  • In this study, the ventilation characteristics is investigated numerically of the longitudinal ventilation method in the curved long road tunnel. Numerical work has been conducted for the jet fan location by utilizing the commercial finite-volume code, FLUENT. Configuration of the tunnel is three-lane, 1600 m long, $120m^2$ in area, 3000 m curvature radius. The velocity profile, distribution of mono-dioxide carbon and flow rate of air are examined in the tunnel. Through the analysis, it is found that the difference of ventilation flow rate Is a little by the jet fan location, but tunnel outlet setup (CASEIII) of jet fans is the most efficient concerned with CO concentration.

  • This study investigated the physiological characteristics of biofilm microorganisms formed onto the different drinking water distribution pipe surfaces. The simulated drinking water distribution pipe system which had several PVC, STS 304, and GS coupons was operated at flow velocity of 0.08 m/sec (Re 1,950) and 0.28 m/sec (Re 7,300), respectively. At velocity of 0.08 m/sec, the number of viable heterotrophic bacteria in the biofilm over the 3 months of operation averaged $3.3{\times}10^4$, $8.7{\times}10^4$, and $7.2{\times}10^3CFU/cm^2$ for PVC, STS, and GS surfaces, respectively. The number of attached heterotrophic bacteria averaged $1.4{\times}10^3$, $5.6{\times}10^2$, and $6.5{\times}10^2CFU/cm^2$ on PVC, STS, and GS surfaces at the system with relatively high flow velocity of 0.28m/sec. The changes of physiological profile of biofilm-forming microorganisms were characterized by community-level assay that utilized the Biolog GN microplates. Biofilms that formed on different pipe surfaces displayed distinctive patterns of community-level physiological profile (CLPP), which reflected the metabolic preference for different carbon sources and/or the utilization of these carbon sources to varying degrees. The CLPP patterns have shown that the metabolic potential of a biofilm community was different depending on the pipe material. The effect of the pipe material was also characterized differently by operation condition such as flow rate. At flow velocity of 0.08 m/sec, the metabolic potential of biofilm microorganisms on GS surface showed lower levels than PVC and STS biofilms. For biofilms on pipe material surfaces exposed to water flowing at 0.28 m/sec, the metabolic potential was in order of PVC>GS>STS. Generally, the levels of the bacterial biofilm's metabolic potentials were shown to be notably higher on pipe surfaces exposed to water at 0.08 m/sec when compared to those on pipe surfaces exposed to water at 0.28 m/sec.

  • In this study, a thermal-gradient chemical vapor infiltration (TG-CVI) process was numerically studied in order to enhance the deposition uniformity within the preform. The computational fluid dynamics technique was used to solve the governing equations for heat transfer and gas flow during the TG-CVI process for two- and three-dimensional (2-D and 3-D) models. The temperature profiles in the 2-D and 3-D models showed good agreement with each other and with the experimental results. The densification process was investigated in a 2-D axisymmetric model. Computation results showed the distribution of the SiC deposition rate within the preform. The results also showed that using two-zone heater gave better deposition uniformity.

  • In the present study, the water desalination across the penta-graphene has been explored by using molecular dynamics simulation. The penta-graphene, a new carbon allotrope, introduced theoretically in 2015. It was shown that this carbon nanostructure is slightly stiffer against buckling in comparison with the graphene nanoribbons. The effect of radius of curvature (ROC) of the membrane, pore size, and applied pressure, on water flow rate, and salt rejection is investigated. It is shown that salt rejection, and the shape of the oxygen density distribution inside the pore can be influenced by the ROC of membrane. Finally, it is shown that the ROC, and pore size of 2D membranes, play an important role in the salt rejection.

  • The heat distribution and internal flow from the efficiency of actual reformer and specification variation, using the computer simulation and experiment about the steam methane reforming reaction which uses the high temperature reformer. Reaction model from steam refoemer uses the steam response model developed by Xu & Froment. As result we supposed the chemical react Steam Reforming(SR), Water Gas Shift(WGS), and Direct Steam Reforming(DSR) from the inner high temperature reformer dominates the response has dissimilar response. According to result of steam methane reforming reaction exam using high temperature reformer, we figured out when Steam Carbon Ratio(SCR) increase, number of hydrogen yield increases but methane decreases. When comparing and examining between design with one inlet and two inlet, result came out one inlet design is more outstanding at thermal distribution and internal flow, hydrogen yield in one inlet design than two inlet design.

