This paper relates to the synthesis of a source powder for SiC crystal growth. ${\beta}-SiC$ powders are synthesized at high temperatures (>$1400^{\circ}C$) by a reaction between silicon powder and carbon powder. The reaction is carried out in a graphite crucible operating in a vacuum ambient (or Ar gas) over a period of time sufficient to cause the Si+C mixture to react and form poly-crystalline SiC powder. End-product characterizations are pursued with X-ray diffraction analysis, SEM/EDS, particle size analyzer and ICP-OES. The purity of the end-product was analyzed with the Korean Standard KS L 1612.

In order to prepare high-quality activated carbons (ACs), coal tar pitch (CTP), and mixtures of CTP and petroleum pitch (PP) were activated with KOH. The ACs prepared by activation of CTP in the range of $700{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ for 1~5 h had very porous textures with large specific surface areas of $2470{\sim}3081m^2/g$. The optimal activation conditions of CTP were determined as CTP/KOH ratio of 1:4, activation temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, and activation time of 3 h. The obtained AC showed the highest micro-pore volume, and pretty high specific surface area and meso-pore volume. The micro-pore volumes and specific areas of activated mixtures of CTP and PP were similar to each other but the meso-pore volume could be increased. In order to change the degree of crystallinity of precursors before KOH activation process, the CTPs were carbonized in the range of $500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. As the carbonization temperature increased, the specific surface area and pore volume of the activated ACs with the same activation conditions for CTP decreased dramatically. It was demonstrated that the increased pore size distribution of AC electrodes in the range of 1 to 2 nm plays an important role in the performance of electric double-layer capacitor.

Bamboo is an evergreen perennial plant, and it is known as one of the most productive and fastest-growing plants in the world. It grows quickly in moderate climates with only moderate water and fertilizer. Traditionally in Asia, bamboo is used for building materials, as a food source, and as versatile raw materials. Bamboo as a biomass feedstock can be transformed to prepare activated carbon using the thermal treatment of pyrolysis. The effect of process variables such as carbonization temperature, activation temperature, activation time, the amount of steam, and the mixing ratio of phosphoric acid and bamboo were systematically investigated to optimize the preparation conditions. Steam activation was proceeded after carbonization with a vapor flow rate of $0.8{\sim}1.8mL-H_2O\;g-char^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ and activation time of 1 ~ 3 h at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. Carbon yield and surface area reached 2.04 ~ 20.59 wt% and $499.17{\sim}1074.04m^2\;g^{-1}$, respectively, with a steam flow rate of $1.4mL-H_2O\;g-char^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ for 2 h. Also, the carbon yield and surface area were 24.67 wt% and $1389.59m^2\;g^{-1}$, respectively, when the bamboo and phosphoric acid were mixed in a 1:1 weight ratio ($700^{\circ}C$, 2 h, $1.4mL-H_2O\;g-char^{-1}\;h^{-1}$). The adsorption of methylene blue into the bamboo activated carbon was studied based on pseudo first order and second order kinetics models. The adsorption kinetics were found to follow the pseudo second order model, which is governed by chemisorption.

