  • In this paper, compatibility between different radio services or systems is analyzed when they are in adjacent band or co-channel. The first step of the compatibility analysis is establishing an interference scenario. And an interference pobability from an interfering transmitter to a victim receiver is calculated by means of Monte-Carlo simulation techniques. Then the calculated result is compared with the predefined interference criteria, maximum permissible interference probability and we can determine compatibility in accordance with the active interferer density, channel bandwidth, cell radius, distance between interfering transmitter and victim receiver, and duty cycle. It is assumed that Propagation modes are the free space model and extened Hata model.

  • A centralized cognitive radio (CR) network is proposed and its system capacity is studied. The CR network is designed with power control and multi-user scheduling schemes to support best-effort traffics under peak interference power constraints. We provide an analytical framework to quantify its system capacity, taking into account various key factors such as interference constraints, density of primary users, cell radius, the number of CR users, and propagations effects. Furthermore, closed-form formulas are derived for its capacities when only path loss is considered in the channel model. Semi-analytical expressions for the capacities are also given when more realistic channel models that include path loss, shadowing, and small-scale fading are used. The accuracy of the proposed analytical framework is validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Illustrated with a practical example, the provided analytical framework is shown to be useful for the strategic planning of centralized CR networks.

  • The present work is an experimental and analytical study on a flexible disk rotating close to a rigid rotating disk in open air. In the analytical study, the air flow in the gap between the flexible disk and the rigid disk is modeled using Navier-Stokes and continuity equations while the flexible disk is modeled using the linear plate theory. The flow equations are discretized using the cell centered finite volume method (FVM) and solved numerically with semi-implicit pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE algorithm). The spatial terms in the disk equation are discretized using the finite difference method (FDM) and the time integration is performed using fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. An experimental test-rig is designed to investigate the dynamics of the flexible disk when rotating close to a co-rotating, a counter-rotating and a fixed rigid disk, which works as a stabilizer. The effects of rotational speed, initial gap height and inlet-hole radius on the flexible disk displacement and its vibration amplitude are investigated experimentally for the different types of stabilizer. Finally, the analytical and experimental results are compared.

  • The sun is a useful reference direction because of its brightness relative to other astronomical objects and its relatively small apparent radius as viewed by spacecrafts near the Earth. Most satellites use solar power as a source of energy, and so need to make sure that solar panels are oriented correctly with respect to the sun. Also, some satellites have sensitive instruments that must not be exposed to direct sunlight. For all these reasons, sun sensors are important components in spacecraft attitude determination and control systems. To minimize components and structural mass, some components have multiple purposes. The solar cells will provide power and also be used as coarse sun sensors. A coarse Sun sensor is a low-cost attitude determination sensor suitable for a wide range of space missions. The sensor measures the sun angle in two orthogonal axes. The Sun sensor measures the sun angle in both azimuth and elevation. This paper presents the development of a model to determine the attitude of a small cube-shaped satellite in space relative to the sun's direction. This sensor helps small cube-shaped Pico satellites to perform accurate attitude determination without requiring additional hardware.

  • The steam reformer for hydrogen production from methane is studied by a numerical method. Langmuir- Hinshelwood model is incorporated for catalytic surface reactions, and the pseudo-homogeneous model is used to take into account local equilibrium phenomena between a catalyst and bulk gas. Dominant chemical reactions are Steam Reforming (SR) reaction, Water-Gas Shift (WGS) reaction, and Direct Steam Reforming (DSR) reaction. The numerical results are validated with experimental results at the same operating conditions. Using the validated code, parametric study has been numerically performed in view of the steam reformer performance. As increasing a wall temperature, the fuel conversion increases due to the high heat transfer rate. When Steam to Carbon Ratio (SCR) increases, the concentration of carbon monoxide decreases since WGS reaction becomes more active. When increasing Gas Hourly Space Velocity (GHSV), the fuel conversion decreases due to the heat transfer limitation and the low residence time. The reactor shape effects are also investigated. The length and radius of cylindrical reactors are changed at the same catalyst volume. The longer steam reformer is, the better steam reformer performs. However, system energy efficiency decreases due to the large pressure drop.

  • Target design study to improve the quality of an accelerated proton beam from the interaction of a high-intensity short pulse laser with an overdense plasma slab has been accomplished by using a two-dimensional, fully electromagnetic and relativistic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The target consists of a thin core part and a thick peripheral part of equivalent plasma densities, while the ratio of the radius of the core part to the laser spot size, and the position of the peripheral part relative to the fixed core part were varied. The positive effects of this core-peripheral target structure could be expected from the knowledge of the typical target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) mechanism in a laser-plasma interaction, and were apparently evidenced from the comparison with the case of a conventional simple planar target and the case of the transversal size reduction of the simple planar target. Improvements of the beam qualities including the collimation, the forward directionality, and the beam divergence were verified by detailed analysis of relativistic momentum, angular directionality, and the spatial density map of the accelerated protons.

  • In this research, a developed microstructural model of cement particles was presented to describe the cement hydration procedure. To simplify the hydration process, the whole hydration was analyzed in a series of sub-steps. In each step, the hydration degree, as well as the microstructural size of the hydration cell, was calculated as a function of the radius of the unreacted cement particles. With the consideration of the water consumption and the reduction of the interfacial area between water and hydration products, the micro-level expressions of the cement hydration kinetics were established. Then the heat released and temperature history of the concrete was carried out with the hydration degree obtained from each sub-steps. The equivalent age method based on the Arrhenius law was introduced in this research. Based on the equivalent age method, a maturity model was applied to describe the evolution of the mechanical properties of the material during the hydration process. The finite element program ANSYS was used to analyze the temperature field in concrete structures. Then thermal stress field was calculated using the elasticity modulus obtained from code formulate. And the risk of thermal cracking was estimated by the comparison of thermal stress and concrete tensile strength.

Compared with GSM, DECT provides low-cost communication services based on the PSTN and it is an ideal supplementary method for the type of in-building mobile communication. • This study is to apply the mechanical press joining method to join two kinds of sheet metals with circular holes by mechanical pressing instead of laser beam. Usage of the mechanical pressing avoids the thermal deformation of sheet metals which occurs inevitably in laser joining. A die design has been proposed to make the mechanical press joining applicable with finite element analysis. Five design factors related to the joining force have been selected and applied to the Taguchi method for optimization. Among five factors, 'Forming Depth' and 'Punch Corner Radius' have been revealed to be the most influential ones.
