Fixation of lead contaminants in the solidification/stabilization using Portland cement has been investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and compressive strength. The presence of lead was observed to produce lead carbonate sulfate hydroxide ($Pb_4SO_4(CO_3)_2(OH)_2$), lead carbonate hydroxide hydrate ($3PbCO_3{\cdot}2Pb(OH)_2{\cdot}H_2O$) and two other unidentified lead salts in cavity areas and was observed to significantly retard the hydration of cement. By 28 days, howevere, the XRD peaks of most of the lead precipitates have essentially disappeared with only residual traces of lead carbonate sulfate hydroxide and lead carbonate hydroxide hydrate evident. After 28 days of curing, hydration appears well advanced with a strong portlandite peak present though C-S-H gel peaks are not particularly evident. Lead species produced with the dissolution of lead precipitates are fixed into the cement matrix to be calcium lead silicate hydrate (C-Pb-S-H) during cement-based solidification.

In order to increase the integrity of the wellbore which is used to prevent the leakage of supercritical $CO_2$, it is necessary to develop a concrete that is strongly resistant to carbonation. In an environment where the concentration of $CO_2$ is exceptionally high, $Ca^{2+}$ ion concentration in pore solution of Portland cement concrete will drop significantly due to the rapid consumption of calcium hydroxide, which decreases the stability of the calcium silicate hydrate. In this research, calcium phosphates were used to modify Portland cement system in order to produce hydroxyapatite, a hydration product that is strongly resistant to carbonation under such an environment. According to the experimental results, calcium phosphates reacted with Portland cement to form hydroxyapatite. The formation of hydroxyapatite was verified using X-ray diffraction analyses with selective extraction techniques. When using dicalcium phosphate dihydrate and tricalcium phosphate, the 28-day compressive strength was lower than that of plain cement paste. However, the specimen with monocalcium phosphate monohydrate showed equivalent strength to that of plain cement paste.
We tested the limestone sludge produced in Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. as a filler powder for the effective use of portland cement. Hydration process was investigated by measuring the hydration rate, the amounts of non-evaporable water and compressive strength of cement-limestone sludge paste prepared by mixing limes-tone sludge with cement. The results obtained in this study can be summarized as follows: 1. There is no significant difference between the cases of adding up to 10% limestone sludge and those of unmixed cement system. However the reaction rate increases in the 5% limestone sludge system(due to the effects of fine). 2. The compressive strength increases proportionally with increasing the measured amount of non-evaporable water, Adding 5% limestone sludge also increases the strength a little higher, and the compressive strength and calcium silicate hydrates. In the case of the mixed limestone sludge, $2\theta$=$11.7^{\circ}$ peak appears in the samples of 28 days hydration. This peak indicted the presence of calcium carboaluminate hydrate. Although limestone sludge is generally regarded as a inert materials, some kinds of cement can produce a calcium carboaluminate by reacting with aluminate in cement pastes.

Hyperalkaline groundwater formed by groundwater-cement components and its reaction with bedrock in a nuclear waste repository were simulated by geochemical modeling. The result of groundwater-cement components reaction showed that the pH of water was 13.3 and the precipitated minerals were Brucite, Katoite, Calcium Silicate Hydrate(CSH1.1), Ettringite, Hematite, and Portlandite. The result of interaction between such minerals and groundwater sampled in Gyeongju area also showed that the pH of groundwater reached 12.4. Interaction between such hyperalkaline groundwater and granite was simulated by kinetic model during $10^3$ years. This result showed that the final pH of groundwater reached 11.2 and the variation of pH was controlled by dissolution/precipitation of silicate and CSH minerals. Groundwater quality was also determined by dissolution/precipitation of silicate, CSH, oxide minerals. Our results show that geochemical modeling of long-term hyperalkaline groundwater and rock interaction can contribute to the safety assessment of engineered barrier by predicting geochemical condition in repository site.