This Study was investigated operating condition of pyrolysis processing for sludge disposal in sewage treatment plant. Important parameters studied include running time of pyrolysis, run time of dry and pyrolysis processing, water content of sewage sludge, solids amount of sewage sludge(TS%), condition of pyrolysis temperature. Most degradation reaction of sewage sludge are first order, it assumed first order and elucidated the kinetics. This was the basis of characteristics analysis of sludge degradation mechanism. Also, with the increasing of temperature, how the yield of oil and char product change was observed, and the distribution of gas product components was observed. Main components of gas and carbon product are a little difference with pyrolysis temperature, but it consist of $CH_4$, $C_2H_4$, $C_3H_8$, $C_4H_{10}$, toluene, $C_6H_6$, $SO_2$, CO etc. The gas of $C_1-C_4$ yield increased along with degradation temperature of $670^{\circ}C$ and oil yield decreased of $C_6H_6$ and $C_6H_5OH$ with temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. Particularly, low value added char yield 134kg/t at $670^{\circ}C$, but increased to 194kg/t at pyrolysis temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. In the result of elementary analysis on it, it is mainly composed of carbon. From this fact, in pyrolysis of sludge, it comfirmed that carbonization reaction occur at high temperature well.
The purpose of this study is to secure the basis for judgment on the cause of an accident by analyzing the melting characteristics of a blade type fuse used for vehicles due to overload. In order to increase the reliability of the test, it was conducted by connecting the electrical system with conditions similar to those of an actual vehicle to apply the load. Carbonization pattern experiment of fuse by outside flame applied Korean Standard (KS). The fuse melted by the overcurrent showed a smooth cross-section while the test terminals, clear plastic body, etc., burnt out by the external flame was badly deformed. When 185% of the rated current (27.8A) was applied to a cable of 15A rated current onto which an over-capacity fuse (20A) was installed, the fuse melting time was 217 seconds. In addition, when a load current of 28.8[A] (139%) was applied, the fuse's test terminal and terminal blade were not burnt out although foam was observed on some parts of the plastic body. When a load capacity of 28.2[A] (141%) was applied to a cable of 15A rated current onto which an over-capacity fuse (30A) was installed, the fuse melting time was approximately 10 seconds. When a load current of 35.8[A] (119%) was applied, the fuse's test terminal and terminal blade were not burnt out, although some parts of the plastic body was swelled. However, it was observed that the switch terminal melted if approximately six minutes lapsed under such conditions. When a load capacity of 39.4[A] (131%) was applied to a cable of 15A rated current onto which an over-capacity fuse (30A) was installed, the fuse melted in approximately 69 seconds, and the test terminal and terminal blade were not burnt.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fire srpead risk of building exterior and roofing materials due to the firebrand of forest fire occurring in the urban areas. Method: In order to achieve this research purpose, by selecting building materials used for exterior and roofing materials of buildings, the time to ignition, total heat release, and heat release rate were investigated, and a forest fire firebrand system was established to the possibility of fire spread was confirmed. Result: As a result of the cone calorimeter test, the roofing material had a similar or faster ignition time due to radiant heat compared to the exterior material with the steel plate exposed to the outside, and showed a higher heat release rate and total heat release than the exterior material. Although it was affected by the flammable material, it was confirmed that it did not spread easily due to the limited amount of combustible material, and carbonization marks appeared inside. Conclusion: The cone calorimeter test method has been shown to be useful in understanding the combustion characteristics of building materials by radiant heat, but the fire spread due to a firebrand in a forest fire is directly affected by the flame due to the ignition of surrounding combustibles, so finding a direct correlation with the cone calorimeter method is difficult. It is judged that the roof material may be more vulnerable to the spread of fire due to the fire than the exterior material.

This study was conducted to observe the microscopic structures of cavities formed after ablation of primary teeth, permanent teeth, enamel and dentin in using a bur and cavities formed after ablation using laser and the following results were obtained after comparing the effects of ablation. Using a #330 bur and Er:YAG laser irradiated at 150 mJ, 200 mJ, 250 mJ and 300 mJ all at the frequency of 5 Hz, 1 mm enamel and dentin samples were ablated and the ablation time was measured. In order to measure the surfaces ablated, 5 each of primary teeth and permanent teeth were ablated using a #330 bur and Er:YAG laser at 150 mJ, 200 mJ, 250 mJ and 300 mJ for 1 sec and the cross section and vertical section were observed. The following results were obtained : 1. Cutting time of Er:YAG laser was longer than that of conventinal high-speed bur regardless of teeth type. 2. Cutting on enamel, Cutting time of conventional high-speed bur in deciduous teeth was longer than in permanent teeth(P<0.05). But Er:YAG laser was not showed any difference between the deciduous and permanent teeth(P>0.05). 3. Cutting on dentin, Cutting time of conventional high-speed bur in permanent teeth was longer than deciduous teeth. Er:YAG laser of 150 mJ, 5 Hz in permanent teeth was longer than in deciduous teeth(p<0.05). But laser of other power did not showed mean difference. 4. The cavity surface treated with the convetional high-speed bur revealed a relatively flat appearance, almost covered with a debris-like smear layer. Cavity wall showed striped appearance because of blade of bur. 5. The cavity surface treated by the Er:YAG laser system was irregular or rough surface with the absence charring, carbonization, or cracking of the dentin. In addition, there was an absence of a smear layer. Cavity floor was round and relatively smooth. According to these results, cutting time of Er:YAG laser was almostly same in permanent and deciduous teeth, but more effective in dentin than enamel. Cutting the sample, Er:YAG laser was needed more time than conventional bur. But SEM findings suggested that laser device produced favorable surface characteristic(i.e, no smear layer, irregular surface, cracking).

