  • The optimum cure cycle and carbonization condition were selected by the DSC and TGA analysis and green bodies were prepared by the method of hot press molding and then carbonized up to 140$0^{\circ}C$. Additives such as graphite powder, carbon black, milled carbon fiber and carbon fiber mat, which were considered to be effective in improving the interlaminar shear strength, were also added to check their effects on the density and porosity of products. Then, their relations with mechanical properties such as ILSS and flexural strength were investigated. The composites added 9 vol% of graphite powder showed the greatest values of ILSS and flexural strength. Otherwise, in case of adding carbon black, the composites showed the slight improvement of ILSS at its contents of 3 vol% but the flexural strength was decreased. When milled carbon fiber and carbon fiber mat were added, the lack of resin and the heat shrinkage during the carbonization caused the delamination, resulting in decreasing the density, ILSS and flexural strength.

  • We have examined conduction properties and electrochemical properties of MCMB 6-28 and MPCF 3000. As results, electrical conductivity of carbon decreased with increasing the number of intercalated lithium ion. MCMB and MPCF showed reversible redox reaction, and the potentials of the oxidized and reduced peaks were 0.3V and 0V, respectively. First discharge capacity of MCMB was 190㎃f/g and that of MPCF was 220㎃h/g. MPCF has good properties for lithium secondary battery.

  • The fuel cell is one of promising environment-friendly energy sources for the next generation. The bipolar plate is a major component of the PEM fuel cell stack, which takes a large portion of stack cost. In this study, as alternative materials for bipolar plate of PEM fuel cells, graphite composites were fabricated by compression molding. Graphite particles mixed with epoxy resin were used as the main substance to provide electric conductivity To achieve desired electrical properties, specimens made with different mixing ratio, processing pressure and temperature were tested. To increase mechanical strength, one or two layers of woven carbon fabric were added to the graphite and resin composite. Thus, the composite material was consisted of three phases: graphite particles, carbon fabric, and epoxy resin. By increasing mixing ratio of graphite, fabricated pressure and process temperature, the electric conductivity of the composite was improved. The results of tensile test showed that the tensile strength of the two-phase graphite composite was about 4MPa, and that of three-phase composite was increased to 57MPa. As surface properties, contact an91e and surface roughness were tested. Graphite composites showed contact angles higher than $90^{\circ}$, which mean low surface energy. The average surface roughness of the composite specimens was $0.96{\mu}m$.

  • Aluminum alloy matrix may be used for manufacturing lighter automobiles. However, galvanic corrosion may occur between the rivet joint combining aluminum alloy matrix and a CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) laminate. The possibility of galvanic corrosion may be investigated by measuring galvanic couple currents. Two types of galvanic current measuring methods were used. One method is to use potentiodynamic polarization curves and the other is the ZRA (zero resistance ammeter) method. For galvanic corrosion experiments graphite, a major component of CFRP, was used with carbon steel (rivets) and 6061 aluminum alloys. Regardless of carbon steel, Ni deposited carbon steel, and 316L stainless steels we also investigated the possibility of reduction in galvanic corrosion. Results revealed that even though Ni deposited carbon steel or 316L stainless rivet may slightly increase galvanic current density between those and Al matrix, substitute rivets for carbon steel may be considerably useful for reducing overall galvanic corrosion.

  • A bipolar plate is an important component in a fuel cell in the sense of cost and weight. This study aimed at developing highly conductive, lightweight, and low cost bipolar plates. Hybrid carbons filled poly(phenylene sulfide)(PPS) composite bipolar plates were prepared by using the compression molding technique. Various types and amounts of conducting carbon fillers such as graphite, carbon black, carbon fibers, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were adopted for the composites. Electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of the composites were measured in order to investigate effects of each components of fillers. When the graphite is only used as a conducting filler, the electrical conductivity of the composites increases with increasing the content, but the flexural strength decreases dramatically. However, for CNTs and carbon fibers, the flexural strength initially increases and then decreases with increasing the amount of the conducting fillers. The amount of graphite corresponding to the peak of flexural strength was moved to lower content with increasing the amount of CNTs or carbon fiber. When hybrid conducting fillers such as fibrous and particulate fillers were used, the synergy effect in mechanical and electrical properties was observed.

  • Graphite fibers are materials with a high specific modulus that have attracted much interest in the aerospace industry, but their high manufacturing cost and low yield are still problems that prevent their wide applications in practice. This paper presents a laser-based process for graphitization of carbon fiber (CF) and explores the effect of laser radiation on the microstructure of CF. The obtained Raman spectra indicate that the outer surface of CF evolves from turbostratic structures into a three-dimensional ordered state after being irradiated by a laser. The X-ray diffraction data revealed that the growth of crystallite was parallel to the fiber axis, and the interlayer spacing $d_{002}$ decreased from 0.353 to 0.345 nm. The results of scanning electron microscopy revealed that the surface of irradiated CFs was rougher than that of the unirradiated ones and there were scale-like small fragments that had peeled off from the fibers. The tensile modulus increased by 17.51% and the Weibull average tensile strength decreased by 30.53% after being irradiated by a laser. These results demonstrate that the laser irradiation was able to increase the graphitization degree of the CFs, which showed some properties comparable to graphite fibers.

  • Chop molding composites and 2D carbon/carbon composites were manufactured by hot press molding method. Phenol resin of novolac type was used for matrix precursor and PAN-based carbon, PAN-based graphite and pitch-based carbon fiber were used for reinforcement and boron oxide was used for oxidation retardant. All of the composites were treated by $2000^{\circ}C$ and $2400^{\circ}C$ graphitization process, respectively. After graphitization process, amount of a boron residue in carbon/carbon composites is much according to irregularity of used raw materials. Under the presence of boron in carbon/carbon composites, catalytic effect of boron was a little at $2000^{\circ}C$ graphitization temperature. However, it was quite at $2400^{\circ}C$ graphitization.

  • In this study, the fracture behavior by low velocity impact damage and the tendencies of impact energy absorption were investigated. Low velocity impact tests were performed using a mini tower drop weight impact tester, and graphite powder, carbon black and milled carton fiber were chosen as additives. Addition of graphite powder increased the maximum load and maintained the stress long until the total penetration happened. At the content of 9 vol%, they showed the maximum of 42% improvement in impact strength compared composites containing no additives. At the test with low impact energy of 0.4 J, impact energy was consumed by delamination in the composite containing no additives, however, as graphite contents increased, the tendency of failure changed to the penetration of the specimen.

  • The effect of physico-electrochemical properties of carbon bipolar plate(BPP) on hydrogen and formic acid fuel cell performance has been investigated. BPP made of conventional graphite and carbon fiber composite were compared with the factors of interfacial contact resistance (ICR), corrosion behaviours, and hydrophobicity. Among them, the ICR of carbon fiber composite BPP has 50% higher than conventional graphite and the surface of carbon fiber composite BPP became rougher due to weaker corrosion resistance. Fuel cell performance was strongly dependent of ICR value of carbon bipolar plate.
