  • ent-Kaurane- and ent-pimarane-type diterpenoids were isolated from the methanol extract of Siegesbeckia pubescens by column chromatography. Their structures were elucidated as ent-16$\alpha$H,17-hydroxy-kauran-19-oic acid (1), ent-4,17-dihydroxy-16$\alpha$-methyl-kauran-19-oic acid (2), ent-16$\beta$,17-dihydroxy-kauran-19-oic acid (3), kirenol (4) and ent-16$\beta$,17,18-trihydroxy-kauran19-oic acid (5) by spectral analysis. The cytotoxicity of these compounds in Caki cells was assayed by a cell counting kit. Only one group treated with kirenol (4), an entpimarane-type diterpenoid, showed the inhibition of the cell growth in Caki cells.

  • The first edition of 'A Standardized Pathology Report for Gastric Cancer' was initiated by the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists and published 17 years ago. Since then, significant advances have been made in the pathologic diagnosis, molecular genetics, and management of gastric cancer (GC). To reflect those changes, a committee for publishing a second edition of the report was formed within the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists. This second edition consists of two parts: standard data elements and conditional data elements. The standard data elements contain the basic pathologic findings and items necessary to predict the prognosis of GC patients, and they are adequate for routine surgical pathology service. Other diagnostic and prognostic factors relevant to adjuvant therapy, including molecular biomarkers, are classified as conditional data elements to allow each pathologist to selectively choose items appropriate to the environment in their institution. We trust that the standardized pathology report will be helpful for GC diagnosis and facilitate large-scale multidisciplinary collaborative studies.

  • Hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin film transistors were fabricated on a flexible metal substrate. A negative voltage at a floated gate can be induced by a negative substrate bias through a capacitor between the substrate and gate electrode. This can recover the shifted-threshold voltage to an original value.

  • Scrub typhus develops after the individual is bitten by a trombiculid mite infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi. Since it has been reported that pneumonia is frequently observed in patients with scrub typhus, we investigated whether intranasal (i.n.) vaccination with the outer membrane protein of O. tsutsugamushi (OMPOT) would induce a protective immunity against O. tsutsugamushi infection. It was particular interest that when mice were infected with O. tsutsugamushi, the bacteria disseminated into the lungs, causing pneumonia. The i.n. vaccination with OMPOT induced IgG responses in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. The anti-O. tsutsugamushi IgA Abs in BAL fluid after the vaccination showed a high correlation of the protection against O. tsutsugamushi. The vaccination induced strong Ag-specific Th1 and Th17 responses in the both spleen and lungs. In conclusion, the current study demonstrated that i.n. vaccination with OMPOT elicited protective immunity against scrub typhus in mouse with O. tsutsugamushi infection causing subsequent pneumonia.

  • Space Physics Sensor (SPS) on-board the KOMPSAT-1 consists of the High Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) and the Ionospheric Measurement Sensor (IMS). The HEPD is to characterize the low altitude high energy particle environment and the effects on the microelectronics due to these high energy Particles. It is composed of four sensors: Proton and Electron Spectrometer(PES), Linear Energy Transfer Spectrometer (LET), Total Dose Monitor (TDM), and Single Event Monitor(SEM). 35MeV proton beam from the medical KCCH cyclotron, at Korea Cancer Center Hospital in Seoul, is used to calibrate the PES. Primary proton beam of 35MeV scattered by polypropylene target is converted to various energy Protons according to the elastic collision kinematics. In this calibration, the threshold level of the proton in the PES can be determined and the energy ranges of PES channels are also calibrated.