The latest concrete structure has showed that the deterioration of durability has been increased by the damage from salt, carbonization, freezing & thawing and the others. Therefore, the measures for the concrete which has deteriorated durability have been taken. Among them, it has been often used that surface treatment which cuts off the deterioration factors of durability by protecting the surface of concrete. However, troubles such as fracture and rupture in the repair layer have been reported as time goes by due to the difference between the organic repair material like epoxy and concrete properties. Researchers have been developing the repair material which can cut off the deterioration factors of durability such as $CO_2$ gas, chloride ion and water by making the formation of concrete elaborate through the reaction with calcium ion when the surface improving agent is coated on the concrete. The main ingredient of that is inorganic substance which is the same as the concrete property. This study was evaluated the surface improving agent for permeability, watertightness, air-permeability, chemical resistance and elution resistance. As a result, it has been reported that the surface improving agent improves watertightness and air-permeability by penetration more than 10mm within concrete. Therefore, it is concluded that the surface improving agent developed in this research prevents deterioration of concrete durability when it is coated on the concrete structure.
The Ag-impregnated activated carbon was produced from bamboo activated carbon by soaking method of silver nitrate solution. The carbonization and activation of raw material was conducted at $900^{\circ}C$. Soaking conditions are the variation of silver nitrate solution concentration (0.002~0.1 mol/L) and soaking time (maximum 24 h). The specific surface area and pore size distribution of the prepared activated carbons were measured. Also, NO and activated carbon reaction were conducted in a thermogravimetric analyzer in order to use for de-NOx agents of used activated carbon. Carbon-NO reactions were carried out with respect to reaction temperature ($20{\sim}850^{\circ}C$) and NO gas partial pressure (0.1~1.8 kPa). As results, Ag amounts are saturated within 2h, Ag amounts increased 1.95 mg Ag/g (0.2%)~ 88.70 mg Ag/g (8.87%) with the concentration of silver nitrate solution in the range of 0.002~0.1 mol/L. The specific volume and surface area of bamboo activated carbon of impregnated with 0.2% silver were maximum, but decreased with increasing Ag amounts of activated carbon due to pore blocking. In NO reaction, the reaction rate of impregnated bamboo activated carbon was retarded as compare with that of bamboo activated carbon. Measured reaction orders of NO concentration and activation energy were 0.63[BA], 0.69l[BA(Ag)] and 80.5 kJ/mol[BA], 66.4 kJ/mol[BA(Ag)], respectively.
In this study, the electrochemical performance of surface modified carbon using the PFO (pyrolyzed fuel oil) was investigated by chemical activation with KOH and $K_2CO_3$. PFO was heat treated at $390{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 1~3h to prepared the pitch. Three carbon precursors (pitch) prepared by the thermal reaction were 3903 (at $390^{\circ}C$ for 3h), 4001(at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1h) and 4002 (at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2h). Also, the effect of chemical activation catalysts and mixing time on the development of porosity during carbonization was investigated. The prepared carbon was analyzed by BET and FE-SEM. It was shown that chemical activation with KOH could be successfully used to develop carbon with specific surface area ($3.12m^2/g$) and mean pore size (22 nm). The electrochemical characteristics of modified carbon as the anode were investigated by constant current charge/discharge, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests. The coin cell using pitch (4002) modified by KOH has better initial capacity (318 mAh/g) than that of other pitch coin cells. Also, this prepared carbon anode appeared a high initial efficiency of 80% and the retention rate capability of 2C/0.1 C was 92%. It is found that modified carbon anode showed improved cycling and rate capacity performance.
