  • Low field NMR was employed to discriminate the geographical origin of sesame seeds from Sudan, China, and Korea. Sudan sesame seeds had the lowest contents of moisture and crude fat. Chemical components of Korean and Chinese sesame seeds were similar, whereas relaxation times $(T_1-IR,\;T_1-SR)$ measeured through spin-lattice relaxation pluse techniques using 20 MHz NMR showed significant difference (p0.05). Canonical discriminant analysis could be used to identify the habitat of sesame seeds with over 90% accuracy of NMR results. Non-destructive and fast NMR techniques can be applied to classify Korean sesame seeds from those of other origins.

  • Vegetational data from Mt. Gyeryong and Deokyu in central Korea were analysed in relation to 15 environmental variables. Two multivariate methods were applied : two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) for classification and detrended canonical correspondence analysis(DCCA), a recent technique which extracts ordination axes that can be related to environmental factors. The relationship between the distribution of dominant species of forest vegetation and soil condition in Mt. Gyeryong and Deokyu was investigated by analyzing elevation and soil nutrition gradient. Quercus mongolica forest was distributed in the high elevation and good nutrition area, Carpinzrs laxiflora and Fraxinus rhynclzophylla forest in the medium elevation and good nutrition area, Piszus densiflora-Quercus mongolica and Quercus variabilis forest in the medium elevation and medium nutrition area, Styrax jabozaica forest in the low elevation and medium nutrition area, and Pinus densiflora forest in the low elevation and poor nutrition area. The dominant compositional gradient related to elevation.

  • Even though a rapid development of modem medical science, paralysis disease is a highly dangerous and murderous disease. Shin et al. (1978) constructed the diagnosis expert system which identify a type of the paralysis disease from symptoms of a paralysis disease patients by using the canonical discriminant analysis. The decision tree-based analysis, however, has advantages over the method used in Shin et al. (1998), such as it does not need assumptions - linearity and normality, and suggest appropriate diagnosis procedure which is easily explained. In this paper, we applied the decision tree to construct the model which Identify a type of the paralysis disease.

  • Recently, developments of process monitoring system in order to detect and diagnose process abnormalities has got the spotlight in process systems engineering. Normal data obtained from processes provide available information of process characteristics to be used for modeling, monitoring, and control. Since modern chemical and environmental processes have high dimensionality, strong correlation, severe dynamics and nonlinearity, it is not easy to analyze a process through model-based approach. To overcome limitations of model-based approach, lots of system engineers and academic researchers have focused on statistical approach combined with multivariable analysis such as principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares (PLS), and so on. Several multivariate analysis methods have been modified to apply it to a chemical process with specific characteristics such as dynamics, nonlinearity, and so on.This paper discusses about missing value estimation and sensor fault identification based on process variable reconstruction using dynamic PCA and canonical variate analysis.

  • Probabilistic prediction methods of landslides which have been developed in recent can be reliable with premise of detailed survey and analysis based on deep and special knowledge. However, landslide susceptibility should also be analyzed with some reliable and simple methods by various people such as government officials and engineering geologists who do not have deep statistical knowledge at the moment of hazards. Therefore, this study suggests an evaluation chart of landslide susceptibility with high reliability drawn by accurate statistical approaches, which the chart can be understood easily and utilized for both specialists and non-specialists. The evaluation chart was developed by a quantification method based on canonical correlation analysis using the data of geology, topography, and soil property of landslides in Korea. This study analyzed field data and laboratory test results and determined influential factors and rating values of each factor. The quantification analysis result shows that slope angle has the highest significance among the factors and elevation, permeability coefficient, porosity, lithology, and dry density are important in descending order. Based on the score assigned to each evaluation factor, an evaluation chart of landslide susceptibility was developed with rating values in each class of a factor. It is possible for an analyst to identify susceptibility degree of a landslide by checking each property of an evaluation factor and calculating sum of the rating values. This result can also be used to draw landslide susceptibility maps based on GIS techniques.

