  • Thermal degradation of titanium-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs; MIL-125 and MIL-125-$NH_2$ at $350^{\circ}C$ for 6 h in air produced $TiO_2$ nanoparticles of ca. 10 nm in diameter. Scanning electron and transmission electron microscope analyses indicated that those nanoparticles were aggregated randomly within each crystalline particle of their MOF precursors. The $TiO_2$ nanoparticles prepared from MIL-125-$NH_2$ exhibited higher activity for the degradation of 4-chlorophenol under visible light.

  • Pt-loaded carbon black for the catalyst of a PEM fuel cell was synthesized with different molar ratios of polyvinylpyrrolidone and $H_2PtCl_6$ solution to improve the dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on carbon black and decrease the size of Pt nanoparticles. From transmission electron microscopy results, Pt nanoparticles of a size of approximately 2 nm were highly dispersed when the polyvinylpyrrolidone concentration was 10mM. The electrochemical activity of the synthesized Pt/C catalysts was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, showing that the as-synthesized Pt-loaded carbon black catalyst had the best activity at a polyvinylpyrrolidone concentration of 10 mM.

  • Multiwall carbon nanotubes are synthesized by using VLS mechanism for the application to $H_2$ gas sensor. MWCNT is not suitable for hydrogen gas sensor due to its low response to the gas. To enhance the gas sensing performance, multiwall carbon nanotubes are coated with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy showed that the synthesized MWCNT were well dispersed with the diameter and wall thickness of approximately 10-30nm and 5nm, respectively. The MWCNT sensor showed the sensitivities of 1.33-9.5% for the $H_2$ concentration of 100-5000ppm at room temperature. These sensitivities are significantly improved to 6.64-46.65% by coating $TiO_2$ nanoparticles to the MWCNT sensor. The mechanisms of $H_2$ gas sensing improvement of the MWCNT sensor coated with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles are discussed.

  • Oil-based nanofluids were prepared by dispersing Ag, graphite and carbon black nanoparticles in lubricating oil. Agglomerated nanoparticles were dispersed evenly with a high-speed bead mill and/or ultrasonic homogenizer, and the surfaces of the nanoparticles were modified simultaneously with several dispersants. Their tribological behaviors were evaluated with a pin-on-disk, disk-on-disk and four-ball EP and wear tester. It is obvious that the optimal combination of nanoparticles, surfactants and surface modification process is very important for the dispersity of nanofluids, and it eventually affects the tribological properties as a controlling factor. Results indicate that a relatively larger size and higher concentration of nanoparticles lead to better load-carrying capacity. In contrast, the use of a smaller size and lower concentration of particles is recommended for reducing the friction coefficient of lubricating oil. Moreover, nanofluids with mixed nanoparticles of Ag and graphite are more suitable for the improvement of load-carrying capacity and antiwear properties.

  • The carbon nano-structured materials could be applied to the fields of advanced fillers, templates, electrode materials, sensor, storage, and absorption materials. The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon nano-particles provide the remarkable properties of high specific surface area, large pore volume, chemical inertness, and good mechanical stability. In this study, well-defined carbon nano-particles were obtained through pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile based particles. The precursor nano-particles were prepared by modified aqueous dispersion polymerization using hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) in a water/ N,N-dimethylformamide mixture media. Synthesized precursor nanoparticles have relatively monodisperse particles ranging 80 ~ 250nm. Stable spherical particles are obtained without coagulum or secondary particles in our system. The characteristic of the carbon nanoparticles were investigated in terms of surface area, morphology, and size distribution.

  • Metal-containing carbon nanocomposites have shown significance promise in the area of energy storage, heterogeneous catalysis and material science because of their morphology and combined properties. Phosphorus-doped carbon nanocomposites with gold nanoparticles were developed by applying a simple impregnation method and metal deposition technique. Gold-phosphorus supported carbon nanocomposites with two sized (25 and 170 nm) were prepared from economical petroleum pitch residue as the carbon source using an advanced silica template method. These nanocomposites will lead to the novel applications in the field of material science with the combined properties of gold, phosphorus and carbon. The newly prepared gold phosphorus supported carbon nanocomposites were fully characterized using a range of different physico-chemical techniques.

  • We studied on the field emission properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) coated with lead selenide (PbSe) nanoparticles. PbSe nanoparticles were uniformly attached on the surface of the DWCNTs by a simple chemical process. The PbSe-coated DWCNTs showed highly increased emission current density and enhanced emission stability over 20 h, compared with raw DWCNTs. We consider that the enhanced field emission properties of PbSe-coated DWCNTs were attributed to the increased field enhancement factor and lowered work function of the emitters.

  • The electrochemical detection of As(III) was investigated on a platinum-iron(III) nanoparticles modified multiwalled carbon nanotube on glassy carbon electrode(nanoPt-Fe(III)/MWCNT/GCE) in 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$. The nanoPt-Fe(III)/MWCNT/GCE was prepared via continuous potential cycling in the range from -0.8 to 0.7 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), in 0.1 M KCl solution containing 0.9 mM $K_2PtCl_6$ and 0.6 mM $FeCl_3$. The Pt nanoparticles and iron oxide were co-electrodeposited into the MWCNT-Nafion composite film on GCE. The resulting electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). For the detection of As(III), the nanoPt-Fe(III)/MWCNT/GCE showed low detection limit of 10 nM (0.75 ppb) and high sensitivity of $4.76\;{\mu}A{\mu}M^{-1}$, while the World Health Organization's guideline value of arsenic for drinking water is 10 ppb. It is worth to note that the electrode presents no interference from copper ion, which is the most serious interfering species in arsenic detection.

  • This study has been investigated on the durability of carbon fiber/epoxy composites (CFRP) in moisture environment. The carbon fiber/epoxy composites were modified to use the nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and titanium oxide. These hybrid composites were exposed to moisture environment for a certain period of time. Weight gain according to immersion time, quasi-static tensile test and micro-graphic characterization were investigated on the samples exposed to moisture environment. Consequently, the weight gains increased with increasing immersion time and weight gain of the hybrid composites was lower than the one of CFRP through the whole immersion time. The tensile strengths decreased with increasing immersion time and tensile strengths of the hybrid composites were higher than the one of CFRP through the whole immersion time. The CFRP were observed more degraded than hybrid compositess in moisture environment. Therefore, it was concluded that the addition of nanoparticles in CFRP could lead to improve the durability in moisture environment.