In this research, the geopolymer was fabricated using municipal solid waste incineration ash (denoted as MSWIA) slag and alkali activator, NaOH and its properties were analyzed. Particularly, the effects of NaOH molarity, particle size of MSWIA, and liquid/solids ratio on the compressive strength of geopolymers were investigated. The compressive strength of geopolymers fabricated increased with finer grain size of MSWIA, and optimum value of the liquid/solids ratio was identified as 0.13. As the molarity of the NaOH increased, the compressive strength of geopolymers was increased. Even more the 20 M of NaOH, but the strength was not increased. The calcium aluminum silicate and calcium aluminum silicate hydrate zeolites were generated in the geopolymer fabricated with more than 20 M of NaOH, with some unreacted silica and unknown crystals remained. The highest compressive strength, 163 MPa, of geopolymer was appeared at conditions of curing temperature $70^{\circ}C$, and 20 M of NaOH, indicating that the high concentration of NaOH accelerates the geopolymer reaction and dense microstructure. The high-strength geopolymer fabricated in the present study is expected to contribute significantly to develop the field of cement alternative substances and to improve the recycling rate of MSWIA slag.
To improve the utilization rate of construction waste as mine backfilling materials, this paper investigated the feasibility of using recycled powder as mine paste backfilling cementitious material, and studied the pozzolanic activity of recycled construction waste powder. In this study, alkali-calcium-sulfur served as the activation principle and an orthogonal test plan was performed to analyze the impact of the early strength agent, quick lime, and gypsum on the pozzolanic activity of the recycled powder. Our results indicated that in descending order, early strength agent > quick lime > gypsum affected the strength of the backfilling paste with recycled powder as a cementitious material during early phases. The strength during late phases was affected by, in descending order, quick lime > gypsum > early strength agent. Using setting time and early compressive strength as an analysis index as well as an extreme difference analysis, it was found that the optimal ratio of recycled powder cementitious material for mine paste backfilling was recycled powder:quick lime:gypsum:early strength agent at 78%:10%:8%:4%. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscope were used to show that the hydration products of recycled powder cementitious material at the initial stages were mainly CH and ettringite. As hydration time increased, more and more recycled powder was activated. It mainly became calcium silicate hydrate, calcium aluminate hydrate, etc. In summary, recycled powder exhibited potential pozzolanic activities. When activated, it could replace cementitious materials to be used in mine backfill.

The use of pozzolanic materials in concrete mixtures can enhance the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. By reactions with pozzolanic materials and calcium hydroxide in cement matrix, calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) increases and calcium hydroxide decreases in cement matrix of concrete. Consequently, the volume of solid materials increases. The pozzolanic particles also fill spaces between clinker grains, thereby resulting in a denser cement matrix and interfacial transition zone between cement matrix and aggregates; this lowers the permeability and increases the compressive strength of concrete. Moreover, the total contents of alkali in concrete are reduced by replacing cements with pozzolanic materials; this prevents cracks due to alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR). In this study, nanosilica is incorporated in cement pastes. The differences of microstructural compositions between the hydrated cements with and without nanosilica are examined using nanoindentation, XRDA and $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR. The results can be used for a basic research to enhance durability of concrete slab tracks and concrete railway sleepers.
An electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) investigation can provide quantitative and qualitative insight into the nature of the surface and bulk chemistry on solidified waste forms(SWF). The proportion of Pb in grain areas is below 0.3 wt. %, and the proportion near the border of the grain slightly increases to 0.98 wt. % but in the inter-particle areas farther from the grain, the concentration of Pb markedly increases. It is apparent that very little Pb diffuses into the tricalcium silicate($C_3S$) particles and most of the Pb exists as precipitates of sulfate, hydroxide, and carbonate in the cavity areas between $C_3S$ grains. Calcite additions on Pb-doped SWF are also observed to induce deeper incorporation of lead into the cement grains with EPMA line-analysis of cross-sections of cement grains. The line-analysis reveals the presence of $0.2{\sim}5$ weight % Pb over $5\;{\mu}m$ from cement grain boundaries. In the inter-particle areas, the ratio of Ca, Si, Al and S to Pb is relatively similar even at some distance from the grain border and the Pb (wt. %) ratio is reasonably constant throughout the whole inter-particles area. It is apparent that the enhanced development of C-S-H on addition of calcite can increasingly absorbs lead species within the silica matrix.

This study is interested in identifying the effectiveness of alkali-activated fire protection material compounds including the alkali-activator such as potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash as the fire resistant finishing materials. Also, this paper is concerned with change in compressive strength and pore structure of the alkali-activated fire protection material at high temperatures. The testing methods of fire protection materials in high temperature properties are make use of TG-DSC and mercury intrusion porosimetry measurements. This study results show that compressive strength is rapidly degraded depending on a rise of heating temperature. Porosity showed a tendency to increase irrespective of specimen types. This is due to both the outbreak of collapse of gel comprising the cement and a micro crack by heating. However, alkali-activated fire protection material composed of potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash has the thermal stability of the slight decrease of compressive strength and porosity at high temperature. These thermal stability is caused by the ceramic binding capacity induced by alkali activation reaction by the reason of the thermal analysis result not showing the decomposition of calcium hydrate.

In order to realize carbon neutrality in the international society, research on supplementary cementitious materials(SCMs) has been actively conducted as a way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the cement industry. However, the use of SCMs causes problems of initial hydration delay and strength reduction due to the reduction of tricalcium silicate(C3S) in the cement clinker. Therefore, in this study, the initial hydration and basic characteristics of cement mortar were confirmed by adding a C-S-H based hardening acceleration to blended cement mixed with Portland cement, blast furnace slag, fly ash, and limestone power. As a result of the heat of hydration and compressive strength test, it was confirmed that when hardening acceleration was added, the initial reactivity was high, so the heat of hydration was promoted, and the initial strength was increased. It is considered to be due to C-S-H seeding effect. Therefore, it is judged that the use of C-S-H based hardening acceleration can supplement the problem of initial hydration delay of blended cement in Korea.
