In this study, several nickel catalysts for the steam-hydrocarbon reforming process were prepared from various nickel salt, magnesium oxide, alumina and kaolinite. The activity and strength of the catalysts were investigated. 1. The proper composition of the calcined catalysts are: NiO (5-15%)-MgO(10-20%)-$Al_2O_3$(10-40%)-Kaolinite(50-80%). 2. The admixed or cosedimented ingredients of the catalysts was pelletized and calcinated at 1000 or $1150^{\circ}C$. Calcination at $1150^{\circ}C$ for an hour was optimum. 3. The water to oil ratio (W/O) for reforming of hexane should be above 7 mole/mole. As the W/O increases, more carbon dioxide and hydrogen, but less carbon monoxide was produced. Also carbon deposition become lessen at higher W/O. 4. Maximum conversion had attained at about $850^{\circ}C$. As the reaction temperature increases, more carbon monoxide and hydrogen, but less carbon dioxide and lower hydrocarbon was produced. 5. The percent conversion at $850^{\circ}C$ was about 80%, using a catalyst which the nickel oxide content are 5%.
A simulation study on SCR(steam carbon dioxide reforming) in gas-to-liquid(natural gas to Fischer-Tropsch synthetic fuel) process was carried out in order to find optimum reaction conditions for SCR experiment. Optimum operating conditions for SCR process were determined by changing reaction variables such as temperature and $CH_4/steam/CO_2$ feed ratio. Simulation was carried out by Aspen Plus. During the simulation, overall process was assumed to proceed under steady-state conditions. It was also assumed that physical properties of reaction medium were governed by RKS(Redlich-Kwong-Soave) equation. Optimum simulation variables such as temperature and feed ratio were determined by considering $H_2/CO$ ratio for FTS(Fischer-Tropsch synthesis), $CH_4$ conversion, and $CO_2$ conversion. Simulation results showed that optimum reaction temperature and $CH_4/steam/CO_2$ feed ratio in SCR process were $850^{\circ}C$ and 1.0/1.6/0.7, respectively. Under optimum temperature of $850^{\circ}C$, $CH_4$ conversion and $CO_2$ conversion were found to be 99% and 49%, respectively.
CH4/CO2 dry reforming was carried out to make syn gas on the Ni/Al2O3 catalysts calcined at different temperatures. The Ni/Al2O3 (850 $^{\circ}C)$ catalyst gave good activity and stability w hereas the Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst showed lower activity and stability. The NiO/Al2O3 catalyst calcined at $850^{\circ}C$ for 16 h (Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C))$ formed the spinel structure of nickel aluminate, which was confirmed by TPR. The carbon formation rate on the Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C)$ catalyst was very low till 20 h, and then steeply increased with reaction time without decreasing the activity for CH4 reforming. The Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst showed high carbon formation rate at the initial reaction time and then, the rate nearly stopped with continuous decreasing the activity for CH4 reforming. Even though the amount of carbon deposition on the Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C)$ catalyst was higher than that on the Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst, the activity for CH4ing was also high, which could be attributed to the different type of the carbon formed on the catalyst surface.

The methane reforming with $CO_2$ and steam for manufacture of synthesis gas over $Ni/ZrO_2$ catalyst was investigated. Mixed reforming carried out $CO_2$ dry reforming with $O_2$ and steam for development of DME process in pilot plant. To improve a catalyst deactivation by coke formation, the mixed reforming added carbon dioxide and steam as a oxidizer of the methane reforming was suggested. The result of experiments over commercial catalyst in $CO_2$ dry reforming has shown that the catalyst activity decrease rapidly after 20 hours. In case of $NiO-MgO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst, the deactivation of 20 percent after 30 hours was occurred. The activity of Ni/C catalyst still was not decreased dramatically after 100 hours. The effect of $H_2$ reforming with steam over $Ni/CO_2$ catalyst obtained the optimal conversion of methane and carbon dioxide, and could be produced synthesis gas at ratio of $H_2/CO$ under 1.5.

