  • Two hundred and forty female day-old broiler chicks were employed in this study to investigate the influence of grains containing different levels of dietary fiber on the growth rate, carcass fat content and abdominal fat pad weight. Corn and sorghum were used as low-fiber grains, and rye and hulled barley as high-fiber grains. During the 6 weeks of feeding period, chicks were fed one of the four diets which were iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous. Birds were Tandomly allotted to 20 battery cages. There were five replicates per treatment and 12 chicks per replicate (pen). Data were subjected to the one-way ANOVA test, and when significant at 5% level, then means were compared by the method of Duncan (1955). At 3 weeks of age, rye-fed chicks grew significantly slower than did the other birds. At 6 weeks of age, the growth rates of chicks fed rye and sorghum were significantly lower than those of birds fed barley ana corn. Carcasses from birds fed rye showed significantly lower tat content than those from birds fed corn and sorghum at 3 weeks of age. No significant difference was found between rye and barley in this context. At 6 weeks of age. however, this difference in carcass fat content disappeared. No significant difference in abdominal fat pad weight was found among four grains at both 3 and 6 weeks of ages.

  • In this study, we found the optimal manufacturing conditions of livestock manure sludge RDF with the oil-drying method. We performed oil evaporation, oil drying and pelletizing of the sludge to evaluate the value of the product (sludge RDF), and measured the performance of the product using calorimeter and PXRF equipment. Also, we conducted the calorie comparison test between sludge RDF manufactured in this study and wood RDF generally used in the field. Experimental results showed that 30g of the sludge treated by vegetable oil at $130^{\circ}C$ for 25 minutes were the optimal conditions to make the sludge RDF (considering the aspects of eco-friendly and mass production). The caloric value of the sludge RDF manufactured in this study was 5211kcal/kg which is higher than that of wood RDF used widely in the market. Finally, PXRF results showed sludge RDF contains no heavy metals with the exception of sulfur. Therefore, we recommend more study about the sulfur control process for future development of the industrial manufacturing process.

  • The "Guidance Document for Bioequivalence Study" was revised for adding to bioequivalence studies of controlled-release products after meal(Korea Food & Drug Administration Notification #2008-22, 2008.5.7). The bioequivalence study design for controlled-release products is $2{\times}2$ crossover under fast and fed condition in respect. For studies of controlled-release products under fed study, the same high-fat diet should be taken within 20 minutes in at least a 10-hour fasting state. The drug products should be administered 30 minutes after the meal started. A high-fat(more than 35 percent of total caloric content of the meal) and high-calorie(over 900 calories) meal is recommended as a test meal for fed BE studies.

  • A retrospective cohort study of low- income households was carried out on 679 mother-infant pairs to see the effect of weaning practices on growth between March, 1987 and January, 1988 in one rural area, one small city, and one big city, by measuring weight and height of children and intervewing mothers. The sample children showed a linear growth retardation from around 7 or 8 month based on WAZ and HAZ using the Korea Growth Standard. After adjusting both for birth-weight/length and morbidity effect, the ANCOVA test showed that :1) infants who were given supplements were not greater than those of not given. 2) infants who were eating supplements more frequently did not show a larger WAZ or HAZ than those of not eating or sometimes eating them. 3) The caloric intake rates of those of higher food frequencies were not greater than those of lower food frequencies. The context of nutrition education about weaning practices has to be changed stressing not only the early introduction of supplements but also the adequate amount of food intake to secure the rapid growth at this critical age.