  • Most of the fossil power plants firing lower grade coals are challenged with maintaining good combustion conditions while maximizing generation and minimizing emissions. In many cases significant derate, availability losses and increase in unburned carbon levels can be attributed to poor combustion conditions as a result of poorly controlled local fuel and air distribution within the boiler furnace. The poor combustion conditions are directly related to the gas flow deviation in upper furnace and convection tube-bank but a less reported issue related to in large-scale oppose wall fired boilers. In order to develop a on-line combustion monitoring system and suggest an alternative heat flux estimation method at tube bank, which is very useful information for boiler design tool and blower optimizing system, field test was conducted at operating power boiler. During the field test the exhaust gases' temperature and tube metal temperature were monitored by using a spatially distributed sensors grid which located in the boiler's high temperature vestibule region. At these locations. the flue gas flow is still significantly stratified, and air in-leakage is minimal which enables tracing of poor combustion zones to specific burners and over-fire air ports. Test results showed that the flue gas monitoring method is more proper than metal temperature distribution monitoring for real time combustion monitoring because tube metal temp. distribution monitoring method is related to so many variables such as flue gas, internal flow unbalance, spray etc., Heat flux estimation at the tube bank with flue gas temp. and metal temp. data can be alternative method when tube drilling type sensor can't able to use.

  • The cell abundance and marker pigment distribution patterns of picophytoplankton in the Chuuk Lagoon, tropical South Pacific, were analyzed flow cytometry and HPLC. Also, respective contribution of Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus and picoeukaryotes on estimated carbon biomass was evaluated. Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus showed contrasting distributional patterns in the waters of Chuuk Lagoon. Relatively high concentration of Synechococcus was observed near Weno Island but the concentration decreased toward the Northeast Passage. However, Prochlorococcus showed an opposite distributional pattern. Picoeukaryotes did not show any significant variable difference. The range of divinyl chlorophyll a (Chl. $\alpha$) concentration, marker pigment of Prochlorococcus, was $1.2\sim180.3\;ng\;L^{-1}$ and higher concentrations were observed at the stations near the Northeast Passage than stations near Weno Island. This pigment pattern was similar to cell abundance pattern indicating that chi. a2 may be a useful biomass indicator. On the other hand, the range of zeaxanthin concentrations was $61.4\sim135.8\;ng\;L^{-1}$ showing comparatively less significant variation indicating zeaxanthin influence derived from Prochlorococcus. Estimated carbon biomass of Synechococcus contributed 68% of total picophytoplankton biomass. Prochlorococcus and picoeukaryotes respectively contributed 17.1% and 14.9% of total picophytoplankton biomass.

  • In this study, the table flow of fiber reinforced cement composites mixed with CNTs dispersed differently according to the dispersion method was evaluated. The mixture was composed of plain mixture according to the presence or absence of ultrasonic dispersion and PCE-based dispersants A and B of 0.5% and 1.0%, respectively, CNT was mixed with 0.03% of cement weight and fiber was mixed with 1.5% of total volume. As a result of the experiment, NC-A0.5 showed a fluidity similar to that of P without CNT. The fluidity of NC-A0.5 and P-N showed a similar tendency, which is considered to be due to the distribution of evenly dispersed CNT particles without agglomeration between cement particles due to the dispersant. NC-B0.5 showed a similar level of firmness to P-U, but after hitting 250 mm, B Agent seems to have a significant effect on liquidity improvement. Both NC-A1.0 and NC-B1.0 seem to have increased flow due to excessive dispersion.

  • Curved cylindrical structures such as elbows have a non-uniform thickness distribution due to their fabrication process, and as a result have a number of complex mode shapes, including circumferential and axial nodal patterns. In nuclear power plants, material degradation is induced in pipes by flow accelerated erosion and corrosion, causing the wall thickness of carbon steel elbows to gradually thin. The corresponding frequencies of each mode shape vary according to the wall thinning state. Therefore, the thinning state can be estimated by monitoring the varying modal characteristics of the elbow. This study investigated the varying modal characteristics of artificially thinned carbon steel elbows for each thinning state using numerical simulation and experimental methods (MRIT, Multiple Reference Impact Test). The natural frequencies of specified mode shapes were extracted, and results confirmed they linearly decreased with increasing thinning. In addition, by comparing single FRF (Frequency Response Function) data with the results of MRIT, a concise and cost effective thinning estimation method was suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of outdoor heat exchanger for heat pump using carbon dioxide. Two types of fin and tube heat exchangers (2 rows for type A and 3 rows for B) are tested. Both heat exchangers have counter-cross flow and 1-circuit arrangement. Test results such as heat transfer rate, pressure drop characteristics and temperature distribution in the heat exchanger are shown with respect to mass flow rate of refrigerant and frontal air velocity For cooling mode, the minimum temperature difference between air and refrigerant of type B is smaller than that of type A by $1^{circ}C$, but the pressure loss of air side is much higher for type B by $29\%$. It is found that a large temperature gradient of carbon dioxide during gas cooling Process Promotes thermal conduction through tube wall and fins which results in degradation of heat transfer performance. For heating mode operation, type B heat exchanger shows higher heat transfer performance compared to type A. However, because pressure loss of refrigerant side of type B is much greater than that of type A, the refrigerant outlet pressure of type B becomes lower than that of type A.