The amount of biogas increases as the amount of organic waste increases. Recently, biogas from organic waste have been made much efforts to utilize as a energy. In particular, the concentration of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ generated from sewage sludge and livestock manure treatment are 60-70% and 30-35%, and $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ generated from food wastes are 60-80% and 20-40%. In case of landfill gas, $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ have a concentration of 40-60% and 40-60% respectively. Therefore, in order to use the biogas more widely, it is necessary to convert the biogas to methanol, LNG or DME. In this study, experiments were conducted to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide through various biogas reforming reactions on $Ni/Ce-ZrO_2/Al2O3$ catalysts. The experiment of synthetic gas synthesis was carried out on a wide concentrations of methane and carbon dioxide, which were the major constituents of biogas from various organic wastes. The effect of $(O_2+CO_2)/CH_4$ (=R') on the yields of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, the conversion rate of methane and carbon dioxide was investigated. Also simulation for syngas synthesis on the $CO_2$ reforming of $CH_4$ was computed by employing total Gibbs free energy minimization method using PRO/II simulator, and compared with the experimental results on wet and dry reforming reaction of biogas.
Hydrogen could be produced from any substance containing hydrogen atoms, such as water, hydrocarbon (HC) fuels, acids or bases. Hydrocarbon fuels couold be converted to hydrogen-rich gas through reforming process for hydrogen production. Even though fuel cell have high efficiency with pure hydrogen from gas tank, it is more beneficial to generate hydrogen from city gas (mainly methane) in residential application such as domestic or office environments. Thus hydrogen is generated by reforming process using hydrocarbon. Unfortunately, the reforming process for hydrogen production is accompanied with unavoidable impurities. Impurities such as CO, $CO_2$, $H_2S$, $NH_3$, and $CH_4$ in hydrogen could cause negative effects on fuel cell performance. Those effects are kinetic losses due to poisoning of electrode catalysts, ohmic losses due to proton conductivity reduction including membrane and catalyst ionomer layers, and mass transport losses due to degrading catalyst layer structure and hydrophobic property. Hydrogen produced from reformer eventually contains around 73% of $H_2$, 20% or less of $CO_2$, 5.8% of less of $N_2$, or 2% less of $CH_4$, and 10ppm or less of CO. Most impurities are removed using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process to get high purity hydrogen. However, high purity hydrogen production requires high operation cost of reforming process. The effect of carbon dioxide on fuel cell performance was investigated in this experiment. The performance of PEM fuel cell was investigated using current vs. potential experiment, long run (10 hr) test, and electrochemical impedance measurement when the concentrations of carbon dioxide were 10%, 20% and 30%. Also, the concentration of impurity supplied to the fuel cell was verified by gas chromatography (GC).
As global warming accelerates, greenhouse gas reduction becomes more important. Carbon dioxide dry reforming is a promising green-house gas reduction technology that can obtain CO and $H_2$ which are high value-added materials by utilizing $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ which are greenhouse gases. However, there is a significant coking problem during operation of the dry reforming reactor. Because the carbon dioxide dry reforming is a strong endothermic reaction, the temperature of the reactor drops near the reactor inlet and causes coke formation. To solve this problem, it is important to ensure that the reaction takes place in a temperature range where coke production is minimized. In this study, we proposed a design method that can maintain reaction temperature in the region where the coke is rarely generated by using the new catalyst configuration method. The design method also optimizes the reactor by solving the optimization problem which minimizes the reactor length for a given reaction conversion by using the fuel flow rate, catalyst density, and output temperature by section as optimization variables.

Greenhouse gas emissions have a profound effect on global warming. Various environmental regulations have been introduced to reduce the emissions. The largest amount of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, is produced in the steel industry. To decrease carbon dioxide emission, hydrogen-based iron oxide reduction, which can replace carbon-based reduction has received a great attention. Iron production generates various by-product gases, such as cokes oven gas (COG), blast furnace gas (BFG), and Linz-Donawitz gas (LDG). In particular, COG, due to its high concentrations of hydrogen and methane, can be reformed to become a major source of hydrogen for reducing iron oxide. Nevertheless, continuous COG cannot be supplied under actual operation condition of steel industry. To solve this problem, this study proposed to use two alternative COG-based fuel mixtures; one with natural gas and the other with biogas. Reforming study on two types of mixed gas were carried out to evaluate catalyst performance under a variety of operating conditions. In addition, methane conversion and product composition were investigated both theoretically and experimentally.
