In reinforced concrete carbonation of concrete leads to depassivation of the reinforcement, and hence to initiation of corrosion. As a result of carbonation accelerating experiment with using effect of wet-dry cycle and 15% concentration of CO ₂, the carbonation rate shows very distinct difference according to W/C ratio. OPC-40 estimated no carbonation depth, whereas OPC-60 estimated rapidly the carbonation rate. The comparative analysis of the carbonation rate accelerating depends on different kinds of cement shows fastest FAC-20. Also, highly W/C ratio's concrete shows low half-cell potential value and fast corrosion rate. During period for 14 weeks. corrosion rate was not severe. So, it can be concluded that only carbonation attack on concrete doesn't severly deteriorated except very poor qualitified concrete.
This research paper aims at computer based modeling of carbonation induced corrosion under extreme conditions and its experimental verification by incorporating enhanced electrochemical and mass balance equations based on thermo-hygro physics with strong coupling of mass transport and equilibrium in micro-pore structure of carbonated concrete for which the previous research data is limited. In this paper the carbonation induced electrochemical corrosion model is developed and coupled with carbon dioxide transport computational model by the use of a concrete durability computer based model DuCOM developed by our research group at concrete laboratory in the University of Tokyo and its reliability is checked in the light of experiment results of carbonation induced corrosion mass loss obtained in this research. The comparison of model analysis and experiment results shows a fair agreement. The carbonation induced corrosion model computation reasonably predicts the quantitative behavior of corrosion rate for normal air dry relative humidity conditions. The computational model developed also shows fair qualitative corrosion rate simulation and analysis for various pH levels and coupled environmental actions of chloride and carbonation. Detailed verification of the model for the quantitative carbonation induced corrosion rate computation under varying relative conditions, different pH levels and combined effects of carbonation and chloride attack remain as scope for future research.
This paper investigates the reaction rate of $CO_2$ storing carbonation hybrid reaction by comparing the behavior of carbonation between $Ca(OH)_2$ and fly ash with that of CFBC (Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion) containing plenty of Free-CaO. Because fly ash with CFBC contains a lot of unreacted CaO, it cannot be used as a raw material for concrete admixtures and its usages are limited. To reuse such material, we stabilized unreacted CaO by carbonation and investigated the carbonation rate. We used a pH meter and a thermometer to check the rate of the carbonization. Also, we set the contents of fly ash with CFBC, $Ca(OH)_2$, flow and fluid of $CO_2$, respectively, to 100 g, 50 g, 100 ~ 1000 cc/min and 400 g based on the content of Free-CaO. We used carbonated water instead of water, and added an alkaline activator to promote the carbonation rate. As a result, the addition of the alkaline activator and carbonated water promoted the rate of carbonation via a hybrid reaction.

Major deterioration in concrete structures are salt attack and carbonation. Especially severe problems due to carbonation occur in tile concrete structures of city, tunnel, underground structures. Cracks in concrete during service life including early age due to hydration heat and/or shrinkage accelerate the diffusion of concrete so that the deterioration is also accelerated. In this study, carbonation depths of both non-cracked concrete and cracked concrete are evaluated and weight change test and TGA are carried out. Through the tests, a relation between water-cement ratio and carbonation depth is derived and also carbonation increase rate is derived in the function of crack width.

In this study, the carbonation characteristics of concrete according to the mixture of OLED waste glass were evaluated. Replacement capacities of OLED waste glass were 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of cement, and they were named OG 0, OG 10, OG 20, and OG 30. As a result of the compressive strength test, OG 0 without replacing OLED waste glass showed high intensity until the 14th. However, the higher the replacement rate of OLED waste glass, the higher the compressive strength of 28 days. In addition, the speed of carbonation was faster with the higher the replacement rate of OLED waste glass, and the accelerated carbonation experiment was about three times faster than the natural carbonation test. In conclusion, the carbonation characteristics of OLED concrete are expected to be positive in terms of atmospheric CO2 absorption.

