  • In this paper, we describe a new method to form polymer thin films, in which carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are homogeneously distributed so that they can strengthen the mechanical property of resulting polymer film. To do so, we first homogeneously mixed CNTs with polymer in a DMF solvent. With the assistance of ultrasonic nebulizer, the polymer/CNT solution was then aerosolized into micro-sized droplets and finally turned into solidified polymer/CNT composite particles by gas-phase drying process. As the results of SEM and TEM analysis, CNTs were found to be homogeneously immobilized in the polymer matrix particles due to rapid drying process in the gas phase. For comparison purpose, (i) the polymer/CNTs composite particles prepared by aerosol processing method and (ii) polymer/CNTs sheets prepared by simple solution-evaporation method were employed to form polymer/CNTs composite thin films using a hot press. As the result, the aerosol processing of composite particles was found to be a much more effective method to form homogeneously distributed-CNTs in the polymer matrix thin film.

  • Generally, field emitters can be categorized into two types according to the emitter shape, one is a planar field emitter and the other is a point emitter. The planar field emitter is used for displays, flat lamps and signage boards. On the other hands, the point field emitter is expected to play a significant role in x-ray sources and electron beam sources. Such applications of the point field emitters, especially, need large emission current and high emission stability with a small electron beam size. A few reports announced point emitters made by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). However, they still have suffered from poor reproducibility and low emission current. Here, we demonstrated high performance CNT point emitters by attaching CNTs onto graphite rod. Graphite rod exhibited good electrical conductivity and chemical stability. In this method, the shape of the point emitter could be easily controlled by changing the length and diameter of the graphite rod. The CNT point emitter showed emission current over 1 mA at an applied electric field of 1.4 V/${\mu}m$. We consider that the stable emission performance is attributed to the stable contact between CNTs and graphite rod.

  • In the present work, by considering the agglomeration effect of single-walled carbon nanotubes, free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) nanocomposite sandwich plates resting on Pasternak foundation are presented. The volume fractions of randomly oriented agglomerated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction. To determine the effect of CNT agglomeration on the elastic properties of CNT-reinforced composites, a two-parameter micromechanical model of agglomeration is employed. In this research work, an equivalent continuum model based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach is employed to estimate the effective constitutive law of the elastic isotropic medium (matrix) with oriented straight CNTs. The 2-D generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) as an efficient and accurate numerical tool is used to discretize the equations of motion and to implement the various boundary conditions. The proposed rectangular plates have two opposite edges simply supported, while all possible combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions are applied to the other two edges. The benefit of using the considered power-law distribution is to illustrate and present useful results arising from symmetric and asymmetric profiles. The effects of two-parameter elastic foundation modulus, geometrical and material parameters together with the boundary conditions on the frequency parameters of the laminated FG nanocomposite plates are investigated. It is shown that the natural frequencies of structure are seriously affected by the influence of CNTs agglomeration. This study serves as a benchmark for assessing the validity of numerical methods or two-dimensional theories used to analysis of laminated plates.

  • Use of the carbon nanotube is superior to general powder state materials of mechanical and electrical properties. Because its ratio of diameter and length (aspect ratio) is very large, it has been known as a type of ideal nano-reinforcement material. Based on this advantage, the existing carbon black of semiconductive shield materials used in power cables can acquire excellent properties by using a small amount of carbon nanotubes. Thus, we investigated the thermal properties of the carbon nanotube, such as thermal conductivity, specific heat, and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). We found that a high thermal resistance level is demonstrated by using a small amount of carbon nanotubes. As a result, this tendency confirms high cross-linking density in a new network in which the carbon nanotube between carbon black constitute molecules shows a bond by similar constructive properties.

  • Carbon-based coatings, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and buckyball ($C_{60}$), receive much interest because of their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties for a wide range of electromechanical component-based applications. Previous experimental results demonstrate that these carbon-based coatings are promising solid lubricants because of their superior tribological properties, and thus help prolong the lifetime of silicon-based applications. In this study, CNT coatings are deposited on a bare silicon (100) substrate by electrodynamic spraying under different deposition conditions. During the coating deposition, the applied voltage, CNT concentration of the solution, distance between the injecting nozzle and the substrate and diameter of the injecting nozzle are optimized to control the thickness and surface roughness of the CNT coatings. The surface morphology and thickness of the coatings are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The friction and wear properties of the coatings are investigated by using a pin-on-reciprocating-type tribotester under various experimental conditions. The friction coefficient of the CNT coating is as low as 0.15 under high normal loads. The overall results reveal that CNT coatings deposited by electrodynamic spraying provide relatively uniform with superior lubrication performance.