  • We examined technological forecasting of extended TFDEA(Technological Forecasting with Data Envelopment Analysis) and thereby apply the extended method to the technological forecasting problem of main battle tank. The TFDEA has the possibility of using comparatively inefficient DMUs(Decision Making Units) because it is based on DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis), which usually leads to multiple efficient DMUs. Therefore, TFDEA may result in incorrect technological forecasting. Instead of using the simple DEA, we incorporated the concept of Super-efficiency, Cross-efficiency, and CCCA(Constrained Canonical Correlation Analysis) into the TFDEA respectively, and applied each method to the case study of main battle tank using verifiable practical data sets. The comparative analysis shows that the use of CCCA with TFDEA results in very comparable prediction accuracies with respect to MAE(Mean Absolute Error), MSE(Mean Squared Error), and RMSE(Root Mean Squared Error) than using the concept of Super-efficiency and Cross-efficiency.

  • Transient receptor potential canonical 4 (TRPC4) channel is a nonselective calcium-permeable cation channels. In intestinal smooth muscle cells, TRPC4 currents contribute more than 80% to muscarinic cationic current (mIcat). With its inward-rectifying current-voltage relationship and high calcium permeability, TRPC4 channels permit calcium influx once the channel is opened by muscarinic receptor stimulation. Polyamines are known to inhibit nonselective cation channels that mediate the generation of mIcat. Moreover, it is reported that TRPC4 channels are blocked by the intracellular spermine through electrostatic interaction with glutamate residues (E728, E729). Here, we investigated the correlation between the magnitude of channel inactivation by spermine and the magnitude of channel conductance. We also found additional spermine binding sites in TRPC4. We evaluated channel activity with electrophysiological recordings and revalidated structural significance based on Cryo-EM structure, which was resolved recently. We found that there is no correlation between magnitude of inhibitory action of spermine and magnitude of maximum current of the channel. In intracellular region, TRPC4 attracts spermine at channel periphery by reducing access resistance, and acidic residues contribute to blocking action of intracellular spermine; channel periphery, E649; cytosolic space, D629, D649, and E687.

  • An account of second-order fractional-step methods and boundary conditions for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The present work has aimed at (i) identification and analysis of all possible splitting methods of second-order splitting accuracy; and (ii) determination of consistent boundary conditions that yield second-order accurate solutions. It has been found that only three types (D, P and M) of splitting methods called the canonical methods are non-degenerate so that all other second-order splitting schemes are either degenerate or equivalent to them. Investigation of the properties of the canonical methods indicates that a method of type D is recommended for computations in which the zero divergence is preferred, while a method of type P is better suited to the cases when highly-accurate pressure is more desirable. The consistent boundary conditions on the tentative velocity and pressure have been determined by a procedure that consists of approximation of the split equations and the boundary limit of the result. The pressure boundary condition is independent of the type of fractional-step methods. The consistent boundary conditions on the tentative velocity were determined in terms of the natural boundary condition and derivatives of quantities available at the current timestep (to be evaluated by extrapolation). Second-order fractional-step methods that admit the zero pressure-gradient boundary condition have been derived. The boundary condition on the new tentative velocity becomes greatly simplified due to improved accuracy built in the transformation.

  • Canonical correlation biplot is a useful biplot for giving a graphical description of the data matrix which consists of the association between two sets of variables, for detecting patterns and displaying results found by more formal methods of analysis. Nevertheless, when some values are missing in data, most biplots are not directly applicable. To solve this problem, we estimate the missing data using the median, mean, EM algorithm and MCMC imputation methods according to missing rates. Even though we estimate the missing values of biplot of incomplete data, we have different shapes of biplots according to the imputation methods and missing rates. Therefore we use a RMS(root mean square) which was proposed by Shin et al. (2007) and PS(procrustes statistic) for measuring and comparing the shape variability between the original biplots and the estimated biplots.
