An adaptive Cartesian grid method having the best elements of structured, unstructured, and Cartesian grids is developed to solve the steady two-dimensional Euler equations. The solver is based on a cell-centered finite-volume method with Roe's flux-difference splitting and implicit point Gauss-seidel time integration method. Calculations of several compressible flows are carried out to show the efficiency of the developed computer code. The results were generally in good agreements with existing data in the literature and the developed code has the good ability to capture important feature of the flows.
We analyze the characteristics of a coaxial-to-waveguide transition based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with the cylindrical to rectangular cell interpolation scheme. The scheme presented in this paper is well suited for the analysis of a microwave device with a probe near waveguide discontinuity because perfect TEM mode can be generated inside the coaxial cable by using the cylindrical cell. The scattering parameters of a designed Ka-band transition are evaluated and compared with those of commercially available software, High Frequency Structure analysis Simulator (HFSS) and measured data. There exists good agreement between the measured and calculated data. In order to prove an accuracy of the interpolation scheme, a coaxial to waveguide transition with a disk-loaded probe is analyzed by the present approach and the results of this analysis are compared with measured data. Comparison shows that our results match very closely to those of measurement and other approaches. The method presented in this paper can be applied to analyze the characteristics of a probe excited cavity, coaxial waveguide T-Junctions, and so on.
The interaction between advancing ships and the waves generated by them plays important roles in wave resistances and ship motions. Wave breaking phenomena near the ship bow at different speeds are investigated both numerically and experimentally. Numerical simulations of free surface profiles near the fore bodies of ships are performed and visualized to grasp the general trend or the mechanism of wave breaking phenomena from moderate waves rather than concentrating on local chaotic irregularities as ship speeds increase. Navier-Stokes equations are differentiated based on the finite difference method. The Marker and Cell (MAC) Method and Marker-Density Method are employed, and they are compared for the description of free surface conditions associated with the governing equations. Extra effort has been directed toward the realization of extremely complex free surface conditions at wave breaking. For this purpose, the air-water interface is treated with marker density, which is used for two layer flows of fluids with different properties. Adaptation schemes and refinement of the numerical grid system are also used at local complex flows to improve the accuracy of the solutions. In addition to numerical simulations, various model tests are performed in a ship model towing tank. The results are compared with numerical calculations for verification and for realizing better, more efficient research performance. It is expected that the present research results regarding wave breaking and the geometry of the fore body of ship will facilitate better hull form design productivity at the preliminary ship design stage, especially in the case of small and fast ship design. Also, the obtained knowledge on the impact due to the interaction of breaking waves and an advancing hull surface is expected to be applicable to investigation of the ship bow slamming problem as a specific application.

Use of a plasma arc as the source of energy for penetration welding of thin plates gives rise to a cylindrical hole surrounded by the molten metal. Material moves from the front to the rear of the hole by flowing around the hole as the workpiece is translated relatively to the arc. Based on the finite difference method, three different computer models have been proposed for the steady state, two dimensional heat and mass flow during the plasma arc welding. In the formulation energy equation was derived by the energy blance method through the cell control volume, and all the governing equations derived for the fixed coordinates was translated for the moving coordinate system. The driving force for fluid flow being considered was only electromagnetic force. The calculated and measured molten poon and HAZ width were compared and better agreement was obtained for the models considering the keyhole effect.

