Objective : This study was designed to assess the protective effects of Bambusae caulis and St. John's Wort on the animal model of depression, induced by chronic mild stress(CMS) Method : Male Wistar rats were used for this experiment. The subjects were divided into 4 groups ( 1. CMS-drugs: Bambusae caulis administered during CMS treatment, 2. CMS-drugs: St. John's Wort administered during CMS treatment, 3. CMS-vehicle: Water administered during CMS treatment, 4. normal control group without CMS treatment ). After 3 weeks of CMS treatment, they were executed open field test and weight, sucrose intake were measured. Result : 1. CMS Bambusae caulis group showed significant difference of locomotor activities and marginal difference of start latency in comparison with other groups in open field test. 2. There was no change of weights between CMS Bambusae caulis, St. John's Wort groups and CMS control group. 3. CMS St. John's Wort group showed upper level of sucrose intake than CMS Bambusae caulis group and CMS control group. Conclusion : These results suggest that Bambusae caulis may have protective antidepressant effects in CMS model rats. And these effects could be explained by the elevated locomotor activities in open field test.
Objectives : External form and internal intersection of Phragmites communis were observed by the parts of usage (leaves, stems, and roots). Methods : The slice of the tested material made by paraffin section technique was colored with Safranine Malachite Green contrast methods, and then observed and photographed by olymphus-BHT. Results : 1. The intersection of Phragmitis Folium was typically characterized as Gramineae plants, which was perfectly distinguished with Phragmitis Rhizoma and Phragmitis Caulis. 2. The cortex of Phragmitis Rhizoma has a large rectangular pore space, but Phragmitis Caulis does not. Conclusion : Phragmitis Folium, Phragmitis Caulis, and Phragmitis Rhizoma can be distinguished by microscope.
Objective : Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen has been used by East Asian doctors who approved efficient clinical effects of it since the early stage of medical history. It is commonly used for lifestyle related diseases including stroke in recent days thanks to the increasing number of manufacturers. However, products from pharmaceutical companies as well as food companies are not classified as Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen but Bamboo vinegar. This study aims to discern disparate manufacturing process. Methods : In this study, original texts were searched to corroborate the correct method to produce Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen. It is essential to inspect the original texts thoroughly in the course of modernizing traditional knowledge. Result : Discrimination between the two substances starts from manufacturing process; Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen is made under the temperature of less then $170^{\circ}C$, containing mild fragrance and sweet taste, and the Bamboo vinegar over $170^{\circ}C$ upto $400^{\circ}C$, carrying strong smoky scent and acidness. Although some researches show conforming clinical actions of both products, still there is a possibility that closer clinical study would reveal their discrepancy. Conclusion : Current use of Bambusae vinegar needs speculation. Authenticity in proper manufacturing process can be attained through passed-on medical texts.
Objectives : This study was built to investigate the effect of Trachelospermi Caulis herbal-acupuncture on the Collagen-induced arthritis(CIA) in rats. Methods : Arthritis was induced by intradermal injection of Bovine type II collagen solution into base of tail. Experimental group were divided into 5 groups ; Normal(N) group, Control(C) group, Trachelospermi Caulis high(TH) group, Trachelospermi Caulis low(TL) group, Saline(S) group(n=7 for each group). Normal group was had no management. Control group was injected with Bovine type II collagen solution and taken no treatment. Trachelospermi Caulis high group was injected with Bovine type II collagen solution and taken high-intensity(10mg/kg) herbal-acupuncture treatment on $ST_{36}$. Trachelospermi Caulis low group was injected with Bovine type II collagen solution and taken low-intensity(5mg/kg) herbal-acupuncture treatment on $ST_{36}$. Saline group was injected with Bovine type II collagen solution and taken saline injection on $ST_{36}$. Body weight, paw edema volume and ankle joint thickness were measured during experimental day. On the last experimental day, we analyzed WBC count, TNF-$\alpha$ & IL-$1{\beta}$ concentration, c-fos immunohistochemistry and NADPH-d histochemistry for evaluating the effect of Trachelospermi Caulis herbal-acupuncture. Results : The results were as follows ; 1. In the change of paw edema volume, TH group only has significant difference compared with C group. 2. In the change of ankle joint thickness, TH group only has significant difference compared with C group. 3. In WBC count of serum, TH, TL groups have significant decrease compared with C group. 4. In TNF-$\alpha$ concentration of effusion, TH, TL groups have significant decrease compared with C group. and TH group has significant decrease compared with TL group. 5. In IL-$1{\beta}$ concentration of effusion, TH, TL groups have significant decrease compared with C group. and TH group has significant decrease compared with TL group. 6. In c-fos positive neurons of S1S2(cortex) region, TH, TL, S groups have significant decrease compared with C group. 7. In NADPH-d positive neurons of CPu(caudate putamen) region, TH, TL groups have significant decrease compared with C group. 8. In NADPH-d positive neurons of Tfp(transverse fibers of pons) region, TH, TL, S groups have significant decrease compared with C group. and TH group has significant decrease compared with S group. Conclusions : According to above results, we hope that Trachelospermi Caulis herbal-acupuncture may have the effect that decreases progression and development of CIA. And it can be suggested that Trachelospermi Caulis herbal-acupuncture may reduce the expression of c-fos and NOS.
This study was carried out to understand the effects of Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen on blood sugar in the db/db mice. Refined Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen C. D(BCL.C. D)manufactured by high temperature production process and Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen(H-BCL) manufactured & distributed by HANLIM PHARM.COM., LTD were used. The Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen extracted from bamboo charooal manufacturing process was filtered and refined. The effects of Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen were administered orally to mice for 6weeks and its anti-diabetic effect examined. The effects of BCL.C. D and H-BCL were observed in terms of blood sugar. creatinine. BUN and GPT in db/db mice. The results were as follows : The amount of glucose was slightly decreased (P<0.05) in the B CL.C-treated groups compared with the control. The amount of glucose was significantly decreased (P<0.01) in the BCL.D and H-BCL-treated groups compared with the control. The amount of creatinine did not show any differences among four groups. The amount of blood urea nitrogen did not show any differences in the case of BCL.C-treated groups. but observed significant decrease in the case of BCL.D and H-BCL-treated groups. The amount of GPT did not show any differences in the case of BCL.D-treated groups. but observed significant increase in the case of BCL.C and H-BCL-treated groups.
In order to investigate the immunomodulational effects of Lonicerae Caulis et Folium, the author measured cytokines production(IL-10, IL-12(P35), IL12(P40), $IFN-{\gamma}$) in mice splenocytes. The results were obtained as follows : 1. The water extract of Lonicerae Caulis et Folium significantly enhanced the gene expression of IL-12(P35), IL-12(P40), but reduced the gene expression of IL-10, $IFN-{\gamma}$. 2. In water fraction and ethyl acetate fraction, the gene expression of IL-12(P35), $IFN-{\gamma}$ was significantly increased and that of IL-12(P40), IL-10 was decreased. The above results demonstrate that Lonicerae Caulis et Folium has enhancing immune activity by upregulation of these cytokines. Therefore, if we make the relationship between these cytokines(IL-10, IL-12, $IFN-{\gamma}$) besides IL-1, IL-4, IL-6, $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-8, $TGF-{\beta}$ and so on which concerned the immunopotentiation, the immunopotentiational mechanism of Lonicerae Caulis et Folium will be shown clearly.
