To develop an artificial bone substitute that is gradually degraded and replaced by the regenerated natural bone, the authors designed and produced a composite that is consisted of calcium phosphate and collagen. Human umbilical cord origin pepsin treated type I atelocollagen was used as the structural matrix, by which sintered or non-sintered carbonate apatite was encapsulated to form an inorganic-organic composite. With cross linking atelocollagen by UV ray irradiation, the resistance to both compressive and tensile strength was increased. Collagen degradation by the collagenase induced collagenolysis was also decreased.

This study aims to mix the base concrete by mixing latex to improve the durability performance to reduce the composite deterioration of the base concrete. Latex fiber has high resistance to freezing and thawing, adhesion, and deicing agent (calcium chloride), and it is used to secure long-term durability to reduce cracking and compound deterioration of concrete. In addition, through experiments, we are trying to find ways to improve the strength of concrete by studying the mixing of the appropriate mixing ratio of latex.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of AFm formation on the stiffening process of cement paste. High and low alkali sulfate clinkers were used for the experiments. The flow and stiffening behavior of cement paste was investigated using modified ASTM C403 penetration resistance test and oscillatory shear rheology. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was used for phase identification associated with stiffening of the paste. It was found from the results that low alkali clinker mixture produced very strong premature stiffening whereas high alkali clinker mixture did not cause premature stiffening. This is because of the large amount of alkali sulfate present in the clinker. Addition of calcium and sodium chloride to the high alkali clinker mixture caused faster stiffening and set.
A study of preparing rubber soles and heels was made to improve the quality in their physical properties such as resistance of cut-growth, abrasion resistance and tensile strength. Following results were obtained in the characteristics of rubber compounding: 1. In the reinforcement effect of fillers, it was found that hydrous silcate and carbon black were the best, aluminum and calcium silicate were pretty good, and basic magnesium carbonate was moderate. 2. SBR/BR blend in the ratio of from 85/25 to 100/0 and NBR/BR blend in the ratio of from 60/40 to 20/80 were the most suitable compounding condition.

Pavement concrete subjected to severe environmental condition may be vulnerable to frost attack practically where de-icing chemicals are used. This study focused on the investigation of durability characteristics of pavement concrete incorporation polypropylene fibers and application feasibility of these into the pavements of local roads and highway. A series of labortory tests were performed with main experimental variable such as fiber types, fiber contents. and type of concrete mix. The test of compressive strength was executed as primary tests, before the durability tests such as a scaling resistance were performed. De-icing salt resistance test was progressed by recycling freeze and thaw in the presence of a 4% calcium chloride solution. The deteriorated surfaces were rated by visual inspection and the loss weight were measured at every 5 cycles.
The tribological properties of ceramics are very important in the application to engineering ceramic parts such as seal rings, pump parts, thread guides, and so on. In this study, the effects of graphite addition on the mechanical and tribological properties of alumina/graphite composites were investigated. The composites were prepared by the adding of graphite powder to the mixture of Al2O3, talc and calcium carbonate. Bending strength, water absorption, friction coefficient, the amount of worn out material at a certain time, and maximum surface roughness(Rmax) of the prepared composites were measured. Crystalline phases and microstructure were examined with XRD and SEM. The melt of Al2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2 system was shown over 10 vol% graphite composition. As the amount of the graphite is increased, needle like crystals of mullite were formed and grown. We obtained the good properties of friction coefficients and wear resistance at the powder composition containing 15 vol% of graphite.

In this study, the effect of supplementary materials(GGBS, PFA, SF) on sulfuric acid corrosion resistance was assessed by measuring the compressive strength, corroded depth and weight change at 7, 28, 56, 91, 180 and 250 days of immersion in sulfuric acid solution with the pH of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Then, it was found that an increase in the duration of immersion and a decrease in the pH, as expected, resulted in a more severe corrosion irrespective of binders: increased corroded depth and weight change, and lowered the compressive strength. 60% GGBS mortar specimen was the most resistant to acid corrosion in terms of the corroded depth, weight change and compressive strength, due to the latent hydraulic characteristics and lower portion of calcium hydroxide. The order of resistance to acid was 60% GGBS>20% PFA>10% SF>OPC. In a microscopic examination, it was found that acid corrosion of cement matrix produced gypsum, as a result of decomposition of hydration products, which may loose the structure of cement matrix, thereby leading to a remarkable decrease of concrete properties.
In pseudohypoparathyroidism as reported by Albright in 1942, the parathyroid gland can normally synthesize and secrete parathyroid hormone(PTH). Pseudohypoparathyroidism has a similar biochemical finding with hypoparathyroidisms like hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia due to target tissue resistance to PTH. Administered PTH does not raise the serum levels of calcium and urinary phosphate. PTH activates G-protein in peripheral tissue and adenylate cyclase through a second messenger, cAMP. Pseudohypoparathyroidism produces hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia because of the resistance to PTH in peripheral tissue due to a defect of G-protein, although it releases PTH normally. According to the mechanism of resistance, pseudohypoparathyroidism is classified into types : Ia, Ib, Ic and psedopseudohypoparathyroism. Type Ia is accompanied by congenital growth retardation and abnormal bony development that shows mental retardation, obesity, low height, round face, short metacarpal bone and metatarsal bone, ectopic calcification, etc. We report a case of pseudohypoparathyroidism in a premature who shows hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, elevation of serum PTH and 24 hr urinary basal c-AMP in biochemical tests without Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy at physical examination, accompanied by a spontaneous fracture in the femur.
New wrought magnesium alloys have increasingly been developed in recent years for the automotive industry due to their high potential as structural materials for low density and high strength/weight ratio demands. However, their poor mechanical properties and low corrosion resistance have led to a search for new kinds of magnesium alloys with better strength, ductility, and high corrosion resistance. The main objective of this research is to investigate the corrosion behaviour of new magnesium alloys: Mg-Zn-Ag (ZQ), Mg-Zn-Mn-Si (ZSM) and Mg-Zn-Mn-Si-Ca (ZSMX). These ZQ6X, ZSM6X1, and ZSM651+YCa alloys were prepared using hot extrusion. AC, DC polarization and immersion tests were carried out on the extruded rods. Microstructure was examined using optical and electron microscopy (SEM) and EDS. The addition of silver decreased the corrosion resistance. The additions of silicon and calcium also affected the corrosion behaviour. These results can be explained by the effects of alloying elements on the microstructure of Mg-Zn alloys such as grain size and precipitates caused by the change in precipitation and recrystallisation behaviour.
