  • This study analyzes the optimal location of gas detectors through the gas dispersion in a cargo compressor room of a 174K LNG carrier equipped with high-pressure cargo handling equipment; in addition, we propose a reasonable method for determining the safety regulations specified in the new International Code of the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC). To conduct an LNG gas dispersion simulation in the cargo compressor room-equipped with an ME-GI engine-of a 174 K LNG carrier, the geometry of the room as well as the equipment and piping, are designed using the same 3D size at a 1-to-1 scale. Scenarios for a gas leak were examined under high pressure of 305 bar and low pressure of 1 bar. The pinhole sizes for high pressure are 4.5, 5.0, and 5.6mm, and for low pressure are 100 and 140 mm. The results demonstrate that the cargo compressor room will not pose a serious risk with respect to the flammable gas concentration as verified by a ventilation assessment for a 5.6 mm pinhole for a high-pressure leak under gas rupture conditions, and a low-pressure leak of 100 and 140 mm with different pinhole sizes. However, it was confirmed that the actual location of the gas detection sensors in a cargo compressor room, according to the new IGC code, should be moved to other points, and an analysis of the virtual monitor points through a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation.

  • A basic access method using for IEEE 802.11a wireless LANs is the DCF method that is based on the CSMA/CA. But, Since IEEE 802.11 MAC layer uses original backoff algorithm (Exponential backoff method), when collision occurs, the size of contention windows increases the double size. Hence, packet transmission delay time increases and efficiency is decreased by original backoff scheme. In this paper, we have analyzed TCP packet transmission time of IEEE 802.11 MAC DCF protocol for wireless LANs using a proposed enhanced backoff algorithm. From the results, in OFDM/quadrature phase shift keying channel (QPSK), we can achieve that the transmission time in wireless channel decreases as the TCP packet size increases and based on the data collected, we can infer the correlation between TCP packet size and total message transmission time, allowing for an inference of the optimal packet size in the TCP layer.

  • During the phloem development from parenchyma cells in a suspension culture of Streptanthus induced sucrose carrier and glucose carrier disappeared. Sieve element area and sieve pore induced suspension culture of Streptanthus were formed almost at the last period of the synthesis of sieve endoplasmic reticulum (SER) and p-protein. The new synthesized cell wall begann to digeste only after the new cell wall was surrounded by SER. The digested region of the cell wall and the formed region of sieve pore were regular comparatively. The completed sieve pore was an oval form, and the outer portion of sieve pore varied, ca 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$~1.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in longitudinal, 0.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$~1.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in tangential, and the inner size of sieve pore was irregular form of a star-like shape. The number of sieve pore between sieve cells was ca 2~7 per ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$ and the sieve pore wall with callose was 0.05 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$~0.07 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness. The energy for the formation of sieve element area and sieve pore might be supplied by mitochondria near the new cell wall and the role of SER remains to be illucidated.

  • Numerous prior studies have delineated the size distribution of noncohesive sediment in suspension, focusing on mean size and standard deviation. However, suspensions comprise a heterogeneous mixture of sediment particles of varying sizes. The transport dynamics of suspended sediment in turbulent flow are intimately tied to settling velocities calculated based on size and density. Consequently, understanding the grain size distribution becomes paramount in comprehending sediment transport phenomena for noncohesive sediment. This study aims to introduce a straightforward modeling approach for simulating the grain size distribution of suspended sediment amidst turbulence. Leveraging insights into the contrast between cohesive and noncohesive sediment, we have meticulously revised a stochastic flocculation model originally designed for cohesive sediment to aptly simulate the grain size distribution of noncohesive sediment in suspension. The efficacy of our approach is corroborated through a meticulous comparison between experimental data and the grain size distribution simulated by our newly proposed model. Through numerical simulations, we unveil that the modulation of grain size distribution of suspended sediment is contingent upon the sediment transport capacity of the carrier fluid. Hence, we deduce that our simplified approach to simulating the grain size distribution of suspended sediment, integrated with a sediment transport model, serves as a robust framework for elucidating the pivotal bulk properties of sediment transport.

  • Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) nanoparticles were synthesized in oil/water miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of low amount of hexadecane as a cosurfactant. The nanoparticles were tested to apply as a drug carrier. The shape of nanoparticles was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the average particle size and size distribution were examined by particle size analyzer. Inclusion of antibiotic drugs into the nanoparticles was confirmed by CHO, C=O, and OH peak of FT-IR. Size of the nanoparticles were adjusted between 80∼300 nm by changing the homogenization rate and amount of cosurfactant and surfactant. The monomer droplets prepared by miniemulsion method using a cosurfactant were homogeneous and stable compared with those prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization. This might be occurred due to the prevention of Ostwald ripening and coalescence between droplets by using hexadecane as a cosurfactant.

