  • When a ship is travelling in following seas, the encounter frequency is reduced to be very low. In that case broaching phenomenon is most likely to occur, and it may be due to wave exciting forces acting on ships. It is thought that the wave exciting forces acting on ships in following seas almost consist of two components. One is hydrostatic force due to Froude-Krylov hypothesis, and the other is hydrodynamic lift force due to orbital motion of water particles below the wave surface. In the present paper, the emphasis is laid upon wave exciting sway force, yaw moment and roll moment acting on ships in following seas. The authers take the case that the component of ship speed in the direction of wave propagation is equal to the wave celerity, i.e., the encounter frequency is zero. Hydrostatic force components are calculated by line integral method on Lewis form plane, and hydrodynamic lift components are calculated by lifting surface theory. Furthermore captive model tests are carried out in regular following waves generated by means of a wave making board. Through the comparison between calculated and measured values, it is confirmed that the wave exciting forces acting on ships in following seas can be predicted in terms of present method to a certain extent.

  • In the existence of motion, azimuth phase error due to accuracy limitation of GPS/IMU and system delay is unavoidable and it is essential to apply autofocus to estimate and compensate the azimuth phase error. In this paper, autofocus algorithm using MWLS(Modified WLS) is proposed. It shows the robust performance compared with original WLS using new target selection/sorting metric and iterative azimuth phase estimation technique. SAR raw data obtained in a captive flight test is used to validate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • Three cases of hepatic encephalopathy were diagnosed in scimitar-horned oryxs housed at a zoo. Administration of amino acid and ornithine-aspartate fluid therapy via an intravenous injection decreased serum levels of ammonia and liver enzymes in cases 1 and 2. Further, additional oral ingestion of non-absorbable disaccharide lactulose to eliminate intestinal nitrogenous products enabled recovery of two oryxs. However, in case 3, the serum levels of ammonia and liver enzymes increased even after treatment, and the oryx died. Necropsy revealed cecum and colon compaction due to stiff dried feces, and this condition could have an adverse effect on increased blood ammonia levels that may have caused mortality. Overconsumption of pellets may have been the primary cause of hepatic encephalopathy. Thus, a fiber rich diet with decreased amount of pellets is needed to prevent hepatic encephalopathy, since the normal diet of scimitar-horned oryxs is rich in fiber.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform retrospective data collection of the sites and types of fracture in raptors in order to enable wildlife veterinarians to manage cases of fracture more effectively. This study included raptors with fracture, rescued between January 2013 and August 2015 in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region in Republic of Korea. The data were collected from the medical reports and radiographic findings acquired from designated animal hospitals for wild animals, the Dongin Animal Hospital and the Kyungpook wildlife rescue center. The distribution, sites, and types of fracture, and outcomes of rescue and fracture management of the raptors included in this study were analyzed. Among the 31 birds included in this study, Falco tinnunculus was the most common species. Of the 42 sites of fracture, the diaphysis of the humerus was the most common site of fracture, and comminuted fracture was the most common type. Of the 31 birds, 13 were treated surgically. Intramedullary pinning with bandaging was the most common method of surgical treatment. While 7 of the 13 birds died, 2 were reintroduced into the wild, and 4 were kept captive. This study presents the evaluation of the data on the species, sites, and types of fracture, and treatment procedures and outcomes in raptors with fractures, rescued in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. The findings of this study could serve as a basic database for the treatment of fracture in raptors.

  • In this paper, the automatic depth control system and the collision avoidance system of the Manta UUV have been established in vertical and horizontal plane. The PID control theory and the Fuzzy theory are adopted in this system. The 6-DOF MMG model had been established by theoretical calculations and captive model test results. The depth control simulation results have been fully presented. The collision risks of the UUV had calculated by the fuzzy theory with the virtual sonar system. Finally, the automatic depth control system and the collision avoidance simulation system of Manta UUV have been fully developed and simulated.

  • RANS solver has been developed to solve the flows past a ship with a drift angle. The solver employs a finite volume method for the spatial discretization and Euler implicit method for the time integration. Turbulent flows are simulated by Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model. Developed solver is applied to analyze the hydrodynamic forces and flows of two tankers with a same forebody but different afterbodies. The computed flows and hydrodynamic forces are compared with the measured flows and captive model test data. The computed results show good agreements with experimental data and show clearly the effects of stern hull form on the hydrodynamic forces and the flows.

  • IMO standards for ship manoeuvrability were applied from January 1, 2004. Though model test or sea trial in full load condition is needed, it is not always possible to get such data for every ships. Therefore it is required to study the effect of loading conditions on ship manoeuvrability. Approximate formulae to estimate the hydrodynamic forces acting on a ship and the 2nd overshoot angle of $10^{\circ}$/$10^{\circ}$ zig-zag test in certain loading condition are proposed in this study These were derived from the results of model test and sea trial data. Captive model tests for 7 ships with 15 different loading conditions and sea trial data including free running test of 6 cases were used. Compared with experiment data and prediction formulae already proposed by others, the approximate formulae in this study show good agreement with model test results.

  • The dung beetle, Gymnopleurus mopsus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), is one of endangered species in South Korea. It was last recorded in 1971. To restore this species, we introduced G. mopsus populations from eastern and southern regions of Mongolia in July 2019 and August 2019, respectively. One of the main tasks for the restoration of endangered insects is to develop breeding techniques to eventually incorporate these insects into the restoration system. In a series of laboratory experiments, we investigated effects of short-term hibernation periods on life-history traits of G. mopsus. Adult G. mopsus that had hibernated for 30, 60, and 90 days had lower survival rates than adults that had hibernated for 120 days. We also compared developmental time of these four experimental groups and found a significant difference in the egg - phase. However, the duration of hibernation did not affect the fecundity, brood-ball size, or body size of F1 adults. Follow-up studies are currently being conducted to further investigate the effect of a short-term hibernation period on population growth of G. mopsus under laboratory conditions.

  • This paper investigates the influence of the Circulating Water Channel (CWC) side wall and support struts on the hydrodynamic coefficient prediction for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) experiments. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method has been used to model the CWC tests. The hydrodynamic coefficients estimated by CFD are compared with the prediction of experiments to verify the accuracy of simulations. In order to study the effect of side wall on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the AUV in full scale captive model tests, this paper uses the CWC non-dimensional width parameters to quantify the correlation between the CWC width and hydrodynamic coefficients of the chosen model. The result shows that the hydrodynamic coefficients tend to be constant with the CWC width parameters increasing. Moreover, the side wall has a greater effect than the struts.
