicum and C. zawadskii powdered teas obtained higher sensory score of all evaluation items than C. boreale powdered tea. The optimal mixing ratio at 36% of D and 4% of MD in forming agent was selected to enhance the sensory characteristics and antioxidant activities of powdered tea.

Barley is an important cereal gain which is traditionally used in some nations of Asia and North Africa, and there has been growing interest in using barley as an ingredient in food due to their nutritional value and high content of phyto-constituents. However, no study report on comparative feed value between sprouted barley, cornflake and alfalfa hay. Therefore, in this study we aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, amino acid profile and mineral content of 6 day sprouted barley fodder (SBF) compared with cornflake and alfalfa hay using by AOAC method, as an alternative feed ingredient. Results showed that SBF had higher content of crude protein, acid detergent insoluble crude proteins and neutral detergent insoluble crude protein than alfalfa hay and cornflake; cornflake had higher crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber content than SBF and alfalfa hay; alfalfa hay had higher crude fiber, crude ash, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber and lignin level than SBF and cornflake. Also, significant differences were found on amino acid content among them (p<0.01). The most abundant amino acid in SBF was glutamate (123 g/kg DM), which is higher than in alfalfa hay (1.27%) or cornflake (1.58%). However, methionine (1.33%) and cysteine (1.53%) were the least abundant amino acids in SBF compared with cornflake or alfalfa hay. Furthermore, our study results exhibited that SBE comprise a good sources of minerals including ferrous (90.01 mg/kg) followed by zinc (20.50 mg/kg), magnesium (0.20 mg/kg) and sodium (0.03 mg/kg) as compared to cornflake and alfalfa hay. The present research findings, confirmed that the nutritional values of SBF are comparable to those of cornflake and alfalfa hay. Hence, SBF can be a better alternative feed ingredient for cornflake or alfalfa hay. However, feeding trials will be required to determine acceptability of SBF for ruminant production.
Green manure cultivation affects soil productivity and nutrient conservation in paddy soil at winter season. This study was to evaluate nitrogen behavior released from chinese milk vetch (CMV) as green manure by using stable $^{15}N$ trace during rice cultivation. The CMV used in the experiment was 29.9 of C/N ratio and 14.1 g N $kg^{-1}$ ($^{15}N$ 0.388 atom % excess) and was applied at rates of 10 and $30Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in pot of 1/2000a size. Rice growth and N uptake increased with higher levels of CMV application at harvesting stage. Among total N uptake, 14.6 and 26.8 % of nitrogen was released respectively from the two different rates of CMV application. Stable $^{15}N$ recovery by rice biomass was 60%, 54% to the $^{15}N$ input, respectively, of CMV application, which decreased in order of grain, root, and straw of rice biomass. Total N content in the soil after rice harvest was 1.9 and 2.1 g N $kg^{-1}$, respectively, with increasing N input by the different rates of CMV application and the rate of $^{15}N$ recovery derived from CMV in the soil was 3.8 and 4.8 %, respectively. N input by CMV application induced rice growth and productivity during rice cultivation. However, it might need proper managements to reduce N loss because about 36-41 % of nitrogen was lost from N input by CMV application.
The effect of planting densities on the growth of $Sedum$$samentosum$ (4 collections) was investigated using nutrient film technique (NFT) with Yamazaki' lettuce nutrient solution (1982) from September 5th to October 24th in non-heating plastic film house. At 40 days, the plant height of 4 collections showed the range of 15.0-18.9 cm, and mean plant height was high the order of $10{\times}10$, $2.5{\times}2.5$, and $5{\times}5cm$. The growth of 'Pohang' and 'Wando' collections was better compared to that of 'Gunsan' and 'Wanju' collections. Number of node, stem diameter, and fresh and dry weight per plant were decreased in higher planting density. Despite the lower fresh weight per plant obtained, the fresh yield per $m^2$ was significantly increased in higher planting density. The mean fresh yield was $14.9kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in $2.5{\times}2.5cm$, and 'Pohang' collection showed the highest fresh yield ($17.6kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$). The first optimized harvesting time base on plant height was 30-40 days after NFT culture during autumn season. In eating quality, compression force of stem and bitterness of shoot were decreased in higher planting density. However, the heavy labor demanding high density cutting needs to be improved for hydroponic culture of $S.$$samentosum$.
The cereal grain crops have strong flexibility against adverse environment and they have various functional compounds. The objective of the present study was to screen phenolic compounds in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], foxtail millet (Setaria italica), common millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array (PDA) detector. Sorghum contained the highest amount of phenolic compounds among three different crops (sorghum, foxtail millet, common millet). Especially Moktaksusu showed the highest amount of phenolic compounds concentrations and biggest regional differences. The comparison of average phenolic compounds in sorghums by regions showed order to Milyang ($963.3\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Yeongyang ($923.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($831.3\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and Bonghwa ($735.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$). Among the sorghum cultivars, Moktaksusu ($1407.9\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) had the highest concentration of phenolic compounds. The average phenolic compounds of foxtail millets showed similar amount among Milyang ($319.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($288.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and Bonghwa ($281.9\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) areas. The phenolic compounds of Yeongyang ($246.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) slightly low and that showed similar concentrations among three different regions. The concentration of phenolic compounds in foxtail millets, Chungchajo ($335.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) showed the highest concentrations. The average phenolic compounds of common millets showed the highest concentrations in Milyang ($305.5\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Bonghwa ($262.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($195.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Yeongyang ($237.2\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) in decreasing order. The concentration of phenolic compounds of common millets was the highest in the Norangchalgijang ($337.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Hwanggumgijang ($250.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) was also relatively higher than others. The results of this study will provide basic information for breeding sorghums, foxtail millets and common millets with higher phenolic compound concentrations.

This study investigated changes in physicochemical characteristics of barely powder produced from different cultivars (Dahan, Hinchalssal, Heugkwang, Heugnurl and Boseokchal) and with different degrees (15, 19, 23, and 27%) of milling. Crude protein content increased with decreasing milling degrees, with content ranges of 7.38-10.09, 8.01-10.58, 9.47-11.62, and 9.03-12.08%, respectively. Further crude lipid and ash content increased with decreasing milling degree. The crude lipid content was highest in Dahan-milled barley, while crude ash content was highest in Hinchalssal-milled barley. As the milling degree decreased, palmitic and stearic acid composition decreased and oleic and linoleic acid composition increased. Major minerals present in the barley powder were Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, and Zn. K and Mg content increased with decreasing milling degree. These results indicate that further studies are needed to optimize the cultivar usage and degree of milling for manufacture of various barley products.

This study was conducted to isolate and identify a microorganism that increases tricin-O-(threo-${\beta}$-guaiacylglyceryl) ether (TTGE) content in the hulls of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Bacteria from germinated rice were isolated by enrichment cultivation using yeast mold, luria bertani, potato dextrose and mannitol egg york polymyxin broths. The highest increase in TTGE content ($339.30{\mu}g/g$) was achieved by a microorganism isolated by PDA enrichment cultivation. On the basis of 16S RNA sequence homology and phylogenetic analysis, the isolated bacterium was identified to have 100% similarity with Burkholderia vietnamiensis. The isolated bacteria were short rods, negative for the Gram stain, and positive for the catalase test. The highest TTGE level was $435.86{\mu}g/g$ in 72-h fermented samples, representing a 2.5x increase compared with the control ($175.65{\mu}g/g$). In conclusion, the bacterium isolated from germinated rice extract was Burkholderia vietnamiensis, and the optimum fermentation period to maximize TTGE levels was 72 h. These findings might help in developing functional materials using rice hulls, a waste product of rice milling.
