This study is a review of the early postoperative results in fifteen patients who diagnosed funnel chest and underwent the corrective surgical procedure by the sternal turnover[STO] or the sternocostal elevation[SCE] between January 1988 and February 1990. Thirteen among fifteen patients were male. Early eight patients were corrected by the STO and late seven patients by the SCE. Cosmetic result was excellent in one, fair in five, poor in two patients who received the STO and excellent in all patients corrected by the SCE. This unfavorable postoperative result in the STO group was due to the protrusion of inverted xiphisternal joint, the depression along the rejoined costal cartilages and forward tilting of the distal sternum. The lower vertebral indices measured on the lateral chest film were improved postoperatively from 0.42\ulcorner0.08 to 0.30\ulcorner0.05 in the STO group and from 0.31\ulcorner0.05 to 0.24\ulcorner0.03 in the SCE group. There was significant improvement in lower vertebral index in both groups, but it was difficult to compare the postoperative improvement between groups due to the different preoperative status. In the SCE group, the funnel index and the degree of depression measured on the computed tomography were significantly improved from 5.29\ulcorner1.72 and 3.11\ulcorner0.71 to 2.77\ulcorner0.46 and 1.63\ulcorner0.19[P<0.05], but there was no significant change in the degree of flatness postoperatively. This results suggest that sternocostal elevation is more cosmetic procedure than sternal turnover in children and in young adolescents whose funnel index measured on the computed tomography is low.
As the elderly population has increased in recent years in Korea chronic degenerative diseases prevalent in the aged have garnered attention in relation to food behavior. In general, dietary intakes of elderly Koreans were inadequate in quality as well as in quantity. Especially, intakes of Ca, vitamin A, and riboflavin along with total energy were insufficient. They tended to consume high carbohydrate and low fat energy rates which may be resulted from long standing vegetable-based flood patterns. Relationships between dietary intakes and indices of cardiovascular diseases revealed that blood pressures and serum lipids patterns tended to be poor in individuals having high abdominal fat accumulations which seemed to be related with dietary consumption of high carbohydrate and insufficient intake of many nutrients. These results suggested that a nutritionally balanced diet including animal sources floods is needed in order to prevent an abdominal obesity and cardiovascular diseases. The bone health status of the Korean elderly appeared poor. It was more serious in women recording a higher prevalence rate of osteopenia and osteoporosis than in men. There were strong associations between dietary factors and bone health status. Bone mineral density was found to be higher with higher intakes of protein energy rate, the total amount of feeds, and many nutrients including Ca and p, indicating that a good quality diet is essential in maintaining healthy bone status in later life. mental health condition of the elderly as measured by cognitive function and the degree of depression was also inadequate and had strong association with dietary consumption. The positive results were obtained in individuals having an adequate dict. Therefore, it could be summarized that the physical as well as mental health in elderly Koreans are highly related with their dietary patterns. Thus, the older adults need te consume nutritionally well balanced diet in sufficient amount, which contains various flood items including significant amounts of animal source floods in a daily diet in order to maintain healthy condition.
Purpose: This study was undertaken to explore sex differences in the risk markers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and psychosocial factors and the relationships among these variables for the community-residing adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 114 participants consisting of 65 men aged 42.85 years old and 49 women aged 46.86 years old. Participants were selected by a convenient sampling of at community cultural centers and churches. They completed a structured questionnaire including demographic characteristics, physiologic risk markers of CVD; lifestyle factors; and depression, social support, and stress. Results: The male participants showed significantly higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures than their counterparts. Significantly higher percent of women were currently non-smokers, and practiced moderate alcohol intake, physical activity, and low fat diet. Among women, the higher the scores of depression and stress were and the lower that of the social support was, the higher blood pressure, waist circumference and BMI were. Among men, those who were less depressed and with higher scores of social support had more physical activity. Conclusion: The findings suggest further studies to explore sex differences of CVD risk markers and psychosocial factors, and their relationships in a larger sample, and to find the mechanism underlying these differences with a prospective design.
Thirteen sternocosal elevations for pectus excavatum were performed on twelve patients between Jan 1989 and Sep. 1991. Eleven among the twleve patients were male. The subjects ranged in age from 2 years to 20 years, with a mean age of 8.33 years[SD=4.80 years], Eleven patients were below 15 years. The early postoperative evaluation by Humphreys` criteria except keloid formation was excellent in all the patients. The lower vertebral index[LVI], configuration index[CI], and upper vertebral index[UVI] were measured on the lateral chest roentgenogram. The LVI and CI improved significantly from 0.31$\pm$0.06 and 1.14$\pm$0.06 preoperatively to 0.25$\pm$0.03 and 0.78$\pm$1.10 postoperatively. The degrees of depression, flatness, and asymmetry and funnel index were measured at the most deformed portion on the computed tomgram performed pre- and postoperatively. The degrees of depression and funnel index improved significantly from 3.32$\pm$0.73 and 5.77$\pm$1. 54 preoperatively to 1.85$\pm$0.14 and 2.96$\pm$0.43 postoperatively, There was no significant change in the degree of flatness however, Six postoperative morbidities occurred in five patients Three were superficial wound infection, two hemopneumothorax, and one reoeration, Reoperation was performed due to forward displacement of the distal sternum below the posterior sternotomy, The findings of this study suggest that the sternocostal elevation is an excellent primary method for the pectus excavatum of children and young adolescents.