  • In the international natural gas market, natural gas has markedly low calories. The domestic calories standard of natural gas was changed and the performance and efficiency of many industrial machines using natural gas were affected because of low caloric natural gas. Therefore, in this study, a dual fuel engine fueled with natural gas and diesel was tested to examine the effects of the CNG substitution rate on the combustion characteristics, such as thermal efficiency, COVimep and heat release rate. The CNG substitution rate was defined as the ratio of CNG instead of diesel, which was calculated as the total energy. The conditions of the tested engine were fixed $1800rpm/500N{\cdot}m$. In addition, diesel fuel was injected at $16^{\circ}CA$ BTDC and the fuel pressure was fixed at 85 MPa; the lower heating value of CNG was $10,400kcal/Nm^3$. The results of the engine test showed that the amount of diesel fuel was changed according to the CNG substitution rate. Therefore, when the substitution rate was increased, the amount of diesel fuel was decreased, which affected the energy for ignition. In addition, the ignition delay duration was increased, which affected the thermal efficiency and torque. On the other hand, the COVimep was less than 5% and a stable combustion state of the engine was shown.

  • A feeding experiment for 160 days was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary soybean meal (SBM) on the apparent digestibility, ammonia excretion and body composition of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Seven diets containing $0\~70\%$ SBM were formulated based on iso-nitrogenous and iso-caloric basis of $44\%$ crude protein and approximately 4,200 Kcal/kg of gross energy. To evaluate the nutritional utilization of the SBM diets at the end of 60 and 120-day rearing with test diets, digestion rates of protein and lipid of SBM diets were measured. Fish fed the diets containing above $46\%$ SBM showed higher apparent digestibility for protein, but lower for lipid than did fish fed the control diet in both trials. Protein and fat contents in the carcass were similar for all experimental fish, except for fish fed $58\%$ and $70\%$ SBM which showed lower fat content than the others, but composition of fatty acid and amino acids were not affected by dietary SBM levels. Gill and urinary post-prandial ammonia ($NH_3-N$) excretions were measured at 12 and 24 hours after single feeding of the experimental diets. Excretions of $NH_3-N$ measured after 24 hours were almost 1 times higher than those measured after 12 hours. Total excretion fer the 24 hours by fish fed $70\%$ SBM was $15\%$ higher than that of fish fed the control diet. Results of present study may suggest that the rainbow trout which were fed above $34%\;or\;46\%$ of SBM diet showed a decrease gradually in lipid bioavailability compared to the control group.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of hypoglycemic yogurt as a clinical test with person both who have diabetes and who don't have diabetes. Diabetes is a disease caused by unused and accumulated glucoses produced via the foods digestion due to the lack of insulin or lower tissue reaction to insulin. Patients with diabetes or complications of diabetes are on the rise annually. For the therapy and prevention of diabetes, a yogurt made from functional materials such as insulin-resistant FK-23 lactic acid bacteria, Pinitol, edible fiber which delays glucose-absorption, extract powder of glucose-absorption-inhibitory white bean and low-caloric Erythritol and banaba extract is effective for reduce or restrain the blood glucose levels. The blood glucose levels after a meal of non-diabetic persons were lower after drinking a hypoglycemic yogurt than they after drinking general yogurt. The blood glucose levels after a meal of 10 diabetic patients were checked after drinking the yoghurt. As a result, 19 mg/dL, 30 mg/dL, 31 mg/dL of blood glucose levels decreased in 30 min, 60 min and 120 min respectively after drinking the yogurt. Blood glucose inhibition rates of 80 % of the tested patients also decreased. The blood glucose level of the diabetic patients having drunk the yogurt for 30 days consistently decreased into 59 mg/dL in 120 min after a meal.

  • The study was performed to investigate the effects of whey protein-rich meal substitute added with vitamins, minerals, and lactobacillus powder probiotics on weight loss, body fat, and body composition in 24 female volunteers for 4 weeks. Whey protein-rich meal substitute was consumed with low-fat, high calcium milk (1% fat, 260 mg/200 mL) twice a day. Subjects submitted 3-day diet records and a life-style questionnaire before the study. During the study, subjects were required to turn in a diet record every day and consume the meal substitute formula in the metabolic ward at C university for 4 weeks. Anthropometric measurements were carried out weekly by Inbody 7.0. The dietary intake and anthropometric data were analyzed to compare changes before and after the study by paired t-test with SPSS version 23.0. The subjects were mostly early 20's and either overweight or obese and highly motivated to lose weight. Most of the subjects consumed three meals per day regularly and spent mostly 10~15 minutes for a meal. Their caloric intake was relatively low and decreased from 1,360 kcal at week 0 to 1,100 kcal after 4 weeks. However, total protein intake increased while carbohydrate and fat intakes decreased (p<0.05) after the trial. Nine vitamin intakes after the study improved compared to those before the study (p<0.05). After the study, subjects showed lower body weight (-1.8 kg), body fat (-0.94 kg), percent body fat (-0.86%), as well as waist circumference (-4.52 cm), hip circumference (-0.44 cm), waist hip ratio (-0.05), and triceps skinfold thickness (-2.39 mm) compared to those at week 0 (p<0.05). Muscle mass tended to be less compared to week 0, although there was no significant differences between weeks 0 and 4. In conclusion, diet trial with whey protein-rich meal substitute induced weight loss and positively changed body fat parameters and body composition.

