Catalytic combustion is the environmental-friendly technology, which has been applied to a variety of areas for industrial and domestic use in recent years. Accordingly, this study performed the development of the catalytic manufacturing technology for the high temperature and of the catalytic combustor in priority, which were aimed to be applied to a commercialized boiler. Paliadium(Pd) of a noble metal was used as a catalyst for the high temperature and supported on alumina($Al_[2}O_{3}$) and zirconia($ZrO_{2}$) in constant weight ratio. Activity of Pd catalysts is compared and analyzed in the catalytic combustion of natural gas. The ratio of $Pd/Al_{2}O_{3}=4$ was found to be better than any other weight ratios in activity and durability. The performance examination of catalysts and of combustion through the plate-type combustor made it possible to be developed the cylindrical-type combustor which has increased combustion area. Catalytic combustion boiler of 25,000 kcal/hr class was also developed, which had the optimum combustion condition at the nozzle of 5.95mm and the orifice of 21mm. This condition was determined through the performance experiments of catalytic combustion boiler to which the cylindrical-type catalytic combustor was applied.

Methane combustion over perovskite-type oxides prepared using the malic acid method was investigated. To enhance the catalytic activity, the perovskite oxides were modified by the substitution of metal into their A or B site. In addition, the reaction conditions, such as the temperature, space velocity, and partial pressure of the methane were varied to understand their effect on the catalytic performance. With the LaCoO3-type catalyst, the partial substitution of Sr or Ba into site A enhanced the catalytic activity in the methane combustion. With the LaBO3(B=Co, Fe, Mn, Cu)-type catalyst, the catalytic activities were exhibited in the order of Co>Fe Mn>Cu. Futhermore, the partial substitution of Co into site B enhanced the catalytic activity, whereas an excess amount of Co decreased the activity. The surface area and catalytic activity of the perovskite catalysts prepared using the malic acid method showed higher values than those prepared using the solid reaction method. The catalytic activity was enhanced with decreased methane concentration and with a decrease in the space velocity.
Catalytic Combustion used to be applied to specific conditions because of the characteristics different from flame combustion. However, many researches are focused on widening the applicant range of catalytic combustion with the competences of catalytic combustion. The development of many catalytic combustion appliances is one of the trials to overcome the restrictions of reaction and maximize the merits. In this research, past developments of appliances are depicted and new conceptual system will be introduced - sequential system. Sequential catalytic combustion system is composed of units - existing catalytic heat exchangers. This system is performed with parallel in composition and serially in operation. First, the burden of the preheating can be dramatically reduced. Second, stable operation control is expected. Lastly, Capacity expansion is flexible.
The heat exchanger using the catalytic combustion can be applied to petrochemical processes and to VOC incineration facilities. In this work, the experiment for a new fin typed catalytic heat exchanger was conducted. Catalysts for the heat exchanger were determined by testing their catalytic activities over LPG in a micro-reactor. Based on experimental results of the fin typed catalytic heat exchanger, a small scaled heat exchange system was made to test its feasibility as a reboiler used in petrochemical processes. The results showed that the catalytic heat exchanger could combust off-gases effectively and at the same time could recover completely heat produced by catalytic combustion.
A catalytic burner was studied which can be used as a heater operated in medium temperature. Noble metal catalysts (Pd/NiO) were used, which were supported on alumina wash coated honeycomb. The maximum heat-resisting temperature of the catalyst is about 900.deg. C. Combustion efficiency of the catalytic burner reached more than 99.5 % at the excess air ratio above 1.25.NOx emissions were lower than 1.0 ppm at all operation conditions. The operation condition for a stable catalytic combustion was obtained. It was dependent on the catalyst thickness. The 30 mm thick catalyst showed the widest stable catalytic combustion region. Stable catalytic combustion region of 30 mm thick catalyst was the operation condition of excess air ratio 1.25 - 1.75 and heat flux 7 - 14 kcal/h center dot cm$^{2}$.
Self-catalytic behavior of combustion-synthesized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is evaluated using a double-faced wall stagnation flow burner with a CNT-deposited stainless steel plate wall. CNT formation is observed using field-emission scanning and transmission electron microscopies and Raman spectroscopy. A self-catalytic behavior of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) shows the enhanced ratio of channel diameter to tube wall thickness and the enhanced intensity ratio of G-band to D-band in Raman spectroscopy, implying that the quality of metal-catalytic, flame-synthesized MWCNTs can be much improved via a CNT self-catalytic flame-synthesis process. Thus, using a DWSF burner through the self-catalytic process has potential in mass production of CNTs having much improved quality.
Catalytic combustion known as one of the traditional oxidation methods of VOC gas is restricted to its applicable fields because of its reaction characteristics. But recently innovative improvement of catalytic endurance makes its applicable range broader from MEMs to industrial power generation. Therefore, control technologies based on the catalytic combustion characteristics are researched and developed dynamically. Especially, the stable control of catalytic combustion is an essential factor in a view of maximizing its efficiency. In this research, the fuel equivalence ratio and the preheating temperature of mixture gas is controlled by catalytic combustion system enhanced in heat transfer with high temperature heat exchanger. As a result, the combustion characteristics of system was investigated, and both passive and active control type were compared and analyzed.
The catalytic heat exchanger, which integrates two functions of heat generation and heat exchange into one equipment, was designed and its characteristics were investigated by experiments. The surface of the fin tube was deposited with Pd catalyst. The conversion of the mixture in the catalytic heat exchanger was more significantly affected by the inlet velocity of the mixture than by the inlet temperature and equivalence ratio of the mixture. It was found that the catalytic surface area of the fin tubes should be sufficiently increased to make the combustion intensity of the catalytic heat exchanger as high as possible. Results showed that the fin tubes, placed in the triangularly staggered form, should be adjusted so that the mixture flows uniformly over all the catalytic fin surfaces.
It was reported that oxidative etching of graphene occurs at about $450-550^{\circ}C$ under oxygen atmosphere. We found catalytic breakdown of graphene by Au on the SiOx surface. This catalytic process was investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy at 4D PES beamline in PAL. Spectrosopic results suggest that the destruction of graphene is initiated by catalytic interaction between the oxidized gold and carbons in vacancy defects of graphene.
Some catalytic reactors for industrial/generation gas turbines were reviewed and investigated to understand the current status and future prospect for ultra low NOx catalytic gas turbine combustor. Catalytic reactor which was applied to 1${\sim}$10MW class gas turbine has achieved the ultra low emission corresponding to less than 3ppm NOx and 10ppm CO. But the durability and sizing flexibility of catalyst is needed to improve the catalyst performance for commercial gas turbine operation.