This study was conducted to identify the mental health and quality of life of cardiovascular disease patients by their activities restriction through the second analysis of the 7th KNHANES collected from 2016 to 2018. The subjects of this study were 521 adults with angina or myocardial infarction who had no missing variables among 24,269 subjects. The difference between mental health and quality of life according to the activity restriction was analyzed by Chi-square method and the effect of mental health and quality of life by activity restriction by Logistic regression method using the SAS 9.4 version. The results of the analysis showed that the stress level, the depression for the last two weeks and suicide thought level was high when there was activity restriction, which had a significant effect on mental health. Mobility, selfcare and usual activities were disrupted, and pain/inconvenience and anxiety/depression increased when there was activity restriction, which also showed a significant effect on quality of life. Therefore, it is suggested that the development and operation of effective physical activity promotion program to minimize activity restriction is necessary to improve mental health and quality of life of cardiovascular patients.

Objective: This study reports the effect of Korean traditional medicine on persistent chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Methods: The patient was treated with Korean traditional medicine that included acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine. The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated by the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (QLQ-C30), the Quality of Life Questionnaire Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (QLQ-CIPN20), the Medicinae Doctor Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI), and a numeral rating scale (NRS). We also used the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to evaluate the patient's mood change after relieving the paresthesia. Results: After treatment, the symptoms were improved. Paresthesia decreased 80%p after Korean medicine treatment. Conclusions: According to this study, Korean traditional medicine can be an effective treatment for paresthesia in patients suffering from CIPN over 2 years.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify influencing factors of metabolic index and cardiovascular risk factors, on depressive and non-depressive groups, in vulnerable diabetic elderly women. Methods: Participants were 137 vulnerable diabetic elderly women, using health centers in D city. Data were collected through interviews September though December 2017. The metabolic index was measured using National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III), and cardiovascular risk factors were measured using Framingham Risk Score (FRS). Depressive and non-depressive groups were divided by the score of Geriartric Depress Scale Short Korea Version (GDSSF). Collected data were analyzed using a x2 test, independent t-test, and binary logistic regression, with the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: Vulnerable diabetic elderly women, did not exercise in the depressive groups, and had higher triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and larger waists, than in the non-depressive group. Results show that lack of exercise (OR= 6.30), is the highest risk factor, influencing the depressive symptom in vulnerable diabetic elderly women. Conclusion: These results suggest that to reduce depressive symptom levels among vulnerable diabetic elderly women, nursing interventions are needed to increase exercise and decrease TG, TC, and waist size, particularly in improving exercise of vulnerable diabetic elderly women.
Purpose: This study was to examine the factors (depression, level of health status, physical function, depression) influence health related quality of life (EQ5D) in community dwelling elderly according to sex. Methods: A total of 226 elderly subjects over the age of 65 years in community were included. Data were collected by measuring the physical function (muscle endurance, flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular endurance) and by using a questionnaire about EQ5D, depression, health status. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. Results: The major findings of this study are as follows. Explained variance of EQ5D by regular exercise, physical function, and level of health status was 19% for male elderly subjects and 26.0% for female elderly subjects. The effect was different according to sex. Depression has the effect on EQ5D (${\beta}=-.356$, p<.001) in females, while the level of health status has the effect (${\beta}=.314$, p=.027) in males. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the effect of regular exercise, physical function, and level of health status were different on EQ5D according to sex. Thus, different health programs according to sex are necessary to increase the quality of life in elderly individuals.

Objectives : To measure the distribution of electrocardiographic ST segment depression, and evaluate its relationships with cardiovascular risk factors based on the cross-sectional studies within a rural Korean community Methods : This study analyzed 1,343 persons, over 40 years old, who participated in a baseline survey during 2002-2005; the exclusion criteria included: a past history of myocardial infarction and angina pectoris, and specific conduction abnormalities. A Standard 12 leads ECG was recorded using an FCP-2101 (Fukuda Denshi Co.). The ST segment depression was retrospectively measured by a physician, according to the Minnesota code classification. Results : ST segment depression was found in 3.6 and 6.4% of male and female participants, respectively. After adjusting for age, gender, smoking, physical activity and obesity differences, high blood pressure showed significant relations with ST depression in females (male ORs=2.67, 95% CI=0.85-8.50; female ORs=2.62, 95% CI=1.29-5.32) Conclusions : As an ischemic ECG sign, ST depression was related to hypertension in female participants. This relationship remained significant, even after cases with left ventricular hypertrophy were removed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of an exercise program on muscle strength, Activities of Daily Living (ADL), health perception, and depression among post-stroke elders. Methods: Nonequivalent control group design with pretest and posttest was used. A total of 23 post-stroke elders who met inclusion criteria were recruited. Muscle strength in upper and lower extremities, ADL, health perception, and self-rated symptoms of depression were measured. The exercise program consisted of deep breathing, range of motion, and muscle strengthening exercises using Thera-band, 30~40 min/day, three days a week, for 12 weeks. Results: Muscle strength of right shoulder (U=11.50, p=.001), right leg (U=13.50, p=.002), and health perception (U=24.00, p=.010) in the experimental group was significantly higher compared to the control group at 12 weeks of post-intervention. Depression scores were significantly lower in the experimental group compared to the control group at 6 weeks (U=28.00, p=.021), at 12 weeks (U=22.00, p=.006) of an exercise program. Conclusion: By applying this program, post-stroke elders showed increases in muscle strength and a decrease in depression as well as improvement of health perception. Further study is needed to verify the effects of the exercise program on cardiovascular physiologic variables through long-term follow-up.