Carbonation of the root concrete reduces the durability of the reinforced concrete, and it is important to check the carbonation resistance of the concrete to ensure the durability of the reinforced concrete structure. In this study, a basic study on the prediction of carbonation progress was conducted by considering the mixing conditions of concrete using deep learning algorithm during the theory of artificial neural network theory. The data used in the experiment used values that converted the carbonation velocity coefficient obtained from the mixing conditions of concrete and the accelerated carbonation experiment into the actual environment. The analysis shows that the error rate of the deep learning model according to the Hidden Layer is the best for the model using five layers, and based on the five Hidden layers, we want to verify the predicted performance of the carbonation speed coefficient of the carbonation test specimen in which the exposure experiment took place in the real environment.

The glass of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag(GGBFS) was released by the hydroxyl ions during the hydration of the Portland cement. That results in relatively less $Ca(OH)_{2}$ in the concrete replaced with GGBFS than in ordinary portland cement concrete(OPCC). As the quantity of $Ca(OH)_{2}$ is decreased, the rate of carbonation in the concrete replaced GGBFS is faster than OPCC. Therefore, it has been misunderstood that the concrete replaced GGBFS has negative effect on the corrosion of steel by carbonation. Therefore, this study aimed at the relation between carbonation and rebar corrsion in the concrete with GGBFS, measuring air.water permeability, half cell, and corrosion rate by the depth of carbonation.

In this study, the compressive strength and carbonation properties of geopolymer paste according to the amount of alkali admixture added were evaluated for the development of geopolymer concrete that recycles industrial waste. A geopolymer paste specimen was prepared using Ca(OH)2 as an admixture, and the prepared specimen was standard cured for 28 days. After curing, the compressive strength of the specimen was measured. As the amount of alkali admixture increased, the compressive strength increased. After curing, carbonation was carried out for 7 days in a CO2 5% environment. As a result of comparative evaluation of the amount of CaCO3 produced according to carbonation, the amount of CaCO3 produced increased as the amount of Ca(OH)2 added increased. However, when the amount of admixture added exceeds 5%, the increase rate decreases, so the optimum addition rate is considered to be 5%.

Concrete carbonation is one of the factors that reduce the durability of concrete. In modern times, due to industrialization, the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is increasing, and the impact of carbonation is increasing. So, it is important to understand the carbonation resistance according to the concrete compounding to secure the concrete durability life. In this study, we want to predict the concrete carbonation velocity coefficient, which is an indicator of the carbonation resistance of concrete, through the deep learning algorithm, and to find the activation function suitable for the prediction of carbonation rate coefficient as a process to determine the learning accuracy through the deep learning algorithm. In the scope of this study, using the ReLU function showed better accuracy than using other activation functions.
Mineral carbonation for the storage of carbon dioxide is a CCS option that provides an alternative for the more widely advocated method of geological storage in underground formation. Carbonation of magnesium- or calcium-based minerals, especially the carbonation of waste materials and industrial by-products is expanding, even though total amounts of the industrial waste are too small to substantially reduce the $CO_2$ emissions. The mineral carbonation was performed with steelmaking reduction slag as starting material. The steelmaking reduction slag dissolution experiments were conducted in the $H_2SO_4$ and $NH_4NO_3$ solution with concentration range of 0.3 to 1 M at $100^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$. The hydrothermal treatment was performed to the starting material via a modified direct aqueous carbonation process at the same leaching temperature. The initial pH of the solution was adjusted to 12 and $CO_2$ partial pressure was 1MPa for the carbonation. The carbonation rate after extracting $Ca^^{2+}$ under $NH_4NO_3$ was higher than that under $H_2SO_4$ and the carbonation rates in 1M $NH_4NO_3$ solution at $150^{\circ}C$ was dramatically enhanced about 93%. In this condition well-faceted rhombohedral calcite, and rod or flower-shaped aragonite were appeared together in products. As the concentration of $H_2SO_4$ increased, the formation of gypsum was predominant and the carbonation rate decreased sharply. Therefore it is considered that the selection of the leaching solution which does not affect the starting material is important in the carbonation reaction.
