The modal analyses on the phenocryst phases and the normative mineralogies from the bulk chemical analyses record that the volcanic rocks related to the Yangsan caldera might been derived from compositionally zoned magma. The volcanic rocks show linearly continuous mineralogical gradients, not only totally in the relations between $SiO_2$ and proportion of phenocryst content, but also within each rock unit in the relations between total phenocryst content and the proportion, Q-Ab-Or and Q-An(Ab-Or) diagrams. The roughly gradational modal variations of the phenocryst phases are shown upward within each rock unit. However, the contents and proportion of the phenocrysts in the Yangsan Tuff and the Hwajeri Formation represent the zigzaggedly undulatory variations. The continuous mineralogical gradients without large gaps define a large zoned magma system in the pre-eruptive, later precollapse and postcollapse magma chambers respectively. The zigzagged variations reflect the intermittent eruptive pulses representing any time gaps.
We assumed the situation where an eruption column had been formed by the explosive Plinian eruption from Mt. Baekdu and that the collapse of eruption column had caused pyroclastic density currents to occur. Based on this assumption, we simulated by using a Titan2D model. To find out about the range of the impacts of pyroclastic density currents by volcanic eruption scenarios, we studied the distance for the range of the impacts by VEIs. To compare the results by each volcanic eruption scenario, we set the location of the vent on the 8-direction flank of the outer rim and on the center of the caldera, the internal friction angle of the pyroclastic density currents as $35^{\circ}$, the bed friction angle as $16^{\circ}$. We set the pile height of column collapse and the vent diameter with various VEIs. We properly assumed the height of the column collapse, the diameter of the vent, the initial rates of the column collapse and the simulation period, based on the VEIs, gravity and the volume of the collapsed volcanic ash. According to the comparative analysis of the simulation results based on the increase of the eruption, the higher VEI by the increase of eruption products, the farther the pyroclastic density currents disperse. To the northwest from the vent on the northeast slope of the outer rim of the caldera, the impact range was 3.3 km, 4.6 km, 13.2 km, 24.0 km, 50.2 km, 83.4 km or more from VEI=2 to VEI=7, respectively. Once the database has been fully constructed, it can be used as a very important material in terms of disaster prevention and emergency management, which aim to minimize human and material damages in the vicinity of Mt. Baekdu when its eruption causes the pyroclastic density currents to occur.
The spectral information based image analysis, visual interpretation and automatic classification have been widely carried out so far for remote sensing data processing. Yet recently, many researchers have tried to extract the spatial information which cannot be expressed directly in the image itself. Using the texture and wavelet scheme, we made a wavelet-based texture fusion image which includes the advantages of each scheme. Moreover, using these schemes, we carried out image classification for the urban spatial analysis and the geological structure analysis around the caldera area. These two case studies showed that image classification accuracy of texture image and wavelet-based texture fusion image is better than that of using only raw image. In case of the urban area using high resolution image, as both texture and wavelet based texture fusion image are added to the original image, the classification accuracy is the highest. Because detailed spatial information is applied to the urban area where detail pixel variation is very significant. In case of the geological structure analysis using middle and low resolution image, the images added by only texture image showed the highest classification accuracy. It is interpreted to be necessary to simplify the information such as elevation variation, thermal distribution, on the occasion of analyzing the relatively larger geological structure like a caldera. Therefore, in the image analysis using spatial information, each spatial information analysis method should be carefully selected by considering the characteristics of the satellite images and the purpose of study.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the existence of faults and intrusive rocks in the volcanic rock mass of Ulleung-do using magnetic anomalies. The magnetic survey data show that basaltic (mafic) rocks have high magnetic anomalies and that trachytic (felsic) rocks have low magnetic anomalies, implying that the anomaly distributions can be used to distinguish between different volcanic rock types that may be covered by regolith (such as alluvial and colluvial deposits) and other sedimentary layers. Our results show that basaltic rocks are not present within the Nari caldera. However, outside the caldera, the occurrence of high magnetic anomaly values of >$1,000{\gamma}$ is presumed to reflect the existence of basaltic craters or volcanic vents that formed prior to the eruption of the trachytic rocks. In particular, the area with anomaly values of >$1,000{\gamma}$ in the vicinity of Namyang-ri, southwest of Ulleung-do, is interpreted as having a high probability of hosting a crater and vent originating from mafic volcanism.
