  • We measured phosphate benthic fluxes and conducted phosphate adsorption experiments in order to find out the effects of adsorption on phosphate benthic fluxes in the intertidal sediments of Keunso Bay during summer and winter. Organic carbon contents showed little variation with season at St. S1, but noticeable changes were observed at St. S2, which were three times higher in winter than in summer. The higher organic carbon contents in winter resulted from the bloom of benthic algae in surface sediments. Pore water phosphate concentrations were much higher in summer than in winter. The higher phosphate concentration in summer was probably due to the faster remineralization rate of organic matter in summer. At St. S1, benthic fluxes of phosphate showed a negative value in summer and a positive value in winter. However, St. S2 had a negative benthic flux both in summer and winter. The negative benthic flux was ascribed to the phosphate adsorption on iron oxides in surface sediments. The equilibrium concentrations of phosphate obtained from the adsorption experiment were three times higher at St. S1 than at St. S2. The relatively high adsorption coefficient and low equilibrium concentration indicated that phosphate was strongly adsorbed on the surface sediments of Keunso Bay. The strong adsorption affinity significantly reduced benthic fluxes of phosphate in the intertidal sediments.

  • This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel is injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. Investigated are the engine performance and emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 40 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, $150\;to\;180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet-air temperature, and $80^{\circ}$ BTDC to $20^{\circ}$ ATDC in the injection timing. A controlled auto-ignition gasoline engine can be achieved that the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air. It can be achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide had been significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engine.

  • Molecular self-assembly has several advantages over other nanofabrication methods. Molecular building blocks ensure ultrafine pattern precision, parallel structure formation allows for mass production and a variety of three-dimensional structures are available for fabricating complex structures. Nevertheless, the molecular interaction for self-assembly generally relies on weak forces such as van der Waals force, hydrogen bonding, or hydrophobic interaction. Due to the weak interaction, the structure formation is usually slow and the degree of ordering is low in a self-assembled structure. To promote self-assembly, directed assembly methods employing prepatterned substrates or external fields have been developed and gathered a great deal of technological attention as a next generation nanofabrication process. In this presentation a variety of directed assembly methods for soft nanomaterials including block copolymers, peptides and carbon nanomaterials will be introduced. Block copolymers are representative self-assembling materials extensively utilized in nanofabrication. In contrast to colloid assembly or anodized metal oxides, various shapes of nanostructures, including lines or interconnected networks, can be generated with a precise tunability over their shape and size. Applying prepatterned substrates$^{1,2}$ or introducing thickness modulation$^3$ to block copolymer thin films allowed for the control over the orientational and positional orderings of self-assembled structures. The nanofabrication processes for metals, semiconductors$^4$, carbon nanotubes$^{5,6}$, and graphene$^{6,7}$ templating block copolymer self-assembly will be presented.

  • A CRDI diesel engine used to commercial vehicle was fueled with 20% biodiesel fuel(BDF 20) in excess of 150 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the engine performance and exhaust emissions. The engine performance and exhaust emissions were sampled at 1 hour interval for analysis, Also, BSEC with BDF 20 resulted in lower than with diesel fuel. Since the biodiesel fuel used in this study includes oxygen of about 11%, it could influence the combustion process strongly. So, BDF 20 resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and smoke emissions without special increase of oxides of nitrogen than diesel fuel. It was concluded that there was no unusual deterioration of the engine, or any unusual change in exhaust emissions from using the BDF 20.

