  • The quality of the casting process generates the largest source of defects in the manufacturing process, so its management is a key factor in productivity and quality evaluation. Based on the results of factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis with process data, this study aims to optimize the machine learning model to reduce the defect rate and verify the data suitability for smart factories.

  • Chuncheon National Museum currently own a bronze Buddhist gong that was discovered in 1987 at the Sudasa Temple site of in Suhangri, Pyeongchang. Significantly, showing many casting defects and areas where was repaired, the Gong offered crucial information about the casting technique. To better understand the production technique, scientific analysis was conducted on various aspects of the gong, including its materials, moulds, chaplets, and defects. Composition analysis revealed that the gong was composed primarily of copper 71.6wt%, tin 18.2wt%, and lead 7.2wt%, along with about 1wt% of both arsenic and antimony. The lead content of the chaplets was higher than that of the gong, and the lead content was the highest in the solder, which was used to fill holes after casting. Surface analysis, based on the parting line, indicated that the gong was most likely produced with the sand casting process. Radiography and close examination of the surface disclosed various casting defects e.g., Cold Shut, Surface Folds, Misrun, and Blowholes Adjacent to Chaplets and their possible causes. The casting defects of a few holes were filled with soft solder.

  • Magnesium alloys usage has been increased every year owing to its lightness, damping capacity, and EMI shielding, etc. In case of magnesium, it is mainly produced by diecasting due to high fluidity of melts. But, casting defect occurs many times because of low heat capacity of the magnesium. Therefore, wrought products can be applied for defect-free and mechanical properties. but it is insufficient in market share because of crystalline structure. The domestic market of wrought magnesium products are not revitalized compare to advanced countries. Accordingly we are going to forecast a domestic market of wrought products through searching the present of korean magnesium industry.

  • The high-pressure die-casting is one of the most effective methods to produce a large amount of products in short cycle time. This process, however, has a problem that the gas porosity defect appears easily. The generation of gas porosity is known mainly due to the air entrapment during the injection stage. Most of numerical simulations for the molten metal flow pattern observations have done in the treating of one phase fluid flow but the gas-liquid interface is essentially multi- phase phenomenon. In this paper, the two-phase fluid flow numerical simulation methods have been adapted to predict the gas porosity generations in the molten metal. The accuracy and the usefulness of the new simulation module have been emphasized and verified through some comparison experiments.

  • Solidification simulation of gray cast iron sheave product was conducted with the consideration of graphite precipitation during solidification, and of casting processes such as post-inoculation method, treatment and rate, the result of which was aimed to be adopted in the field. In risering design(I), shrinkage cavities were predicted to occur in the part below the risers and center part of the product. While the former defect was considered to be due to the solidification behaviour of riser neck, the latter was due to the feeding channel. In design(II), the length of the riser neck was reduced and one top open riser was attached in the center of the product to prevent the formation of shrinkage cavities, whereby defect-free product was produced.

  • 7000 series Al alloy with good mechanical properties has been focused with tendency to reduce the components weight of aircraft and automobile. However, it is difficult to manufacture a sound extruded product because of segregation, grain growth, casting defect, surface defect, decreasing extrudability and so on. The objective of this study is to manufacture a new 7000 al alloy more than the extrudability of A7N01 and A7003 through controlling the weight (%) Mg, Zn, Si. Hot extrusion experiments on the axisymmetric rod are performed in 500℃ and also performed analysis of the same process using unmerical analysis method, a coupled rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method. Extrusion limit diagram was obtained for the developed alloy by FE-simulation in order to define the relationship of extrusion speed and initial billet temperature.

  • A die-casting junction method is usually used to manufacture the tub of an IH(induction heating) jar. If there is a very small air bubble in the junction area, the thermal conductivity is deteriorated and local overheat occurs. Such problem brings serious inferiority of the IH jar. In this paper, we propose a new method to detect such defect with simply measured thermal data. Thermal distribution of preheated tubs is obtained by scanning with infrared thermal sensors and analyzed with the statistic pattern recognition method. By defining the characteristic feature as the temperature difference between sensors and using ellipsoid function as decision boundary, a supervised learning method of genetic algorithm is proposed to obtain the required parpameters. After applying the proposed method to experiment, we have proved that the rate of recognition is high even for a small number of data set.

  • This study was conducted to develop technology that can detect stomatal defects inside nonferrous metal products that may occur during die casting processes. Through this research, we intend to detect possible pores in the products in advance, block the distribution of defective products, and contribute to reducing possible losses due to damage to distributed products.

  • In general, internal defects, such as shrinkage in casting, cause stress concentration and can be a starting point for cracks. Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of internal defects on the mechanical properties including the impact behavior. This study aim is to evaluate the effects of internal casting defects on the impact performance of Al-alloy castings. Both an experimental method and computational analysis were used to achieve the research objective. The internal defects in the casting were scanned using an industrial CT scanner, and their shape was simplified using ellipsoidal primitives for impact analysis. The good agreement between the experimental and computer simulation results verified the reliability of the proposed computational method for the FEA of casting components with internal defects.

  • Purpose: Ultrasonic scalers have been widely used for removing biofilm which is considered as major etiologic factor of periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of working parameters of piezoeletric ultrasonic scaler with scaler tip (No. 1 tip) on casting gold alloy removal. Methods: Type III dental casting gold alloy (Firmilay$^{circledR}$, Jelenko Inc, CA, USA) was used as substitute for tooth substance. Piezoeletric ultrasonic scaler and No.1 scaler tip (P-Max$^{circledR}$, Satelec, France) were selected. The selected working parameters were mode (P mode, S mode), power setting (2, 4, 8) and lateral force (0.5 N, 1.0 N, 2.0 N). The effect of working parameters was evaluated in terms of ablation depth, ablation width and ablation area. Results: Mode influenced ablation depth and ablation area. Power also influenced ablation depth and ablation area. Especially, Power 2 and power 8 showed statistically significant difference. Lateral force had influence on ablation width, and 0.5 N resulted significant increase compared with 1.0 N and 2.0 N. Ablation depth was influenced by mode, power and lateral force and defect width was influenced by lateral force. Ablation area was influenced by mode and power. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the use of piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler with No. 1 scaler tip in S mode and high power may result in significant loss of tooth substance.