  • This study was done to investigate the effect of adolescent smoking on dietary intakes and nutritional status of serum lipids and antioxidant vitamins. Subjects were 82 somkers whose average pack-year was 0.73, and 85 nonsmokers of male technical high school students in Seoul. Anthropometric measurement was performed and % body fat was also analyzed by Bioelectrical Impedance Fatness Analyzer(GIF-891). Dietary intakes and habits were examined through questionnaires and nutrient intakes were analyzed by Computer Aided Nutritional (CAN) analysis programs. Serum TG and total cholesterol levels were measured by Spotchem sp-4410 and serum HDL-cholesterol levels were measured by test kit. serum vitamin C level was measured by 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine method and serum levels of vitamin A and vitamin E were measured by HPLC. All data were statistically analyzed by SAS PC package program. There was a significant difference in body fat percentage and systolic blood pressure while other anthropometric measurements were not different between smokers and monsmokers. Caloric intakes(2335㎉) in adolescent smokers tended to be higher than that of nonsmokers (2,175㎉) but the difference was not statistically significant. Intakes of protein(76.67g) and niacin(16.49㎎) in adolescent male smokers were significantly higher(P<0.05) than those of nonsmokers although other nutrient intakes were not significantly different. Analysis of serum lipids showed that serum HDL-cholesterol level of smokers was significantly different. Analysis of serum lipids showed that serum HDL-cholesterol level of smokers was significantly lower(p<0.05) than that of nonsmokers, whereas other lipid levels were not significantly different. Serum vitamin C level was also significantly lower(p<0.05) in adolescent smokers than in nonsmokers. In addition, serum vitamin E level, which was 7.85㎎/1 in smokers, was lower than that of 9.20㎎/1 in nonsmokers(p<0.05) while serum vitamin A level was not significantly different between the two groups. These results indicate that cigarette smoking in adolescence decreases serum levels of HDL-cholesterol, vitamin C and vitamin E even thoughth their smoking history is very short. • Purpose: To identify and evaluate the risk of chemical fire causative substances by using thermal analysis methods (DSC, TGA) for the hazards and physical property changes that occur when newly used biofuels are mixed with existing fuels It is to use it for identification and evaluation of the cause of fire by securing data related to the method and the hazards of the material according to it. Method: The research method used in this experiment is the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC: Difference in heat flux) through quantitative information on the caloric change from the location, shape, number, and area of peaks. flux) was measured, and the weight change caused by decomposition heat at a specific temperature was continuously measured by performing thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA: Thermo- gravimetric Analyzer). Result: First, in the heat flux graph, the boiling point of the material and the intrinsic characteristic value of the material or the energy required for decomposition can be checked. Second, as the content of biodiesel increased, many peaks were identified. Third, it was confirmed through analysis that substances with low expected boiling points were contained. Conclusion: It was shown that the physical risk of the material can be evaluated by using the risk of biodiesel, which is currently used as a new energy source, through various physical and chemical analysis techniques (DSC + TGA).In addition, it is expected that the comparison of differences between test methods and the accumulation and utilization of know-how on experiments in this study will be helpful in future studies on physical properties of hazardous materials and risk assessment of materials.
