  • Non-intrusive methods based on active remote IR illumination for eye tracking is important for many applications of vision-based man-machine interaction. One problem that has plagued those methods is their sensitivity to lighting condition change. This tends to significantly limit their scope of application. In this paper, we present a new real-time eye detection and tracking methodology that works under variable and realistic lighting conditions. eased on combining the bright-pupil effect resulted from IR light and the conventional appearance-based object recognition technique, our method can robustly track eyes when the pupils are not very bright due to significant external illumination interferences. The appearance model is incorporated in both eyes detection and tracking via the use of support vector machine and the mean shift tracking. Additional improvement is achieved from modifying the image acquisition apparatus including the illuminator and the camera.

  • The detection method of curves for the lanes which is powerful for the variation by utilizing the lane variation vector and cardinal spline on the inverse perspective transformation screen images which do not required the camera parameters are suggested in this paper. This method detects the lane area by setting the expected lane area in the s frame and next s+1 frame where the inverse perspective transformation and entire process of the lane filter are adapted, and expects the points of lane location in the next frames with the lane variation vector calculation from the detected lane areas. The scan area is set from the nextly expected lane position and new lane positions are detected within these areas, and the lane variation vectors are renewed with the detected lane position and the lanes are detected with application of cardinal spline for the control points inside the lane areas. The suggested method is a powerful method for curved lane detection, but it was adopted to the linear lanes too. It showed an excellent lane detection speed of about 20ms in processing a frame.

  • In this paper, we propose the 3D shape reconstruction method that combine the mosaic method and the active stereo matching using the laser beam. The active stereo matching method detects the position information of the irradiated laser beam on object by analyzing the color and brightness variation of left and right image, and acquires the depth information in epipolar line. The mosaic method extracts feature point of image by using harris comer detection and matches the same keypoint between the sequence of images using the keypoint descriptor index method and infers correlation between the sequence of images. The depth information of the sequence image was calculated by the active stereo matching and the mosaic method. The merged depth information was reconstructed to the 3D shape information by wrapping and blending with image color and texture. The proposed reconstruction method could acquire strong the 3D distance information, and overcome constraint of place and distance etc, by using laser slit beam and stereo camera.

  • In this study, a crab robot is implemented in H/W based on four-bar linkage mechanism and Jansen mechanism, and its kinematics is analysed. A vision camera is attached to the mechanism, which makes the proposed robot a kind of biologically inspired robot for image acquisition. Three ultrasonic sensors are adopted for obstacle avoidance. In addition, the biologically inspired robot can achieve the mission appointed by a programmer outside, based on RF and Blue-tooth communication module. For the design and implementation of a crab robot, it is need to get joint variable, a foot point, and their relation. Thus, the proposed kinematic analysis is very important process for the design and implementation of legged robots.

  • It is difficult for the movement detection of an object through a camera to detect exact movement because of unnecessary noises and changes of the light. It can be recognized as a background, when there is no movement after the inflow of an object. Therefore, It is necessary to fast search algorithm for tracking and extract of object that is realtime image. In this thesis, we evaluate the difference of the input vision based on initial image and replace some pixels in process of time. When there is a big difference between background image and input image, we decide it is the point of the time of the object input and then extract boundary point of it. The extracted boundary point detects precise movement of the object by creating minimum block of it and searching block that maintaining distance. The designed and embodied system shows more than 95% accuracy in the performance test.

  • Extraction and tracking objects are fundamental and important steps of the digital image processing and computer vision. Many algorithms about extracting and tracking objects have been developed. In this research, a method is suggested for tracking a moving object using a pair of CCD cameras and calculating the coordinate of the moving object. A 1/100 miniature of soccer field was made to apply the developed algorithms. After candidates were selected from the acquired images using the RGB value of a moving object (soccer ball), the object was extracted using its size (MBR size) among the candidates. And then, image coordinates of a moving object are obtained. The real-time position of a moving object is tracked in the boundary of the expected motion, which is determined by centering the moving object. The 3D position of a moving object can be obtained by conducting the relative orientation, absolute orientation, and space intersection of a pair of the CCD camera image.

  • Most algorithms in computer vision and digital photogrammetry assume that digital stereo pairs are registered in epipolar geometry. But, an aerial stereo pair is not likely to be in epiplar geometry since the attitude of the camera at the instant of exposure is different at every exposure station. In this paper, stereo digital imagery is obtained from aerial stereo pair by scanner. Then procesure to resample the digital imagery to epipolar geometry using exterior orientation elements after absolute orientation is described. As a result, a stereo imagery in epipolar geometry is produced from stereo digital imagery. Epipolar imagery in this paper is applied to the image matching method by digital image correlation technique. Then, a digital elevation model is produced from the result of image matching. The digital elevation model in this paper is compared to the other digital elevation model produced by analytical plotter. As a result, an economical method to generate digital elevation model is presented.

  • Video image processing systems(VIPS) offer numerous benefits to transportation models and applications, due to their ability to monitor traffic in real time. VIPS based on wide-area detection, i.e., multi-lane surveillance algorithm provide traffic parameters with single camera such as flow and velocity, as well as occupancy and density. However, most current commercial VIPS utilize a tripwire detection algorithm that examines image intensity changes in the detection regions to indicate vehicle presence and passage, i.e., they do not identify individual vehicles as unique targets. If VIPS are developed to track individual vehicles and thus trace vehicle trajectories, many existing transportation models will benefit from more detailed information of individual vehicles. Furthermore, additional information obtained from the vehicle trajectories will improve incident detection by identifying lane change maneuvers and acceleration/deceleration patterns. The objective of this research was to relate traffic safety to VIPS tracking and this paper has developed a computer vision system of monitoring individual vehicle trajectories based on image processing, and offer the detailed information, for example, volumes, speed, and occupancy rate as well as traffic information via tripwire image detectors. Also the developed system has been verified by comparing with commercial VIP detectors.

  • A photoluminescence (PL) imaging method using a vision camera was employed to inspect InGaN/GaN quantum-well light-emitting diode (LED) epi-wafers. The PL image revealed dark spot defective regions (DSDRs) as well as a spatial map of integrated PL intensity of the epi-wafer. The Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) nonradiative recombination coefficient increased with the size of the DSDRs. The high nonradiative recombination rates of the DSDRs resulted in degradation of the optical properties of the LED chips fabricated at the defective regions. Abnormal current-voltage characteristics with large forward leakages were also observed for LED chips with DSDRs, which could be due to parallel resistances bypassing the junction and/or tunneling through defects in the active region. It was found that the SRH nonradiative recombination process was dominant in the voltage range where the forward leakage by tunneling was observed. The results indicated that the DSDRs observed by PL imaging of LED epi-wafers were high density SRH nonradiative recombination centers which could affect the optical and electrical properties of the LED chips, and PL imaging can be an inspection method for evaluation of the epi-wafers and estimation of properties of the LED chips before fabrication.

  • This paper deals with a system that is capable of recognizing hand-signals in 3-dimensional space. The system uses 2 color cameras as input devices. Vision-based gesture recognition system is known to be user-friendly because of its contact-free characteristic. But as with other applications using a camera as an input device, there are difficulties under complex background and varying illumination. In order to detect hand region robustly from a input image under various conditions without any special gloves or markers, the paper uses previous position information and adaptive hand color model. The paper defines a hand-signal as a combination of two basic elements such as 'hand pose' and 'hand trajectory'. As an extensive classification method for hand pose, the paper proposes 2-stage classification method by using 'small group concept'. Also, the paper suggests a complementary feature selection method from images from two color cameras. We verified our method with a hand-signal application to our driving simulator.