The caldera lake "Chun-ji" is located at the summit of Baekdu volcano, which is in the border of China and North Korea. Chun-ji Lake has altitude 2,189 m above sea level. The Chun-ji is freezing in the winter when the water temperature goes down to zero for a year, and it melts in the season when the water temperature goes up again. However, since it is located at a high altitude, there are many cloudy days, and it is difficult to observe with optical images. For this reason, radar images, which are less influenced by weather than optical images, are more effective for observing the ice of heaven and earth. In this study, 75 TerraSAR-X images from chun-ji area were used for analysis from 2015 to 2017, and the calculated ice area and temperature changes were analyzed. As a result, the ice of the caldera lake formed was formed in early December and slowly melted until mid-April. During this period, temperatures in the Samjiyeon area were about $-10^{\circ}C$ when ice was produced, and the temperature was about $0^{\circ}C$ in mid-April when it was thawing. Correlation coefficients between ice surface area and temperature in winter 2015 and 2016, where global ice is produced, show a high correlation of -0.82 and -0.75. In addition to the results of this study, it can be used as an indicator to monitor the volcanic activity by comparing the result of the recent volcanic activity with the result of the increase in water temperature using various imagery.
This study is performed to find out the eruptive events of the historical period recorded in literature, which have been recognized and regarded as ones from Mt. Baekdusan, and to make volcanological interpretations of the eruptive events. Since the Millennium eruption, more than 31 eruptive events have been discovered, most of which are Plinian eruptions with volcanic ash that dispersed into the regions in the vicinity of the volcano. The 1903 record includes the event of the phreatomagmatic or vulcanian eruption that occurred within the Cheonji caldera lake. Based on the eruption records of the historical period and the 2002 precursor unrest to volcanic eruptions, Mt. Baekdusan has been evaluated and regarded as an active volcano that has the potential to erupt in the future.

A welded tuff with a near-vertical parataxitic fabric crops out as an elliptical shape($500{\times}350m$) in horizontal section, the Geumseongsan volcanic field. It intrudes the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of the upper Hayang Group, surge tuff and rhyolite of the Geumseongsan volcanic complex. Generally it displays an ubiquitous, steeply inward-dipping welding foliation, subparallel to the margins of the intrusion, and a subvertically inward-inclined lineation defined by extremely stretched fiammes on the welding foliation plane. These fabrics suggest its overall form may be of an inverted cone-shaped plug representing a flared vent that served as a feeder for extrusive welded ash-flow tuff sheets.
Euiseong sub-basin, one of three sub-basins in Kyungsang basin, consists of various sedimentary and igneous rocks of Cretaceous age. Kusandong tuff and Yucheon volcanic rocks from the sub-basin were collected for the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) study. Maximum directions of the AMS for Kusandong tuff and Yucheon volcanic rocks are used to detect possible source areas. Although the dispersion of the maximum directions of the AMS, mainly due to low susceptibility and/or low percent anisotropy of individual specimens, is rather large, it is possible to reveal several source areas for the volcanic rocks. Areas near the Keumseongsan and Hwasan, calderas in the study area, are identified as source areas for Yucheon volcanic rocks, while the western part of Sunamsan, another collapsed caldera in Euiseong sub-basin, is inferred to be the source area for Kusandong tuff. However, it is not possible to determine detailed source areas for groups of Yucheon volcanic rocks of different lithologies, because of poor degree of convergence of the maximum directions of the AMS results from the volcanic rocks. It is also concluded that several episodic volcanic activities centered at Keumseongsan and Hwasan calderas were responsible for the formation of Yucheon volcanic rocks in Euseong area.

The volcanic edifice of Ulleungdo is largely divided into a shield volcano underwater and a tholoide above seawater. The geological features of the volcano above seawater are basically alkali volcanic rocks that are further divided into five geological strata: agglomerates and tuffs trachyte and phonolite trachytic pumice trachyandesite, and sedimentary layer. The topography of Ulleungdo consists of volcanic landform on the whole, and such volcanic landform is weathered and eroded into various weathering landform, stream landform, coastal landform, structural landform, etc. Major volcanic topography includes caldera basin, central cone, and columnar joint, whereas weathering topography features, tafoni, gnamma, tor, weathered cave, talus, etc. In major coastal topography are sea cliff, wave-cut platform, sea stack, sea arch, sea cave, shingle beach, coastal terrace, etc. For stream topography, its development is minimal except for waterfalls.
The source of Chusan Spring water in the Ulleungdo is the precipitation in the Nari caldera basin, which permeates in the Trachitic pumice and tuff area and moves downward, outflowing at the lithologic boundary between the trachyte and Nari tuff. It is known that the discharge rate of the Chusan Spring is large enough to be used for the small hydroelectric power generation, but the exact discharge rate and hydrogeologic characteristics have not been known. The discharge rates of the Spring were measured 11 times, which ranged from $15,220m^3/d$ to $36,278m^3/d$. The discharge rates, measured by the automatic level recorder, for two-year period, were $20,000{\sim}38,000m^3/d$. The variation of discharge rates did not coincide with rainfall event, but showed daily increases of $3,000{\sim}5,000m^3/d$. The annual discharge rate excluding the evapotranspiration and the surrounding stream discharge corresponded to 70.6% of the annual precipitation of the recharge area. Therefore, meteorological observations at the Nari basin, rather than the Ulleung-do meteorological station, are more appropriate to properly interpret the discharge characteristics of the Chusam Spring and the recharge rate of the basin.
