  • We present an efficient technique, bidirectioanl inertial maximum cost search technique, for th edetection and segmentation of circular shaped objects using the spatial information around the neighborhood of the boundary candidates. This technique searches boundary candidates using local pixdl information such as pixel value and its direction. And then to exclude pseudo-boundary caused by shadows or noises, the local contrast is defined between the clique of the boundary candidates and the cliques of the background. In order to effectively segment circular shaped boundary, the technique also uses the curvature based on trigonometirc function which determines circular shaped boundary segments. Since the proposed technique is applied to the pixel cliques instead of a pixel itself, it is proposed method can easily find out circular boundaries form iamges of the PCB containing circular shaped parts and the trees with round fruits compared to boundary detection by using the pixel information and the laplacian curvature.

  • Cognitive Spelling Therapist generates the candidates for correction of one-letter misspelling words, which correspond to over 80 % of the misspelling words. One-letter misspelling can be divided into four categories, and for each categories Cognitive Spelling Therapist copes them with seperate cognitive therapies. Each therapy is based on cognitive causes of misspelling: figural confusion, pronunciation confusion, and keyboard confusion. Cognitive Spelling Therapist generates three candidates for correction in average. After we tested the correctness of candidates with 185 misspelled words randomly sampled from two typist for two months, Cognitive Spell Therapist showed 97.5 % correction for substitution errors, while insertion, deletion, and transposition errors were perfectly corrected.

  • We present elemental abundances of 412 blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) at z=0.2~0.5 using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7. The gas-phase nitrogen to oxygen abundance ratios (N/O) of sample galaxies increase as the oxygen to hydrogen abundance ratios (O/H) decrease. This indicates that the nitrogen is more enriched than the oxygen. We found that there is a noticeable distinction between the merger candidates and the isolated galaxies. Merging candidates show more enrichment of nitrogen abundance compared to isolated galaxies. On the other hand, neon and oxygen abundances for merging candidates are slightly lower than the isolated systems. We discuss the main cause of these trends with internal mixing and mass loss by fast rotation of young massive stars. We also discuss the environmental effect to the relation between specific star formation rate and galaxy mass.

  • Sixty-four EC-6 teacher candidates were asked to elaborate on the method they used when interrupting seven mathematical pictorial models. The instrument used was research designed but modeled after a 4th grade released state tests. This study was conducted in the southern part of the United States. A panel of experts worked with the researcher to determine the most appropriate initial approach to interrupting the mathematical pictorial model. The pictorial models examined such concepts as measurement, place value and time. Since the questions were on a 4th grade level, it was expected that the teacher candidates would score 100%, however, this was not the case. The results will be given in the paper as each question is discussed. The results of the survey are being used to develop teaching modules for teacher candidates in mathematics methodology classes.

  • This study is to diagnose the present superintendent election and education standing committee system for improvement based upon Constitutional values of local education system. The findings are the followings. To improve the election system of superintendent it is recommended to maintain present election system rather than change it drastically since the present system ensure relatively more autonomy, expertise, and political neutrality of local education system. However, the qualification such as years of educational experiences of superintendent candidates need to be restored. Regarding education standing committee it suggest that all or at least 2/3 members need to be educational representatives rather than general representatives. For superintendent as well as education standing committee election, it needs to elaborate the vote ballet such as change of candidates name order by voting place to reduce its effects to election results. It also needs to strengthen public management of election such as expenses and TV forums among candidates.

  • Many isolated word recognition systems may generate non-similar words for recognition candidates because they use only acoustic information. The previous study [1,2] investigated several techniques which can exclude non-similar words from N-best candidate words by applying Levenstein distance measure. This paper discusses the various improving techniques of removing non-similar recognition results. The mentioned methods include comparison penalties or weights, phone accuracy based on confusion information, weights candidates by ranking order and partial comparisons. Through experimental results, it is found that some proposed method keeps more accurate recognition results than the previous method's results.

  • In this paper, we introduce a fixer attaching robot system which is used to attach several fixers to a TV cabinet. It is necessary to automate the fixer attaching process for two reasons. One is that the process is very harmful because very strong ultraviolet rays are used in that process. The other is that the productivity and the overall quality of the end-product are determined by the fixer attaching process. We proposed 9 candidates for the robot system to be used in the fixer attaching process. Then we simulated cycle time for each of the 9 candidates with considering physical constraints. We also considered other aspects such as the easiness of implementation, possible interference with other mechanical structure, and cost etc. to choose one of the 9 candidates. We implemented the chosen robot system and adopted it in a TV manufacturing process.

  • This paper proposes the method to extract face components without using the color information and the motion information in a gray image. A laplacian pyramid of the original image is built. Eye and nose candidates are extracted using only the gray information in a low resolution laplacian image and pairs are found that consist of two eye candidates and a nose one. At full resolution, horizontal and vortical edges are found in the regions of face components which are established using the candidates. Using those edge informations, face components are extracted. The experiments have been performed for images with various sizes and positions of face, and show very encouraging result.

  • We conducted a survey of open clusters within 1 kpc from the Sun using the astrometric and photometric data of the Gaia Data Release 2. We found 655 cluster candidates by visual inspection of the stellar distributions in proper motion space and spatial distributions in l - b space. All of the 655 cluster candidates have a well defined main-sequence except for two candidates if we consider that the main sequence of very young clusters is somewhat broad due to differential extinction. Cross-matching of our 653 open clusters with known open clusters in various catalogs resulted in 207 new open clusters. We present the physical properties of the newly discovered open clusters. The majority of the newly discovered open clusters are of young to intermediate age and have less than ~50 member stars.

  • Chemical abundance ratios of ultra metal-poor (UMP; [Fe/H] < -4.0) stars can provide important constraints on the early chemical enrichment of the Milky Way (MW), associated with the nucleosynthesis processes that occurred during the evolution of their progenitors, which are presumably the first generation of stars. Despite their importance, only about thirty UMP stars have been discovered thus far. In an effort to identify such stars additionally, we selected UMP candidates from low-resolution (R ~ 2000) spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), and obtained with Gemini/GRACES high-resolution (R ~ 40,000) spectra of 15 UMP candidates. In this study, we present the results of the chemical abundance analysis of the UMP candidates. Furthermore, we compare the abundance patterns of our UMP stars with those of various metal-poor stars from literature to understand the early chemical evolution of the MW.