  • In commercial combustion systems, heavy oil is one of main hydrocarbon fuel because of its economical efficiency. Regarding heavy oil combustion, due to increasing concerns over environmental pollutants such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxides, development of low pollutant emission methods has become an imminent issue for practical application to numerous combustion devices. Also a great amount of effort has been tried to developed effective methods for practical using of biomass. It is also an important issue to reduce carbon tax. In this paper, an experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effect of biomass reburning on NOx formation in a heavy oil flamed combustion furnace. Experiments were performed in flames stabilized by a multi-staged burner, which was mounted at the front of the furnace. Experimental tests were conducted using air-carried rice husk powder and LNG as the reburn fuel and heavy oil as the main fuel. The paper reports data on flue gas emissions and temperature distribution in the furnace for several kinds of experimental conditions. NOx concentration in the exhaust has decreased considerably due to effect of reburning. The maximum NOx reduction rate was 62% when the rice husk was used by reburn fuel, however it was 59% when the LNG was used by reburn fuel. The result shows the positive possibility of biomass reburning system for optimal NOx reduction.

  • The effects of residual impurities on solid state sintering of the powder injection molded (PIMed) W-15wt%Cu nanocomposite powder were investigated. The W-Cu nanocomposite powder was produced by the mech-ano-chemical process consisting of high energy ball-milling and hydrogen reduction of W blue powder-cuO mixture. Solid state sintering of the powder compacts was conducted at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2~10 h in hydrogen atmosphere. The den-sification of PIM specimen was slightly larger than that of PM(conventional PM specimen), being due to fast coalescence of aggregate in the PIM. The only difference between PIM and PM specimens was the amount of residual impurities. The carbon as a strong reduction agent effectively reduced residual W oxide in the PIM specimen. The $H_2O$ formed by $H_2$ reduction of oxide disintegrated W-Cu aggregates during removal process, on the contrary to this, micropore volume rapidly decreased due to coalescence of the disintegrated W-Cu aggregates during evolution of CO.It can be concluded that the higher densification was due to the earlier occurred Cu phase spreading that was induced by effective removal of residual oxides by carbon.

  • This study is concerned the electrocatalytic generation of oxygen gas at electrochemically deposited manganese oxide electrode in KOH solution. Manganese oxide nanoparticles electrodeposited onto relatively substrate, e.g glassy carbon, Au, Ti electrode. MnOx is electrodeposited in nanorod structure which cover the overall surface of the substrate. The $\gamma$-MnOOH that is kind of manganese oxide species plays a significant role as a catalytic mediator, which promote 4-electron reduction process. Modified electrodes with electrodeposited manganese oxide structures resulted in significant decrease in the anodic polarization compared with the unmodified electrodes in alkaline media.

  • The effects of ammonia-treated graphene oxide (GO) on composites based on epoxy resin were investigated. Ammonia solutions of different concentrations (14-28%) were used to modify GO. Nitrogen functional groups were introduced on the GO surfaces without significant structural changes. The ammonia-treated GO-based epoxy composites exhibited interesting changes in their mechanical properties related to the presence of nitrogen functional groups, particularly amine ($C-NH_2$) groups on the GO surfaces. The highest tensile and impact strength values were 42.1 MPa and 12.3 J/m, respectively, which were observed in an epoxy composite prepared with GO treated with a 28% ammonia solution. This improved tensile strength was 2.2 and 1.3 times higher than those of the neat epoxy and the non-treated GO-based epoxy composite, respectively. The amine groups on the GO ensure its participation in the cross-linking reaction of the epoxy resin under amine curing agent condition and enhance its interfacial bonding with the epoxy resin.

  • Fine powders of amorphous $Al_2O_3,\;SiO_2,\;Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ system were prepared by hydrolysis of solutions containing alkoxides, aluminium tri-isopropoxide and silicon tetra-ethoxide. High purity ultrafine ${\beta}-sialon$ powders were prepared by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of amorphous $Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ powders mixed with carbon black as a reducing agent. In the hydrolysis step the effect of the factors such as pH, reaction temperature and amount of water on the conversion rate of alkoxides to oxides was investigated. In the carbothermal reduction-nitridation the reaction path was assumed by the analysis of intermediates formed in the process of ${\beta}-sialon$ synthesis and the reaction kinetics of ${\beta}-sialon$ formation was considered.
