  • The vertical distribution and origin of particulate organic matter (POM) were investigated in Shingu reservoir on 4th July (pre-monsoon) and 7th August (post-monsoon) 2006. High turbid water (120 NTU) were found at 4.5 m water depth in postmonsoon period. The average C/N ratio of POM was about 5.70 and 6.96 in surface water and bottom water, respectively in pre-monsoon period, exhibiting the close values to its ratio in phytoplankton cell. However, the average C/N ratio was 7.10 in surface water and 12.81 in bottom water in post-monsoon period. In addition, the ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of POM in pre-monsoon period ranged from -25.1%o to -26.1%o in whole water column, but the ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of POM in post-monsoon period showed relatively wide range between -23.2%o and -27.5%o. The apparently lighter values (average -27.5%o) in near bottom water (4.5 m water depth) demonstrate that POM in high turbid water in post-monsoon period may be derived from the outside terrestrial plants through heavy rainfall during the summer monsoon period. The present study suggests that carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios as well as C/N ratios should be useful indexes to clarify the origin of POM.

  • This study was carried out to examine the quality properties of honey in Korean commercial markets. The moisture content, stable carbon isotope ratio, invert sugar, cane sugar, and hydroxy-methylfurfural (HMF) contents of honey were measured according to the Korea Food Code and AOAC's (Association of Official Analytical Chemists) official methods. The stable carbon isotope ratio ranged from -25.18‰ to -12.60‰, which clearly differed between honey of $C_3$ origin (flower) and $C_4$ origin (artificial). Results of quality measurements revealed a moisture content of 18.12 to 19.70%, fructose content of 36.10 to 43.94%, glucose content of 22.61 to 31.91%, sucrose content of 1.56 to 4.75%, invert sugar content of 64.89 to 72.79%, and HMF content of 4.10 to 78.66 mg/kg. These values demonstrate that the quality of the tested honey meets the standard criteria of the Korean Food Code and Codex. However, it is necessary to reconsider the appropriate criteria for imported honey because it is circulated in the market through a long distribution process.

  • Stable carbon isotope ratio of carbon dioxide (${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$) is used as an important indicator in the researches for global climate change and carbon capture and sequestration technology. The ${\delta}^{13}C$ value has been usually analyzed with Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS). Recently, the use of Laser Absorption Spectrometry (LAS) is increasing because of the cost efficiency and field applicability. The purpose of this study was to suggest practical procedures to prepare laboratory reference gases for ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$ analysis using LAS. $CO_2$ gas was adjusted to have the concentrations within the analytical range. Then, the concentration of $CO_2$ was assessed in a lab approved by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme and the ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$ value was measured by IRMS. When the instrument ran over 12 hours, the ${\delta}^{13}C$ values were drifted up to ${\pm}10$‰ if the concentration of $CO_2$ was shifted up to 1.0% of relative standard deviation. Therefore, periodical investigation of analytical suitability and correction should be conducted. Because ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$ showed the dependency on $CO_2$ concentration, we suggested the equation for calibrating the concentration effect. After calibration, ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$ was well matched with the result of IRMS within ${\pm}0.52$‰.

  • Natural gases generally consist of mainly $^{12}C$ and about 1.1% of $^{13}C$. It is well known that a stable carbon isotope, $^{13}C$, has been widely used for the applications of medical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural tracers. As a result, the development of the separation and concentrating technology of $^{13}C$ can cause of high value-added products and the possibility of the generation of new carbon materials, In general, there are two kinds of approaches to obtain a stable $^{13}C$ isotope by the separation of cryogenic distillation. One is to obtain a concentrated $^{13}CH_4$ isotope from natural gas. Another approach is to get concentrated $^{13}CO$ by distillation followed by a chemical reaction of $CH_4$ and $H_2O$. In this study, rigorous process simulations of the cryogenic distillation have been performed and analyzed for the concentrated separation of $^{13}C$ isotopes from LNG and NG by using commercial process simulator. Due to the very small differences of relative volatilities and separabilities of $^{12}C$ and $^{13}C$, the process design and operation of effective separation and concentration of $^{13}C$ need special strategies and feasibility studies. Utilization of vapor pressure data to acentric factor in SRK equation of state and optimized process conditions have been able to predict for the effective of the separation yield and concentration of $^{13}C$ for the cryogenic distillation. The various operation strategies for both batch and continuous cryogenic distillation are also studied and suggested for the basic design of the process. Development of this study can provide a tool for the effective design and operation of the cryogenic separation of $^{13}C$.

