  • Dendropanax morbifera H.Lev is an evergreen tree that lives in subtropical climates. About 75 species of D. morbifera live in East Asia, but only one species live in Korea(Korean dendropanax). D. morbifera belonging to Aralicacae family 98% of D. morbifera are distributed in Jeollanam-do in the Korea and the grow wild in Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeju Island. The harvest time and usage of D. morbifera were recorded in traditional medicinal books. The roots and stems of D. morbifera had been used for traditional medicine to treat migraine, menstrual irregularity and skin disease. And D. morbifera leaves are contain flavonoids and polyacetylene compounds. In this study, we were investigated the physiological activity of D. morbifera by different areas collected at the same time, and compared to characteristics of plants. D. morbifera collected from Jeollanam-do (Goheung-gun), Gyeongsangnam-do (Namhae-gun) and Jeju Island, and dried at $50^{\circ}C$ for three days. We used dried D. morbifera powder for antioxidant tests. Each sample was extracted with hot water under the same conditions. The contents of total polyphenols and total flavonoids from D. morbifera were identified. Also, we performed to DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS cation radical scavenging activity and Superoxide anion scavenging activity efficacy for antioxidant activity determination. The contents of total polyphenols and total flavonoids in hot water extract of D. morbifera harvested from Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do were higher than Jeju. However, D. morbifera harvested from Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do showed no significant difference those content of total polyphenols and total flavonoids. And the antioxidant capacity was showed the similar patterns in antioxidant activity.

  • Although the importance of size-resolved raindrops study has been known, it has not been popularized up to the present. In the present study, an attempt was made to generalize the size-resolved raindrops study by a combination of the frozen raindrop collection method and a commercially available high-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE). Samplings were carried out at Kyoto, Japan in October 2002. The inorganic ions (chloride, nitrate, sulphate, calcium, ammonium, sodium, magnesium, potassium) in size classified raindrop samples were successfully analyzed by HPCE with good repeatability. To assure the accuracy and precision of HPCE data, t-test was conducted with paired analytical data, which were experimentally constructed by analyzing standard solutions with HPCE and IC, respectively. T-test showed that there is no notable difference between the concentrations determined by the two analytical methods. Every ionic concentration in both cation and anion was found to be strong raindrop size dependence. Though there was slight increase of sodium and sulphate concentrations between 0.85 mm and 1.15 mm raindrop radius, it showed a strong decrease for every ionic component with increasing droplet radius. The combination of the frozen raindrop collection method and a commercially available HPCE can meet the need of size-resolved raindrops study.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) with or without ruminally protected fat and niacin on the thermoregulatory ability, milk yield and milk composition of lactating dairy cows during summer in Korea. Thirty mid-lactating Holstein cows (134±12.4 DIM and 23.4±2.3kg/d of milk yield) were divided into three groups (10 animals/group). Cows were housed in a free-stall barn and were provided with forced- air ventilation (wind velocity = 4 m/s) using 41 cm diameter fans. Diet one was formulated to contain low DCAD (+15 DCAD) while the remaining two diets were higher in DCAD (+30 DCAD). One higher DCAD diet was formulated to contain by-pass fat and the second higher DCAD diet contained the niacin along with by-pass fat. The maximum ambient temperature during July was 28.5℃ which could be seen as a period of mild heat stress. As summer progressed, August was characterized as a severe heat stress condition with maximum ambient temperature (32.4℃) and THI (74.0). Dry matter, crude protein and total digestible nutrients intake was not affected by the DCAD level and supplementation of ruminally protected fat or niacin. Milk production was higher in cows fed diets supplemented with fat and niacin than those fed un-supplemented diet. No difference in milk yield was observed in cows fed diets supplemented with fat or niacin plus fat. Milk fat and rectal temperature were not affected by the DCAD level and supplementation of ruminally protected fat or niacin. However, respiration rate was decreased in cows fed diets supplemented with either fat or fat and niacin compared to those fed. The results of the present study indicated that higher DCAD (+30) and supplementation of fat along with niacin can somehow mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on milk yield and physiology of lactating Holsteins during July and August in Korea. In present study reduced respiration rate and increased milk yield in lactating cows may be attributed to the cooling effect of supplemented fat along with vasodilatory functions of niacin. (Key Words: DCAD, Heat stress, THI, milk yield, Milk fat, Holstein)

