Generating a Stereoscopic Image from a Monoscopic Camera (단안 카메라를 이용한 입체영상 생성)

  • In this paper, we propose a method of producing a stereoscopic image from multiple images captured from a monoscopic camera. By translating a camera in the horizontal direction, left and right images are chosen among N captured images. For this, image edges are extracted and a rotational angle is estimated from edge orientation. Also, a translational vector is also estimated from the correlation of projected image data. Then, two optimal images are chosen and subsequently compensated using the rotational angle as well as the translational vector in order to make a satisfactory stereoscopic image. The proposed method was performed on thirty-two test image set. The subjective visual fatigue test was carried out to validate the 3D quality of stereoscopic images. In terms of visual fatigue, the 3D satisfaction ratio reached approximately 84%.

Analytic simulator and image generator of multiple-scattering Compton camera for prompt gamma ray imaging

  • For prompt gamma ray imaging for biomedical applications and environmental radiation monitoring, we propose herein a multiple-scattering Compton camera (MSCC). MSCC consists of three or more semiconductor layers with good energy resolution, and has potential for simultaneous detection and differentiation of multiple radio-isotopes based on the measured energies, as well as three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the radio-isotope distribution. In this study, we developed an analytic simulator and a 3D image generator for a MSCC, including the physical models of the radiation source emission and detection processes that can be utilized for geometry and performance prediction prior to the construction of a real system. The analytic simulator for a MSCC records coincidence detections of successive interactions in multiple detector layers. In the successive interaction processes, the emission direction of the incident gamma ray, the scattering angle, and the changed traveling path after the Compton scattering interaction in each detector, were determined by a conical surface uniform random number generator (RNG), and by a Klein-Nishina RNG. The 3D image generator has two functions: the recovery of the initial source energy spectrum and the 3D spatial distribution of the source. We evaluated the analytic simulator and image generator with two different energetic point radiation sources (Cs-137 and Co-60) and with an MSCC comprising three detector layers. The recovered initial energies of the incident radiations were well differentiated from the generated MSCC events. Correspondingly, we could obtain a multi-tracer image that combined the two differentiated images. The developed analytic simulator in this study emulated the randomness of the detection process of a multiple-scattering Compton camera, including the inherent degradation factors of the detectors, such as the limited spatial and energy resolutions. The Doppler-broadening effect owing to the momentum distribution of electrons in Compton scattering was not considered in the detection process because most interested isotopes for biomedical and environmental applications have high energies that are less sensitive to Doppler broadening. The analytic simulator and image generator for MSCC can be utilized to determine the optimal geometrical parameters, such as the distances between detectors and detector size, thus affecting the imaging performance of the Compton camera prior to the development of a real system.

  • Vibration measurement using image processing is a fully non-contact measurement method and has many application fields. The resolution of vibration data measured by image processing depends on the camera performance and is lower than that measured by accelerometers. This work discusses the method to increase resolution of vibration signal measured by image processing based on the image mosaic technique with a high-power lens. The working principle of resolution enhancement was explained theoretically and verified by several experiments. It was shown that the proposed method can measure vibrations of relatively large scale structures with increased resolutions.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for improving defect-detection performance based on reconstruction of line-scan camera images using both the projection profiles and color space transform. The proposed method consists of RGB region segmentation, representative value reconstruction using the tracing system, and Y image reconstruction using color-space transformation. Through experiments it is demonstrated that the performance using the reconstructed image is better than that using aerial image for LCD surface inspection.

  • In this paper, an Internet-based monitoring system is studied which analyzes visual image of drifted snow and measures the amount of snowing. The system is composed with reference ruler where LED's are attached, a camera, and PC with a controller. The length of the ruler is 1.5m and the interval of the LED's is 1cm. The controller synchronizes the on-off control of each LED with the image frame of the camera. When the snow is accumulated along the ruler, the corresponding LED is blocked and the lowest position of the lighted LED is estimated with this captured image of the camera. Because of week intensity of LED light and light rays of outdoors, it is hard to discriminate which LED is blocked due to snow.   • A core technology for implementation of Augmented Reality is to develop a merging algorithm between interesting 3-D objects and real images. In this paper, we present a 3-D object recognition method to decide viewing direction toward the object from camera. This process is the starting point to merge with real image and 3-D objects.   • In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the difference in image characteristics when multiple camera images are captured for virtual space production. Sixty-four images were used by cross-mounting eight bodies and lenses, respectively. Image analysis compares and analyzes the standard deviation of the histogram and pixel distribution values. As a result of the analysis, it shows different image characteristics depending on the lens or image sensor, though it is a camera of the same model. In this paper, we have adjusted the distribution of the overall brightness value of the image to compensate for this difference. As a result, the average deviation was the maximum of (Indoor: 6.89, outdoor: 24.23), we obtained images with almost no deviation (Indoor: maximum 0.42, outdoor: maximum: 2.73). In the future, we will study and apply more accurate image analysis methods than image brightness distribution.

  • In this paper, we propose the semi-auto camera calibration method including user input. The proposed method estimates the vanishing points using user defined reference lines and defines the constraint for reducing outlier in vanishing points estimation process. The proposed camera calibration method based on both algebraic and geometric method improves a calibration performance for difficult condition, which represents that existing method can't calibrate a image. Experimental results show that the proposed method calibration accuracy higher than existing method.

  • Assessing health condition of crop in the field is one of core operation in precision fanning. A sensing system was proposed to remotely detect the crop health condition in terms of SP AD readings directly related to chlorophyll contents of crop using a multispectral camera equipped on ground-based platform. Since the image taken by a camera was sensitive to changes in ambient light intensity, it was needed to convert gray scale image data into reflectance, an index to indicate the reflection characteristics of target crop. A reference reflectance panel consisting of four pieces of sub-panels with different reflectance was developed for a dynamic calibration, by which a calibration equation was updated for every crop image captured by the camera. The system performance was evaluated in a field by investigating the relationship between com canopy reflectance and SP AD values. The validation tests revealed that the com canopy reflectance induced from Green band in the multispectral camera had the most significant correlation with SPAD values $(r^2=0.75)$ and NIR band could be used to filter out unwanted non-crop features such as soil background and empty space in a crop canopy. This research confirmed that it was technically feasible to develop a ground-based remote sensing system for assessing crop health condition.

  • Image blurring in airborne camera can be prevented through timely actuation of LOS(Line of Sight) into the opposite direction to the aircraft advancement, i.e. FMC(Forward motion compensation). Performance verification of FMC requires installation of camera to the aircraft. However, in many ways the verification process has little choice but to be implemented in the laboratory. In this paper verification method of FMC performance in the laboratory is introduced. With collimator target installed in the known reference position image obtained by actual mission plan naturally displays image blurring as well as LOS displacement by FMC effect. Through comparison of the amount of those image blurring and LOS displacement to the equivalent image distortion expected by the application of the FMC reference command can the performance be verified. In this paper we propose a new verification method of FMC performance in laboratory along with generalized solution of FMC reference command, and assess the validity of our proposition.
