Anode off-gas of high temperature fuel cells such as MCFC contains a significant amount of combustible components like hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane according to fuel utilization ratio of the fuel cell stack. Thus, it is important to fully burn anode off-gas and utilize the generated heat in order to increase system efficiency and reduce emissions as well. In the present study, 25 kW catalytic combustor has been developed for the application to a load-following 300kW MCFC system. Mixing and combustion characteristics have been experimentally investigated with the catalytic combustor. Since the performance of catalytic combustor directly depends on the combustion catalyst, this study has been focused on the experimental investigation on the combustion characteristics of multiple catalysts having different structures and compositions. Results show that the exhaust emissions are highly dependent on the catalyst loading and the ratio of catalytic components. Test results at load-following conditions are also shown in the present study.
The characteristics of the catalytically supported combustion with Pd and Pd/Pt based catalyst using the bench-scaled high pressure combustor have been investigated up to 5atm. This study aimed to investigate combustion characteristics of the stable flame attached to the exit of catalyst bed and NOx emissions with respect to the position of axial and radial direction in the combustor. NOx emissions were increased along the axial distance after the catalyst bed exit and radially decreased from the center to the wall of the combustor. At the higher pressure, the NOx emission decreased slightly due to the lower flame temperature in the combustor at the high pressure.
Some catalytic reactors for industrial/generation gas turbines were reviewed and investigated to understand the current status and future prospect for ultra low NOx catalytic gas turbine combustor. Catalytic reactor which was applied to 1${\sim}$10MW class gas turbine has achieved the ultra low emission corresponding to less than 3ppm NOx and 10ppm CO. But the durability and sizing flexibility of catalyst is needed to improve the catalyst performance for commercial gas turbine operation.
Numerical simulations of high temperature catalytic combustion have been performed for the application to a gas turbine combustor. Dependences of inlet temperature and pressure on the distributions of temperature and species concentrations were investigated using plug flow model with detailed homogeneous and heterogeneous chemistries of methane-air mixtures. Honeycomb typecombustor deposited with Pt catalyst of 100mm in length and 26mm in diameter is used. The results show that rapid increase of temperature profile occurs earlier with the increase of inlet temperature and the decrease of inlet pressure. The condition which catalytic combustion is stabilized exists at certain range of inlet temperature and pressure. The state of catalytic combustion is also confirmed by the distributions of species concentration.
Effect of flow uniformity on the reaction characteristics of a catalytic combustor for high temperature fuel cell system has been experimentally investigated in the present study. One of the most important factor in designing catalytic combustion is to avoid hot spot in catalysts. In this regard, it is very important to secure flow uniformity of combustor inlet. A couple of perforated plates were applied at the front of catalyst region as flow uniformity device with minimal pressure drop. Results show that the velocity and temperature profile became more uniform when applying the flow uniformity device. CO and $CH_4$ emissions at the combustor exit were decreased and the average exit temperature was slightly increased with the flow uniformity device.
The aim of this study is to improve the durability performance of catalysts for a catalytic combustor and to obtain operating conditions for stable combustion of the catalytic combustor. It was attempted to improve the durability of the catalysts by adding a promoter in order to reduce the cost of replacing Pt catalyst while maintaining stability. The main catalyst used in the study was Pt and the promoters were Ni and La. Pure Pt3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst without promoter was promoted to fast sintering states under harsh conditions and catalytic combustion was turned off, whereas the catalysts added La, Ni as promoter were showed relatively slow sintering states. It can be concluded that the promoter La, Ni effectively contributes to the improvement of the durability of the Pt catalyst, and it is possible to get longer durability and more stable duration than the conventional catalytic combustor.
The combustion characteristics of the hybrid catalytic(catalytic+thermal) combustor with a lean methane-air mixture on platinum catalyst were investigated numerically using a 2-D boundary layer model with detailed homogeneous and heterogeneous chemistries. for the more accurate calculations, the actual surface site density of monolith coated with platinum was decided by the comparison with experimental data. It was found that the homogeneous reactions in the monolith had little effect on the change of temperature profile, methane conversion rate and light off location. However, the radicals such as OH and CO were produced rapidly at exit by homogeneous reactions. The effect of operation conditions such as equivalence ratio, temperature, velocity, pressure and diameter of the monolith channel at the entrance were studied. In thermal combustor, the production of N$_2$O was more dominant than that of NO due to the relative importance of the reaction N$_2$+O(+M)→N$_2$O(+M). Finally the productions of CO and NOx by amount of methane addition were studied.
Catalytic combustion is the cleanest emissions technology that has been demonstrated for the gas turbine. It has been a primary part of the research portfolio for the Combustor and Heat Transfer Technology Group at Cranfield University since 1989. The Paper describes the background to studies in the Group, their evolution and presents some results for specific study areas and themes.
The catalytic heat exchanger was designed which employs the regenerative preheating system of combustion air. The characteristics of the catalytic heat exchanger have been experimentally studied at the various operating parameters. The results showed that the mixture velocity did not affect significantly the performance of catalytic combustor whereas the preheating temperature of combustion air affected significantly the conversion rate. The complete conversion was achieved in the catalyzed honeycomb at a preheating temperature of $370-390^{\circ}C$, a mixture velocity of 0.53 $^{\sim}$ 0.75 m/s and an equivalence ratio of 0.19 $^{\sim}$ 0.27. The heat exchange efficiency of the catalytic heat exchanger appeared to be about 75 % when the air of room temperature was used as a working fluid. The results showed that both the heat balance of the system and the mixture conditions determine its stable catalytic combustion.
An experimental study on the design of a catalytic combustor for 1.6 kW MCFC system has been performed. The roles of the catalytic combustor are to completely burn anode off-gas and to supply sufficient $CO_2$ to cathode channels. In order to avoid hot spot or fuel slippage, flow uniformity at the catalyst inlet was achieved by installing two crossing perforated plates between the catalyst and the mixing chamber with minimal pressure drop. A Pd/Ce/Ni-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was used for complete combustion of the off-gas at GHSV=36,000.