  • A new technique for control of size and shape of flame-made particles is Introduced. The characteristic sintering time can be controlled Independently of collision time by heating the particles with irradiation of laser because the sintering time strongly depends on temperature. A coflow oxy-hydrogen diffusion flame burner was used for $SiCl_4$ conversion to silica particle. Nanometer sized aggregates irradiated by a high power CW $CO_2$ laser beam were rapidly heated up to high temperatures and then were sintered to approach volume-equivalent spheres. The sphere collides much slower than the aggregate, which results in reduction of sizes of particles maintaining spherical shape. Light scattering of Ar ion laser and TEM observation using a local sampling device were used to confirm the above effects. When the $CO_2$ laser was irradiated at low position from the burner surface, particle generation due to gas absorption of laser beam occurred and thus scattering intensity increased with $CO_2$ laser power. At high irradiation position, scattering intensity decreased with $CO_2$ laser power and TEM image showed a clear mark of evaporation and recondensation of particles for high $CO_2$ laser power. When the laser was irradiated between the above two positions where small aggregates exist, average size of spherical particles obviously decreased to 58% of those without $CO_2$ laser irradiation with the spherical shape. Even for increased carrier gas flow rate by a factor of three, TEM photograph also revealed considerable reduction of particle size.

  • [ $Co_3O_4$ ] particles with non-aggregation characteristics were prepared by various conditions such as preparation temperature, flow rate of carrier gas, and concentration of spray solution using spray pyrolysis. The morphology and crystallinity of the preformed particles obtained by spray pyrolysis at various conditions affected the mean size and morphology of the post-treated $Co_3O_4$ particles. The preformed particles with hollow and porous morphology obtained from spray solution with citric acid and ethylene glycol turned to $Co_3O_4$ particles with nano size, regular morphology and non-aggregation characteristics after post-treatment at $800^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the preformed particles obtained by the preparation conditions of short residence time of particles inside hot wall reactor and high reactor temperature turned to $Co_3O_4$ particles with aggregated morphology after post-treatment. The mean crystallite size and particle size of the $Co_3O_4$ particles prepared from optimum preparation conditions were 47 nm and 210 nm at post-treatment temperature of $800^{\circ}C$.

  • For the preliminary stages of ship design it is necessary to develop a basic design, which specifies the main particulars of the vessel. based on the requirements given by the owner. An efficient design enables the shipyard to make a rough estimate of the construction costs and to put forward a favourable quote during the call for tenders. The parametric determination of the main particulars of the vessel involves the application of empirical formulae. These formulae have been created after detailed tests and research by maritime research institutions and researchers had been carried out. Here, the design of a medium sized Bulk Carrier (26000t dwt) with a service speed of 17 knots for carrying rice and rock phosphate has been illustrated. Medium sized Bulk Carriers (25,000t dwt - 50,000t dwt) are in steady demand among small shipping companies. They have a size advantage, in that port size restrictions do not affect their design tremendously. Nevertheless, structurally. they are one of the most difficult to build. During design, the rules of the maritime regulatory bodies were strictly adhered to.

  • Objective: To explore effects of paclitaxel-loaded poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) particles on the viability of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) HepG2 cells. Materials and Methods: The viability of HepG2 cells was assessed using MTT under different concentrations of prepared paclitaxel-loaded particles and paclitaxel (6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L), and apoptosis was analyzed using Hochest33342/Annexin V-FITC/PI combined with an IN Cell Analyzer 2000. Results: Paxlitaxel-loaded nanoparticles were characterized by narrow particle size distribution (158.6 nm average particle size). The survival rate of HepG2 cells exposed to paclitaxel-loaded PLGA particles decreased with the increase of concentration and time period (P<0.01 or P<0.05), the dose- and time-dependence indicating sustained release (P<0.05). Moreover, apoptosis of HepG2 cells was induced, again with an obvious dose- and time-effect relationship (P<0.05). Conclusions: Paclitaxel-loaded PLGA particles can inhibit the proliferation and induce the apoptosis of HCC HepG2 cells. This new-type of paclitaxel carrier body is easily made and has low cost, good nanoparticle characterization and sustained release. Hence, paclitaxel-loaded PLGA particles deserve to be widely popularized in the clinic.

  • Solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN) system has been attracted increasing attention during last few years as a potential drug delivery carrier However, the SLN have disadvantage of low encapsulation efficiency for hydrophilic drug. In this study, for increase it's encapsulation efficiency, we prepared the $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ L100-55 (eudragit) coated SLN(E-SLN) based on solvent evaporation method and melt dispersion technique, and analyzed their physicochemical properties in terms of particle size, morphology, and encapsulation efficiency. As a result, they have a ${\pm}150$ nm particle size, spherical shape, and $10^{\sim}25$ % loading efficiency. SLN consists of coconut oil as core material, ascorbic acid and okyong-san as hydrophilic drug.