  • Kinetic studies are carried out on the reaction of S-phenyl dithiobenzoates with benzylamines in acetonitrile at 30.0 ℃. Small magnitude of ρX (βX) as well as ρZ (βZ) obtained suggests rate-limiting nucleophilic attack of the thiocarbonyl carbon. This is supported by the unusually small magnitude of ρXY and ρYZ, albeit their signs do not agree with those expected. Moreover, the inverse secondary kinetic isotope effects (kH/kD<1.0) involving deuterated benzylamine nucleophiles are also in line with the proposed mechanism.

  • The Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences plans to produce 225Ac, a therapeutic radio-pharmaceutical for precision oncology, such as prostate cancer. Radon, a radioactive gas, is generated by radium, the target material for producing 225Ac. The radon concentration is expected to be about 2000 Bq·m-3. High-concentration radon-generating facilities must meet radioactive isotope emission standards by lowering the radon concentration. However, most existing studies concerning radon removal using activated carbon filters measured radon levels at concentrations lower than 1000 Bq·m-3. This study measured 222Rn removal of coconut-based activated carbon filter under a high radon concentration of about 2000 Bq·m-3. The 222Rn removal efficiency of activated carbon impregnated with triethylenediamine was also measured. As a result, the 222Rn removal amount of the activated carbon filter showed sufficient removal efficiency in a 222Rn concentration environment of about 2000 Bq·m-3. In addition, despite an expectation of low radon reduction efficiency of Triethylenediamine-impregnated activated carbon, it was difficult to confirm a significant difference in the results. Therefore, it is considered that activated carbon can be used as a radioisotope exhaust filter regardless of whether or not Triethylenediamine is impregnated. The results of this study are expected to be used as primary data when building an air purification system for radiation safety management in facilities with radon concentrations of about 2000 Bq·m-3.

  • Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope results recorded in human bone reflects palaeodiet, nutrition, subsistence and palaeoenvironment. We analyzed the remains of the Naju Yeongdong-ri people, who live at around $6^{th}$ century, excavated from stone chambers and stone-lined tombs. The following results of the analysis of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes were obtained: ${\delta}^{13}C=-19.5{\pm}0.7$‰, ${\delta}^{15}N=9.6{\pm}0.7$‰, (n=9). The value for stable carbon isotopes indicates that the Naju Yeongdong-ri people had a largely $C_3$-based diet such as rice, barley, and beans. On the other hand, the value for stable nitrogen isotopes reflect the consumption of terrestrial animal protein. This study presents new information on the dietary patterns of the Naju Yeongdong-ri people, whose tombs were similar to the Baekje tomb style and their burial type was much like the one followed by the indigenous people of the Yeongsan river basin.

  • Stable carbon isotope analysis was used to investigate the autotrophic carbon sources supporting fisheries in three coastal bay systems of the southern coast of Korea. Carbon isotope ratios (${\delta}^{13}C$) of 31 fish species were analysed and compared with those of a range of potential primary food sources [e.g., seagrass (Zostera marina), seagrass epiphytes, benthic microalgae, macroalgae, marine particulate organic matter (marine POM), marsh plant (Phragmites australis) and terrestrial POM]. ${\delta}^{13}C$ values (range, -16.2${\sim}$-8.3‰) of fishes from the coastal embayment systems were overlapped with those of seagrass (-8.3${\pm}$1.9‰), seagrass epiphytes (-12.4${\pm}$0.6‰), benthic microalgae (-15.4${\pm}$1.6‰) and macroalgae (-16.0${\pm}$1.8‰). In addition, fishes (-12.9${\pm}$1.5‰) from the study area had distinctly higher ${\delta}^{13}C$ values compared to those collected in offshore sites (-17.3${\pm}$0.8‰) of the southern sea of Korea and Nakdong River (-23.2${\pm}$1.6‰). This result indicates that carbon supporting fish communities of these coastal bay systems is mainly derived from the local benthic producers.

  • Kinetic studies on the reactions of five secondary acylic alkyl arenesulfonates with anilines are carried out in acetonitrile at 65.0 ℃. The magnitude of ρXZ determined (ρXZ=0.12-0.13) is slightly greater than that for the alicyclic series (ρXZ=0.11) under the same experimental condition. Ab initio MO results are found to support the slightly tighter transition state expected from the greater magnitude of ρXZ for the acyclic series. Despite the small variations, the magnitude of ρXZ and the theoretical transition state tightness remain relatively constant for the secondary carbon centers. Secondary kinetic isotope effects involving deuterated aniline nucleophiles show a successively smaller kH/kD(<1.0) value for a more sterically crowded reaction center carbon. This is in accord with the later transition state for bond-making predicted by the Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle for the more endothermic nucleophilic substitution reaction. Further support is provided by the results of the AM1 MO calculations on the reactions of secondary alkyl benzenesulfonates with chloride nucleophile.