  • This study measured and analyzed the weather characteristics and the air-ion characteristics of walking space by land use type in Chungju, Chungcheongbuk Province during the heat wave. We used the land registration map to classify the type of land use in walking areas in the studied into the production and green area, the residential area, and the commercial area. We then selected 44 measurement points in about 4.1 km. They included 12 walking space points in the green area, 14 in the residential area, and 18 in the commercial area. Moreover, we calculated the ion index by analyzing the impact of weather factors such as temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, and net radiation in the walking space on the anion generation and cation generation by land use type during the heat wave. Comparison of air ion characteristics in walking space by type of land use during the heat wave showed that the average cation generation was in the order of commercial area ($700.73cations/cm^3$) > residential area ($600.76cations/cm^3$) > green area ($589.73cations/cm^3$). The average anion generation was in the order of green area ($663.95anions/cm^3$) > residential area ($628.48anions/cm^3$) > commercial area ($527.48anions/cm^3$). The average ion index was in the order of green area (1.13) > residential area (1.04) > commercial area (0.75). This study checked the weather characteristics, cation generation, and anion generation in walking space according to the land use type during the heat wave and checked the difference of ion indexes in the walking space according to the land use type. However, there were limitations in the lack of accurate comparison according to the land use due to the moving measurement and the insufficient quantitative comparison according to the change of road width. Therefore, we recommend further studies that consider the road characteristics.

  • The purpose of this paper is to understand the time series and origin of a chemical component and to compare the difference during yellow sand episodes for analysis $PM_{10}$ chemical components in the region of west in Korean Peninsula, 1999-2001. An annual mean concentration of $PM_{10}$ is $29.1\;{\mu}g/m^3$. A monthly mean and standard deviation of $PM_{10}$ concentration are very high in spring but there is no remarkably seasonal variation. Also, water soluble ionic component of $PM_{10}$ be influenced by double more total anion than total cation, be included $NO_{3}^-\;and\;SO_{4}^{2-}$ for the source of acidity and $NH_{4}^+$ to neutralize. Tracer metals of $PM_{10}$ slowly increases caused by emitted for soil and ocean (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Na) and Zn, Pb, Cu, Mn for anthropogenic source. According to method of enrichment factor (E.F) and statistics, assuming that the origin of metal component in $PM_{10}$ most of element in the Earth's crust e.g. Mg, Ca, Fe originates soil and Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb derives from anthropogenic sources. The ionic component for $Na^{+}\;Cl^-,\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ and Mg, Al, Ca, Fe originated by soil component largely increase during yellow sand period and then tracer metal component as Pb, Cd, Zn decrease. According to factor analysis, the first group is ionic component ($Na^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+}$) and metal component (Na, Fe, Mn and Ni) be influenced by soil. The second group, Mg, Cr also be influenced by soil particle.

  • A life-cycle assessment (LCA) is based on the attention given to the environmental protection and concerning the possible impact while producing, making, and consuming products. It includes all environmental concerns and the potential impact of a product's life cycle from raw material procurement, manufacturing, usage, and disposal (that is, from cradle to grave). This study assesses the environmental impact of the ultra pure water process of semiconductor manufacturing by a life-cycle assessment in order to point out the heavy environmental impact process for industry when attempting a balanced point between production and environmental protection. The main purpose of this research is studying the development and application of this technology by setting the ultra pure water of semiconductor manufacturing as a target. We evaluate the environmental impact of the Precoat filter process and the Cation/Anion (C/A) filter process of an ultra pure water manufacturing process. The difference is filter material used produces different water quality and waste material, and has a significant, different environmental influence. Finally, we calculate the cost by engineering economics so as to analyze deeply the minimized environmental impact and suitable process that can be accepted by industry. The structure of this study is mainly combined with a life-cycle assessment by implementing analysis software, using SimaPro as a tool. We clearly understand the environmental impact of ultra pure water of semiconductor used and provide a promotion alternative to the heavy environmental impact items by calculating the environmental impact during a life cycle. At the same time, we specify the cost of reducing the environmental impact by a life-cycle cost analysis.

  • In the paper insight is given in the legislation policy to restrain environmental pollution by pig husbandry, focused on The Netherlands (Mineral Accounting System). Besides, nutritional measures are presented to reduce environmental pollution by lowering excretion of N and P, emphasizing (multi) phase feeding, the use of low protein, synthetic amino acids supplemented diets, phytase and its effect on phosphorus and calcium digestibility, its interaction with phytic acid and proteins, and the environmental impact of the use of phytase in pig diets. Also, nutritional means are indicated to reduce ammonia volatilization from pig operations. It is concluded that nutrition management can substantially contribute to reduction of N and P excretion by pigs, mainly by lowering dietary protein levels, (multi) phase feeding and the use of microbial phytase, and that the use of phytase on a large scale in The Netherlands has a tremendous environmental impact. In 20 years the excretion of P in growing-finishing pigs has more than halved. Ammonia emission from manure of pigs can be reduced substantially by lowering dietary protein content, but also by including additional non-starch polysaccharides in the diet. A very promising method to reduce ammonia emission is to manipulate dietary cation-anion difference, e.g. by adding acidifying salts to the diet, which will lower pH of urine substantially. Further research is desirable. This also applies to determining dietary factors influencing the odour release from manure. Finally, some speculation on the future of pig farming from an environmental viewpoint is presented.