  • We report the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on Invar-42 plates using coal tar pitch (CTP) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The solid phase CTP is used as an inexpensive carbon source since it produces a bunch of hydrocarbon gases such as $CH_4$ and other $C_xH_v$ by thermal decomposition over $450^{\circ}C$. The Invar-42 is a representative Ni-based ferrous alloy and can be used repetitively as a substrate for CNT growth because Ni and Fe are used as very active catalytic elements. We changed mixing ratio of carrier gases, argon and hydrogen, and temperature of growth region. It was found that the optimum gas ratio and temperature for high quality CNT growth are $Ar:H_2=400:400$ sccm and $1000^{\circ}C$, respectively. In addition, the carbon nanoball (CNB) was also obtained by just changing the mixing ratio to $Ar:H_2=100:600$ sccm. Finally, CTP can be employed as a versatile carbon source to produce various carbon-based nanomaterials, such as CNT and CNB.

  • Semiconducting layers are thin rubber film between electrical cable wire and insulating polymer layers having a volume resistivity of ${\sim}10^2{\Omega}cm$. Commercial semiconducting layers ire composed of polymer composites reinforced with more than 30 wt% of carbon blacks. A new semiconducting material was suggested in this study based on the carbon nanotube(CNT)-reinforced polymer nanocomposites. CNT-reinforced polymer nanocomposites were prepared by solution mixing and precipitation with various polymer type and dual filler system. The mechanical, thermal and electrical properties were investigated as a function of polymer type and dual filler system based on CNT and carbon black. The volume resistivity of composites was strongly related with the crystallinity of polymer matrix. With the decreased crystallinity, the volume resistivity decreased linearly until a critical point, and it remained constant with further decreasing the crystallinity. Dual filler system also affected the volume resistivity. The CNT-reinforced nanocomposite showed the lowest volume resistivity. When a small amount of carbon black(CB) was replaced the CNT, the crystallinity increased considerably leading to a higher volume resistivity.

  • This study presents an excellent planar heater based on low-dimensional composites. By optimizing the ratio of 1D carbon nanotubes (CNT) and 2D MXene (Ti3C2TX), it is possible to create a planar heater that has superior electrical conductivity and high heat generation characteristics. Low-dimensional composites were prepared by mixing CNT paste and MXene solution with eco-friendly waterborne polyurethane (WPU). In order to find the optimal mixing ratio for the MXene-CNT-WPU composites, samples with MXene to CNT weight ratios of 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 1:7, and 1:14 were investigated. In addition to these different weight ratios, 5 wt% WPU was equally applied to each sample. It was confirmed that the higher the weight ratio of CNT, the lower the sheet resistance and the higher the heating temperature. In particular, when the MXene-CNT-WPU planar heater was fabricated by mixing MXene and CNT at a weight ratio of 1:7 and 1:14, the heating temperature was higher than the heating temperature of a CNT-WPU planar heater. These characteristics are due to the optimized mixture of the 1D materials (CNT) and the 2D materials (MXene) causing the formation of a flat surface and a dense network structure. The low-dimensional composites manufactured with the optimized mixing ratios found in this study are expected to be applied in flexible electronic devices.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) were synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method. To fabricate CNT gas sensor, catalyst metal layer was deposited on microstructure. The CNT gas detecting layer was grown by thermal CVD method on the catalyst metal layer. In order to investigate the gas sensing characteristics of the fabricated CNT gas sensor, it was exposed in NO$_2$ gas and sensitivity, response, and recovery time were measured. As the result, this sensor has better reproductibility and faster recovery time than another CNT gas sensors.

  • The effect of the dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}$) of bonding materials in screen-printed carbon nanotube cathode on field enhancement factor was investigated using the ANSYS software for high-efficient CNT-cathodes. The field enhancement factor increased with decreasing the dielectric constant and reaching a maximum value when the dielectric constant is 1, the value for a vacuum. This indicates that the best bonding materials for screen-printing CNT cathodes should have a low dielectric constant and this can be used as criteria for selecting bonding materials for use in CNT pastes for high-efficient CNT-cathodes
