  • Esterification is an important class of reactions in the preparation of perfumery and flavor chemicals, wherein homogeneous, solid acidic, and superacidic catalysts are normally used. Now, an efficient and selective protocol for protection of various functionalized alcohols employing carboxylic acids as protecting agents is realized through the catalytic mediation of simple heteropolyoxometallates. In this methodology, water is the only by-product and notably the aspect of effluent treatments does not arise. The advantages include the operational simplicity, recycle ability of the catalyst and mild reaction conditions. The present catalytic system may be a potential candidate not only for laboratory practice but also for commercial applications and offers an environmentally safer alternative to the existing processes.

  • A room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) derived from 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) consisting of tetrafluoroborate anion, 1-butyl-4-(4-sulfonylbutyl)-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane hydrogen sulfate tetrafluoroborate ($[C_4DABCOC_4SO_3H][BF_4][HSO_4]$) was synthesized and catalytically evaluated in the synthesis of 14-aryl-14H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthenes by cyclocondensation reaction of ${\beta}$-naphthol and aryl aldehydes. This novel RTIL with an acidic $SO_3H$ group showed high catalytic activity with good to excellent yields of the desired products in short reaction times. Moreover, the catalyst could be recovered and reused at least three times with only slight reduction in its catalytic activity.

  • Catalytic wet oxidation of ethylene glycol as refractory compound was studied in a batch slurry reactor using lwt% $Pt/A1_2O_3$, lwt% $Pt/TiO_2,\;Mn/CeO_2$(1:1) and 5wt% $Mn/Al_2O_3$. Experiments were conducted to investigate theeffects of temperature, initial ethylene glycol concentration, catalyst dosage and PH on the ethylene glycol decomposition. When compared with the uncatalyzed reaction, the use of catalysts could increase the rate of ethylene glycol decomposition. The lwt% $Pt/A1_2O_3$ catalyst was preferable to the other catalysts for the destructive oxidation of ethylene glycol. The reaction rate was first order with respect to initial concentration of ethylene glycol. In acidic condition the removal efficiency of ethylene glycol was good, but there was a significant leaching of platinum. Small amount of acetic acid, oxalic acid, masonic acid and formic acid as intermediates were detected during catalytic wet air oxidation of ethylene glycol.

  • We investigated the effect of derivatized phospholipid, P-pyridoxyl dipalmiuylphosphatidylethanolamine (P-pyr-DPPE), on the catalytic activity of purified porcine brain glutamate decarboxylase(GAD) which catalyzes the synthesis of GABA known as major inhibitory neurotransmitter in CNS. When the P-pyr-DPPE was incorporated into dipalmitdylphosphatidylcholine(DPPC) or phosphatidylserine(PS) vesicles, these vesicles enhanced the catalytic activity of GAD. P-pyr-DPPE also interacted with apoglutamate decarboxylase(apoGAD) and produced the free pyridoxal-5-phosphate(PLP) which is the natural cofactor of GAD. This result indicated that apoGAD catalyzed the cleavage reaction of the P-pyridoxyl moiety of the derivatized phopholipid to generate free PLP, and then free PLP bound to the apoGAD resulting in restroration of the catalytic activity of the enzyme.

  • In this paper, we analysed fatty acid methyl ester contents in the biodiesel which is produced from the newly developed biodiesel production equipment. The lard oil was used as the raw material through various experimental conditions. Thirty one experiments were conducted, which were based on the experimental conditions that designed by central composite design method. The effects of four independent variables, including reaction temperature, reaction time, oil to methanol molar ratio, and catalytic amount, were investigated at five levels using central composite design (CCD). Fatty acid methyl ester content was chosen dependent variable. Although the results of analysis of the surface with an irregular surface geometry showed that the biodiesel was partially impure after the reaction due to the natural characteristics of the lard oil as the raw material, we could confirm the relationship between them from the facts that the production amount of fatty acid methyl ester changes according to reaction temperature, reaction time, oil to methanol molar ratio, and catalytic amount.

  • A fluidized bed reactor is made with quartz. The size of FBR is 0.055 m I.D. and 1.0 m in height. The FBR was employed for the thermocatalytic decomposition of propane to produce hydrogen without $CO_{2}$. The fluidized bed was proposed for the continuous withdraw of product carbons from the reactor. Carbon black DCC-N330 is used to decompose the propane gas. The propane decomposition reaction over carbon black catalyst in a fluidized bed reactor was carried out the temperature range of 600 ${\sim}$ 800 $^{\circ}C$, propane gas velocity of 1.0 ${\sim}$ 4.0$U_{mf}$($1U_{mf}$ = 0.61cm/s) and the catalyst loading of 100 ${\sim}$ 200g. Production of $H_{2}$ such as other reaction temperature, gas velocity, catalytic loading on the reaction rates was investigated. The carbon depositied on the catalyst surface was observed by FE-SEM. The particle size of the carbon black was observed by Particle size analyzer. Resulting production in the experiment was not only hydrogen but also several by-products such as methane, ethylene, ethane, and propylene.

  • The effect of pressure on the catalytic properties of glutamate racemase from Aquifex pyrophilus, an extremophilic bacterium, was investigated. The activation volume for the overall reaction $({\Delta}V^{\neq})$ and catalysis $({{Delta}V_{cat}}^{\neq})$ was -96.97 ml/mol and 4.97 ml/mol, respectively, while the reaction volume for the substrate binding (${\Delta}V_{K_m^-1}$) was -101.94 ml/mol. The large negative ${\Delta}V^{\neq}$ for the overall reaction indicated that the pressurization of glutamate racemase resulted in enhanced catalytic efficiencies. In addition, this value was also due to the large negative ${Delta}V_{K_m^-1}$ for the substrate binding. The negative value of ${Delta}V_{K_m^-1}$ implied that the conformational changes in the enzyme molecule occurred during the substrate binding process, thereby increasing the degree of hydration. The small value of ${{Delta}V_{cat}}^{\neq}$suggested that the pressure did not affect the glutamate racemase catalysis after the substrate binding.

  • In situ electrical conductivity measurements on $V_2O_5WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts were carried out at between 100 and $300^{\circ}C$ under pure oxygen, NO and $NH_3$ to investigate the reaction mechanism for ammonia SCR (selective catalytic reduction) de NOX. The electrical conductivity of catalysts changed irregularly with supply of NO. It was, however, found that the electrical conductivity change with ammonia supply was regular and the increase of electrical conductivity was mainly caused by reduction of the labile surface oxygen. The electrical conductivity change of catalysts showed close relationship with the conversion rate of NOx. Variation of conversion rate in atmosphere without gaseous oxygen also showed that labile lattice oxygen is indispensable in the initial stage of the de NOx reaction. These results suggest that liable lattice oxygen acts decisive role in the de NOx mechanism. They also support that de NOx reaction occurs through the Eley?Rideal type mechanism. The amount of labile oxygen can be estimated from the measurement of electrical conductivity change for catalysts with ammonia supply. This suggests that measurement of the change can be used as a measure of the de NOx performance.
