High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein and Risks of All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality in a Japanese Population

  • Background: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels are lower in Japanese compared with Western subjects. Since it is uncertain whether hsCRP is a potent predictor of mortality at low CRP concentrations, the present study examined associations with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a large population of Japanese. Materials and Methods: Subjects were 4,737 men and 6,343 women aged 49-76 years participating in the baseline survey of an ongoing cohort study of lifestyle-related diseases between February 2004 and July 2006. Hazard ratios for all-cause and cause-specific mortality associated with hsCRP levels were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression. Results: A total of 436 all-cause deaths occurred during a median follow-up of 8 years. The main cause of death was cancer. In men, hsCRP levels were positively associated with the risk of all-cause mortality as well as deaths from cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD). All-cause mortality hazards for the 2nd (0.34-0.84 mg/L) and the 3rd (${\geq}0.85mg/L$) tertiles of hsCRP were 1.27 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.93-1.73) and 1.75 (1.30-2.37), respectively (p for trend=0.001). In women, increased risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality associated with elevated hsCRP levels was observed, but the associations were not statistically significant. Conclusions: HsCRP may be an independent predictor of all-cause, cancer and CVD mortality in apparently healthy Japanese men, but not women. The differential effect of hsCRP in predicting mortality risk by sex warrants further investigation.

Electrical Fire Cause Diagnosis System Using a Knowledge Base

  • For last several decades with the achievement of fast economic development, the electrical fires occupies over 30 percent of total fire incidents almost every year in Korea and not decreased in spite of much times and efforts. Electrical fire cause diagnostics are to confirm a cause for the fire by examination of fire scene. Cause diagnosis methods haven't been systematized yet, because of limits for available information, investigator's biased knowledge, etc. Therefore, in order to assist the investigators and to find out the exact causes of electrical fires, required is research for an electrical fire cause diagnosis system using DB, computer programming and some mathematical tools. The electrical fire cause diagnosis system has two functions of DB and electrical fire cause diagnosis. The cause diagnosis is conducted by a case-based reasoning on a case base and rule-based reasoning on a rule base. For the diagnosis with high reliability, a mixed reasoning approach of a case-based reasoning and fuzzy rule-based reasoning has been adopted. The electrical fire cause diagnosis system proposes the electrical fire causes inferred from the diagnosis processes, and possibility of the causes as well.

소비자 가치 및 과시적 소비성향이 공익마케팅 패션제품에 대한 태도 및 구매의도에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Consumer Value and Conspicuous Consumption Tendency on the Attitude toward and Purchase Intention of Fashion Cause-related Marketing Products)

  • This study examines how consumer value and conspicuous consumption tendency influence attitudes and purchase intention toward fashion cause-related marketing products. Survey questionnaires were distributed to 326 women in their 20's to 50's living in Seoul January 2012. The instruments included measurements of consumer value, conspicuous consumption tendency, attitude toward fashion cause-related marketing products, intention to purchase fashion cause-related marketing products, and demographics. Factor analysis, correlations, and multiple regressions were conducted using SPSS 12.0. The results of this research are as follows. Consumer value affected attitude toward fashion cause-related marketing products as well as intention to purchase products. Those with a higher conspicuous consumption tendency showed a higher intention to purchase fashion cause-related marketing products, regardless of attitude toward fashion CRM products. This indicates that and association with famous prestige brands will increase the possibility of success of cause-related marketing products. The research helps establish a marketing strategy to launch new fashion cause-related marketing products by discovering the relationships between consumer consumption patterns and attitudes toward fashion cause-related marketing products.

간질(癎疾)의 원인(原因)에 대한 동서의학적(東西醫學的) 고찰(考察) (The investigation into the cause of epilepsy between east and west medicine)

  • Through a literal study upon the cause of epilepsy between east and west medicine, next conclusion have been abtained. 1. The cause epilepsy in the east medicine, congenital embryo disease is due to insufficiency of heart(心虛) or deficiency of heart energy(心氣虛), secondary cause is wind -evil(風), frightness(驚), phlegm(痰), fire(火) 2. The cause epilepsy in the west medicine is divided congenital disease and secondary cause, one is excessive discharge of electricity of the brain have on a central nerve, a digestive organ, a respiratory organ, hamatogenous functions, the other is hereditary it and pathological it. 3. The epilepsy is concerned about the abnormality in five viscera, liver, spleen, heart. 4. In comparison east and west medicine of epilepsy is native factor, or innate primary cause is added to outer cause of wind-evil(風), cold-evil(寒), summer-heat(署), wetness(濕), and inner cause of frightness-terror(驚-恐), seven modes of emotions(七情) and the epilepsy is occurred phlegm(痰), fire(火). It similar that the epilepsy is occurred to structural and functional obstacle in western hereditary and primary cause.

MFM-based alarm root-cause analysis and ranking for nuclear power plants

  • Alarm flood due to abnormality propagation is the most difficult alarm overloading problem in nuclear power plants (NPPs). Root-cause analysis is suggested to help operators in understand emergency events and plant status. Multilevel Flow Modeling (MFM) has been extensively applied in alarm management by virtue of the capability of explaining causal dependencies among alarms. However, there has never been a technique that can identify the actual root cause for complex alarm situations. This paper presents an automated root-cause analysis system based on MFM. The causal reasoning algorithm is first applied to identify several possible root causes that can lead to massive alarms. A novel root-cause ranking algorithm can subsequently be used to isolate the most likely faults from the other root-cause candidates. The proposed method is validated on a pressurized water reactor (PWR) simulator at HAMMLAB. The results show that the actual root cause is accurately identified for every tested operating scenario. The automation of root-cause identification and ranking affords the opportunity of real-time alarm analysis. It is believed that the study can further improve the situation awareness of operators in the alarm flooding situation.

  • 유비쿼터스 시스템을 개발하기 위해서는 여러 전문 분야를 포괄하는 복합적 지식과 가상적 접근이 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 요구를 만족시키기 위해 CAUSE(Computer-Aided Ubiquitous System Engineering)를 제안한다. CAUSE는 유비쿼터스 시스템 자체를 하나의 컴퓨터 지원 도구를 사용하여 개발하는 것으로 유비쿼터스 시스템 엔지니어가 복합적 관점에서 시스템을 개발할 수 있도록 해준다. 논문에서는 우선 CAUSE의 아키텍처를 제안하고 그것을 유비쿼터스 기숙사에 적용한 CAUSE for Ubiquitous Dormitory 개발에 대해 소개한다.

Overcoming the Cause Marketing Paradox: The Effect of Nostalgia on Charitable Giving and Happiness

  • The current research examines whether and when cause marketing, whereby firms link product sales to the support of a charity or cause, can increase charitable giving and happiness. Previous research suggests that cause marketing might reduce charitable giving and happiness among consumers. However, the present research finds the opposite result by introducing nostalgia as a moderator; cause marketing can enhance consumers' charity giving when their nostalgia is triggered. Moreover, results show that charitable giving increased by cause marketing improves feelings of happiness, suggesting that people view charitable behavior as a means of enhancing happiness. Interestingly, charitable giving and happiness are promoted by the situational priming of nostalgic events, but not by chronic individual differences such as nostalgia proneness.