  • Eighty-four Holstein cows were used to evaluate effects of feeding two diets that differed in dietary cation-anion difference (cationic; +28 or anionic; -138 mEq/kg DM) on prepartum and postpartum dry matter intake (DMI), body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), serum Ca concentrations and on subsequent milk production and composition. Treatments were in a $2{\times}3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement that included prepartum diet, dry period length (30 d dry, 30 d dry+estradiol cypionate (ECP), and 60 d dry), and prepartum and postpartum bST ($POSILAC^{(R)}$ 10.2 mg/d). No interaction of prepartum diet with dry period length or bST supplementation was detected for any measure evaluated either prepartum or postpartum. No significant effects of prepartum diet on prepartum DMI, BW or BCS were observed. Mean DMI during the first 28 d postpartum were similar for cows fed the cationic or anionic diets prepartum (25.5 vs. 26.1 kg/d). During postpartum wk 1 to 14, no differences in mean BW or BCS were detected due to prepartum diet fed but decreases for both groups were observed during the first 6 wk postpartum. No differences due to prepartum diet were observed for mean milk or 3.5% FCM yields or for milk composition during the first 10 wk of lactation. Similarly, mean milk yield of cows during the first 21 wk did not differ significantly due to prepartum diet fed (38.5 vs. 38.6 kg/d). Overall, cows fed the prepartum cationic or anionic diets had similar mean postpartum serum concentrations of Ca (9.34 vs. 9.35 mg/dl). Subsequent milk production, milk composition and concentrations of Ca did not differ. Importantly, the two prepartum diets were equally satisfactory in minimizing incidence of milk fever and in supporting initiation of lactation, irrespective of dry period length and supplemental ECP and bST.

  • This study was conducted to investigate vertical movement properties of water quality or chemical composition in three different forest stands (Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and Quercus spp. stands) in Gwangju-gun and Gyunggi-do. The results were as follows ; The pH range of precipitation was 4.62 ~ 6.72, and the average pH showed 5.74. The relationship of pH among throughfall, stemflow and precipitation showed difference of buffering capacity in tree species. According tree species, acided stemflow and alkalized stemflow had the characteristic value. In three stands, changes of the pH in early rain were larger than those of succeeding rain, except October 1998 and April 1999. Early rain influenced the cation in the acidity and concentration, but succeeding rain influenced the anion such as S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$, N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ , C $l^{[-10]}$ etc. And anion components exist with gas type and minute particles, as a result, succeeding rain influenced to chemical properties by the sustaining washout.

  • Lab-scale Electrodialysis(ED) system with different membranes combined with before or after pyroma process were carried out to remove nitrate from two pickling acid wastewater containing high concentrations of $NO_3\;^-$(${\approx}$150,000 mg/L) and F($({\approx}$ 160,000 mg/L) and some heavy metals(Fe, Ti, and Cr). The ED system before Pyroma process(Sample A) was not successful in $NO_3\;^-$ removal due to cation membrane fouling by the heavy metals, whereas, in the ED system after Pyroma process(Sample B), about 98% of nitrate was removed because of relatively low $NO_3\;^-$ concentration (about 30,000 mg/L) and no heavy metals. Mono-selective membranes(CIMS/ACS) in ED system have no selectivity for nitrate compared to divalent-selective membranes(CMX/AMX). The operation time for nitrate removal time decreased with increasing the applied voltage from 10V to 15V with no difference in the nitrate removal rate between both voltages. Nitrate adsorption of a strong-base anion exchange resin of $Cl\;^-$ type was also conducted. The Freundlich model($R^2$ > 0.996) was fitted better than Langmuir mode($R^2$ > 0.984) to the adsorption data. The maximum adsorption capacity ($Q^0$) was 492 mg/g for Sample A and 111 mg/g for Sample B due to the difference in initial nitrate concentrations between the two wastewater samples. In the regeneration of ion exchange resins, the nitrate removal rate in the pickling acid wastewater decreased as the adsorption step was repeated because certain amount of adsorbed $NO_3\;^-$ remained in the resins in spite of several desorption steps for regeneration. In conclusion, the optimum system configuration to treat pickling acid wastewater from stainless-steel industry is the multi-processes of the Pyroma-Electrodialysis-Ion exchange.
