  • Porous $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membranes were successfully prepared by dry-wet spinning/sintering method. The SEM image shows that the $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membrane consists mostly of sponge pore structure. The contact angle and the breakthrough pressure were $126^{\circ}$ and 1.91 bar, respectively. This results indicate that the $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membranes were successfully modified to hydrophobic surface. The hydrophobic modified $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membranes were assembled into a membrane contactor system to separate $CO_2$ from a model gas mixture of the flue gas at elevated gas velocity. The $CO_2$ absorption flux was enhanced when the gas velocity increased from $1{\times}10^{-3}$ to $6{\times}10^{-3}$ m/s. Whereas the $CO_2$ absorption flux was decreased with the number of hollow fiber membrane of a module because of the concentration polarization. Furthermore, we developed an lab-scale $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membrane contactor modules and their system (i.e., $CO_2$ absorption using the $Al_2O_3$ membrane and monoethanolamine (MEA)) that could dispose of over $0.02Nm^3/h$ mixture gas (15% $CO_2$) with the removal efficiency higher than 95%. The results can be useful in a field of the membrane contactor for $CO_2$ separation, helping to design and extend a equipment.

  • SiC hollow fiber was fabricated by curing, dissolution and sintering of Al-PCS fiber, which was melt spun the polyaluminocarbosilane. Al-PCS fiber was thermally oxidized and dissolved in toluene to remove the unoxidized area, the core of the cured fiber. The wall thickness ($t_{wall}$) of Al-PCS fiber was monotonically increased with an increasing oxidation curing time. The Al-PCS hollow fiber was heat-treated at the temperature between 1200 and $2000^{\circ}C$ to make a SiC hollow fibers having porous structure on the fiber wall. The pore size of the fiber wall was increased with the sintering temperature due to the decomposition of the amorphous $SiC_xO_y$ matrix and the growth of ${\beta}$-SiC in the matrix. At $1400^{\circ}C$, a nano porous wall with a high specific surface area was obtained. However, nano pores grew with the grain growth after the thermal decomposition of the amorphous matrix. This type of SiC hollow fibers are expected to be used as a substrate for a gas separation membrane.

  • The alumina hollow fiber membranes were prepared by spinning and sintering a polymer solution containing suspended alumina powders. For determine pore structure of hollow fiber membranes formed by different solvent-nonsolvent interaction rate, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylacetamide (DMAc), triethylphosphite (TEP) were prepared in dope solution by solvent, polyethersulfone (PESf) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as a polymer binder and additive. The pore structure of hollow fiber membranes was characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The alumina hollow fiber membranes prepared by DMSO, DMAc were had the asymmetric structure mixed sponge-like and finger-like morphology, while TEP solvent were had single sponge-like structure. The prepared hollow fiber membranes were analyzed gas permeation and mechanical strength experiment also. The hollow fiber membrane having single sponge-like structure was had high gas permeation performance. On the contrary to this, more finger-like morphology was less gas permeation performance.

  • In this study, CO2 separation experiment was performed on a CH4/CO2 mixed gas using a ceramic hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC). In order to fabricate high-performance HFMC, experiments were conducted to manufacture high-permeability hollow fiber membranes, and the prepared hollow fiber membranes were evaluated through N2 gas permeation experiments. HFMC for CH4/CO2 mixed gas separation was manufactured using the manufactured high-permeability hollow fiber membrane. In the experiment, mixed gas of CH4/CO2 (34.5% CO2, CH4 balance) and monoetanolamine (MEA) was used, and the effect of CO2 removal efficiency on the flow rate of the absorbent was evaluated. The CO2 removal efficiency increased as the liquid flow rate increased, and the CO2 absorption flux also increased with the liquid flow rate.