Numerical calculations are carried out for the natural convection induced by temperature difference between a cold outer square cylinder and a hot inner circular cylinder. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained, using the immersed boundary method (IBM) to model an inner circular cylinder based on finite volume method, for different Rayleigh numbers varying over the range of $10^4\;to\;10^6$. The study goes further to investigate the effect of an inner cylinder location on the heat transfer and fluid flow. The location of inner circular cylinder is changed vertically along the center-line of square enclosure. The number, size and formation of cell strongly depend on Rayleigh number and the position of inner circular cylinder. The changes in heat transfer quantities have been presented.
Improvement of soft clay deposit by preloading with vertical drains is one of the most popular techniques followed worldwide. These drains accelerate the rate of consolidation by shortening the drainage path. Although the analytical and numerical solutions available are mostly based on equal strain hypothesis, the adoption of free strain analysis is more realistic because of the flexible nature of the imposed surcharge loading, especially for the embankment loading used for transport infrastructure. In this paper, a numerical model has been developed based on free strain hypothesis for understanding the behaviour of soft ground improvement by vertical drain with preloading. The unit cell analogy is used and the effect of smear has been incorporated. The model has been validated by comparing with available field test results and thereafter, a hypothetical case study is done using the available field data for soft clay deposit existing in the eastern part of Australia and important conclusions are drawn therefrom.
This study incorporates a high-fidelity transient analysis solver based on multigroup CMFD in the MOC code STREAM. Transport modeling with heterogeneous geometries of the reactor core increases computational cost in terms of memory and time, whereas the multigroup CMFD reduces the computational cost. The reactor condition does not change at every time step, which is a vital point for the utilization of CMFD. CMFD correction factors are updated from the transport solution whenever the reactor core condition changes, and the simulation continues until the end. The transport solution is adjusted once CMFD achieves the solution. The flux-weighted method is used for rod decusping to update the partially inserted control rod cell material, which maintains the solution's stability. A smaller time-step size is needed to obtain an accurate solution, which increases the computational cost. The adaptive step-size control algorithm is robust for controlling the time step size. This algorithm is based on local errors and has the potential capability to accept or reject the solution. Several numerical problems are selected to analyze the performance and numerical accuracy of parallel computing, rod decusping, and adaptive time step control. Lastly, a typical pressurized LWR was chosen to study the rod-ejection accident.

Marine analysis was made to investigate the hydrodynamic effects of a Wing in Ground (WIG) by means of finite difference techniques. The air flow field around WIG is analyzed by the Marker & Cell (MAC) based method, and the interaction between WIG and the free surface are studied by showing pressure distributions above the free surface. In the latter part, computations are extended to make clear the flow characteristics of a high speed catamaran in the rang of Froude numbers 0.2 to 1.0 with a separation to length ratios of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5. The Navier-Stokes solver is invoked in which the nonlinear free-surface boundary condition is applied. For the validation, computational results are compared with the experiments.
A digital wave tank (DWT) simulation technique has been developed by authors to investigate the interactions of fully nonlinear waves with 3D marine structures. A finite-difference/volume method and a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) algorithm have been used, which are based on the Navier-Stokes (NS) and continuity equations. The fully nonlinear kinematic free-surface condition is implemented by the marker-density function (MDF) technique or the Level-Set (LS) technique developed for one or two fluid layers. In this paper, some applications for various engineering problems with free-surface are introduced and discussed. It includes numerical simulation of marine environments by simulation equipments, fully nonlinear wave motions around offshore structures, nonlinear ship waves, ship motions in waves and marine flow simulation with free-surface. From the presented simulations, it seems that the developed DWT simulation technique can handle various engineering problems with free-surface and reliably predict hydrodynamic features due to the fully-nonlinear wave motions interacting with such marine structures.
The aerodynamic effects of a 3-dimensional Wing in Ground Effect (WIG) which moves above the free surface has been numerically investigated via finite difference techniques. The air flow field around a WIG is analyzed by a Marker & Cell (MAC) based method, and the interactions between WIG and the free surface are studied by the pressure distributions on the free surface. Waves are generated by the surface pressure distribution, and a Navier-Stokes solver has been employed, to include the nonlinearities in the free surface conditions. The pressure values Cp and lift/drag ratio are reviewed by changing the height/chord ratio. In the present computations a NACA0012 airfoil with a span/chord ratio of 3.0 are treated. Through computational results, it is confirmed that the free surface can be treated as a rigid wavy wall.