  • In this study, CO2 separation experiment was performed on a CH4/CO2 mixed gas using a ceramic hollow fiber membrane contactor module (HFMC). In order to fabricate high-durability HFMC, a high-durability hollow fiber membrane was prepared and evaluated. HFMC was fabricated using the prepared hollow fiber membrane, and the experiment used a mixture of CH4/CO2 (30% CO2, CH4 balance) and monoethanolamine (MEA). During HFMC operation, the effect of gas and absorbent pressure on the CO2 removal efficiency was evaluated. The CO2 removal efficiency increased as the gas pressure increased, and the CO2 absorption flux also showed a tendency to increase with the liquid flow rate. In addition, when the CO2 absorption rate was less than 40%, LTS-1, a counter-current form where the absorbent enters from the bottom, has higher CO2 removal performance than LTS-2, a countercurrent form in which the absorbent enters from the top. and when the absorption rate was 40% or higher, LTS-2 had higher performance than LTS-1.

  • Ethanol fermentation of glucose by a strain of Saccharomyces cereuisiae was studied in membrane recycle bioreactor, where the fermentation vessel was coupled with cross flow hollow fiber membrane. The cell recycle system controlled backflushing with fresh medium was proven to be effective in alleviating membrane fouling and allowing long term operation of high-cell continuous fermentation. Using 100 g/l initial glucose concentration, the maximum productivity of about 9 5 g/$l \cdot h$ has been achieved at dilution rate 2.5 $h^{-1}$ and bleed stream ratio 0.05 with the corresponding ethanol concentration of 35g/l and glucose conversion of 100%. Increasing the glucose concentration to 200 g/$l \cdot h$ resulted in an increase in ethanol concentration to 48 g/l and productivity to 120 g1l.h. Substrate conversion, however, was only 69%. This productivity was the highest value in the study, and about 38 fold more than that of batch culture and 17 fold more that of single stage continuous culture without cell recycling. No further increase in the productivity was obtained when the glucose concentration was increased reased to 300g/l.

  • The aim of this paper is to prepare metal/ceramic composite ultrafiltration membranes by coating inorganic particles on a metallic hollow fiber filter. The diameter and the pore size of the filter was 2.0 mm and $2{\sim}8{\mu}m$. The metal/ceramic composite ultrafiltration membranes were obtained by a coating process of silica and titania sols on top of the metallic filter. For this purpose the method of fast freeze drying and dip-coating were used. It was found that the pore size of the membrane was about 50 nm from SEM and PMI characterization. The pore size was controlled by changing the size of the particles, sintering period and temperature.

  • In this study, homogeneous and defect-free ceramic ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by using the sol-gel method. A boehmite sol was synthesized and coated onto the surface of alumina hollow fiber microfiltration membranes. The effect of sol viscosity and surface tension on the coating layer homogeneity and thickness was investigated. The optimum coating repetition using pristine sol was determined to be 3 times, as the samples coated more than 4 times showed delamination. Fixing the coating repetition to 3 times, the effect of sintering temperature was also studied in this work. The samples sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ exhibited the highest pure water permeability with the molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of approximately 51 kDa (10 nm dextran), and the samples sintered at 600, $800^{\circ}C$ displayed the MWCO of 12 kDa (5 nm dextran). The ultrafiltration membranes prepared in this work showed competitive performance compared to the reported ceramic ultrafiltration membranes.

  • There are several different methods to characterize membrane pore size distribution, however, it is yet difficult to accurately measure pore size range of 10-50 nm. In this work, we employed gas-liquid displacement porometer (GLDP) and liquid-liquid displacement porometer (LLDP) to characterize in-house alumina hollow fiber membrane (K-100) and commercial membranes (A-100, A-20) that exhibit pore sizes between 10-100 nm. GLDP method was more suitable for measuring the maximum pore size, and the measured mean pore size of the membranes by LLDP were better correlated with water permeability and solute rejection. It was determined that LLDP is effective for measuring pore sizes between 10-50 nm; however, the method holds intrinsic disadvantages such as low precision and high sensitivity compared to that of GLDP. Nevertheless, it is expected that the recently commercialized LLDP technique can provide useful data that other methods cannot.
